We have investigated the ensemble regularities of the equivalent widths (EWs) of MgII 2800 emission line of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), using a uniformly selected sample of 2092 Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars at 0.45 <= z <= 0.8 in the spectroscopic data set of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Fourth Data Release. We find a strong correlation between the EW of MgII and the AGN Eddington ratio (L/L_Edd): EW(MgII) \propto (L/L_Edd)^{-0.4}. Furthermore, for AGNs with the same L/L_Edd, their EWs of MgII show no correlation with luminosity, black hole mass or line width, and the MgII line luminosity is proportional to continuum luminosity, as expected by photoionization theory. Our result shows that MgII EW is not dependent on luminosity, but is solely governed by L/L_Edd.
The FeII/MgII line flux ratio has been used as an indicator of the Fe/Mg abundance ratio in the broad line region (BLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). On the basis of archival rest-frame UV spectra obtained via the Hubble Space Telescope and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we investigate the FeII/MgII ratios of type 1 AGNs at z < 2. Over wide dynamic ranges of AGN properties (i.e., black hole mass, AGN luminosity, and Eddington ratio), we confirm that the FeII/MgII ratio strongly correlates with Eddington ratio but not with black hole mass, AGN luminosity, or redshift. Our results suggest tha…
We use optical and near-infrared spectroscopy to observe rest-UV emission lines and estimate the black hole mass of WISEA J224607.56-052634.9 (W2246-0526) at z = 4.601, the most luminous hot dust-obscured galaxy yet discovered by WISE. From the broad component of the MgII-2799A emission line, we measure a black hole mass of log (M_BH/M_sun) = 9.6 +- 0.4. The broad CIV-1549A line is asymmetric and significantly blue-shifted. The derived M_BH from the blueshift-corrected broad CIV line width agrees with the MgII result. From direct measurement using a well-sampled SED, the bolometric luminosity …
We use 62185 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR5 sample to explore the quasar mass-luminosity plane view of virial mass estimation. Previous work shows deviations of ~0.4 dex between virial and reverberation masses. The decline in quasar number density for the highest Eddington ratio quasars at each redshift provides an upper bound of between 0.13 and 0.29 dex for virial mass estimate statistical uncertainties. Across different redshift bins, the maximum possible MgII mass uncertainties average 0.15 dex, while Hβ uncertainties average 0.21 dex and CIV uncertainties average 0.2…
We investigate the relationship between the MgII $\lambda2798$ emission-line and the 3000 Å continuum variations using a sample of 68 intermediate-redshift ($z\sim$ 0.65$-$1.50) broad-line quasars spanning a bolometric luminosity range of 44.49 erg s$^{-1} \leq \rm{log}$$L_{\rm{bol}} \leq 46.31$ erg s$^{-1}$ (Eddington ratio from $\sim$ 0.026 to 0.862). This sample is constructed from SDSS-DR7Q and BOSS-DR12Q, each with at least 2 spectroscopic epochs in SDSS-I/II/III surveys. Additionally, we adopt the following signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) selection criteria: a) for MgII and the 3000 Å contin…
We present new near-infrared (IR) observations of the H$β \lambda4861$ and MgII $\lambda2798$ lines for 32 luminous quasars with $3.2<z<3.9$ using the Palomar Hale 200 inch telescope and the Large Binocular Telescope. We find that the MgII Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) is well correlated with the H$β$ FWHM, confirming itself as a good substitute for the H$β$ FWHM in the black hole mass estimates. The continuum luminosity at 5100 Å well correlates with the continuum luminosity at 3000 Å and the broad emission line luminosities (H$β$ and MgII). With simultaneous near-IR spectroscopy of the H…
We perform an analysis of the properties of radio-loud (RL) and radio-quiet (RQ) quasars with MgII broad emission line (i-band magnitude $\leq 19.1$ and z $\leq 1.9$), selected from the parent sample of SDSS DR7 catalogue. For sources with full-width half maxima (FWHM) greater than \mbox{15,000 km s$^{-1}$} (very broad line sample; VBL) we find the radio loud fraction (RLF) to be about 40\%. To further investigate this result we compare the bolometric luminosity, optical continuum luminosity, black hole (BH) mass and Eddington ratios of our VBL sample of RL and RQ quasars. Our analysis shows t…
We report the results of near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 37 quasars in the redshift range $6.3< z\le7.64$, including 32 quasars at $z>6.5$, forming the largest quasar near-infrared spectral sample at this redshift. The spectra, taken with Keck, Gemini, VLT, and Magellan, allow investigations of central black hole mass and quasar rest-frame ultraviolet spectral properties. The black hole masses derived from the MgII emission lines are in the range $(0.3-3.6)\times10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$, which requires massive seed black holes with masses $\gtrsim10^{3-4}\,M_{\odot}$, assuming Eddington …
We present the monitoring of the AGN continuum and MgII broad line emission for the quasar HE 0413-4031 ($z=1.38$) based on the six-year monitoring by the South African Large Telescope (SALT). We managed to estimate a time-delay of $302.6^{+28.7}_{-33.1}$ days in the rest frame of the source using seven different methods: interpolated cross-correlation function (ICCF), discrete correlation function (DCF), $z$-transformed DCF, JAVELIN, two estimators of data regularity (Von Neumann, Bartels), and $χ^2$ method. This time-delay is below the value expected from the standard radius-luminosity relat…
Very few low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) QSOs have been found at high redshifts to date. One high-redshift LoBAL QSO, J0122+1216, was recently discovered at the Lijiang 2.4-m Telescope with an initial redshift determination of 4.76. Aiming to investigate its physical properties, we carried out follow-up observations in the optical and near-IR spectroscopy. Near-IR spectra from UKIRT and P200 confirms that it is a LoBAL, with a new redshift determination of $4.82\pm0.01$ based on the \mgii~ emission-line. The new \mgii~ redshift determination reveals strong blueshifts and asymmetry…
We present the first near-IR spectroscopy and joint analyses of multi-wavelength observations for SDSS J082747.14+425241.1, a dust-reddened, weak broad emission-line quasar (WLQ) undergoing a remarkable broad absorption line (BAL) transformation. The systemic redshift is more precisely measured to be $z=2.070\pm0.001$ using H$β$ compared to $z=2.040\pm0.003$ using \mgii\ from the literature, signifying an extreme \mgii\ blueshift of $2140\pm530$ \kms\ relative to H$β$. Using the H$β$-based single-epoch scaling relation with a systematic uncertainty of 0.3 dex, its black hole (BH) mass and Eddi…
We use 62185 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 sample to explore the relationship between black hole mass and luminosity. Black hole masses were estimated based on the widths of their Hβ, MgII and CIV lines and adjacent continuum luminosities using standard virial mass estimate scaling laws. We find that, over the range 0.2 < z < 4.0, the most luminous low-mass quasars are at their Eddington luminosity, but the most luminous high-mass quasars in each redshift bin fall short of their Eddington luminosities, with the shortfall of the order of 10 or more at 0.2 < z < 0.6. W…
We investigate the responsiveness of the 2798AA Mg II broad emission line in AGN on timescales of several years. Our study is based on a sample of extremely variable AGN as well as a broad population sample. The observed response of the line in previous studies has been mixed. By focussing on extreme variability ($|Δg|>$ 1) we find that Mg II clearly does respond to the continuum. However, the degree of responsiveness varies strikingly from one object to another; we see cases of Mg II changing by as much as the continuum, more than the continuum, or very little at all. In 74% of the highly var…
We use the multi-epoch spectra of 362 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project to investigate the dependence of the blueshift of CIV relative to MgII on quasar properties. We confirm that high-blueshift sources tend to have low CIV equivalent widths (EWs), and that the low-EW sources span a range of blueshift. Other high-ionization lines, such as HeII, also show similar blueshift properties. The ratio of the line width (measured as both the full-width at half maximum and the velocity dispersion) of CIV to that of MgII increases with blueshift. Quasar variability …
We present deep (9 hours) Gemini-N/GNIRS near-infrared spectroscopic observations of ULAS J1342+0928, a luminous quasar at z=7.54. Various broad emission lines were detected, as well as the underlying continuum and iron forests over the rest-frame wavelength 970-2930A. There is a clear trend that higher-ionization emission lines show larger blueshifts with CIV1549 exhibiting 5510^{+240}_{-110} km s-1 blueshift with respect to the systematic redshift from the far-infrared [CII] 158um emission line. Those high ionization lines have wide profiles with FWHM more than 10000 km s-1. A modest blueshi…
We present near-IR spectroscopy in J- and H-band for a large sample of 243 X-ray selected moderate-luminosity type-1 AGN in the COSMOS, SXDS and E-CDF-S survey fields using the multi-object spectrograph Subaru/FMOS. Our sample covers the redshift range 0.5<z<3.0 and an X-ray luminosity range of $10^{43}\lesssim L_X \lesssim 10^{45}$~erg s$^{-1}$. We provide emission-line properties and derived virial black hole mass estimates, bolometric luminosities and Eddington ratios, based on H$α$ (211), H$β$ (63) and MgII (4). We compare line widths, luminosities and black hole mass estimates from H$α$ a…
We present the discovery of PSO J083.8371+11.8482, a weak emission line quasar with extreme star formation rate at $z=6.3401$. This quasar was selected from Pan-STARRS1, UHS, and unWISE photometric data. Gemini/GNIRS spectroscopy follow-up indicates a MgII-based black hole mass of $M_\mathrm{BH}=\left(2.0^{+0.7}_{-0.4}\right)\times10^9~M_\odot$ and an Eddington ratio of $L_\mathrm{bol}/L_\mathrm{Edd}=0.5^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, in line with actively accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH) at $z\gtrsim6$. HST imaging sets strong constraint on lens-boosting, showing no relevant effect on the apparent e…
We report initial results from a large Gemini program to observe z>~5.7 quasars with GNIRS near-IR spectroscopy. Our sample includes 50 quasars with simultaneous ~0.85-2.5 micron spectra covering the rest-frame ultraviolet and major broad emission lines from Ly-alpha to MgII. We present spectral measurements for these quasars and compare to their lower-redshift counterparts at z=1.5-2.3. We find that when quasar luminosity is matched, there are no significant differences between the rest-UV spectra of z>~5.7 quasars and the low-z comparison sample. High-z quasars have similar continuum and emi…
We present the analysis of a new near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of a recently discovered $z=6.621$ quasar PSO J006+39 in an attempt to explore the early growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). This NIR (rest-frame ultraviolet, UV) spectrum shows blue continuum slope and rich metal emission lines in addition to Ly$α$ line. We utilize the MgII line width and the rest frame luminosity $L_\text{3000Å}$ to find the mass of SMBH ($M_\text{BH}$) to be $\sim 10^8 M_\odot$, making this one of the lowest mass quasars at high redshift. The power-law slope index ($α_λ$) of the continuum emission is $-2.…
We present an observational study of 22 broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) at $3\lesssim z \lesssim5$ based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, aiming to investigate quasar winds and their effects. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the \hb\ and/or \mgii\ broad emission lines (BELs) for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. We found that our BAL QSOs on average do not have a higher Eddington ratio than that from non-BAL QSOs matched in redshift and/or luminosity. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs possessing sub-relativistic B…
We present deep near-infrared spectroscopy of six quasars at 6.1<z<6.7 with VLT/X-Shooter and Gemini-N/GNIRS. Our objects, originally discovered through a wide-field optical survey with the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP), have the lowest luminosities (-25.5< M1450<-23.1 mag) of the z>5.8 quasars with measured black hole masses. From single-epoch mass measurements based on MgII2798, we find a wide range in black hole masses, from M_BH=10^7.6 to 10^9.3 Msun. The Eddington ratios L_bol/L_Edd range from 0.16 to 1.1, but the majority of the HSC quasars are powered by M_B…
We investigate FeII emission in Broad Line Region (BLR) of AGNs by analyzing the FeII(UV), FeII(4570) and MgII emission lines in 884 quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar catalog in a redshift range of 0.727 < z < 0.804. FeII(4570)/FeII(UV) is used to infer the column density of FeII-emitting clouds and explore the excitation mechanism of FeII emission lines. As suggested before in various works, the classical photoionization models fail to account for FeII(4570)/FeII(UV) by a factor of 10, which may suggest anisotropy of UV FeII emission; otherwise, an alternative heating mech…
We present measurements of black hole masses and Eddington ratios for a sample of 38 bright (M$_{1450}$ < -24.4 mag) quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.5, derived from VLT/X-shooter near-IR spectroscopy of their broad CIV and MgII emission lines. The black hole masses (on average M$_{BH}$ ~ 4.6 x 10$^9$ M$_{\odot}$) and accretion rates (with Eddington ratios ranging between 0.1 and 1.0) are broadly consistent with that of similarly luminous 0.3 < z < 2.3 quasars, but there is evidence for a mild increase in the median Eddington ratio going towards z > 6. Combined with deep ALMA observations of the [CII] 1…
The Eddington ratio ($λ_{\rm Edd}$) of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is a fundamental parameter that governs the cosmic growth of SMBHs. Although gas mass accretion onto SMBHs is sustained when they are surrounded by large amounts of gas, little is known about the molecular content of galaxies, particularly those hosting super-Eddington SMBHs ($λ_{\rm Edd} > 1$: the key phase of SMBH growth). Here, we compiled reported optical and $^{12}$CO(1--0) data of local quasars to characterize their hosts. We found that higher $λ_{\rm Edd}$ SMBHs tend to reside in gas rich (i.e., high gas mass to ste…
We present the analysis of the rest-frame optical-to-UV spectrum of APM 08279+5255, a well-known lensed broad absorption line (BAL) quasar at $z = 3.911$. The spectroscopic data are taken with the optical DOLoRes and near-IR NICS instruments at TNG, and include the previously unexplored range between C III] $λ$1910 and [O III] $λλ$4959,5007. We investigate the possible presence of multiple BALs by computing "balnicity" and absorption indexes (i.e. BI, BI$_0$ and AI) for the transitions Si IV $λ$1400, C IV $λ$1549, Al III $λ$1860 and Mg II $λ$2800. No clear evidence for the presence of absorpti…
We present the rest-frame optical spectral properties of 155 luminous quasars at 3.3<z<6.4 taken with the AKARI space telescope, including the first detection of H$α$ emission line as far out as z~6. We extend the scaling relation between the rest-frame optical continuum and line luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the high luminosity, high redshift regime that has rarely been probed before. Remarkably, we find that a single log-linear relation can be applied to the 5100${\rm Å}$ and H$α$ AGN luminosities over a wide range of luminosity (10$^{42}$<$L_{5100}$<10$^{47}$ergs/s) or reds…

The absence of high Eddington ratio, obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in local ($z\lesssim0.1$) samples of moderate luminosity AGN has generally been explained to result from radiation pressure on the dusty gas governing the level of nuclear ($\lesssim10$pc) obscuration. However, very high accretion rates are routinely reported among obscured quasars at higher luminosities, and may require a different feedback mechanism. We compile constraints on obscuration and Eddington ratio for samples of X-ray, optical, infrared, and submm selected AGN at quasar luminosities. Whereas moderate luminos…
The diverse properties of broad-line quasars appear to follow a well-defined main sequence along which the optical FeII strength increases. It has been suggested that this sequence is mainly driven by the Eddington ratio (L/L_Edd) of the black hole (BH) accretion. Shen & Ho demonstrated with quasar clustering analysis that the average BH mass decreases with increasing FeII strength when quasar luminosity is fixed, consistent with this suggestion. Here we perform an independent test by measuring the stellar velocity dispersion sigma* (hence the BH mass via the M-sigma* relation) from decomposed…
The quadruple lensed system WGD2038-4008 was recently discovered with the help of new techniques and observations. Even though black hole mass has been estimated for lensed quasars, it has been calculated mostly for one broad emission line of one image, but the images could be affected by microlensing, affecting the results. We present black hole mass (MBH) estimations for images A and B using the three most prominent broad emission lines (H$α$, H$β$ and MgII) obtained in one single-epoch spectra. This is the first time the mass is estimated in a lensed quasar in two images, allowing us to dis…
We used a large, homogeneous sample of 4178 z <= 0.8 Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the strength of Fe II emission and its correlation with other emission lines and physical parameters of active galactic nuclei. We find that the strongest correlations of almost all the emission-line intensity ratios and equivalent widths (EWs) are with the Eddington ratio (L/L_{Edd}), rather than with the continuum luminosity at 5100Å (L_{5100}) or black hole mass (M_{BH}); the only exception is the EW of ultraviolet Fe II emission, which does not correlat…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) can vary significantly in their rest-frame optical/UV continuum emission, and with strong associated changes in broad line emission, on much shorter timescales than predicted by standard models of accretion disks around supermassive black holes. Most such ``changing-look'' or "changing-state" AGN -- and at higher luminosities, changing-look quasars (CLQs) -- have been found via spectroscopic follow-up of known quasars showing strong photometric variability. The Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey of SDSS-IV includes repeat spectroscopy of large numbers of previously-k…
We performed a search for WLQs in the spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 based on Kohonen self-organising maps for nearly 10^5 quasar spectra. The final sample consists of 365 quasars and includes in particular a subsample of 46 WLQs with equivalent widths W(MgII) < 11 A and W(CIV) < 4.8 A. We compared various properties of the WLQs with those of control samples of ordinary quasars. Particular attention was paid to selection effects. The WLQs have, on average, significantly higher luminosities, Eddington ratios, and accretion rates. About half of the excess com…

We report the results from a search for z > 6.5 quasars using the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 3 dataset combined with the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and WISE All-Sky Survey. Our photometric selection method is shown to be highly efficient in identifying clean samples of high-redshift quasars leading to spectroscopic confirmation of three new quasars - VDESJ 0244-5008 (z=6.724), VDESJ 0020-3653 (z=6.834) and VDESJ 0246-5219 (z=6.90) - which were selected as the highest priority candidates in the survey data without any need for additional follow-up observations. The new quasars span the fu…
This study aims at identifying luminous quasars at $z>5.7$ among X-ray-selected sources in the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) in order to place a lower limit on black hole accretion well into the epoch of re-ionisation. We confirm the low significance detection with eROSITA of a previously known, optically faint $z=6.56$ quasar from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) survey. We obtained a pointed follow-up observation of the source with the Chandra X-ray telescope in order to confirm the eROSITA detection. Using new near-infrared spectroscopy, we d…
The recent advanced LIGO/Virgo detections of gravitational waves (GWs) from stellar binary black hole (BBH) mergers, in particular GW190521, which is potentially associated with a quasar, have stimulated renewed interest in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as factories of merging BBHs. Compact objects evolving from massive stars are unavoidably enshrouded by a massive envelope to form accretion-modified stars (AMSs) in the dense gaseous environment of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion disk. We show that most AMSs form binaries due to gravitational interaction with each other during radia…
We use homogeneous samples of radio-quiet Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the connection between the velocity shift and the equivalent width (EW) of the [OIII] 5007 emission line, and their correlations with physical parameters of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We find a significant and negative correlation between the EW of the core component, EW(core), and the blueshift of either the core (the peak), the wing, or the total profile of [OIII] emission; it is fairly strong for the blueshift of the total profile particularly. However, both qu…
Black hole systems with outflows are characterized by intrinsic physical quantities such as the outflow beam power, $L_j$, the bolometric accretion disk luminosity, $L_{bol}$, and black hole mass or Eddington luminosity, $L_{Edd}$. When these systems produce compact radio emission and X-ray emission, they can be placed on the fundamental plane (FP), an empirical relationship between compact radio luminosity, X-ray luminosity, and black hole mass. We consider a fundamental line (FL) of black hole activity written in terms of dimensionless intrinsic physical quantities: $\rm{log} (L_j/L_{Edd}) =…
