The electronic structure and magnetic properties of the Jahn-Teller-distorted perovskite KAgF3 have been investigated using the full-potential linerized aug- mented plane-wave method. It is found that KAgF3 exhibits significant quasi-one- dimensional antiferromagnetism with the ratio of exchange constant jJ?j (perpen- dicular to the z axis) and J (along the z axis) about 0.04, although the sublattice of magnetic ion is three-dimensional. The strong quasi-one-dimensional antiferromag- netism originates from the C-antiferro-distortive orbital ordering of the Ag2+ 4d9 ions. The orbital ordered antiferromagnetic insulating state in KAgF3 is determined by on-site Coulomb repulsion to a large extent.
The unusual electronic and magnetic properties of the systems Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$T$_6$ (T = Ge, Si) with two non-equivalent Ce positions are discussed. The logarithmic growth of resistance for both the systems confirms the presence of the Kondo effect in the two respective temperature ranges. The two-scale behavior is explained by consecutive splitting of Ce ion levels in the crystal field. The effects of the frustration caused by the coexistence of the different positions of cerium are treated, which may also significantly enhance the observed values of specific heat. A model of "molecular magnet…
The discovery of superconductivity in the 122 iron selenide materials above 30 K necessitates an understanding of the underlying magnetic interactions. We present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of magnetic and semiconducting Ce$_{2}$O$_{2}$FeSe$_{2}$ composed of chains of edge-linked iron selenide tetrahedra. The combined neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering study and density functional calculations confirm the ferromagnetic nature of nearest-neighbour Fe -- Se -- Fe interactions in the ZrCuSiAs-related iron oxyselenide Ce$_{2}$O$_{2}$FeSe$_{2}$. Inelastic measur…
We synthesize and study single crystals of a new double-perovskite Sr2YIrO6. Despite two strongly unfavorable conditions for magnetic order, namely, pentavalent Ir5+(5d4) ions which are anticipated to have Jeff=0 singlet ground states in the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) limit, and geometric frustration in a face centered cubic structure formed by the Ir5+ ions, we observe this iridate to undergo a novel magnetic transition at temperatures below 1.3 K. We provide compelling experimental and theoretical evidence that the origin of magnetism is in an unusual interplay between strong non-cubic…
A two-sublattice spin-fermion model of ferrimagnetic spinel, with spin-$1/2$ itinerant electrons at the sublattice $A$ site and spin-$s$ localized electrons at the sublattice $B$ site is considered. The exchange between itinerant and localized electrons is antiferromanetic. As a result the external magnetic field, applied along the magnetization of the localized electrons, compensates the Zeeman splitting due to the spin-fermion exchange and magnon-fermion interaction induces spin anti-parallel p-wave superconductivity which coexists with magnetism. We have obtained five characteristic values …
Single-site dynamical mean field theory is used to determine the magnetic and orbital-ordering phase diagram for a model of electrons moving on a lattice with three orbital states per site and with the fully rotationally invariant Slater-Kanamori on-site interactions. The model captures important aspects of the physics of transition metal oxides with partially filled $t_{2g}$ shells, and of electron-doped C$_{60}$. We introduce an unbiased, computationally simple and inexpensive method for estimating the presence of two sublattice order, determine the regimes in which spatially uniform and two…
We report on structural, magnetic, electrical, and thermodynamic properties of Gd-doped LaMnO3 single crystals for Gd doping levels 0 <= x <= 1. At room temperature, for all doping levels the orthorhombic O' phase is indicative for a strong Jahn-Teller distortion. All compositions are insulating. The magnetism of La$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$MnO$_3$ is dominated by the relatively strong Mn-Mn exchange. The weakening of the antiferromagnetic interactions due to the significant decrease f the Mn-O-Mn bond angles leads to the continuous suppression of the magnetic phase-transition temperatures into the antife…
We describe here a quantum simulator of extended bipartite Hubbard model with broken sublattice symmetry. The simulator consists of a structured lateral gate confining two dimensional electrons in a quantum well into artificial minima arranged in a hexagonal lattice. The sublattice symmetry breaking is generated by forming an artificial triangular graphene quantum dot (ATGQD) with zigzag edges. The resulting extended Hubbard model generates tunable ratio of tunneling strength to electron-electron interactions and of sublattice symmetry with control over shape. The validity of the simulator is …
We synthesize and study single crystals of the layered honeycomb lattice Mott insulators Na2RuO3 and Li2RuO3 with magnetic Ru4+(4d4) ions. The newly found Na2RuO3 features a nearly ideal honeycomb lattice and orders antiferromagnetically at 30 K. Single-crystals of Li2RuO3 adopt a honeycomb lattice with either C2/m or more distorted P21/m below 300 K, depending on detailed synthesis conditions. We find that Li2RuO3 in both structures hosts a well-defined magnetic state, in contrast to the singlet ground state found in polycrystalline Li2RuO3. A phase diagram generated based on our results unco…
The fine control of magnetism and electronic structure is crucial since the interplay between magnetism and band topology can lead to various novel magnetic topological states including axion insulators, magnetic Weyl semimetals and Chern insulators etc. Through crystal growth, transport, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction measurements, we show that with Sb-doping, the newly-discovered intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi4Te7 evolves from antiferro-magnetic to ferromagnetic and then ferrimagnetic. We attribute this to the formation of Mn(Bi,Sb) antisites upon doping, which re…
Cubic double perovskites that host heavy ions with total angular momentum J = 2 can exhibit a singular magnetic state epitomized by a lone octupole and bulk ferro-type magnetism. It exists in the Chen - Balents Hamiltonian with a quadrupole interaction and competing exchange forces between the ions. Our symmetry inspired analysis mirrors the Dzyaloshinskii - Man'ko theory of latent antiferromagnetic ordering, and a 3-k collinear structure. Experimental tests of the singular state include neutron and x-ray Bragg diffraction.
We have deployed density functional theory, Wannier function analysis and mean-field calculations to investigate the double-double perovskite compound CaMnCrSbO_{6}. The crystallographically non-equivalent Mn atoms in the unit cell have tetrahedral and planar oxygen coordinations (labelled as Mn(1) and Mn(2)), while the Cr atom is in the centre of distorted oxygen octahedron. While the bulk magnetization and neutron diffraction suggest a simpler ferrimagnetic order (T_C=49 K) between Mn2+ and Cr3+ spins, the exchange interactions are more complex than that expected from a two sublattice magnet…
The magnetic structures adopted by the Fe and Sm sublattices in SmFeAsO have been investigated using element specific x-ray resonant and non-resonant magnetic scattering techniques. Between 110 and 5 K, the Sm and Fe moments are aligned along the c and a directions, respectively according to the same magnetic representation $Γ_{5}$ and the same propagation vector (1, 0, 0.5). Below 5 K, magnetic order of both sublattices change to a different magnetic structure and the Sm moments reorder in a magnetic unit cell equal to the chemical unit cell. Modeling of the temperature dependence for the Sm …
SrEr2O4 is a geometrically frustrated magnet which demonstrates rather unusual properties at low temperatures including a coexistence of long- and short-range magnetic order, characterized by two different propagation vectors. In the present work, the effects of crystal fields (CF) in this compound containing four magnetically inequivalent erbium sublattices are investigated experimentally and theoretically. We combine the measurements of the CF levels of the Er3+ ions made on a powder sample of SrEr2O4 using neutron spectroscopy with site-selective optical and electron paramagnetic resonance …
The topological phases of graphene with spin-orbit coupling, an exchange field, and a staggered-sublattice potential determine the properties of the edge states of the zigzag nanoribbon. In the presence of the Hubbard interaction, the spontaneous magnetization at the zigzag terminations induces sizable magnetic moments at the lattice sites in the bulk region. Thus, the exchange field and staggered-sublattice potential in the bulk region are effectively changed, which in turn change the topological phase. Within a certain parameter regime, quasi-stable excited states of the zigzag nanoribbon ex…
We investigate the occurrence of Hund's rule magnetism in C60(n+-) molecular ions, by computing the ground-state spin for all charge states n from -3 to +5. The two competing interactions, electron-vibration (e-v, including Jahn Teller, favoring low spin) and electron-electron (e-e, including Hund-rule exchange, favoring high spin), are accounted for based on previously computed ab-initio coupling parameters. Treating the ion coordinates as classical, we first calculate and classify the static Jahn-Teller distorted states for all n, inclusive of both e-v and e-e effects. We then correct the ad…
We report a new peculiar effect of the interaction between a sublattice of frustrated quantum spin-1/2 chains and a sublattice of pseudospin-1/2 centers (quantum electric dipoles) uniquely co-existing in the complex oxide Li2ZrCuO4. 7Li nuclear magnetic-, Cu2+ electron spin resonance and a complex dielectric constant data reveal that the sublattice of Li+-derived electric dipoles orders glass like at Tg ~ 70 K yielding a spin site nonequivalency in the CuO2 chains. We suggest that such a remarkable interplay between electrical and spin degrees of freedom might strongly influence the properties…
Fifteen parameters characterizing the crystal field of rare-earth ions in the RMO$_3$ perovskites (R = Pr, Nd, M = Ga, Co) are calculated by expanding the local Hamiltonian expressed in the basis of Wannier functions into a series of spherical tensor operators. The method contains a single adjustable parameter that characterizes the hybridization of R($4f$) states with the states of oxygen ligands. Subsequently the energy levels and magnetic moments of trivalent R ion are determined by diagonalization of an effective Hamiltonian which, besides the crystal field, contains the $4f$ electron-elec…

In the metallic pyrochlore Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$, the conducting Molybdenum sublattice adopts canted, yet nearly collinear ferromagnetic order with nonzero scalar spin chirality. The chemical potential may be controlled by replacing Nd$^{3+}$ with Ca$^{2+}$, while introducing only minimal additional disorder to the conducting states. Here, we demonstrate the stability of the canted ferromagnetic state, including the tilting angle of Molybdenum spins, in (Nd$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ (NCMO) with $x\le 0.15$ using magnetic susceptibility measurements. Mo-Mo and Mo-Nd magnetic couplings both ch…
We report a neutron powder diffraction study of $R$Mn$_7$O$_{12}$ quadruple perovskite manganites with $R$ = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, and Eu. We show that in all measured compounds concomitant magnetic ordering of the $A$ and $B$ manganese sublattices occurs on cooling below the N$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$el temperature. The respective magnetic structures are collinear, with one uncompensated Mn$^{3+}$ moment per formula unit as observed in bulk magnetisation measurements. We show that both LaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ and NdMn$_7$O$_{12}$ undergo a second magnetic phase transition at low temperature, which introduces a…
We study magnetism on the fcc lattice with tetragonal distortions, with general exotic directional magnetic interactions allowed by symmetry. We consider two models, corresponding to a uniform tetragonal distortion, or a two-sublattice model with a tetragonal screw axis. We establish their low temperature phase diagrams in the semi-classical limit using classical optimization and consideration of fluctuations both analytically and by Monte Carlo simulation. Both order by disorder and exchange anisotropy mechanisms favor a $\langle 110\rangle$ easy axis for magnetization. We also show that spin…
The doping series Eu1-xCaxCoO3-d provides a rather peculiar way to study the spin-state transition in cobalt-based complex oxides since partial substitution of Eu3+ ions by Ca2+ ions does not increase the mean valence state of cobalt but is accompanied by appearance of oxygen vacancies in the ratio d \sim x/2. In the parent compound EuCoO3, the low spin (LS)-high spin (HS) transition takes place at temperatures so high that the chemical decomposition prevents its direct observation. The substitution of Eu3+ for Ca2+ in this system shifts the LS-HS transition to lower temperatures. The energy g…
The phase diagram of graphene decorated with magnetic adatoms distributed either on a single sublattice, or evenly over the two sublattices, is computed for adatom concentrations as low as $\sim1\%$. Within the framework of the $s$-$d$ interaction, we take into account disorder effects due to the random positioning of the adatoms and/or to the thermal fluctuations in the direction of magnetic moments. Despite the presence of disorder, the magnetic phases are shown to be stable down to the lowest concentration accessed here. This result agrees with several experimental observations where adatom…
$2p$-based magnetic moments and magnetic coupling are studied with density functional based methods for substitutional N in the alkaline earth monoxide series MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO. The hole is rather strongly localized near the N$^{2-}$ ion, being somewhat more so when strong on-site interactions are included in the calculations. Strong magnetic coupling is obtained in the itinerant electron limit but decreases strongly in the localized limit in which the Coulomb repulsion within the N $2p$ shell (U) is much greater than the N $2p$ impurity bandwidth (W). We find that this limit is appropriate f…
We present the magnetic phase diagram of TbMn1-xFexO3 substitutional solid solution in the whole concentration range 0 <= x <= 1 as determined from magnetization and specific heat measurements. We have found that the dominant magnetic ion in the concentration range 0 <= x < 0.3 is manganese, while iron ions do not create independent magnetic structure, but strongly affect magnetic properties of the parent compound by reducing transition to magnetically ordered state and transition into a cycloidal phase. The magnetism in the concentration range 0.3 < x <= 1 is driven by the Fe sublattice. The …
We report on the evolution of the thermal metal-insulator transition in polycrystalline samples of Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ upon hole-doping via substitution of Ca$^{2+}$ for Nd$^{3+}$. Ca substitution mediates a filling-controlled Mott-like transition with minimal resolvable structural changes and without altering site symmetry. Local structure confirms that Ca substitution does not result in local chemical phase separation, and absorption spectroscopy establishes that Ir cations maintain a spin-orbit entangled electronic configuration. The metal-insulator transition coincides with antiferromagnetic…

We have studied Ir spin and orbital magnetic moments in the double perovskites La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CoIrO$_6$ by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In La$_2$CoIrO$_6$, Ir$^{4+}$ couples antiferromagnetically to the weak ferromagnetic moment of the canted Co$^{2+}$ sublattice and shows an unusually large negative total magnetic moment (-0.38\,$μ_{\text B}$/f.u.) combined with strong spin-orbit interaction. In contrast, in Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$, Ir$^{5+}$ has a paramagnetic moment with almost no orbital contribution. A simple kinetic-energy-driven mechanism including spin-orbit coupling explains why Ir is …
We have synthesized two new interstitial compounds (RPd3)8Mn (R = La and Ce). The Mn ions present in "dilute" concentration of just 3 molar percent form a sublattice with an unusually large Mn-Mn near neighbor distance of ~ 85 nm. While the existence of (RPd3)8M (where M is a p-block element) is already documented in the literature, the present work reports for the first time the formation of this phase with M being a 3d element. In (LaPd3)8Mn, the Mn sub-lattice orders antiferromagnetically as inferred from the peaks in low-field magnetization at 48 K and 23 K. The latter peak progressively s…
Materials with a 5d4 electronic configuration are generally considered to have a nonmagnetic ground state (J=0). Interestingly, Sr2YIrO6 (Ir5+ having 5d4 electronic configuration) was recently reported to exhibit long-range magnetic order at low temperature and the distorted IrO6 octahedra were discussed to cause the magnetism in this material. Hence, a comparison of structurally distorted Sr2YIrO6 with cubic Ba2YIrO6 may shed light on the source of magnetism in such Ir5+ materials with 5d4 configuration. Besides, Ir5+ materials having 5d4 are also interesting in the context of recently predic…
The local magnetism induced by vacancies in the presence of the spin-orbital interaction is investigated based on the half-filled Kane-Mele-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. Using the self-consistent mean-field theory, we find that the spin-orbital coupling will enhance the localization of the spin moments near a single vacancy. We further study the magnetic structures along the zigzag edges formed by a chain of vacancies. We find that the spin-orbital coupling tends to suppress the counter-polarized ferrimagnetic order on the upper and lower edges, because of the open of the spin-orbita…
We have calculated the electronic structure of V2O3 associated with the V3+ ions taking into account strong on-site electron correlations and the spin-orbit coupling. Closely lying 9 states of the subterm 3T1g are a physical reason for exotic phenomena of V2O3. Electronic structure and magnetism of V3+ ions in the octahedral surroundings are strongly susceptible to lattice distortions and magnetic interactions. Our approach accounts both for the insulating ground state, magnetism, including its orbital contribution, as well as thermodynamical properties.
Using complementary polarized and unpolarized single-crystal neutron diffraction, we have investigated the temperature-dependent magnetic structures of Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. Upon 50 \% dilution of the Eu sites with isovalent Ca$^{2+}$, the Eu sublattice is found to be still long-range ordered below $\mathit{T_{Eu}}$ = 10 K, in the A-typed antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure. The moment size of Eu$^{2+}$ spins is estimated to be as large as 6.74(4) $μ_{B}$ at 2.5 K. The Fe sublattice undergoes a spin-density-wave transition at $\mathit{T_{SDW}}$ = 192(2) K and displays an in-plane…
Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$ has two inter-penetrating square Cu sublattices, one with square root 2 times the in-plane spacing of the other. Isotropic magnetic interactions between the two sublattices are completely frustrated. Quantum fluctuations resolve the intrinsic degeneracy in the ordering direction of the more weakly coupled sublattice in favor of collinear ordering. We present neutron scattering and magnetization studies of the magnetic structure when the Cu ions are substituted with Co. The Co spins create new magnetic interactions between the two sublattices. The ordering behavior of bo…
The magnetic and electronic properties of Ba$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ were investigated by the ab-initio and model calculations. It is shown that nonmagnetic ground state of the one-third Ru$^{4+}$ ions is not due to the correlation effects. It is rather caused by the charge disproportionation between crystallographically different Ru and the molecular orbital formation in the Ru's trimer.
Epitaxial thin films of undoped LaCoO$_{3}$\@, of electron-doped La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$\@, and of hole-doped La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$\@ exhibit ferromagnetic order with a transition temperature $T_{\rm{C}}$ $\approx$ 85 K, 22 K, and 240 K, respectively. The spin-state structure for these compounds was studied by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co $L_{2,3}$ and O $K$ edges. It turns out that a higher spin state of the Co$^{3+}$ ions is responsible for the magnetism in LaCoO$_{3}$\@ while for La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ the Co$^{3+}$ ions are in a low-spin state and t…
In the framework of the LSDA+U method electronic structure and magnetic properties of the intermetallic compound Gd2Fe17 for both rhombohedral and hexagonal phases have been calculated. On top of that, ab initio exchange interaction parameters within the Fe sublattice for all present nearest and some next nearest Fe ions have been obtained. It was found that for the first coordination sphere direct exchange interaction is ferromagnetic. For the second coordination sphere indirect exchange interaction is observed to be weaker and of antiferromagnetic type. Employing the theoretical values of ex…
Ruthenium trichloride is the subject of many recent experimental and theoretical studies. Johnson et al. infer a candidate for the magnetic structure (Cc2/m) from results gathered in an extensive set of experiments on an untwined sample of alpha-RuCl3 [R. D. Johnson et al., Phys. Rev. B 92, 235119 (2015)]. The proposed zigzag antiferromagnetic ground state of Ru ions does not respond to bulk magnetic probes. Properties of the candidate magnetic structure not previously explored include polar magnetism that supports Ru Dirac multipoles, e.g., a ruthenium anapole. In a general case, Dirac dipole…
Exploring Low-Dimensional Magnetism in Cobalt Vanadates, ${A}$CoV$_{2}$O$_{7}$~(${A}$~=~Ca, Sr) : Crystal Growth and Magnetic Properties of Effective Spin-1/2 Zigzag Chains
Recently synthesised Ba4NbMn3O12 belong to cluster magnets - systems with tightly bound groups of magnetism ions, in this case Mn3 trimers. Often such magnetic clusters can be described by molecular orbitals (MO), however strong electron correlations may invalidate this description. To understand the electronic and magnetic state of Ba4NbMn3O12 we carried out ab initio calculations and show that this system is better described not in MO picture, but as a system with electrons localized on the Mn ions, with strong intra-cluster and weaker inter-cluster exchange. The calculated spin of the Mn3 t…
The possibilities to induce magnetism in the non-magnetic bulk alpha-FeSi2 by means of lattice distortions or intercalation with metal or non-metal ions of light elements is investigated theoretically by combined ab initio and model methods. We find that the distortions indeed can induce the formation of magnetic moment on iron atoms in certain local environments; however, the required strength of the distortions often is too large to be achieved in experiments. For this reason we suggest using "chemical pressure" that is, intercalating the alpha-FeSi2 films by light elements. We find that som…
Co$_{4}$B$_{6}$O$_{13}$ contains undistorted tetrahedral clusters of magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ions. The high-field magnetization of this magnet exhibits a periodic undulation indicating quantization of the total spin number per cluster. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat reveal that the ground state is composed of several different singlet states, reflecting the high symmetry of the spin tetrahedron. An exact diagonalization calculation taking account of single-ion type anisotropies and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions reproduces the expretimental results very well.
The magnetism of Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ from $x$ = 0.09 to $x$ = 0.91 with andalusite structure was examined. The magnetic properties of Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ at low temperatures were found to be weak ferromagnetic-like state for $x$ $<$ 0.3 and spin-glass state for $x$ $>$ 0.3. The small spontaneous magnetization that appears in the weak ferromagnetic-like phase would be due to the presence of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction or to the difference in the magnitude of the magnetic moment of Fe$^{3+}$ in the octahedral and trigonal bipyramidal sites. The appearance of the spin-glass phase ind…
The spinel MnV_2O_4 is a two-sublattice ferrimagnet, with site A occupied by the Mn^{2+} ion and site B by the V^{3+} ion. The magnon of the system, the transversal fluctuation of the total magnetization, is a complicated mixture of the sublattice A and B transversal magnetic fluctuations. As a result, the magnons' fluctuations suppress in a different way the manganese and vanadium magnetic orders and one obtains two phases. At low temperature (0,T^*) the magnetic orders of the Mn and V ions contribute to the magnetization of the system, while at the high temperature (T^*,T_N), the vanadium ma…
The effects of hydrostatic pressure on the static magnetism in Eu(Fe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ are investigated by complementary electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. A specific pressure-temperature phase diagram of Eu(Fe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is established. The structural phase transition, as well as the spin-density-wave order of Fe sublattice, is suppressed gradually with increasing pressure and disappears completely above 2.0 GPa. In contrast, the magnetic order of Eu sublattice persists over the w…
Possible ferromagnetism induced in otherwise non-magnetic materials has been motivating intense research in complex oxide heterostructures. Here we show that a confined magnetism is realized at the interface between SrTiO3 and two insulating polar oxides, BiMnO3 and LaAlO3. By using polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we find that in both cases the magnetic order is stabilized by a negative exchange interaction between the electrons transferred to the interface and local magnetic moments. These local magnetic moments are associated to Ti3+ ions at the interface itself for LaA…
Multiferroics with coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism have been pursued for decades. However, their magnetoelectric performances remain limited due to the common trade-off between ferroelectricity and magnetism. Here, a family of nitride perovskites is proposed as multiferroics with prominent physical properties and nontrivial mechanisms. Taking GdWN$_3$ as a prototype, our first-principles calculations found that its perovskite phases own large polarizations (e.g. $111.3$ $μ$C/cm$^2$ for the $R3c$ phase) and a magnetic moment $7$ $μ_{\rm B}$/Gd$^{3+}$. More interestingly, its fer…

A macroscopic single crystal of $γ_{\rm II}$-Li\(_2\)FeSiO\(_4\) has been grown by means of the high-pressure optical floating-zone technique. Static magnetic susceptibility $χ$ implies that the tetrahedrally-coordinated Fe$^{2+}$ ions are in the high-spin, $S=2$, state. While a sharp decrease in $χ$ implies long-range antiferromagnetic order below \tn\ = 17.0(5)~K, the presence of a broad maximum at $T_{\rm m} = 28$~K suggests quasi-low-dimensional magnetism. Applying magnetic fields along the easy magnetic $a$-axis yields additional contributions to the susceptibility $\partial M/\partial B$…
Phase transitions, compensation phenomenon and magnetization of a ferro-ferrimagnetic ternary alloy AB$_ρ$C$_{1-ρ}$ composed of three different kinds of magnetic ions A, B and C with the spin magnitude 1/2, 1 and 3/2 are examined within the framework of a mixed-spin Ising model on a honeycomb lattice with a selective annealed site disorder on one of its two sublattices. It is supposed that the first sublattice of a bipartite honeycomb lattice is formed by the spin-1/2 magnetic ions, while the sites of the second sublattice are randomly occupied either by the spin-1 magnetic ions with a probabi…
The magnetic properties of the two-channel periodic Anderson model for uranium ions, comprised of a quadrupolar and a magnetic doublet are investigated through the crossover from the mixed-valent to the stable moment regime using dynamical mean field theory. In the mixed-valent regime ferromagnetism is found for low carrier concentration on a hyper-cubic lattice. The Kondo regime is governed by band magnetism with small effective moments and an ordering vector $\q$ close to the perfect nesting vector. In the stable moment regime nearest neighbour anti-ferromagnetism dominates for less than hal…
We propose the realization of linear crystals of cold ions which contain different atomic species for investigating quantum phase transitions and frustration effects in spin system beyond the commonly discussed case of $s=1/2$. Mutual spin-spin interactions between ions can be tailored via the Zeeman effect by applying oscillating magnetic fields with strong gradients. Further, collective vibrational modes in the mixed ion crystal can be used to enhance and to vary the strength of spin-spin interactions and even to switch those forces from a ferro- to an antiferromagnetic character. We conside…
We report on an investigation of optical properties of multiferroic CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ at terahertz frequencies in magnetic fields up to 30 T. Below the ferrimagnetic transition (94 K), the terahertz response of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is dominated by a magnon mode, which shows a steep magnetic-field dependence. We ascribe this mode to an exchange resonance between two magnetic sublattices with different $g$-factors. In the framework of a simple two-sublattice model (the sublattices are formed by Co$^{2+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions), we find the inter-sublattice coupling constant, $λ= - (18 \pm 1)$ K, and t…
We report the magnetic properties of compounds in the KBaRE(BO3)2 family (RE= Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb), materials with a planar triangular lattice composed of rare earth ions. The samples were analyzed by x-ray diffraction and crystallize in the space group R-3m. Physical property measurements indicate the compounds display predominantly antiferromagnetic interactions between spins without any signs of magnetic ordering above 1.8 K. The ideal 2D rare earth triangular layers in this structure type make it a potential model system for investigating magnetic frustration in rare-earth-b…
