Fifteen parameters characterizing the crystal field of rare-earth ions in the RMO$_3$ perovskites (R = Pr, Nd, M = Ga, Co) are calculated by expanding the local Hamiltonian expressed in the basis of Wannier functions into a series of spherical tensor operators. The method contains a single adjustable parameter that characterizes the hybridization of R($4f$) states with the states of oxygen ligands. Subsequently the energy levels and magnetic moments of trivalent R ion are determined by diagonalization of an effective Hamiltonian which, besides the crystal field, contains the $4f$ electron-electron repulsion, spin-orbit coupling and interaction with magnetic field. In the Ga compounds the energy levels of the ground multiplet agree within few meV with those determined experimentally by other authors. For all four compounds in question the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility is measured on polycrystalline samples and compared with the results of calculation. For NdGaO$_3$ theory is also compared with the magnetic measurements on a single crystal presented by Luis {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. B {\bf 58}, 798 (1998). A good agreement between the experiment and theory is found.
By combining dielectric, specific heat, and magnetization measurements and high-resolution neutron powder diffraction, we have investigated the thermodynamic and magnetic/structural properties of the metastable orthorhombic perovskite ErMnO_3 prepared by high-pressure synthesis. The system becomes antiferromagnetically correlated below 42 K and undergoes a lock-in transition at 28 K with propagation wave vector (0,k_b,0), which remains incommensurate at low temperature. The intercorrelation between the magnetic structure and electric properties and the role of the rare earth moment are discuss…
Using $t_{2g}$ Wannier-functions, a low-energy Hamiltonian is derived for orthorhombic $3d^{1}$ transition-metal oxides. Electronic correlations are treated with a new implementation of dynamical mean-field theory for non-cubic systems. Good agreement with photoemission data is obtained. The interplay of correlation effects and cation covalency (GdFeO$_{3}$-type distortions) is found to suppress orbital fluctuations in LaTiO$_{3},$ and even more in YTiO$_{3}$, and to favor the transition to the insulating state.
We show that the symmetry of the spin zigzag chain E phase of the orthorhombic perovskite manganites and nickelates allows for the existence of a finite ferroelectric polarization. The proposed microscopic mechanism is independent of spin-orbit coupling. We predict that the polarization induced by the E-type magnetic order can potentially be enhanced by up to two orders of magnitude with respect to that in the spiral magnetic phases of TbMnO3 and similar multiferroic compounds.
The orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3 is a semimetal, an intriguing exception in iridates where the strong spin-orbit interaction coupled with electron correlations tends to impose a novel insulating state. We report results of our investigation of bulk single-crystal Sr0.94Ir0.78O2.68 or Ir-deficient, orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3. It retains the same crystal structure as stoichiometric SrIrO3 but exhibits a sharp, simultaneous antiferromagnetic (AFM) and metal-insulator (MI) transition at 185 K. Above it, the basal-plane resistivity features an extended regime of almost linear-temperature depe…
Cubic double perovskites that host heavy ions with total angular momentum J = 2 can exhibit a singular magnetic state epitomized by a lone octupole and bulk ferro-type magnetism. It exists in the Chen - Balents Hamiltonian with a quadrupole interaction and competing exchange forces between the ions. Our symmetry inspired analysis mirrors the Dzyaloshinskii - Man'ko theory of latent antiferromagnetic ordering, and a 3-k collinear structure. Experimental tests of the singular state include neutron and x-ray Bragg diffraction.
Magnetism-induced negative thermal expansion (NTE) observed in inverse perovskite antiferromagnets Mn3AN (A=Zn, Ga, etc.) is theoretically studied by a classical spin model with competing bond-length-dependent exchange interactions. We numerically reproduce the crystal-volume expansion upon cooling triggered by a non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order and show that the expansion occurs so as to maximize an energy gain of the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. This mechanism is not specific to inverse perovskite magnets and might also be expected in magnets with other crystal struct…
We combine several numerical and semi-analytical methods to study the $5d$ double perovskites Sr2YIRO6 and Ba2YIRO6 which were recently proposed to exhibit excitonic magnetism. Starting from the density functional theory and constrained random phase approximation we construct effective multi-band Hubbard models. These are analyzed by means of static and dynamical mean-field theories and strong coupling expansion. We find both materials to be insulators, but, contrary to the experimental claims, with a large spin gap of several hundreds meV preventing formation of an ordered state at low temper…
The ability to tune exchange (magnetic) interactions between 3d transition metals in perovskite structures has proven to be a powerful route to discovery of novel properties. Here we demonstrate that the introduction of 3d-5d exchange pathways in double perovskites enables additional tunability, a result of the large spatial extent of 5d wave functions. Using x-ray probes of magnetism and structure at high pressure, we show that compression of Sr2FeOsO6 drives an unexpected continuous change in the sign of Fe-Os exchange interactions and a transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic ord…
We explore the relative strengths of spin orbit coupling and crystal field splitting in the Ir5+ compounds Ba2-xSrxYIrO6. In the case of strong spin orbit coupling and regular Ir5+ octahedra, one expects a nonmagnetic J = 0 state; in the case of distorted octahedra where crystal field effects dominate, the t2g manifold splits into a magnetic ground state. We report the results of continuously transitioning from the cubic Ba2YIrO6 double perovskite with ideal octahedra to the monoclinic Sr2YIrO6 double perovskite with distorted octahedra. We see no emergence of an enhanced Ir5+ magnetic moment …
The electronic structure and magnetism of Sr$_2$CeIrO$_6$, an Ir-based double perovskite system has been investigated using first-principles calculations. We found that a strong spin-orbit coupling dictate the electronic and magnetic properties of this system. A small value of $U$ along with SOC could open up a gap at the Fermi level, offering the possibility of novel J$_{eff}$ = 1/2 Mott quantum state. Our calculations reveal that the magnetic ground state is antiferromagnetic in agreement with the magnetization data and provide the value of spin and orbital moment for this system which is in…
We synthesize and study single crystals of a new double-perovskite Sr2YIrO6. Despite two strongly unfavorable conditions for magnetic order, namely, pentavalent Ir5+(5d4) ions which are anticipated to have Jeff=0 singlet ground states in the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) limit, and geometric frustration in a face centered cubic structure formed by the Ir5+ ions, we observe this iridate to undergo a novel magnetic transition at temperatures below 1.3 K. We provide compelling experimental and theoretical evidence that the origin of magnetism is in an unusual interplay between strong non-cubic…
The floating-zone method with different growth ambiances has been used to selectively obtain hexagonal or orthorhombic DyMnO$_{3}$ single crystals. The crystals were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction of ground specimen and a structure refinement as well as electron diffraction. We report magnetic susceptibility, magnetisation, and specific heat studies of this multiferroic compound in both the hexagonal and the orthorhombic structure. The hexagonal DyMnO$_{3}$ shows magnetic ordering of Mn$^{3+}$ (S =2) spins on a triangular Mn lattice at $T^{\mathrm {Mn}}_{N}$ = 57 K characterized by …
We study magnetism on the fcc lattice with tetragonal distortions, with general exotic directional magnetic interactions allowed by symmetry. We consider two models, corresponding to a uniform tetragonal distortion, or a two-sublattice model with a tetragonal screw axis. We establish their low temperature phase diagrams in the semi-classical limit using classical optimization and consideration of fluctuations both analytically and by Monte Carlo simulation. Both order by disorder and exchange anisotropy mechanisms favor a $\langle 110\rangle$ easy axis for magnetization. We also show that spin…
Experiments demonstrating the controlled growth of oxide heterostructures have raised the prospect of realizing topologically nontrivial states of correlated electrons in low dimensions. Here, we study heterostructures consisting of {111}-bilayers of double perovskites separated by inert band insulators. In bulk, these double perovskites have well-defined local moments interacting with itinerant electrons leading to high temperature ferromagnetism. Incorporating spin-orbit coupling in the two-dimensional honeycomb geometry of a {111}-bilayer, we find a rich phase diagram with tunable ferromagn…
We use the LDA+U method to study the possibility of exciton condensation in perovskites of transition metals with $d^6$ electronic configuration such as LaCoO$_3$. For realistic interaction parameters we find several distinct solutions exhibiting spin-triplet exciton condensate, which gives rise to a local spin density distribution while the ordered moments are vanishingly small. Rhombohedral distortion from the ideal cubic structure suppresses the ordered state, contrary to the spin-orbit coupling which enhances the excitonic condensation energy. We explain the trends observed in the numerica…
We have studied Ir spin and orbital magnetic moments in the double perovskites La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CoIrO$_6$ by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In La$_2$CoIrO$_6$, Ir$^{4+}$ couples antiferromagnetically to the weak ferromagnetic moment of the canted Co$^{2+}$ sublattice and shows an unusually large negative total magnetic moment (-0.38\,$μ_{\text B}$/f.u.) combined with strong spin-orbit interaction. In contrast, in Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$, Ir$^{5+}$ has a paramagnetic moment with almost no orbital contribution. A simple kinetic-energy-driven mechanism including spin-orbit coupling explains why Ir is …
The evolution of the magnetic ordering temperature of the 4d3 perovskites RTcO3 (R=Ca,Sr,Ba) and its relation with its electronic and structural properties has been studied by means of hybrid density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulations. When compared to the most widely studied 3d perovskites the large spatial extent of the 4d shells and their relatively strong hybridization with oxygen weaken the tendency to form Jahn-Teller like orbital ordering. This strengthens the superexchange interaction. The resulting insulating G-type antiferromagnetic ground state is characterized by large s…
The magnetic structure of Ca$_2$MnReO$_6$ double perovskite is investigated by neutron powder diffraction and bulk magnetization, showing dominant non-collinear Mn magnetic moments [$4.35(7)$ $μ_B$] that are orthogonally aligned with the small Re moments [$0.22(4)$ $μ_B$]. $Ab$-initio electronic structure calculations show that the strong spin-orbit coupling for Re $5d$ electrons combined with a relatively modest on-site Coulomb repulsion ($U_{eff}^{Re} \gtrsim 0.6$ eV) is sufficient to render this material insulating. This is a rare example of spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator outside the re…
The quest for Kitaev spin liquids in particular three dimensional solids is long sought goal in condensed matter physics, as these states may give rise to exotic new types of quasi-particle excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers namely Majorana Fermionic excitations. Here we report the experimental signature of this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid via Raman measurements. Sm2ZnIrO6 is a strongly spin orbit coupled Mott insulator, where Jeff = 1/2 controls the physics, which provide striking evidence for this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid. As the temp…
High purity polycrystalline Na0.5La0.5RuO3 was synthesized by a solid state method, and its properties were studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and resistivity measurements. We find it to be a tetragonal perovskite, in contrast to an earlier report, with random La/Na mixing. With a Curie-Weiss temperature of -231 K and effective moment of 2.74 uB/mol-Ru, there is no magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K. A broad hump at 1.4 K in the heat capacity, however, indicates the presence of a glassy magnetic transition, which we attribute to the influence of the random distribution of Na and La…
We report electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy results on the double perovskite Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$. On general grounds, this material is expected to be nonmagnetic due to the strong coupling of the spin and orbital momenta of Ir$^{5+}$ (5$d^4$) ions. However, controversial experimental reports on either strong antiferromagnetism with static order at low temperatures or just a weakly paramagnetic behavior have triggered a discussion on the breakdown of the generally accepted scenario of the strongly spin-orbit coupled ground states in the 5$d^4$ iridates and the emergence of a novel exotic ma…
Spin reorientation and magnetisation reversal are two important features of the rare-earth orthorhombic provskites ($RM$O$_{3}$'s) that have attracted a lot of attention, though their exact microscopic origin has eluded researchers. Here, using density functional theory and classical atomistic spin dynamics we build a general Heisenberg magnetic model that allows to explore the whole phase diagram of the chromite and ferrite compounds and to scrutinize the microscopic mechanism responsible for spin reorientations and magnetisation reversals. We show that the occurrence of a magnetization rever…
We find evidence for long-range and short-range ($ζ$ $=$ 70 Å~at 4 K) incommensurate magnetic order on the quasi-face-centered-cubic (FCC) lattices of the monoclinic double perovskites La$_2$NaRuO$_6$ and La$_2$NaOsO$_6$ respectively. Incommensurate magnetic order on the FCC lattice has not been predicted by mean field theory, but may arise via a delicate balance of inequivalent nearest neighbour and next nearest neighbour exchange interactions. In the Ru system with long-range order, inelastic neutron scattering also reveals a spin gap $Δ$ $\sim$ 2.75 meV. Magnetic anisotropy is generally min…
We use ab initio electronic structure calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA+U) to density functional theory (DFT) to determine the microscopic exchange interactions in the series of orthorhombic rare-earth manganites, o-$R$MnO$_3$. Our motivation is to construct a model Hamiltonian (excluding effects due to spin-orbit coupling), which can provide an accurate description of the magnetism in these materials. First, we consider TbMnO$_3$, which exhibits a spiral magnetic order at low temperatures. We map the exchange couplings in this compound onto a Heisenberg Hamiltoni…
Using results of the band structure calculations in the local-spin-density approximation we demonstrate how the crystal distortions affect the magnetic structure of orthorhombically distorted perovskites leading to a non-collinear spin arrangement. Our results suggest that the non-collinearity of the spin magnetic moments, being generally small in La$M$O$_3$ series with $M$=Cr-Fe, is large in SrRuO$_3$.
We have investigated spin and orbital magnetic moments of the Re 5d ion in the double perovskites A2FeReO6 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Re L(2,3) edges. In these ferrimagnetic compounds an unusually large negative spin and positive orbital magnetic moment at the Re atoms was detected. The presence of a finite spin magnetic moment in a 'non-magnetic' double perovskite as observed in the double perovskite Sr2ScReO6 proves that Re has also a small, but finite intrinsic magnetic moment. We further show for the examples of Ba and Ca that the usually neglected …
The coexistence of the strongly correlated 3$d$ transition metal (TM) atom and the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of 5$d$ TM atom is potential to host exotic physical phenomena. In the present work, we have studied the magnetism resulting from such a coexistence in La$_2$CoIrO$_6$ (LCIO), a representative of bulk 3$d$-5$d$ double perovskites. In order to gain further insight into the effect of Co-$d$ states on the Ir-$d$ states, comparisons are carried out with the isostructural La$_2$ZnIrO$_6$, where nonmagnetic Zn atom replaces the Co atom. An in-depth analysis of the magnetic states in th…
We report on our investigation on the magnetism of the iridate double perovskite Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$, a nominally Ir$^{5+}$ Van Vleck $J_{eff}=0$ system. Using x-ray absorption (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy at the Ir-$L_{2,3}$ edges, we found a nearly zero orbital contribution to the magnetic moment and thus an apparent breakdown of the $J_{eff}=0$ ground state. By carrying out also XAS and XMCD experiments at the Co-$L_{2,3}$ edges and by performing detailed full atomic multiplet calculations to simulate all spectra, we discovered that the compound consists of ab…
The magnetic ground states of the isostructural double perovskites Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$ and Ba$_2$LiOsO$_6$ are investigated with muon-spin rotation. In Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$ long-range magnetic order is detected via the onset of a spontaneous muon-spin precession signal below $T_{\mathrm{c}}=7.2\pm 0.2\;\mathrm{K}$, while in Ba$_2$LiOsO$_6$ a static but spatially-disordered internal field is found below 8 K. A novel probabilistic argument is used to show from the observed precession frequencies that the magnetic ground state in Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$ is most likely to be low-moment ($\approx 0.2$\,$μ_{\rm B}$)…
Magnetic frustration and disorder are key ingredients to prevent the onset of magnetic order. In the disordered hexagonal double perovskite BaTi$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$, Mn$^{4+}$ cations, with $S=3/2$ spins, can either form highly correlated states of magnetic trimers or dimers or remain as weakly interacting orphan spins. At low temperature ($T$), the dimer response is negligible, and magnetism is dominated by the trimers and orphans. To explore the role of magnetic frustration, disorder and possibly of quantum fluctuations, the low-$T$ magnetic properties of the remaining magnetic degrees …
The Fe electronic structure and magnetism in (i) monoclinic Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$ with a metal-insulator transition at $T_{MI} \sim 140$ K and (ii) quasi-cubic half-metallic Ba$_2$FeReO$_6$ ceramic double perovskites are probed by soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). These materials show distinct Fe $L_{2,3}$ XAS and XMCD spectra, which are primarily associated with their different average Fe oxidation states (close to Fe$^{3+}$ for Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$ and intermediate between Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ for Ba$_2$FeReO$_6$) despite being related by an isoelectron…
A comparative density functional plus dynamical mean field theory study of the pseudocubic ruthenate materials CaRuO$_3$ and SrRuO$_3$ is presented. Phase diagrams are determined for both materials as a function of Hubbard repulsion $U$ and Hund's rule coupling $J$. Metallic and insulating phases are found, as are ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states. The locations of the relevant phase boundaries are determined. Based on the computed phase diagrams, Mott-dominated and Hund's dominated regimes of strong correlation are distinguished. Comparison of calculated properties to experiments indicate…
We investigate the metal-insulator transition in the layered Ruddelsden Popper series of strontium iridates Srn+1IrnO3n+1. Tight-binding models of t2g orbitals for n = 1, 2, and infinity are constructed, and changes in band dispersion due to dimensionality and spin-orbit coupling are presented. Identifying the states near the Fermi level to be predominantly Jeff = 1/2, we use an effective Hubbard model to study the effect of correlations. Transitions from a metallic state to various magnetically ordered states at different critical interactions are obtained. A canted antiferromagnetic insulato…
The 3$d$-5$d$ based double perovskites are of current interest as they provide model system to study the interplay between electronic correlation ($U$) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here we report detailed structural, magnetic and transport properties of doped double perovskite material (Sr$_{1-x}$Y$_x$)$_2$FeIrO$_6$ with $x$ $\leq$ 0.2. With substitution of Y, system retains its original crystal structure but structural parameters modify with $x$ in nonmonotonic fashion. The magnetization data for Sr$_2$FeIrO$_6$ show antiferromagnetic type magnetic transition around 45 K, however, a close i…
Ferromagnetism and its evolution in the orthorhombic perovskite system Sr1-xCaxRuO3 have been widely believed to correlate with the structural distortion. The recent development of high-pressure synthesis of the Ba substituted Sr1-yBayRuO3 makes it possible to study ferromagnetism over a broader phase diagram, which includes new orthorhombic Imma and the cubic phases. However, the chemical substitutions introduce the A-site disorder effect on Tc, which complicates determination of the relationship between ferromagnetism and the structural distortion. By clarifying the site disorder effect on T…

We present a detailed de Haas van Alphen effect study of the perovskite CaVO3, offering an unprecedented test of electronic structure calculations in a 3d transition metal oxide. Our experimental and calculated Fermi surfaces are in good agreement -- but only if we ignore large orthorhombic distortions of the cubic perovskite structure. Subtle discrepancies may shed light on an apparent conflict between the low energy properties of CaVO3, which are those of a simple metal, and high energy probes which reveal strong correlations that place CaVO3 on the verge of a metal-insulator transition.
Our detailed temperature dependent synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction studies along with first-principles density functional perturbation theory calculations, enable us to shed light on the origin of ferroelectricity in GdCrO3. The actual lattice symmetry is found to be noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic Pna21 structure, sup- porting polar nature of the system. Polar distortion is driven by local symmetry breaking and by local distortions dominated by Gd off-centering. Our study reveals an intimate analogy between GdCrO3 and YCrO3. However, a distinctive difference exists that Gd is less displa…
First-principles calculations reveal a large cooperative coupling of Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion to oxygen-octahedron rotations in perovskite LaMnO$_3$. The combination of the two distortions is responsible for stabilizing the strongly orthorhombic $A$-AFM insulating ($I$) $Pbnm$ ground state relative to a metallic ferromagnetic (FM-$M$) phase. However, epitaxial strain due to coherent matching to a crystalline substrate can change the relative stability of the two states. In particular, coherent matching to a square-lattice substrate favors the less orthorhombic FM-$M$ phase, with the $A$-AFM…
The synthesis and characterization of the previously unknown material LaCaScIrO$_6$ is reported. LaCaScIrO$_6$ presents a new example of the rare case of a double perovskite with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5\textit{d}-ion Ir$^{4+}$ as its only magnetic species, forming a monoclinically distorted version of the frustrated fcc lattice. Magnetization measurements show a weak anomaly at 8~K. The Curie-Weiss temperature Θ$_{CW}$ and effective magnetic moment μ$_{eff}$ of LaCaScIrO$_6$ are in close proximity to the related compound La$_2$MgIrO$_6$ but differ from La$_2$ZnIrO$_6$. This suggests …
Structural, magnetic and electric properties of a metal-ordered perovskite YBaMn2O6 have been studied by means of powder X-ray diffraction, DSC, magnetic susceptibility, and electric resistivity. It is found that this material undergoes a 1st order structural phase transition at Tc1=520 K, from a pseudo orthorhombic (monoclinic) phase to a pseudo tetragonal (monoclinic) one. Accompanied by this transition, the susceptibility exhibits a sharp drop, where ferromagnetic exchange interaction becomes antiferromagnetic. Furthermore, two more transitions, a metal-insulator transition at Tc2=480 K and…
There have been increasing efforts in realizing topological metallic phases with nontrivial surface states. It was suggested that orthorhombic perovskite iridates are classified as a topological crystalline metal (TCM) with flat surface states protected by lattice symmetries. Here we perform first-principles electronic structure calculations for epitaxially stabilized orthorhombic perovskite iridates. Remarkably, two different types of topological surface states are found depending on surface directions. On side surfaces, flat surface states protected by lattice symmetries emerge, manifesting …
Understanding the structural underpinnings of magnetism is of great fundamental and practical interest. Se_{1-x}Te_{x}CuO_{3} alloys are model systems for the study of this question, as composition-induced structural changes control their magnetic interactions. Our work reveals that this structural tuning is associated with the position of the supposedly dummy atoms Se and Te relative to the super-exchange (SE) Cu--O--Cu paths, and not with the SE angles as previously thought. We use density functional theory, tight-binding, and exact diagonalization methods to unveil the cause of this surpris…
The magnetism of the double perovskite compounds \SLFCOx\ ($x$ = 0, 1, 2) are contrasted using magnetization, neutron diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance with the support from density functional theory calculations. \LFCO\ is identified as a long-range ordered antiferromagnet displaying a near-room temperature transition at $T_N$ = 270~K, accompanied by a low temperature structural phase transition at $T_S$ = 200~K. The structural phase transformation at $T_S$ occurs from $R\overline{3}c$ at 300~K to $Pnma$ at 200~K. The density functional theory calculations support an insulating …
The low energy spin excitations of the Fe pnictide parent compounds have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering and interpreted within the local moment J_1a,b-J_2 Heisenberg model with orthorhombic symmetry. This has led to alternative exchange models that strongly differ in the size of anisotropy. Although the compounds are itinerant the localised spin model can explain basic features of the excitations. The inherent frustration of this model leads to quantum fluctuations and possible moment reduction. We investigate this question in detail using spin wave approximation and partly ex…
Investigation of elementary excitations has advanced our understanding of many-body physics governing most physical properties of matter. Recently spin-orbit excitons have drawn much attention, whose condensates near phase transitions exhibit Higgs mode oscillations, a long-sought physical phenomenon [Nat. Phys. {\bf 13}, 633 (2017)]. These critical transition points resulting from competing spin-orbit coupling (SOC), local crystalline symmetry and exchange interactions, are not obvious in Iridium based materials, where SOC prevails in general. Here, we present results of resonant inelastic x-…
We show that the transition in AMnO3 from the orthorhombic perovskite phase to the hexagonal phase is promoted by inducing disorder on the A-site. The gap between the orthorhombic and the hexagonal phase is widened for disordered, mixed yttrium-gadolinium manganite samples. At the cost of the orthorhombic phase a two phase region emerges. The phase separation exhibits very unusual thermodynamical behaviour. We also show that high pressure synthesis favours the orthorhombic phase. YMnO3 is formed in the orthorhombic phase at 15 kbar.
The new perovskite cuprate material Sr$_{8}$CaRe$_{3}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{24}$, which behaves ferrimagnetically and shows an unusually high Curie temperature ($T_c \sim$ 440 K), is found from density-functional theory calculation to display several surprising properties after hole doping or chemical substitution: (1) Half metal (HM) is realized by replacing Re with W or Mo while $T_c$ remains high; (2) hole-doped Sr$_{8}$CaRe$_{3}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{24}$ is also HM with high $T_c$. Moreover, we find that the O atoms will carry a large magnetic moment after hole doping, which is in sharp contrast with the gen…
Taking into account Goodenough's superexchange rules, including both full structural relaxation and spin-orbit coupling, and checking strong correlation effects, we look for compensated half metals within the class of oxide double perovskites materials. Identifying likely half metallic (or half semimetallic) antiferromagnets, the full complications including orbital magnetism are included in order to arrive at realistic predictions of designed magnetic compounds with (near) vanishing net moment. After sorting through several candidates that have not been considered previously, two materials, K…
It is argued that the non-collinear orbital magnetism accompanying the orthorhombic distortion is an important ingredient which should be taken into consideration for making promising materials with the best magneto-optical characteristics on the basis of SrRuO$_3$.
The structural and magnetic properties of the face-centered cubic double perovskite Ba2MnWO6 were investigated using neutron powder diffraction, DC-magnetometry, muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering. Ba2MnWO6 undergoes Type II long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at a Neel temperature of 8(1) K with a frustration index, f = 8. Inelastic neutron scattering was used to identify the magnetic coupling constants J1 and J2, which were found to equal -0.080 meV and -0.076 meV respectively. This indicated that both of the magnetic coupling constants were antiferromagnetic with simila…
Magnetically-driven ferroelectric atomic displacements of the order of 10$^{-3} Angstrom have been observed in orthorhombic (perovskite like) YMnO$_3$ by a single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The refined polar structure shows the characteristic bond alternation driven by the exchange striction in staggered Mn-O-Mn arrays with $\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$ type ordering, giving rise to a spontaneous polarization along a-axis. First-principles calculations based on the Berry phase method as well as on the experimentally refined crystal structure can reproduce the observed pola…
Pressure induced phase transitions of MIAgIIF3 perovskites where M = K, Rb, Cs, have been predicted theoretically for the first time for pressures up to 100 GPa. The sequence of phase transitions for M = K and Rb consists of an orthorhombic to monoclinic and back to orthorhombic transition, associated with progressive bending of infinite chains of corner sharing [AgF6]4 minus octahedra and their mutual approaching via secondary Ag...F contacts. In stark contrast, only a single phase transition i.e. tetragonal to triclinic, is predicted for CsAgF3, associated with substantial deformation of the…
AMX$_3$ compounds are structurally diverse, a notable example being the post-perovskite structure which adopts a two-dimensional framework with corner- and edge-sharing octahedra. Few molecular post-perovskites are known and of these, none have reported magnetic structures. Here we report the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of molecular post-perovskites: CsNi(NCS)$_3$, a thiocyanate framework, and two new isostructural analogues CsCo(NCS)$_3$ and CsMn(NCS)$_3$. Magnetisation measurements show that all three compounds undergo magnetic order. CsNi(NCS)$_3$ (Curie temperature, $T_\ma…
We present a comprehensive experimental study of magnetization and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in double perovskite (DP) materials $R_2$NiMnO$_6$ with $R =$ Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy. While a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, with T$_{\rm C}$ in the range $\sim 100 - 200~$K, is a common feature that can be attributed to the ordering of Mn$^{4+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ magnetic moments, qualitatively distinct behavior depending on the choice of $R$ is observed at low temperatures. These low-temperature anomalies in magnetization are also manifest in the change in magnetic entropy, $-ΔS_{M}$, wh…
