We present a sample of 68 low-z MgII low-ionization broad absorption-line (loBAL) quasars. The sample is uniformly selected from the SDSS5 according to the following criteria: (1) 0.4<z<0.8, (2) median S/N>7, and (3) MgII absorption-line width > 1600 \kms. The last criterion is a trade-off between the completeness and consistency with respect to the canonical definition of BAL quasars that have the `balnicity index' BI>0 in CIV BAL. We adopted such a criterion to ensure that ~90% of our sample are classical BAL quasars and the completeness is ~80%, based on extensive tests using high-z quasar samples with measurements of both CIV and MgII BALs. We found (1) MgII BAL is more frequently detected in quasars with narrower Hbeta emission-line, weaker [OIII] emission-line, stronger optical FeII multiplets and higher luminosity. In term of fundamental physical parameters of a black hole accretion system, loBAL fraction is significantly higher in quasars with a higher Eddington ratio than those with a lower Eddington ratio. The fraction is not dependent on the black hole mass in the range concerned. The overall fraction distribution is broad, suggesting a large range of covering factor of the absorption material. (2) [OIII]-weak loBAL quasars averagely show undetected [NeV] emission line and a very small line ratio of [NeV] to [OIII]. However, the line ratio in non-BAL quasars, which is much larger than that in [OIII]-weak loBAL quasars, is independent of the strength of the [OIII] line. (3) loBAL and non-loBAL quasars have similar colors in near-infrared to optical band but different colors in ultraviolet. (4) Quasars with MgII absorption lines of intermediate width are indistinguishable from the non-loBAL quasars in optical emission line properties but their colors are similar to loBAL quasars, redder than non-BAL quasars. We also discuss the implication of these results.
We present a catalog of intervening MgII quasar absorption-line systems in the redshift interval 0.36 <= z <= 2.28. The catalog was built from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Four (SDSS DR4) quasar spectra. Currently, the catalog contains > 17,000 measured MgII doublets. We also present data on the ~44,600 quasar spectra which were searched to construct the catalog, including redshift and magnitude information, continuum-normalized spectra, and corresponding arrays of redshift-dependent minimum rest equivalent widths detectable at our confidence threshold. The catalog is available on the…
We report a correlation between velocity offset (beta = v/c) of strong Mg II absorption systems and the bolometric luminosity (L_bol) of quasars in SDSS-DR7. We find that, beta shows a power law increase with L_bol, with a slope (~ 1/4). We find that such a relation of beta with L_bol is expected for outflows driven by scattering of black hole radiation by dust grains, and which are launched from the innermost dust survival radius. Our results indicate that a significant fraction of the strong MgII absorbers, in the range of beta = (0--0.4) may be associated with the quasars themselves.
We have identified 469 MgII doublet systems having W_r >= 0.02 Å in 252 Keck/HIRES and UVES/VLT quasar spectra over the redshift range 0.1 < z < 2.6. Using the largest sample yet of 188 weak MgII systems (0.02 Å <= W_r < 0.3 Å), we calculate their absorber redshift path density, dN/dz. We find clear evidence of evolution, with dN/dz peaking at z ~ 1.2, and that the product of the absorber number density and cross section decreases linearly with increasing redshift; weak MgII absorbers seem to vanish above z ~ 2.7. If the absorbers are ionized by the UV background, we estimate number densities …
A few percent of quasars show strong associated MgII absorption, with velocities (v_off) lying within a few thousand km/s from the quasar systemic redshift. These associated absorption line systems (AALs) are usually interpreted as absorbers that are either intrinsic to the quasar and its host, or arising from external galaxies clustering around the quasar. Using composite spectra of ~1,800 MgII AAL quasars selected from SDSS DR7 at 0.4<~ z<~2, we show that quasars with AALs with v_off<1500 km/s have a prominent excess in [OII]3727 emission (detected at >7sigma) at rest to the quasar host, com…
The broad MgII doublet has been much studied in connection with its potentially important role as a virial estimator of black hole mass in high redshift quasars. An important task is therefore identification of any line components likely related to broadening by non-virial motions. High s/n median composite spectra (binned in the "4D eigenvector 1" context of Sulentic et al. 2007) were constructed for the brightest 680 SDSS DR7 quasars in the 0.4 < z < 0.75 range where both MgII 2800 and Hbeta are recorded in the same spectra. Composite spectra representing 90% of the quasars confirm previous …
We present the first attempt at measuring the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the large scale cross-correlation between the magnesium-II doublet (MgII) flux transmission field and the position of quasar and galaxy tracers. The MgII flux transmission continuous field at $0.3 < z < 1.6$ is measured from 500,589 quasar spectra obtained in the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and the extended BOSS (eBOSS). The position of 246,697 quasar tracers and 1,346,776 galaxy tracers are extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) I, II, BOSS and eBOSS catalogs. In addition to …
We test whether the Tinker & Chen model of MgII absorption due to the gaseous halo around a galaxy can reproduce absorption in quasar pairs (both lensed and physical) and lensed triples and quads from the literature. These quasars exhibit absorption from a total of 38 MgII systems spanning z=0.043 - 2.066 with mean redshift <z>=1.099 and weighted mean rest-frame equivalent width of 0.87 Ang. Using the Tinker & Chen model to generate simulated sight-lines, we marginalize the unknown parameters of the absorbing galaxies: dark matter halo mass, impact parameter, and azimuthal angle on the sky. We…
We report the first comparative study of strong MgII absorbers seen towards radio-loud quasars of core-dominated (CDQs) and lobe-dominated (LDQs) types and normal QSOs. The MgII associated absorption systems having a velocity offset v < 5000km/s from the systemic velocity of the background quasar were also excluded. Existing spectroscopic data for redshift-matched sightlines of 3975 CDQs and 1583 LDQs, covering a emission redshift range 0.39-4.87, were analysed and 864 strong MgII absorbers were found, covering the redshift range 0.45-2.17. The conclusions reached using this well-defined large…
There is nearly a factor of four difference in the number density of intervening MgII absorbers as determined from gamma-ray burst (GRB) and quasar lines of sight. We use a Monte-Carlo simulation to test if a dust extinction bias can account for this discrepancy. We apply an empirically determined relationship between dust column density and MgII rest equivalent width to simulated quasar sight-lines and model the underlying number of quasars that must be present to explain the published magnitude distribution of SDSS quasars. We find that an input MgII number density dn/dz of 0.273 +- 0.002 ov…
Background quasars are potentially sensitive probes of galactic outflows provided that one can determine the origin of the absorbing material since both gaseous disks and strong bipolar outflows can contribute to the absorption cross-section. Using a dozen quasars passing near spectroscopically identified galaxies at $z\sim0.1$, we find that the azimuthal orientation of the quasar sight-lines with strong MgII absorption (with EW>0.3 Å) is bi-modal: about half the MgII sight-lines are aligned with the major axis and the other half are within 30deg. of the minor axis, showing that bipolar outflo…
We have performed an analysis of over 34,000 MgII doublets at 0.36 < z < 2.29 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data-Release 7 quasar spectra; the catalog, advanced data products, and tools for analysis are publicly available. The catalog was divided into 14 small redshift bins with roughly 2500 doublets in each, and from Monte-Carlo simulations, we estimate 50% completeness at rest equivalent width W_r ~ 0.8 Angstrom. The equivalent-width frequency distribution is described well by an exponential model at all redshifts, and the distribution becomes flatter with increasing redshift, i.e., the…
We investigate the extent and the properties of the MgII cool, low-density absorbing gas located in the halo and in the circum-galactic environment of quasars, using a sample of 31 projected quasar pairs with impact parameter pd<200kpc in the redshift range 0.5<z<1.6. In the transverse direction, we detect 18 MgII absorbers associated with the foreground quasars, while no absorption system originated by the gas surrounding the quasar itself is found along the line-of-sight. This suggests that the quasar emission induces an anisotropy in the absorbing gas distribution. Our observations indicate…
We report 4 new detections of 21-cm absorption from a systematic search of 21-cm absorption in a sample of 17 strong (Wr(MgII 2796)>1A) intervening MgII absorbers at 0.5<z<1.5. We also present 20-cm milliarcsecond scale maps of 40 quasars having 42 intervening strong MgII absorbers for which we have searched for 21-cm absorption. Combining 21-cm absorption measurements for 50 strong MgII systems from our surveys with the measurements from literature, we obtain a sample of 85 strong MgII absorbers at 0.5<z<1 and 1.1<z<1.5. We present detailed analysis of this sample, taking into account the eff…
We review the basic techniques for extracting information about quasar structure and kinematics from the broad emission lines in quasars. We consider which lines can most effectively serve as virial estimators of black hole mass. At low redshift the Balmer lines, particularly broad H beta, are the lines of choice. For redshifts greater than 0.7 - 0.8 one can follow H beta into the IR windows or find an H beta surrogate. We explain why UV CIV 1549 is not a safe virial estimator and how MgII 2800 serves as the best virial surrogate for H beta up to the highest redshift quasar known at z ~ 7. We s…
[Abridged] Broad MgII 2800 and Hbeta lines have emerged as the most reliable virial estimators of black hole mass in quasars. Which is more reliable? Comparison of MgII 2800 and Hbeta profile measures in the same sources and especially FWHM measures that provide the virial broadening estimator. Identification of 680 bright Sloan Digital Sky Survey DataRelease 7 quasars with spectra showing both MgII 2800 and Hbeta lines, at redshift 0.4 < z < 0.75. The s/n of these spectra are high enough to allow binning in the "four-dimensional (4D) eigenvector 1'' optical plane and construction of high s/n …
We find that the recently reported departure from the Eddington luminosity limit for the highest quasar black hole masses at a given redshift is an artifact due to biases in black hole mass measurements. This sub-Eddington boundary (with non-unity slope) in the quasar mass-luminosity plane was initially reported by Steinhardt & Elvis (2010a) using the FWHM-based black hole mass catalogue of Shen et al. (2008). However, the significance of the boundary is reduced when the FWHM-based mass-scaling relationship is recalibrated following Wang et al. (2009) and using the most updated reverberation m…
We perform an extensive analysis of the Civ line in three large spectroscopic surveys of quasars. Differing approaches for fitting the Civ line can be found in the literature, and we compare the most common methods to highlight the relative systematics associated with each. We develop a line fitting procedure and apply it to the Civ line in spectra from the SDSS, 2QZ and 2SLAQ surveys. Our results are compared with a previous study of the Mgii line in the same sample. Civ tends to be broader than the Mgii line in spectra that have both, and the average ratio between the lines is consistent wit…
Using the properties of SDSS DR7 QSOs catalog from Shen et al., the Baldwin effect, its slope evolution, the underlying drive for a large sample of 35019 QSOs with reliable spectral analysis are investigated. We find that the Baldwin effect exists in this large QSOs sample, which is almost the same in 11 different redshift bins, up to $z\sim 5$. The slope is -0.238 by the BCES (\civ\ EW depends on the continuum), -0.787 by the BCES bisector. For 11 redshift-bins, there is an increasing of the Baldwin effect slope from $z\sim1.5$ to $z\sim2.0$. From $z\sim2.0$ to $z\sim5.0$, the slope change is…
Based on recent results on the frequency of MgII absorption line systems in the "QSO behind RCS clusters" survey (QbC), we analyse the effects of the cluster environment on the sizes of baryonic haloes around galaxies. We use two independent models, i) an empirical halo occupation model which fits current measurements of the clustering and luminosity function of galaxies at low and high redshifts, and ii) the GALFORM semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, which follows the evolution of the galaxy population from first principles, adjusted to match the statistics of low and high redshift gala…
We present MgII-based black hole mass estimates for 27,602 quasars with rest-frame UV spectra available in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Three. This estimation is possible due to the existence of an empirical correlation between the radius of the broad line region and the continuum luminosity at 3000 Angstroms. We regenerate this correlation by applying our measurement method to UV spectra of low-redshift quasars in the HST/IUE databases which have corresponding reverberation mapping estimates of the Hbeta broad line region's radius. Our mass estimation method uses the line dispers…
We present a catalogue of MgII absorption systems obtained from high resolution UVES/VLT data of 77 QSOs in the redshift range 0.6 < z < 2.0, and down to an equivalent width W_0 > 0.1 Å. The statistical properties of our sample are found to be in agreement with those from previous work in the literature. However, we point out that the previously observed increase with redshift of dN/dz for weak absorbers, pertains exclusively to very weak absorbers with W_0 < 0.1 Å. Instead, dN/dz for absorbers with W_0 in the range 0.1-0.3 Åactually decreases with redshift, similarly to the case of strong abs…
We present a measurement of the cross-correlation of MgII absorption and massive galaxies, using the DR11 main galaxy sample of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey of SDSS-III (CMASS galaxies), and the DR7 quasar spectra of SDSS-II. The cross-correlation is measured by stacking quasar absorption spectra shifted to the redshift of galaxies that are within a certain impact parameter bin of the quasar, after dividing by a quasar continuum model. This results in an average MgII equivalent width as a function of impact parameter from a galaxy, ranging from 50 kpc to more than 10 Mpc in prop…
We report the serendipitous discovery of a previously unknown quasar at 10.5" from Q2225-403 (z=2.410). The observation of the broad emission line of MgII_2798 and of the surrounding FeII multiplets indicates that the companion quasar is at z=0.932. The spectrum of Q2225-403 shows a number of absorption lines, the most noteworthy is the MgII line at the same redshift of the companion, suggesting that we are probing the gas within the halo ~80 kpc from the closer quasar. From high resolution NIR images we were able to resolve the host galaxies of the two quasars. Basing on the known surface den…
To study environmental effects on the circumgalactic medium (CGM), we use the samples of redMaPPer galaxy clusters, background quasars and cluster galaxies from the SDSS. With ~82 000 quasar spectra, we detect 197 MgII absorbers in and around the clusters. The detection rate per quasar is 2.7$\pm$0.7 times higher inside the clusters than outside the clusters, indicating that MgII absorbers are relatively abundant in clusters. However, when considering the galaxy number density, the absorber-to-galaxy ratio is rather low inside the clusters. If we assume that MgII absorbers are mainly contribut…
(Abridged) Star formation-driven outflows are a critical phenomenon in theoretical treatments of galaxy evolution, despite the limited ability of observations to trace them across cosmological timescales. If the strongest MgII absorption-line systems detected in the spectra of background quasars arise in such outflows, "ultra-strong" MgII (USMgII) absorbers would identify significant numbers of galactic winds over a huge baseline in cosmic time, in a manner independent of the luminous properties of the galaxy. To this end, we present the first detailed imaging and spectroscopic study of the fi…
Single-epoch virial black hole (BH) mass estimators utilizing broad emission lines have been routinely applied to high-redshift quasars to estimate their BH masses. Depending on the redshift, different line estimators (Halpha, Hbeta, MgII, CIV) are often used with optical/near-infrared spectroscopy. Here we use a homogeneous sample of 60 intermediate-redshift (z~1.5-2.2) SDSS quasars with optical and near-infrared spectra covering CIV through Halpha to investigate the consistency between different line estimators. We critically compare restframe UV line estimators (CIV, CIII], and MgII) with o…
We present initial results from the first systematic survey for MgII quasar absorption lines at z > 2.5. Using infrared spectra of 46 high-redshift quasars, we discovered 111 MgII systems over a path covering 1.9 < z < 6.3. Five systems have z > 5, with a maximum of z = 5.33 - the most distant MgII system now known. The comoving MgII line density for weaker systems (Wr < 1.0A) is statistically consistent with no evolution from z = 0.4 to z = 5.5, while that for stronger systems increases three-fold until z \sim 3 before declining again towards higher redshifts. The equivalent width distributio…
We present HST-COS spectra of ten quasars located behind M31, selected to investigate the properties of gas associated with its extended disk and high velocity clouds (HVCs). The sightlines have impact parameters ranging between b= 13 kpc and 112 kpc. No absorption is detected in the four sightlines beyond b=57 kpc. Of the six remaining sightlines, all of which lie at b<32 kpc and within the N(HI)= 2E18 cm^{-2} boundary of the HI disk of M31, we detect low-ionization absorption at M31 velocities along four of them (three of which include MgII absorption). We also detect MgII absorption from an…
Sixty percent of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) reveal strong MgII absorbing systems, which is a factor of ~2 times the rate seen along lines-of-sight to quasars. The discrepancy in the covering factor is most likely to be the result of either quasars being obscured due to dust, or the consequence of many GRBs being strongly gravitationally lensed. We analyze observations of GRBs that show strong foreground MgII absorption. We Monte-Carlo the distances between foreground galaxies in the HUDF and lines of sight distributed randomly within a radius derived from the covering factor, and find that galaxi…
We report the first measurements of MgII absorption systems associated with spectroscopically confirmed z~0.1 star-forming galaxies at projected distances of D<6kpc. We demonstrate the data are consistent with the well known anti-correlation between rest-frame MgII equivalent width, Wr(2796), and impact parameter, D, represented by a single log-linear relation derived by Nielsen et al. (MAGIICAT) that converges to ~2A at D=0kpc. Incorporating MAGIICAT, we find that the halo gas covering fraction is unity below D~25kpc. We also report that our D<6kpc absorbers are consistent with the Wr(2796) d…
We present a sample of 46 [OIII]-emitting galaxies at z<0.8 detected in the fibre spectra of quasars from the SDSS-DR7 through an automatic search procedure. We also detect [OII] and Hb emission lines from most of these galaxies in the SDSS spectra. We study both the emission and absorption properties of a sub-sample of 17 galaxies in the redshift range z=0.4-0.7, where MgII lines are covered by the SDSS spectra. The measured lower-limits on the star-formation rates of these galaxies are in the range 0.2-20 M_sun/yr. The emission line luminosities and (O/H) metallicities from R23 measured in t…
We examine how much information measured broad-line widths add to virial BH mass estimates for flux limited samples of quasars. We do this by comparing the BH mass estimates to those derived by randomly reassigning the quasar broad-line widths to different objects and re-calculating the BH mass. For 9000 BH masses derived from the H_beta line we find that the distributions of original and randomized BH masses in the M_BH-redshift plane and the M_BH-luminosity plane are formally identical. A 2D KS test does not find a difference at >90% confidence. For the MgII line (32000 quasars) we do find v…
We present joint constraints on the distribution of MgII absorption around galaxies, by combining the MgII absorption seen in stacked background galaxy spectra and the distribution of host galaxies of strong MgII systems from the spectra of background quasars. We present a suite of models that predict, the dependence of MgII absorption on a galaxy's apparent inclination, impact parameter(b) and azimuthal angle. The variations in the absorption strength with azimuthal angles provide much stronger constraints on the intrinsic geometry of the MgII absorption than the dependence on the galaxy's in…
We present the analysis of optical and near-infrared spectra of the only four $z>6.5$ quasars known to date, discovered in the UKIDSS-LAS and VISTA-VIKING surveys. Our data-set consists of new VLT/X-Shooter and Magellan/FIRE observations. These are the best optical/NIR spectroscopic data that are likely to be obtained for the $z>6.5$ sample using current $6$ - $10$ m facilities. We estimate the black hole mass, the Eddington ratio, and the SiIV/CIV, CIII]/CIV, and FeII/MgII emission-line flux ratios. We perform spectral modeling using a procedure that allows us to derive a probability distribu…
We investigate the dependence of residual rotation measure (RRM) on intervening absorption systems at cosmic distances by using a large sample of 539 SDSS quasars in conjunction with the available rotation measure catalog at around 21cm wavelength. We found an excess extragalactic contribution in standard deviation of observed RRM of about 8.11+/-4.83 Rad/m^2 in our sample with intervening MgII absorber as compare to the sample without MgII absorber. Our results suggest that intervening absorbers could contribute to the enhancement of RRM at around 21cm wavelength, as was found earlier for RM …
We obtained ESI/Keck rotation curves of 10 MgII absorption selected galaxies (0.3 < z < 1.0) for which we have WFPC-2/HST images and high resolution HIRES/Keck and UVES/VLT quasar spectra of the MgII absorption profiles. We perform a kinematic comparison of these galaxies and their associated halo MgII absorption. For all 10 galaxies, the majority of the absorption velocities lie in the range of the observed galaxy rotation velocities. In 7/10 cases, the absorption velocities reside fully to one side of the galaxy systemic velocity and usually align with one arm of the rotation curve. In all c…
We report the discovery and confirmation of eight new two-image lensed quasars by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar Lens Search. The lenses are SDSSJ0904+1512 (image separation θ=1"13, source redshift z_s=1.826), SDSSJ1054+2733 (θ=1"27, z_s=1.452), SDSSJ1055+4628 (θ=1"15, z_s=1.249), SDSSJ1131+1915 (θ=1"46, z_s=2.915), SDSSJ1304+2001 (θ=1"87, z_s=2.175), SDSSJ1349+1227 (θ=3"00, z_s=1.722), SDSSJ1455+1447 (θ=1"73, z_s=1.424), and SDSSJ1620+1203 (θ=2"77, z_s=1.158). Three of them, SDSSJ1055+4628, SDSSJ1455+1447, and SDSSJ1620+1203, satisfy the criteria for constructing our statistical s…
We have conducted a pilot survey for z>3.5 quasars by combining the FIRST radio survey with the SDSS. While SDSS already targets FIRST sources for spectroscopy as quasar candidates, our survey includes fainter quasars and greatly improves the discovery rate by using strict astrometric criteria for matching the radio and optical positions. Our method allows for selection of high-redshift quasars with less color bias than with optical selection, as using radio selection essentially eliminates stellar contamination. We report the results of spectroscopy for 45 candidates, including 29 quasars in …
For the first time spectroscopic galaxy redshift surveys are reaching the scales where galaxies can be studied together with the nearest quasars. This gives an opportunity to study the dependence between the activity of a quasar and its environment in a more extensive way than before. We study the spatial distribution of galaxies and groups of galaxies in the environments of low redshift quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our aim is to understand how the nearby quasars are embedded in the local and global density field of galaxies and how the environment affects quasar activity. W…
We present the final statistical sample of lensed quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar Lens Search (SQLS). The well-defined statistical lens sample consists of 26 lensed quasars brighter than i=19.1 and in the redshift range of 0.6<z<2.2 selected from 50,836 spectroscopically confirmed quasars in the SDSS Data Release 7 (DR7), where we restrict the image separation range to 1"<θ<20" and the i-band magnitude differences in two image lenses to be smaller than 1.25 mag. The SDSS DR7 quasar catalog also contains 36 additional lenses identified with various techniques. In additio…
We present a compilation of properties of the 105,783 quasars in the SDSS Data Release 7 (DR7) quasar catalog. In this value-added product, we compile continuum and emission line measurements around the Halpha, Hbeta, MgII and CIV regions, as well as other quantities such as radio properties, broad absorption line quasar (BALQSO) flags, and disk emitters. We also compile virial black hole mass estimates based on various calibrations. For the fiducial virial mass estimates we use the Vestergaard & Peterson (VP06) calibrations for Hbeta and CIV, and our own calibration for MgII which matches the…
We report the discovery of four doubly imaged quasar lenses. All the four systems are selected as lensed quasar candidates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. We confirm their lensing hypothesis with additional imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations. The discovered lenses are SDSS J0743+2457 with the source redshift z_s=2.165, the lens redshift z_l=0.381, and the image separation theta=1.034", SDSS J1128+2402 with z_s=1.608 and theta=0.844", SDSS J1405+0959 with z_s=1.810, z_l~0.66, and theta=1.978", and SDSS J1515+1511 with z_s=2.054, z_l=0.742, and theta=1.989". It is difficult…
We report the discovery of a unique gravitational lens system, SDSSJ2222+2745, producing five spectroscopically confirmed images of a z_s=2.82 quasar lensed by a foreground galaxy cluster at z_l=0.49. We also present photometric and spectroscopic evidence for a sixth lensed image of the same quasar. The maximum separation between the quasar images is 15.1". Both the large image separations and the high image multiplicity of the lensed quasar are in themselves exceptionally rare, and observing the combination of these two factors is an exceptionally unlikely occurrence in present datasets. This…
We present a new approach to analysing the dependence of quasar variability on rest-frame wavelengths. We exploited the spectral archive of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to create a sample of more than 9000 quasars in the Stripe 82. The quasar catalogue was matched with the Light Motion Curve Catalogue for SDSS Stripe 82 and individual first-order structure functions were computed. The structure functions are used to create a variability indicator that is related to the same intrinsic timescales for all quasars (1 to 2 yr in the rest frame). We study the variability ratios for adjacent S…
Flat space models with multiply connected topology, which have compact dimensions, are tested against the distribution of high-redshift ($z \geq 4$) quasars of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). When the compact dimensions are smaller in size than the observed universe, topological lensing occurs, in which multiple images of single objects (ghost images) are observed. We improve on the recently introduced method to identify ghost images by means of four-point statistics. Our method is valid for any of the 17 multiply connected flat models, including nontoroial ones that are compactified by s…
We have investigated the ensemble regularities of the equivalent widths (EWs) of MgII 2800 emission line of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), using a uniformly selected sample of 2092 Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars at 0.45 <= z <= 0.8 in the spectroscopic data set of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Fourth Data Release. We find a strong correlation between the EW of MgII and the AGN Eddington ratio (L/L_Edd): EW(MgII) \propto (L/L_Edd)^{-0.4}. Furthermore, for AGNs with the same L/L_Edd, their EWs of MgII show no correlation with luminosity, black hole mass or line width, and the MgII line luminosity is …
We report the results of near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 37 quasars in the redshift range $6.3< z\le7.64$, including 32 quasars at $z>6.5$, forming the largest quasar near-infrared spectral sample at this redshift. The spectra, taken with Keck, Gemini, VLT, and Magellan, allow investigations of central black hole mass and quasar rest-frame ultraviolet spectral properties. The black hole masses derived from the MgII emission lines are in the range $(0.3-3.6)\times10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$, which requires massive seed black holes with masses $\gtrsim10^{3-4}\,M_{\odot}$, assuming Eddington …
Effects of heterogeneous data sets and time-lag measurement techniques on cosmological parameter constraints from MgII and CIV reverberation-mapped quasar data
Neutral Helium multiplets, HeI*3189,3889,10830 are very useful diagnostics to the geometry and physical conditions of the absorbing gas in quasars. So far only a handful of HeI* detections have been reported. Using a newly developed method, we detected HeI*3889 absorption line in 101 sources of a well-defined sample of 285 MgII BAL quasars selected from the SDSS DR5. This has increased the number of HeI* BAL quasars by more than one order of magnitude. We further detected HeI*3189 in 50% (52/101) quasars in the sample. The detection fraction of HeI* BALs in MgII BAL quasars is about 35% as a w…
We report on the discovery of a Type 1 quasar, SDSS 0956+5128, with a surprising combination of extreme velocity offsets. SDSS 0956+5128 is a broad-lined quasar exhibiting emission lines at three substantially different redshifts: a systemic redshift of z ~ 0.714 based on narrow emission lines, a broad MgII emission line centered 1200 km/s bluer than the systemic velocity, at z ~ 0.707, and broad Hαand Hβemission lines centered at z ~ 0.690. The Balmer line peaks are 4100 km/s bluer than the systemic redshift. There are no previously known objects with such an extreme difference between broad …
We present new Gemini/GMOS optical spectroscopy of 16 extreme variability quasars (EVQs) that dimmed by more than 1.5 mag in the $g$ band between the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES) epochs (separated by a few years in the quasar rest frame). The quasar sample covers a redshift range of $0.5 < z < 2.1$. Nearly half of these EVQs brightened significantly (by more than 0.5 mag in the $g$ band) in a few years after reaching their previous faintest state, and some EVQs showed rapid (non-blazar) variations of greater than 1-2 mag on timescales of only months. Leverag…
We identified a large sample of radio quasars, including those with complex radio morphology, from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Faint Images of Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST). Using this sample, we inspect previous radio quasar samples for selection effects resulting from complex radio morphologies and adopting positional coincidence between radio and optical sources alone. We find that 13.0% and 8.1% radio quasars do not show a radio core within 1.2 and 2 arcsecs of their optical position, and thus are missed in such samples. Radio flux is under-estimated by a factor of more th…
We describe the MgII Absorber-Galaxy Catalog, MAGIICAT, a compilation of 182 spectroscopically identified intermediate redshift (0.07 < z < 1.1) galaxies with measurements of MgII 2796, 2803 absorption from their circumgalactic medium within projected distances of 200 kpc from background quasars. In this work, we present "isolated" galaxies, which are defined as having no spectroscopically identified galaxy within a projected distance of 100 kpc and a line of sight velocity separation of 500 km/s. We standardized all galaxy properties to the Lambda CDM cosmology and galaxy luminosities, absolu…
We have compiled a sample of 14 of the optically brightest radio-quiet quasars ($m_{i}$~$\le$~17.5 and $z$~$\ge$~1.9) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 quasar catalog that have C IV mini-BALs present in their spectra. X-ray data for 12 of the objects were obtained via a Chandra snapshot survey using ACIS-S, while data for the other two quasars were obtained from archival XMM-Newton observations. Joint X-ray spectral analysis shows the mini-BAL quasars have a similar average power-law photon index ($Γ\approx1.9$) and level of intrinsic absorption ($N_H \lesssim 8\times 10^{21} \ {\…
We present the results of a survey for CaII 3934,3969 absorption-line systems culled from ~ 95,000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 and Data Release 9 quasar spectra. With 435 doublets identified in the catalog, this list is the largest CaII catalog compiled to date, spanning redshifts z < 1.34, which corresponds to the most recent ~ 8.9 Gyrs of the history of the Universe. We derive statistics on the CaII rest equivalent width distribution (REW) and incidence (number density per unit redshift). We find that the lambda3934 REW distribution cannot be described by a single exponent…
The latest result in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search (SQLS) has set the first cosmological constraints on negative-mass compact objects and Ellis wormholes. There are no multiple images lensed by the above two exotic objects for $\sim 50000$ distant quasars in the SQLS data. Therefore, an upper bound is put on the cosmic abundances of these lenses. The number density of negative mass compact objects is $n<10^{-8} (10^{-4}) h^3 {\rm Mpc}^{-3}$ at the mass scale $|M| > 10^{15} (10^{12}) M_\odot$, which corresponds to the cosmological density parameter $|Ω| < 10^{-4}$ at the galax…
