Motivated by recent proposals for the generation of Majorana fermions in semiconducting hybrid structures, we examine possible experimental fingerprints of such excitations. Whereas previous works mainly have focused on zero-energy states in vortex cores in this context, we demonstrate analytically an alternative route to detection of Majorana excitations in semiconducting hybrid structures: interface-bound states that may be probed directly via conductance spectroscopy or STM-measurements. We estimate the necessary experimental parameters required for observation of our predictions.
We have investigated the possible presence of Majorana fermions in a semiconductor quantum ring containing a few interacting electrons, and a strong spin-orbit interaction, proximity coupled to an s-wave superconductor. We have found that for rings with sizes of a few hundred angstroms and for certain values of the chemical potential and the entire range of the magnetic field, there are strong indications of the presence of Majorana fermions. In particular, the ground state energies and the average electron numbers for the states with even and odd electron numbers are almost identical. We have…
We propose a new approach to create Majorana fermions at the edge of a periodically driven semiconductor-superconductor Heterostructure. We calculate the quasi-energy spectrum of the periodically driven Heterostructure by using the Floquet's theory. When the interaction between different Brillouin zones of quasi-energy is neglected, one Majorana fermion can be created at each edge of the Heterostructure when the ratio of driven amplitude and driven frequency is larger than a minimum. Furthermore, when the interaction between the nearest Brillouin zones of quasi-energy is considered, we restric…
We calculate the cross section for optical absorption of planar 2D Majorana nanowires. Light is described in the dipole approximation. We discuss the signatures on the cross section of a near-zero-energy mode. A low energy peak for transverse polarization, absent in longitudinal one, reveals the presence of the Majorana-like state. This peak is relatively robust against thermal smearing of the level occupations. We consider the influence of optical masks hiding parts of the nanowire from the light.
We use the available transport measurements in the literature to develop a dataset for the likely amount of disorder in semiconductor (InAs and InSb) materials which are used in fabricating the superconductor-semiconductor nanowire samples in the experimental search for Majorana zero modes. Using the estimated disorder in direct Majorana simulations, we conclude that the current level of disorder in semiconductor Majorana nanowires is at least an order of magnitude higher than that necessary for the emergence of topological Majorana zero modes. In agreement with existing results, we find that …
We study Majorana zero modes properties in cylindrical cross-section semiconductor quantum wires based on the $k \cdot p$ theory and a discretized lattice model. Within this model, the influence of disorder potentials in the wire and amplitude and phase fluctuations of the superconducting order-parameter are discussed. We find that for typical wire geometries, pairing potentials, and spin-orbit coupling strengths, coupling between quasi-one-dimensional sub-bands is weak, low-energy quasiparticles near the Fermi energy are nearly completely spin-polarized, and the number of electrons in the act…
One of the most promising platforms for one-dimensional topological superconductivity is based on semiconducting nanowires with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), where s-wave superconductivity is induced by proximity effect and an external Zeeman field drives the system into the topological superconducting phase with Majorana bound states (MBSs) at the end of the wire. During last years this idea has led to a great number of important experiments in hybrid superconductor-semiconductor systems, where the main signature is an emergent zero-bias peak (ZBP) in the differential conductance as the Z…
We study the effect of gate-induced electric fields on the properties of semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowires which represent a promising platform for realizing topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes. Using a self-consistent Schrödinger-Poisson approach that describes the semiconductor and the superconductor on equal footing, we are able to access the strong tunneling regime and identify the impact of an applied gate voltage on the coupling between semiconductor and superconductor. We discuss how physical parameters such as the induced superconducting gap and Landé g-fa…
We study the effect of external electric fields on superconductor-semiconductor coupling by measuring the electron transport in InSb semiconductor nanowires coupled to an epitaxially grown Al superconductor. We find that the gate voltage induced electric fields can greatly modify the coupling strength, which has consequences for the proximity induced superconducting gap, effective g-factor, and spin-orbit coupling, which all play a key role in understanding Majorana physics. We further show that level repulsion due to spin-orbit coupling in a finite size system can lead to seemingly stable zer…
Majorana fermions (MFs) are predicted to occur as zero-energy bound states in semiconductor nanowire-superconductor structures. However, in the presence of disorder or smooth confining potentials, these structures can also host non-topological nearly-zero energy states. Here, we demonstrate that the MFs and the nearly-zero topologically-trivial states have different characteristic signatures in a tunneling conductance measurement, which allows to clearly discriminate between them. We also show that low-energy non-topological states can strongly hybridize with metallic states from the leads, wh…
Majorana zero modes in a superconductor-semiconductor nanowire have been extensively studied during the past decade. Disorder remains a serious problem, preventing the definitive observation of topological Majorana bound states. Thus, it is worthwhile to revisit the simple model, the Kitaev chain, and study the effects of weak and strong disorder on the Kitaev chain. By comparing the role of disorder in a Kitaev chain with that in a nanowire, we find that disorder affects both systems but in a nonuniversal manner. In general, disorder has a much stronger effect on the nanowire than the Kitaev …
We demonstrate that partially overlapping Majorana bound states (MBSs) represent a generic low-energy feature that emerges in non-homogeneous semiconductor nanowires coupled to superconductors in the presence of a Zeeman field. The emergence of these low-energy modes is not correlated with any topological quantum phase transition that the system may undergo as the Zeeman field and other control parameters are varied. Increasing the characteristic length scale of the variations in the potential leads to a continuous evolution from strongly overlapping MBSs, which can be viewed as "regular" Andr…
We investigate the Majorana fermions in a $T$-shaped semiconductor nanostructure with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field in the proximity of an s-wave superconductor. It is found that the properties of the low-energy modes (including the Majorana and near-zero-energy modes) at the ends of this system are similar to those in the Majorana nanowire. However, very distinct from the nanowire, one Majorana mode emerges at the intersection of the $T$-shaped structure when the number of the low-energy modes at each end $N$ is odd, whereas neither Majorana nor near-zero-energy mode app…
We show that partially separated Andreev bound states (ps-ABSs), comprised of pairs of overlapping Majorana bound states (MBSs) emerging in quantum dot-semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures, produce robust zero bias conductance plateaus in end-of-wire charge tunneling experiments. These plateaus remain quantized at $2e^2/h$ over large ranges of experimental control parameters. In light of recent experiments reporting the observation of robust $2e^2/h$-quantized conductance plateaus in local charge tunneling experiments, we perform extensive numerical calculations to explicitly show tha…
A number of recent works have discussed the issue of spin polarization of a Majorana zero mode in condensed matter systems. Here we show that the spin polarization density of a Majorana zero mode, computed as an average of the spin operator over its wave function, vanishes everywhere. A single non-degenerate Majorana zero mode, therefore, does not couple to an applied magnetic field, except via hybridization with higher energy excited states (if present), which may perturb its wave function. If `spin' is defined by considering only the particle components of the wave function, as has been done…
Coupled Majorana zero modes with nonzero energies are generally detrimental to the non-Abelian statistics due to the additional dynamic phase. Nevertheless, we show that a well-connected lead can introduce a local non-Hermitian dissipation term to shift the energies of the both coupled Majorana modes to zero, and surprisingly turn the coupled Majorana mode far from the lead into a dark Majorana mode with exponentially small dissipation. This dark Majorana mode can conquer the drawback of the partially overlapped Majorana zero modes and possess the properties of true Majorana zero mode such as …
We investigate the charge transport in a semiconductor nanowire that is subject to a perpendicular magnetic field and in partial contact with an \textit{s}-wave superconductor. We find that Majorana fermions, existing at the interface between superconducting and normal sections of the nanowire within certain parameter region, can induce resonant Andreev reflection of electrons at the interface, which yields a zero energy peak in the electrical conductance of the nanowire. The width of the zero energy conductance peak for different experimental parameters is characterized. While the zero energy…
We propose a method for solving the Schrodinger-Poisson problem that can be efficiently implemented in realistic 3D tight-binding models of semiconductor-based Majorana devices. The method is based on two key ideas: i) For a given geometry, the Poisson problem is only solved once (for each local orbital) and the results are stored as an interaction tensor; using this Green's function scheme, the Poisson component of the iteration procedure is reduced to a few simple summations. ii) The 3D problem is mapped into an effective multi-orbital 1D problem with molecular orbitals calculated self-consi…
We study the effects of strong coupling between a superconductor and a semiconductor nanowire on the creation of the Majorana bound states, when the quasiparticle dwell time in the normal part of the nanowire is much shorter than the inverse superconducting gap. This "short junction" limit is relevant for the recent experiments using the epitaxially grown aluminum characterized by a transparent interface with the semiconductor and a small superconducting gap. We find that the small superconducting gap does not have a strong detrimental effect on the Majorana properties. Specifically, both the …
We theoretically consider the ubiquitous soft gap measured in the tunneling conductance of semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures, in which recently observed signatures of elusive Majorana bound states have created much excitement. We systematically study the effects of magnetic and non-magnetic disorder, temperature, dissipative Cooper pair breaking, and interface inhomogeneity, which could lead to a soft gap. We find that interface inhomogeneity with moderate dissipation is the only viable mechanism that is consistent with the experimental observations. Our work indicates that improv…
We investigate theoretically the low energy physics of semiconductor Majorana wires in the vicinity of a magnetic field-driven topological quantum phase transition (TQPT). The local density of states (LDOS) at the end of the wire, which is directly related to the differential conductance in the limit of point-contact tunneling, is calculated numerically. We find that the dependence of the end-of-wire LDOS on the magnetic field is non-universal and that the signatures associated with the closing of the superconducting gap at the Majorana TQPT are essentially invisible within a significant range…
We investigate a heterostructure system with a spin-orbit coupled semiconductor sandwiched by an s-wave superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator, which supports Majorana fermions (MFs) at the superconducting vortex cores. We propose a scheme of transporting and braiding the MFs, which only requires application of point-like gate voltages in a system with nano-meter patterns. By solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation numerically, we monitor the time evolutions of MF wave-functions and show that the braiding of MFs with non-Abelian statistics can be achieved by adiabatic sw…
Spin-orbit coupled semiconductor nanowires with Zeeman splitting in proximity contact with bulk $s$-wave superconductivity have recently been proposed as a promising platform for realizing Majorana fermions. However, in this setup the chemical potential of the nanowire is generally pinned by the Fermi surface of the superconductor. This makes the tuning of the chemical potential by external electrical gates, a crucial requirement for unambiguous detection of Majorana fermions, very challenging in experiments. Here we show that tunable topological superconducting regime supporting Majorana ferm…
Realizing topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes in the laboratory is one of the major goals in condensed matter physics. We review the current status of this rapidly-developing field, focusing on semiconductor-superconductor proposals for topological superconductivity. Material science progress and robust signatures of Majorana zero modes in recent experiments are discussed. After a brief introduction to the subject, we outline several next-generation experiments probing exotic properties of Majorana zero modes, including fusion rules and non-Abelian exchange statistics. Finall…
Subband occupancy (i.e. the number of occupied subbands or energy levels in the semiconductor) is a key physical parameter characterizing the topological properties of superconductor-semiconductor hybrid systems in the context of the search for non-Abelian Majorana zero modes. We theoretically study the subband occupation of semiconductor nanowire devices as function of the applied gate potential, the semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) work function difference, and the surface charge density by solving self-consistently the Schrödinger-Poisson equations for the conduction electrons of the se…
Recent observations of a zero bias conductance peak in tunneling transport measurements in superconductor--semiconductor nanowire devices provide evidence for the predicted zero--energy Majorana modes, but not the conclusive proof for their existence. We establish that direct observation of a splitting of the zero bias conductance peak can serve as the smoking gun evidence for the existence of the Majorana mode. We show that the splitting has an oscillatory dependence on the Zeeman field (chemical potential) at fixed chemical potential (Zeeman field). By contrast, when the density is constant …
In proximity to an s-wave superconductor, a one- or two-dimensional, electron- or hole-doped semiconductor with a sizable spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman splitting can support a topological superconducting (TS) state. The semiconductor TS state has Majorana fermions as localized zero-energy excitations at order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. Here we examine the effects of quenched disorder from the semiconductor surface on the stability of the TS state in both electron- and hole-doped semiconductors. By considering the interplay of broken time reversal symmetry (due to Z…
After a recent series of rapid and exciting developments, the long search for the Majorana fermion - the elusive quantum entity at the border between particles and antiparticles - has produced the first positive experimental results, but is not over yet. Originally proposed by E. Majorana in the context of particle physics, Majorana fermions have a condensed matter analog in the zero-energy bound states emerging in topological superconductors. A promising route to engineering topological superconductors capable of hosting Majorana zero modes consists of proximity coupling semiconductor thin fi…
Recent observation of zero bias conductance peaks in semiconductor wire/superconductor heterostructures has generated great interest, and there is a hot debate on whether the observation is associated with Majorana fermions (MFs). Here we study the local and crossed Andreev reflections in a junction of two normal leads and a sandwiched superconductor-semiconductor wire with two spatially separated but strongly coupled MF end states. The conductance and Fano factors of such a device are sharply different from the topologically trivial case even in the presence of disorder, and can hence be used…
We study the energy spectrum of a vortex core in a two-dimensional semiconductor with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and proximity-coupled to a conventional superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator. We perform self-consistent calculations using the microscopic tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes method on a lattice and confirm the existence of Majorana fermions in the non-trivial topological phase. We also find two different topologically trivial bulk superconducting phases, only differing in the type of vortex core structure they support and separated by a zero-energy excitation. Furthermor…
We show that the microwave (MW) spectra in semiconductor-nanowire-based transmon qubits provide a strong signature of the presence of Majorana bound states in the junction. This occurs as an external magnetic field tunes the wire into the topological regime and the energy splitting of the emergent Majorana modes oscillates around zero energy owing to their wave function spatial overlap in finite-length wires. In particular, we discuss how these Majorana oscillations, and the concomitant fermion parity switches in the ground state of the junction, result in distinct spectroscopic features --in …
Semiconductor nanowires such as InAs and InSb are promising materials for studying Majorana zero-modes and demonstrating non-Abelian particle exchange relevant for topological quantum computing. While evidence for Majorana bound states in nanowires has been shown, the majority of these experiments are marked by significant disorder. In particular, the interfacial inhomogeneity between the superconductor and nanowire is strongly believed to be the main culprit for disorder and the resulting soft superconducting gap ubiquitous in tunneling studies of hybrid semiconductor-superconductor systems. …
Recent tunneling conductance measurements on semiconductor-superconductor nanowires find zero-bias peaks to be ubiquitous across wide ranges of chemical potential and Zeeman energy. Motivated by this, we demonstrate that topologically-trivial Andreev abound states (ABSs) pinned near zero energy are produced rather generically in inhomogeneous systems with multi-band occupancy in the presence of inter-band coupling. We first investigate the inter-band coupling mechanism responsible for the pinning within a multi-band 1D toy model, then we confirm the findings using a 3D Schrödinger-Poisson appr…
We study a semiconductor wire with strong spin-orbit coupling, which is proximity-coupled to a superconductor with chemical potential disorder. When tunneling at the semiconductor- superconductor interface is very weak, it is known that disorder in the superconductor does not affect the induced superconductivity nor, therefore, the effective topological superconductivity that emerges above a critical magnetic field. We demonstrate nonperturbatively how this result breaks down with stronger proximity coupling by obtaining the low-energy (i.e., subgap) excitation spectrum through direct numerica…
A minimal model for the hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire Majorana platform is developed that fully captures the effects of the low-energy renormalization of the nanowire modes arising from the presence of the parent superconductor. In this model, the parent superconductor is an active component that participates explicitly in the low-energy physics, not just a passive partner that only provides proximity-induced Cooper pairs for the nanowire. This treatment on an equal footing of the superconductor and the semiconductor has become necessary in view of recent experiments, which do n…

Semiconductors in the proximity of superconductors have been proposed to support phases hosting Majorana bound states. When the systems undergo a topological phase transition towards the Majorana phase, the spectral gap closes, then reopens, and the quasiparticle band spin polarization is inverted. We focus on two paradigmatic semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures and propose an all-electrical spectroscopic probe sensitive to the spin inversion at the topological transition. Our proposal relies on the indirect coupling of a time-dependent electric field to the electronic spin due to th…
Majorana fermions were envisioned by E. Majorana in 1935 to describe neutrinos. Recently it has been shown that they can be realized even in a class of electron-doped semiconductors, on which ordinary s-wave superconductivity is proximity induced, provided the time reversal symmetry is broken by an external Zeeman field above a threshold. Here we show that in a hole-doped semiconductor nanowire the threshold Zeeman field for Majorana fermions can be very small for some magic values of the hole density. In contrast to the electron-doped systems, smaller Zeeman fields and much stronger spin-orbi…
We show that a topologically trivial zero bias conductance peak (of height 4e^2/h) is produced in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowires due to a suppressed pair potential and/or an excess Zeeman field at the ends of the heterostructure, both of which can occur in experiments. The zero bias peak (ZBP) (a) appears above a threshold parallel bulk Zeeman field, (b) is stable for a range of bulk field before splitting, (c) disappears with rotation of the bulk Zeeman field, and, (d) is robust to weak disorder fluctuations. The ZBPs from the nanowire ends are also expected to produce splittin…
We investigate the local density of states, spectral function, and superconducting pair amplitudes for signatures of Majorana fermions in vortex cores in ferromagnetic and spin-orbit coupled semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures. We show that the Majorana fermion quasiparticle momentum distribution is always symmetrically distributed at a finite radius around a high symmetry point, thereby providing a necessary condition for a low-energy state to be a Majorana fermion. In real space profiles of the local density of states through the vortex core the Majorana fermion, together with othe…
Motivated by a recent experimental report[1] claiming the likely observation of the Majorana mode in a semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structure[2,3,4,5], we study theoretically the dependence of the zero bias conductance peak associated with the zero-energy Majorana mode in the topological superconducting phase as a function of temperature, tunnel barrier potential, and a magnetic field tilted from the direction of the wire for realistic wires of finite lengths. We find that higher temperatures and tunnel barriers as well as a large magnetic field in the direction transverse to the wire l…
Robust topologically trivial low-energy Andreev bound states (ABSs) induced by position-dependent effective potentials have recently come under renewed focus, in light of a remarkable set of experiments observing robust quantized zero-bias conductance plateaus in semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures. We show that (1) the partial spatial separation of the wave functions of the component Majorana bound states (MBSs) is crucial for the creation and stability of topologically trivial near-zero-energy Andreev bound states, (2) the signs of the spin polarizations of the component MBSs can b…
We develop a theory for the proximity effect in superconductor-semiconductor-normal metal tunneling structures, which have recently been extensively studied experimentally, leading to the observation of transport signatures consistent with the predicted zero-energy Majorana bound states. We show that our model for the semiconductor nanowire having multiple occupied subbands with different transmission probabilities through the barrier reproduces the observed "soft-gap" behavior associated with substantial subgap tunneling conductance. We study the manifestations of the soft gap phenomenon both…
The excitation gap above the Majorana fermion (MF) modes at the ends of 1D topological superconducting (TS) semiconductor wires scales with the bulk quasiparticle gap E_{qp}. This gap, also called minigap, facilitates experimental detection of the pristine TS state and MFs at experimentally accessible temperatures T << E_{qp}. Here we show that the linear scaling of minigap with E_{qp} can fail in quasi-1D wires with multiple confinement bands when the applied Zeeman field is greater than or equal to about half of the confinement-induced bandgap. TS states in such wires have an approximate chi…
We prove an index theorem for the existence of Majorana zero modes in a semiconducting thin film with a sizable spin-orbit coupling when it is adjacent to an s-wave superconductor. The theorem, which is analogous to the Jackiw-Rebbi index theorem for the zero modes in mass domain walls in one-dimensional Dirac theory, applies to vortices with odd flux quantum in a semiconducting film in which s-wave superconductivity and a Zeeman splitting are induced by proximity effect. The momentum-space construction of the zero-mode solution presented here is complementary to the approximate real-space sol…
With the recent achievement of extremely high-quality epitaxial interfaces between InAs nanowires and superconducting Al shells with strong superconductor-semiconductor tunnel coupling, a new regime of proximity-induced superconductivity in semiconductors can be explored where the induced gap may be similar in value to the bulk Al gap (large gap) with negligible subgap conductance (hard gap). We propose several experimentally relevant consequences of this large-gap strong-coupling regime for tunneling experiments, and we comment on the prospects of this regime for topological superconductivity…
We address an outstanding problem that represents a critical roadblock in the development of the Majorana-based topological qubit using semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures: the quantitative characterization of disorder effects generated by the unintentional presence of charge impurities within the hybrid device. Given that disorder can have far-reaching consequences for the Majorana physics, but is intrinsically difficult to probe experimentally in a hybrid structure, providing a quantitative theoretical description of disorder effects becomes essential. To accomplish this task, we …
We study multiband semiconducting nanowires proximity-coupled with an s-wave superconductor and calculate the topological phase diagram as a function of the chemical potential and magnetic field. The non-trivial topological state corresponds to a superconducting phase supporting an odd number of pairs of Majorana modes localized at the ends of the wire, whereas the non-topological state corresponds to a superconducting phase with no Majoranas or with an even number of pairs of Majorana modes. Our key finding is that multiband occupancy not only lifts the stringent constraint of one-dimensional…
Majorana fermions are particles identical to their own antiparticles. They have been theoretically predicted to exist in topological superconductors. We report electrical measurements on InSb nanowires contacted with one normal (Au) and one superconducting electrode (NbTiN). Gate voltages vary electron density and define a tunnel barrier between normal and superconducting contacts. In the presence of magnetic fields of order 100 mT we observe bound, mid-gap states at zero bias voltage. These bound states remain fixed to zero bias even when magnetic fields and gate voltages are changed over con…
Conductance at zero source-drain voltage bias in InSb nanowire/NbTiN superconductor devices exhibits peaks that are close to a quantized value of $2e^2/h$. The nearly quantized resonances evolve in the tunnel barrier strength, magnetic field and magnetic field orientation in a way consistent with Majorana zero modes. Our devices feature two tunnel probes on both ends of the nanowire separated by a 400 nm nanowire segment covered by the superconductor. We only find nearly quantized zero bias peaks localized to one end of the nanowire, while conductance dips are observed for the same parameters …
This paper presents a coupled channel model for transport in 2D semiconductor Majorana nanowires coupled to normal leads. When the nanowire hosts a zero mode, conspicuous signatures on the linear conductance are predicted. An effective model in second quantization allowing a fully analytical solution is used to clarify the physics. We also discuss the nonlinear current response ($dI/dV$)
