The title is self-explanatory. We aim to give an easy to read and self-contained introduction to the field of harmonic manifolds. Only basic knowledge of Riemannian geometry is required. After we gave the definition of harmonicity and derived some properties, we concentrate on Z. I. Szabó's proof of Lichnerowicz's conjecture in the class of compact simply connected manifolds.
We construct the first known examples of compact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds having an essential group of conformal transformations, and which are not conformally flat. Our examples cover all types $(p,q)$, with $2 \leq p \leq q$.
Given a compact, three-dimensional, real-analytic Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$, we prove that the identity component of the conformal group preserves a metric in the conformal class $[g]$, or $(M,g)$ is conformally flat.
The original version of the paper claimed to disprove the pseudo-Riemannian Lichnerowicz conjecture of D'Ambra and Gromov. However, the argument contains a crucial sign error in the lines following equation (8).
Two Kähler metrics on a complex manifold are called c-projectively equivalent if their $J$-planar curves coincide. These curves are defined by the property that the acceleration is complex proportional to the velocity. We give an explicit local description of all pairs of c-projectively equivalent Kähler metrics of arbitrary signature and use this description to prove the classical Yano-Obata conjecture: we show that on a closed connected Kähler manifold of arbitrary signature, any c-projective vector field is an affine vector field unless the manifold is $CP^n$ with (a multiple of) the Fubini…
In this paper we give a proof of Lichnerowicz Conjecture for compact simply connected manifolds which is intrinsic in the sense that it avoids the {\it Nice Embeddings} into eigen spaces of the Laplacian. Even if one wants to use these embeddings this paper gives a more streamlined proof.
We prove the Finsler analog of the conformal Lichnerowicz-Obata conjecture showing that a complete and essential conformal vector field on a non-Riemannian Finsler manifold is a homothetic vector field of a Minkowski metric.
We construct examples of nondegenerate CR manifolds with Levi form of signature $(p,q)$, $2\leq p\leq q$, which are compact, not locally CR flat, and admit essential CR vector fields. We also construct an example of a noncompact nondegenerate CR manifold with signature $(1,n-1)$ which is not locally CR flat and admits an essential CR vector fields. These provide counterexamples to the analogue of the Lichnerowicz conjecture for CR manifolds with mixed signature.
We solve two classical conjectures by showing that if an action of a connected Lie group on a complete Riemannian manifold preserves the geodesics (considered as unparameterized curves), then the metric has constant positive sectional curvature, or the group acts by affine transformations.
In this paper, we show several rigidity results for harmonic $(p,q)$-forms in complete Kähler manifolds. We also give several applications to study non-compact Kähler manifolds with parallel Bochner tensor or quaternion Kähler manifolds. Our results are natural extensions of Petersen and Wink's results in \cite{PW21, PW} in the setting of complete, non-compact Kähler manifolds.
We prove an important partial case of the pseudo-Riemannian version of the projective Lichnerowicz conjecture stating that a complete manifold admitting an essential group of projective transformations is the round sphere (up to a finite cover).
We derive point-wise and integral rigidity/gap results for a closed manifold with harmonic Weyl curvature in any dimension. In particular, there is a generalization of Tachibana's theorem for non-negative curvature operator. The key ingredients are new Bochner-Weitzenböck-Lichnerowicz type formulas for the Weyl tensor, which are generalizations of identities in dimension four.
The Lichnerowicz conjecture asserts that all harmonic manifolds are either flat or locally symmetric spaces of rank~1. This conjecture has been proved by Z. Szabó \cite{Sz} for harmonic manifolds with compact universal cover. E. Damek and F. Ricci \cite{DR} provided examples showing that in the noncompact case the conjecture is wrong. However, such manifolds do not admit a compact quotient. In this paper we study, using a notion of rank, the asymptotic geometry and the geodesic flow on simply connected nonflat and noncompact harmonic manifolds denoted by $X$. In the first part of the paper we …
A Riemannian manifold is called harmonic if its volume density function expressed in polar coordinates centered at any point is radial. Flat and rank-one symmetric spaces are harmonic. The converse (the Lichnerowicz Conjecture) is true for manifolds of nonnegative scalar curvature and for some other classes of manifolds, but is not true in general: there exists a family of homogeneous harmonic spaces, the Damek-Ricci spaces, containing noncompact rank-one symmetric spaces, as well as infinitely many nonsymmetric examples. We prove that a harmonic homogeneous manifold of nonpositive curvature i…
f-Harmonic maps were first introduced and studied by Lichnerowicz in \cite{Li} (see also Section 10.20 in Eells-Lemaire's report \cite{EL}). In this paper, we study a subclass of f-harmonic maps called f-harmonic morphisms which pull back local harmonic functions to local f-harmonic functions. We prove that a map between Riemannian manifolds is an f-harmonic morphism if and only if it is a horizontally weakly conformal f-harmonic map. This generalizes the well-known Fuglede-Ishihara characterization for harmonic morphisms. Some properties and many examples as well as some non-existence of f-ha…
The Lichnerowicz conjecture asserts that all harmonic manifolds are either flat or locally symmetric spaces of rank 1. This conjecture has been proved by Z.I. Szabo for harmonic manifolds with compact universal cover. E. Damek and F. Ricci provided examples showing that in the noncompact case the conjecture is wrong. However, such manifolds do not admit a compact quotient. The classification of all noncompact harmonic spaces is still a very difficult open problem. In this paper we provide a survey on recent results on noncompact simply connected harmonic manifolds, and we also prove many new r…
We give conditions on the Lee vector field of an almost Hermitian manifold such that any holomorphic map from this manifold into a (1,2)-symplectic manifold must satisfy the fourth-order condition of being biharmonic, hence generalizing the Lichnerowicz theorem on harmonic maps. These third-order non-linear conditions are shown to greatly simplify on l.c.K. manifolds and construction methods and examples are given in all dimensions.
An explicit lower bound for the mass of an asymptotically flat Riemannian 3-manifold is given in terms of linear growth harmonic functions and scalar curvature. As a consequence, a new proof of the positive mass theorem is achieved in dimension three. The proof has parallels with both the Schoen-Yau minimal hypersurface technique and Witten's spinorial approach. In particular, the role of harmonic spinors and the Lichnerowicz formula in Witten's argument is replaced by that of harmonic functions and a formula introduced by the fourth named author in recent work, while the level sets of harmoni…
Ejiri gave a negative answer to a conjecture of Lichnerowicz concerning Riemannian manifolds with constant scalar curvature admitting an infinitesimal non isometric conformal transformation. With this aim he constructed a warped product of a circle of lenght $T$ and a compact manifold. But he omitted in his analysis the condition that $T$ must to be big enough. Here we give an explicit sharp bound $T_0 < T$ that will make the proof complete. Our presentation is self-contained and mainly uses bifurcation techniques. Moreover, we show that there are other such examples and contribute some result…
The main goal in this paper is to point out that quantity $||\nabla R||^2(p)$ on a harmonic space can not be determined by the spectra of local geodesic spheres or balls, therefore the main results of [AM-S] (quoted in the title) are wrong. My strong interest in the above theorem is motivated by the fact that it contradicts some of my isospectrality examples constructed on geodesic spheres and balls of certain harmonic manifolds. The authors overlooked that the Lichnerowicz identity is not determined by the given spectral data, and so is the final crucial equation obtained by eliminating with …
On a compact n-dimensional manifold, it has been conjectured that a critical point metric of the total scalar curvature, restricted to the space of metrics with constant scalar curvature of unit volume, will be Einstein. This conjecture was proposed in 1984 by Besse, but has yet to be proved. In this paper, we prove that if the manifold with the critical point metric has harmonic curvature, then it is isometric to a standard sphere.
In this paper, we investigate critical maps of the horizontal energy functional $E_{H,\widetilde{H}}(f)$ for maps between two pseudo-Hermitian manifolds $(M^{2m+1},H(M),J,θ)$ and $(N^{2n+1},\widetilde{H}(N), \widetilde{J},\widetildeθ)$. These critical maps are referred to as $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps. We derive a CR Bochner formula for the horizontal energy density $|df_{H, \widetilde{H}}|^{2}$, and introduce a Paneitz type operator acting on maps to refine the Bochner formula. As a result, we are able to establish some Bochner type theorems for $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps. We al…
We proved two Three Circles Theorems for harmonic functions on manifolds in integral sense. As one application, on manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature, whose tangent cone at infinity is the unique metric cone with unique conic measure, we showed the existence of nonconstant harmonic functions with polynomial growth. This existence result recovered and generalized the former result of Y. Ding, and led to a complete answer of L. Ni's conjecture. Furthermore in similar context, combining the techniques of estimating the frequency of harmonic functions with polynomial growth, which were deve…
The CR analogue of B.-Y. Chen's conjecture on pseudo biharmonic maps will be shown. Pseudo biharmonic, but not pseudo harmonic, isometric immersions with parallel pseudo mean curvature vector fields, will be characterized. Several examples of pseudo biharmonic maps will be given.
J. Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and Wang Shaobo showed the first variational formula. When, k=2, it is called biharmonic maps (2-harmonic maps). There have been extensive studies in the area. In this paper, we consider the relationship between biharmonic maps and k-harmonic maps, and show non-existence theorem of 3-harmonic maps. We also give the definition of k-harmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spaces, and study k-harmonic curve in Euclidean spaces. Futhermore, we give a conjecture for k-harmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spaces.
In this paper we give an explicit bound of $Δ_{g(t)}u(t)$ and the local curvature estimates for the Ricci-harmonic flow under the condition that the Ricci curvature is bounded along the flow. In the second part these local curvature estimates are extended to a class of generalized Ricci flow, introduced by the author \cite{LY1}, whose stable points give Ricci-flat metrics on a complete manifold, and which is very close to the $(K, N)$-super Ricci flow recently defined by Xiangdong Li and Songzi Li \cite{LL2014}. Next we propose a conjecture for Einstein's scalar field equations motivated by a …
We give the twistor description of harmonic maps of the Riemann sphere into the Hilbert-Schmidt Grassmannian. The study of such maps is motivated by the harmonic spheres conjecture formulated in the beginning of this paper.

We present reformulation of Mathieu's result on representing cohomology classes of symplectic manifold with symplectically harmonic forms. We apply it to the case of foliated manifolds with transversally symplectic structure and to symplectic orbifolds. We obtain in particular that such representation is always possible for compact Kähler orbifolds.
We consider the energy spectrum $Ξ_E(N)$ of harmonic maps from the sphere into a closed Riemannian manifold $N$. While a well known conjecture asserts that $Ξ_E(N)$ is discrete whenever $N$ is analytic, for most analytic targets it is only known that any potential accumulation point of the energy spectrum must be given by the sum of the energies of at least two harmonic spheres. The lowest energy level that could hence potentially be an accumulation point of $Ξ_E$ is thus $2 E_{min}$. In the present paper we exclude this possibility for generic 3 manifolds and prove additional results that est…
In this article, we consider the set of points for the holding of the equality in a weighted version of Suita conjecture for higher derivatives, and give relations between the set and the integer valued points of a class of harmonic functions (maybe multi-valued). For planar domains bounded by finite analytic closed curves, we give relations between the set and Dirichlet problem.
Using the harmonic superspace formalism, we find the metric of a certain 8-dimensional manifold. This manifold is not compact and represents an 8-dimensional generalization of the Taub-NUT manifold. Our conjecture is that the metric that we derived is equivalent to the known metric possessing a discrete $Z_2$ isometry, which may be obtained from the metric describing the dynamics of four BPS monopoles by Hamiltonian reduction.
