Based on recent results on the frequency of MgII absorption line systems in the "QSO behind RCS clusters" survey (QbC), we analyse the effects of the cluster environment on the sizes of baryonic haloes around galaxies. We use two independent models, i) an empirical halo occupation model which fits current measurements of the clustering and luminosity function of galaxies at low and high redshifts, and ii) the GALFORM semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, which follows the evolution of the galaxy population from first principles, adjusted to match the statistics of low and high redshift galaxies. In both models we constrain the MgII halo sizes of field and cluster galaxies using observational results on the observed MgII statistics. Our results for the field are in good agreement with previous works, indicating a typical \mgii\ halo size of $r_MgII ~ 50h_71^-1kpc in the semi-analytic model, and slightly lower in the halo occupation number approach. For the cluster environment, we find that both models require a median MgII halo size of r_MgII< 10h_71^-1kpc in order to reproduce the observed statistics on absorption line systems in clusters of galaxies. Based on the Chen & Tinker (2008) result that stronger systems occur closer to the MgII halo centre, we find that strong absorption systems in clusters of galaxies occur at roughly a fixed fraction of the cold-warm halo size out to 1h_71^-1Mpc from the cluster centres. In contrast, weaker absorption systems appear to occur at progressively shorter relative fractions of this halo as the distance to the cluster centre decreases.
We study the origin of absorption features on the blue side of the C IV broad emission line of the large-separation lensed quasar SDSS J1029+2623 at z_em ~ 2.197. The quasar images, produced by a foreground cluster of galaxies, have a maximum separation angle of ~ 22".5. The large angular separation suggests that the sight-lines to the quasar central source can go through different regions of outflowing winds from the accretion disk of the quasar, providing a unique opportunity to study the structure of outflows from the accretion disk, a key ingredient for the evolution of quasars as well as …
We report a correlation between velocity offset (beta = v/c) of strong Mg II absorption systems and the bolometric luminosity (L_bol) of quasars in SDSS-DR7. We find that, beta shows a power law increase with L_bol, with a slope (~ 1/4). We find that such a relation of beta with L_bol is expected for outflows driven by scattering of black hole radiation by dust grains, and which are launched from the innermost dust survival radius. Our results indicate that a significant fraction of the strong MgII absorbers, in the range of beta = (0--0.4) may be associated with the quasars themselves.
Randomly oriented flattened spheroids have been used to describe a broad range of astrophysical phenomena. Here we use this geometric approach to derive equations representing lines of sight through quasar absorption clouds to constrain cloud sizes.
We test whether the Tinker & Chen model of MgII absorption due to the gaseous halo around a galaxy can reproduce absorption in quasar pairs (both lensed and physical) and lensed triples and quads from the literature. These quasars exhibit absorption from a total of 38 MgII systems spanning z=0.043 - 2.066 with mean redshift <z>=1.099 and weighted mean rest-frame equivalent width of 0.87 Ang. Using the Tinker & Chen model to generate simulated sight-lines, we marginalize the unknown parameters of the absorbing galaxies: dark matter halo mass, impact parameter, and azimuthal angle on the sky. We…
The aim of this project is to identify low-redshift host galaxies of quasar absorption-line systems by selecting galaxies which are seen in projection onto quasar sightlines. To this end, we use the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR7) to construct a parent sample of 97489 galaxy/quasar projections at impact parameters of up to 100 kpc to the foreground galaxy. We then search the quasar spectra for absorption line systems of Ca II and Na I within +- 500 km/s of the galaxy's velocity. This yields 92 Ca II and 16 Na I absorption systems. We find that most of the Ca II …
We present HST-COS spectra of ten quasars located behind M31, selected to investigate the properties of gas associated with its extended disk and high velocity clouds (HVCs). The sightlines have impact parameters ranging between b= 13 kpc and 112 kpc. No absorption is detected in the four sightlines beyond b=57 kpc. Of the six remaining sightlines, all of which lie at b<32 kpc and within the N(HI)= 2E18 cm^{-2} boundary of the HI disk of M31, we detect low-ionization absorption at M31 velocities along four of them (three of which include MgII absorption). We also detect MgII absorption from an…
Q0302-003 ($z=3.2860 \pm 0.0005$) was the first quasar discovered that showed a He II Gunn-Peterson trough, a sign of incomplete helium reionization at $z > 2.9$. We present its HST/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph far-UV medium-resolution spectrum, which resolves many spectral features for the first time, allowing study of the quasar itself, the intergalactic medium, and quasar proximity effects. Q0302-003 has a harder intrinsic extreme-UV spectral index than previously claimed, as determined from both a direct fit to the spectrum (yielding $α_ν = -0.8$) and the helium-to-hydrogen ion ratio in the…
We analyze the line-of-sight baryonic acoustic feature in the two-point correlation function ξ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample (0.16 < z < 0.47). By defining a narrow line-of-sight region, rp < 5.5 Mpc/h, where rp is the transverse separation component, we measure a strong excess of clustering at ~ 110 Mpc/h, as previously reported in the literature. We also test these results in an alternative coordinate system, by defining the line-of-sight as θ < 3°, where θ is the opening angle. This clustering excess appears much stronger than the feature in the bet…
Context: A significantly higher incidence of strong (rest equivalent width W_r > 1 Å) intervening Mg II absorption is observed along gamma-ray burst (GRB) sight-lines relative to those of quasar sight-lines. A geometrical explanation for this discrepancy has been suggested: the ratio of the beam size of the source to the characteristic size of a Mg II absorption system can influence the observed Mg II equivalent width, if these two sizes are comparable. Aims: We investigate whether the differing beam sizes of the continuum source and broad-line region of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars…
Observations of quasars at redshifts z > 6 reveal that 10^9 Msol supermassive black holes (SMBHs) had already formed when the Universe was < 0.9 Gyr old. One hypothesis for the origins of these SMBHs is that they grew from the remnants of the first generation of massive stars, which formed in low-mass (~ 10^5 to 10^6 Msol) dark matter minihaloes at z > 20. This is the regime where baryonic streaming motions--the relative velocities of baryons with respect to dark matter in the early Universe--most strongly inhibit star formation by suppressing gas infall and cooling. We investigate the impact …
We demonstrate that the UV brightest quasars at z=1-2 live in overdense environments. This is based on an analysis of deep Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 G141 grism spectroscopy of the galaxies along the lines-of-sight to UV luminous quasars in the redshift range z=1-2. This constitutes some of the deepest grism spectroscopy performed by WFC3, with 4 roll angles spread over a year of observations to mitigate the effect of overlapping spectra. Of the 12 quasar fields studied, 8 display evidence for a galaxy overdensity at the redshift of the quasar. One of the overdensities, PG0117+213 at z=1.50, …
Simulations predict that gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is distributed in filamentary structures that connect dense galaxy clusters and form the cosmic web. These structures of predominantly ionized hydrogen are difficult to observe directly due to their lack of emitting regions. We serendipitously detected an overdensity of log N(HI) > 18.0 absorbers at z = 2.69 along the lines of sight toward a pair of background quasars. Three main absorption regions spanning ~2000 km/s (corresponding to 6.4 (h_70)^(-1) Mpc proper) are coincident in the two lines of sight, which are separated by ~90 …
We examine the relationship between galaxies and the intergalactic medium at z < 1 using a group of three closely spaced background QSOs with z_em ~1 observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. Using a new grouping algorithm, we identify groups of galaxies and absorbers across the three QSO sightlines that may be physically linked. There is an excess number of such groups compared to the number we expect from a random distribution of absorbers at a confidence level of 99.9%. The same search is performed with mock spectra generated using a hydrodynamic simulation, and we find the vast majority of…
With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasar's environment in absorption. We use a sample of 650 projected quasar pairs to study the HI Lya absorption transverse to luminous, z~2 quasars at proper separations of 30kpc < R < 1Mpc. In contrast to measurements along the line-of-sight, regions transverse to quasars exhibit enhanced HI Lya absorption and a larger variance than the ambient intergalactic medium, with increasing absorption and variance toward smaller scales. Analysis of composite spectra reveals excess absor…
We present accurate time delays for the quadruply imaged quasar HE 0435-1223. The delays were measured from 575 independent photometric points obtained in the R-band between January 2004 and March 2010. With seven years of data, we clearly show that quasar image A is affected by strong microlensing variations and that the time delays are best expressed relative to quasar image B. We measured Delta_t(BC) = 7.8+/-0.8 days, Delta_t(BD) = -6.5+/-0.7 days and Delta_t_CD = -14.3+/-0.8 days. We spacially deconvolved HST NICMOS2 F160W images to derive accurate astrometry of the quasar images and to in…
There is evidence from radio-loud quasars to suggest that the distribution of the H$β$ broad emission line (BEL) gas is arranged in a predominantly planar orientation, and this result may well also apply to radio-quiet quasars. This would imply that the observed full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the H$β$ BELs is dependent on the orientation of the line of sight to the gas. If this view is correct then we propose that the FWHM can be used as a surrogate, in large samples, to determine the line of sight to the H$β$ BELs in broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs).... It is determined that ther…
Background quasars are potentially sensitive probes of galactic outflows provided that one can determine the origin of the absorbing material since both gaseous disks and strong bipolar outflows can contribute to the absorption cross-section. Using a dozen quasars passing near spectroscopically identified galaxies at $z\sim0.1$, we find that the azimuthal orientation of the quasar sight-lines with strong MgII absorption (with EW>0.3 Å) is bi-modal: about half the MgII sight-lines are aligned with the major axis and the other half are within 30deg. of the minor axis, showing that bipolar outflo…
The recent $\sim 4 \, σ$ Hubble constant, $H_{0}$, tension is observed between the value of $H_{0}$ from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia). It is a decade since this tension is excruciating the modern astrophysical community. To shed light on this problem is key to consider probes at intermediate redshifts between SNe Ia and CMB and reduce the uncertainty on $H_0$. Toward these goals, we fill the redshift gap by employing Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Quasars (QSOs), reaching $z=9.4$ and $z=7.6$, respectively, combined with Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO)…
We study the impact of relativistic effects in the 3-dimensional cross-correlation between Lyman-$α$ forest and quasars. Apart from the relativistic effects, which are dominated by the Doppler contribution, several systematic effects are also included in our analysis (intervening metals, unidentified high column density systems, transverse proximity effect and effect of the UV fluctuations). We compute the signal-to-noise ratio for the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), the extended Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (D…
There is nearly a factor of four difference in the number density of intervening MgII absorbers as determined from gamma-ray burst (GRB) and quasar lines of sight. We use a Monte-Carlo simulation to test if a dust extinction bias can account for this discrepancy. We apply an empirically determined relationship between dust column density and MgII rest equivalent width to simulated quasar sight-lines and model the underlying number of quasars that must be present to explain the published magnitude distribution of SDSS quasars. We find that an input MgII number density dn/dz of 0.273 +- 0.002 ov…
Using numerical simulations of structure formation, we investigate multiple methods of determining the strength of the proximity effect in the HI Lyalpha forest. We analyze three high resolution (~10kpc) redshift snapshots (z=4,3,2.25) of a Hydro-Particle-Mesh simulation to obtain realistic absorption spectra of the HI Lyalpha forest. We begin our analysis investigating the intrinsic biases thought to arise in the widely adopted standard technique of combining multiple lines of sight when searching for the proximity effect. We confirm the existence of this biases. We then concentrate on the an…
Measurements of the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak in the redshift-space correlation function yield the angular diameter distance D_A(z) and the Hubble parameter H(z) as a function of redshift, constraining the properties of dark energy and space curvature. We discuss the perturbations introduced in the galaxy correlation function by gravitational lensing through the effect of magnification bias and its cross-correlation with the galaxy density. At the BAO scale, gravitational lensing adds a small and slowly varying component to the galaxy correlation function and does not change its…
We present the results from our 21-cm absorption survey of a sample of 5 quasar-galaxy pairs (QGPs), with the redshift of the galaxies in the range 0.03<zg<0.18, selected from the SDSS. The HI 21-cm absorption was searched towards the 9 sight lines with impact parameters ranging from 10 to 55 kpc using GMRT. 21-cm absorption was detected only in one case i.e. towards the Quasar (zq=2.625 SDSS J124157.54+633241.6)-galaxy (zg=0.143 SDSS J124157.26+633237.6) pair with the impact parameter 11 kpc. The quasar sight line in this case pierces through the stellar disk of a galaxy having near solar met…
We analyse the proximity zone of the intergalactic matter around high-redshift quasars in a cosmological environment. In a box of 64 h-1 Mpc base length we employ dark matter only simulations. For estimating the hydrogen temperature and density distribution we use the effective equation of state. Hydrogen is assumed to be in photoionisation equilibrium with a model background flux which is fit to recent observations of the mean optical depth and transmission flux statistics. At redshifts z = 3, 4, and 4.8, we select model quasar positions at the centre of the 20 most massive halos and 100 less…
We recently presented radio observations of a large sample of radio-loud broad absorption line (BAL) quasars from the SDSS and FIRST surveys, as well as a well matched sample of unabsorbed quasars, primarily to measure their radio spectral indices and estimate ensemble orientations. Here, we analyze the SDSS spectra of these samples and compare the rest-frame ultraviolet properties of radio-loud BAL and non-BAL quasars. Ultraviolet properties include the continuum shape, emission-line measurements of C IV, Al III, C III], Fe II, and Mg II, and BAL properties including the balnicity index (BI),…
We present results from a search for galaxies that give rise to damped Lyman alpha (DLA), subDLA, and Lyman limit system (LLS) absorption at redshifts 0.1 ~< z ~< 1 in the spectra of background quasars. The sample was formed from a larger sample of strong MgII absorbers (W_0^(2796) >= 0.3 A) whose HI column densities were determined by measuring the Ly-alpha line in HST UV spectra. Photometric redshifts, galaxy colors, and proximity to the quasar sightline, in decreasing order of importance, were used to identify galaxies responsible for the absorption. Our sample includes 80 absorption system…
We exploit the widely-separated images of the lensed quasar SDSS J1029+2623 ($z_{em}$=2.197, $θ=22^{\prime\prime}\!\!.5$) to observe its outflowing wind through two different sightlines. We present an analysis of three observations, including two with the Subaru telescope in 2010 February (Misawa et al. 2013) and 2014 April (Misawa et al. 2014), separated by 4 years, and one with the Very Large Telescope, separated from the second Subaru observation by $\sim$2 months. We detect 66 narrow absorption lines (NALs), of which 24 are classified as intrinsic NALs that are physically associated with t…
We present a new determination of the dust content and near-ultraviolet/optical extinction curves associated with a sample of ~8300 strong (equivalent width > 1A) Mg II absorbers, with redshifts 0.4<z<2.2, identified in Sloan Digital Sky survey (SDSS) spectra of quasars. Taking into account the selection effects that result from dust extinction, including the reduction in the signal-to-noise ratio of an absorber appearing in a reddened quasar spectrum, we find a stronger dependence of E(B-V) on absorber rest equivalent width (EW) than in other published work. The dependence of the median redde…
We present the first attempt at measuring the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the large scale cross-correlation between the magnesium-II doublet (MgII) flux transmission field and the position of quasar and galaxy tracers. The MgII flux transmission continuous field at $0.3 < z < 1.6$ is measured from 500,589 quasar spectra obtained in the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and the extended BOSS (eBOSS). The position of 246,697 quasar tracers and 1,346,776 galaxy tracers are extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) I, II, BOSS and eBOSS catalogs. In addition to …
(Abridged) With the largest homogeneous quasar sample with optical spectra and robust radio morphology classifications assembled to date, we investigate quasar radio and optical properties with unprecedented statistical power. The data consist of 4714 radio quasars from FIRST with S_{20}>2mJy and SDSS spectra. Radio morphology classes include core-only (core), core-lobe (lobe), core-jet (jet), lobe-core-lobe (triple), and double-lobe. We examine the optical colors of radio-morphology subsamples and find that radio quasars with core emission unresolved by FIRST (on 5" scale) have a redder color…
Molecular hydrogen (H2) absorption features observed in the line-of-sight to Q2348-011 at redshift zabs = 2.426 are analysed for the purpose of detecting a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio mu=mp/me. By its structure Q2348-011 is the most complex analysed H2 absorption system at high redshift so far, featuring at least seven distinctly visible molecular velocity components. The multiple velocity components associated with each transition of H2 were modeled simultaneously by means of a comprehensive fitting method. The fiducial model resulted in dmu/mu = (-0.68 +/- 2.78) x…
We present Gemini/GMOS-S multi-object spectroscopy of 31 galaxy cluster candidates at redshifts between 0.2 and 1.0 and centered on QSO sight-lines taken from Lopez et al. (2008). The targets were selected based on the presence of a intervening MgII absorption system at a similar redshift to that of a galaxy cluster candidate lying at a projected distance < 2 h^{-1}Mpc from the QSO sight-line (a 'photometric-hit'). The absorption systems span rest-frame equivalent widths between 0.015 and 2.028 angstroms. Our aim was 3-fold: 1) identify the absorbing galaxies and determine their impact paramet…
We present a weak gravitational lensing measurement of the external convergence along the line of sight to the quadruply lensed quasar HE$\,$0435$-$1223. Using deep r-band images from Subaru-Suprime-Cam we observe galaxies down to a 3$σ$ limiting magnitude of $\sim 26$ mags resulting in a source galaxy density of 14 galaxies / arcmin$^2$ after redshift-based cuts. Using an inpainting technique and Multi-Scale Entropy filtering algorithm, we find that the region in close proximity to the lens has an estimated external convergence of $κ=-0.012^{+0.020}_{-0.013}$ and is hence marginally under-den…
The flux ratios in the multiple images of gravitationally lensed quasars can provide evidence for dark matter substructure in the halo of the lensing galaxy if the flux ratios differ from those predicted by a smooth model of the lensing galaxy mass distribution. However, it is also possible that baryonic structures in the lensing galaxy, such as edge-on discs, can produce flux-ratio anomalies. In this work, we present the first statistical analysis of flux-ratio anomalies due to baryons from a numerical simulation perspective. We select galaxies with various morphological types in the Illustri…
We study the geometry and the internal structure of the outflowing wind from the accretion disk of a quasar by observing multiple sightlines with the aid of strong gravitational lensing. Using Subaru/HDS, we performed high-resolution ($R$ $\sim$ 36,000) spectroscopic observations of images A and B of the gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS J1029+2623 (at $z_{em}$ $\sim$ 2.197) whose image separation angle, $θ$ $\sim$ 22$^{\prime\prime}\!\!$.5, is the largest among those discovered so far. We confirm that the difference in absorption profiles in the images A and B discovered by Misawa et al. (20…
The prevalence and energetics of quasar feedback is a major unresolved problem in galaxy formation theory. In this paper, we present Gemini Integral Field Unit observations of ionized gas around eleven luminous, obscured, radio-quiet quasars at z~0.5 out to ~15 kpc from the quasar; specifically, we measure the kinematics and morphology of [O III]5007 emission. The round morphologies of the nebulae and the large line-of-sight velocity widths (with velocities containing 80% of the emission as high as 1000 km/s combined with relatively small velocity difference across them (from 90 to 520 km/s) p…
We present a measurement of baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) from Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) absorption and quasars at an effective redshift $z=2.33$ using the complete extended Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). The sixteenth and final eBOSS data release (SDSS DR16) contains all data from eBOSS and its predecessor, the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), providing $210,005$ quasars with $z_{q}>2.10$ that are used to measure Ly$α$ absorption. We measure the BAO scale both in the auto-correlation of Ly$α$ absorption and in its cross correlation with $341,468$ quasars wi…
We investigate the possibility of constraining primordial non-Gaussianity using the 3D bispectrum of Ly-alpha forest. The strength of the quadratic non-Gaussian correction to an otherwise Gaussian primordial gravitational field is assumed to be dictated by a single parameter fnl. We present the first prediction for bounds on fnl using Ly-alpha flux spectra along multiple lines of sight. The 3D Ly-$α$ transmitted flux field is modeled as a biased tracer of the underlying matter distribution sampled along 1D skewers corresponding to quasars sight lines. The precision to which fnl can be constrai…
The current paradigm for the AGN phenomenon is a central engine that consists of an inflow of material accreting in the form of a disk onto a supermassive black hole. Observations in the UV and optical find high velocity ionized material outflowing from the black hole. We present results from Suzaku and XMM-Newton observations of a sample of intrinsic NAL quasars with high velocity outflows. Our derived values of the intrinsic column densities of the X-ray absorbers are consistent with an outflow scenario in which NAL quasars are viewed at smaller inclination angles than BAL quasars. We find t…
We report the detection of a third HI 21-cm absorber in the sight-line towards the z=2.64 quasar MG J0414+0534 (4C +05.19). In addition to the absorption at the host redshift and in the z=0.96 gravitational lens, we find, through a decimetre-wave spectral scan towards this source, strong absorption at z=0.38. We believe this may be associated with "Object X", an additional feature apparent in the field of the lensing galaxy and lensed images, on the basis of its close proximity to the quasar images and the possible detection of the [OIII] doublet in a published optical spectrum. If real, the s…
For each photon wave packet of extragalactic light, the dispersion by line-of-sight intergalactic plasma causes an increase in the envelope width and a chirp (drift) in the carrier frequency. It is shown that for continuous emission of many temporally overlapping wave packets with random epoch phases, such as quasars in the radio band, this in turn leads to quasi-periodic variations in the intensity of the arriving light on timescales between the coherence time (defined as the reciprocal of the bandwidth of frequency selection, taken here as of order 0.01 GHz for radio observations) and the st…
In this Letter, the Evans and Koratkar Atlas of Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph Spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei and Quasars is used to study the redward asymmetry in CIV broad emission lines (BELs). It is concluded that there is a highly significant correlation between the spectral index from 10 GHz to 1350 $Å$ and the amount of excess luminosity in the red wing of the CIV BEL ($>99.9999%$ significance level for the full sample and the radio loud subsample independently, but no correlation is found for the radio quiet subsample). This is interpreted as a correlation between …
We explore the weak lensing effects by ministructures in the line-of-sight in a quadruply lensed quasar MG0414+0534 that shows an anomaly in the flux-ratios. We find that the observed flux-ratio anomaly can be explained by a presence of either a minifilament or a minivoid in the line-of-sight with a surface mass density of the order of 10^(8-9) h^(-1) solar mass /arcsec^2 without taking into account any subhalos in the lensing galaxy. The astrometric perturbation by a possible minifilament/minivoid is <~ 0.001 arcsec and the amplitudes of convergence perturbations due to these perturbers are ~…
The HeII transverse proximity effect - enhanced HeII Lyα transmission in a background sightline caused by the ionizing radiation of a foreground quasar - offers a unique opportunity to probe the emission properties of quasars, in particular the emission geometry (obscuration, beaming) and the quasar lifetime. Building on the foreground quasar survey published in Schmidt+2017, we present a detailed model of the HeII transverse proximity effect, specifically designed to include light travel time effects, finite quasar ages, and quasar obscuration. We post-process outputs from a cosmological hydr…
We explore the high spectral resolution X-ray data towards the quasar 3C273 to search for signals of hot ($\sim10^{6-7}$ K) X-ray-absorbing gas co-located with two established intergalactic FUV OVI absorbers. We analyze the soft X-ray band grating data of all XMM-Newton and Chandra instruments to search for the hot phase absorption lines at the FUV predicted redshifts. The viability of potential line detections is examined by adopting the constraints of a physically justified absorption model. The WHIM hypothesis is investigated with a complementary 3D galaxy distribution analysis, and by comp…
We present analysis of two O VI absorbers at redshift z_{abs} = 0.227, detected in the spectra of two closely spaced QSO sightlines (Q 0107-025 A and B), observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). At the same redshift, presence of a single bright (~ 1.2 L*) galaxy at an impact parameter of ~ 200 kpc (proper) from both the sightlines was reported by Crighton et al. (2010). Using detailed photoionization models we show that the high ionization phases of both the O VI absorbers have similar ionization conditions (e.g. log U ~ -1.1 to -0.9), chem…
We report on an X-ray and optical/UV study of eight Broad Absorption Line (BAL) to non-BAL transforming quasars at $z\,\approx\,$1.7-2.2 over 0.29-4.95 rest-frame years with at least three spectroscopic epochs for each quasar from the SDSS, BOSS, $Gemini$, and ARC 3.5-m telescopes. New $Chandra$ observations obtained for these objects show their values of $α_{\rm ox}$ and $Δα_{\rm ox}$, as well as their spectral energy distributions, are consistent with those of non-BAL quasars. Moreover, our targets have X-ray spectral shapes that are, on average, consistent with weakened absorption with an e…
We statistically study the physical properties of a sample of narrow absorption line (NAL) systems looking for empirical evidences to distinguish between intrinsic and intervening NALs without taking into account any a priori definition or velocity cut-off. We analyze the spectra of 100 quasars with 3.5 < z$\rm_{em}$ < 4.5, observed with X-shooter/VLT in the context of the XQ-100 Legacy Survey. We detect a $\sim$ 8 $σ$ excess in the number density of absorbers within 10,000 km/s of the quasar emission redshift with respect to the random occurrence of NALs. This excess does not show a dependenc…
We report the discovery of a transparent sightline at projected distances of ρ < 20 kpc to an interacting pair of mature galaxies at z = 0.12. The sightline of the UV-bright quasar PG1522+101 at z = 1.328 passes at ρ = 11.5 kpc from the higher-mass galaxy (M_* = 10^10.6 M_Sun) and ρ = 20.4 kpc from the lower-mass one (M_* = 10^10.0 M_Sun). The two galaxies are separated by 9 kpc in projected distance and 30 km/s in line-of-sight velocity. Deep optical images reveal tidal features indicative of close interactions. Despite the small projected distances, the quasar sightline shows little absorpti…
We have collected near-infrared to X-ray data of 20 multi-epoch heavily reddened SDSS quasars to investigate the physical mechanism of reddening. Of these, J2317+0005 is found to be a UV cutoff quasar. Its continuum, which usually appears normal, decreases by a factor 3.5 at 3000Å, compared to its more typical bright state during an interval of 23 days. During this sudden continuum cut-off, the broad emission line fluxes do not change, perhaps due to the large size of the Broad Line Region (BLR), r > 23 / (1+z) days. The UV continuum may have suffered a dramatic drop out. However, there are so…
We have measured the optical linear polarization of quasars belonging to Gpc-scale quasar groups at redshift z ~ 1.3. Out of 93 quasars observed, 19 are significantly polarized. We found that quasar polarization vectors are either parallel or perpendicular to the directions of the large-scale structures to which they belong. Statistical tests indicate that the probability that this effect can be attributed to randomly oriented polarization vectors is of the order of 1%. We also found that quasars with polarization perpendicular to the host structure preferentially have large emission line widt…
We use spectroscopy of close pairs of quasars to study diffuse gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding a sample of 40 Damped Lya systems (DLAs). The primary sightline in each quasar pair probes an intervening DLA in the redshift range 1.6 < z_DLA < 3.6, such that the second quasar sightline then probes Lya, CII, SiII, and CIV absorption in the CGM transverse to the DLA to projected distances $R_{\perp} < 300$ kpc. Analysis of the Lya profiles in these CGM sightlines constrains the covering fraction (f_C) of optically thick HI (having column density N_HI > 10^17.2 cm^-2) to be greate…
The large opacity fluctuations in the $z > 5.5$ Ly$α$ forest may indicate inhomogeneous progress of reionization. To explain the observed large scatter of the effective Ly$α$ optical depth ($τ_{\rm eff}$) of the intergalactic medium (IGM), fluctuation of UV background ($Γ$ model) or the IGM gas temperature ($T$ model) have been proposed, which predict opposite correlations between $τ_{\rm eff}$ and galaxy density. In order to address which model can explain the large scatter of $τ_{\rm eff}$, we search for Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) around two (J1137+3549 and J1602+4228) quasar sightlines with $τ_{…
Galactic outflows are thought to eject baryons back out to the circum-galactic medium (CGM). Studies based on metal absorption lines (MgII in particular) in the spectra of background quasars indicate that the gas is ejected anisotropically, with galactic winds likely leaving the host in a bi-conical flow perpendicular to the galaxy disk. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of an outflow from a z = 0.7 "green-valley" galaxy (log($M_*$/$\mathrm{M}_\odot$) = 9.9; SFR = 0.5 $\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$) probed by two background sources part of the MUSE Gas Flow and Wind (MEGAFLOW…
In this paper, we study the sizes of quasar proximity zones with synthetic quasar absorption spectra obtained by post-processing a Cosmic Reionization On Computers (CROC) simulation. CROC simulations have both relatively large box sizes and high spacial resolution, allowing us to resolve Lyman limit systems, which are crucial for modeling the quasar absorption spectra. We find that before reionization most quasar proximity zone sizes grow steadily for $\sim 10$ Myr, while after reionization they grow rapidly but only for $\sim 0.1$ Myr. We also find a slow growth of $R_{\rm obs}$ with decreasi…
