We consider additive functionals as a time and space-dependent function of a diffusion corresponding to nonhomogeneous uniformly elliptic divergence form operator. We show that if the function belongs to natural domain of strong solutions of PDEs then there is a version of this function such that additive functional is a continuous Dirichlet process for almost every starting points of diffusion and we describe the martingale and the zero-quadratic variation parts of its decomposition. We show also that under slightly stronger condition on the function this property holds for every starting point. Finally, we prove an extension of the Itô formula.
We present several results on the smoothness in $L_{p}$ sense of filtering densities under the Lipschitz continuity assumption on the coefficients of a partially observable diffusion processes. We obtain them by rewriting in divergence form filtering equation which are usually considered in terms of formally adjoint to operators in nondivergence form.
Let E be an unbounded open (or closed) domain in Euclidean space of dimension greater or equal to two. We present conservativeness criteria for (possibly reflected) diffusions with state space E that are associated to fairly general perturbed divergence form operators. Our main tool is a recently extended forward and backward martingale decomposition, which reduces to the well-known Lyons-Zheng decomposition in the symmetric case.
We study Gaussian approximations to the distribution of a diffusion. The approximations are easy to compute: they are defined by two simple ordinary differential equations for the mean and the covariance. Time correlations can also be computed via solution of a linear stochastic differential equation. We show, using the Kullback-Leibler divergence, that the approximations are accurate in the small noise regime. An analogous discrete time setting is also studied. The results provide both theoretical support for the use of Gaussian processes in the approximation of diffusions, and methodological…
Let $x$ denote a diffusion process defined on a closed compact manifold. In an earlier article, the author introduced a new approach to constructing admissible vector fields on the associated space of paths, under the assumption of ellipticity of $x$. In this article, this method is extended to yield similar results for degenerate diffusion processes. In particular, these results apply to non-elliptic diffusions satisfying Hörmander's condition.
For a semigroup $P_t$ generated by an elliptic operator on a smooth manifold $M$, we use straightforward martingale arguments to derive probabilistic formulae for $P_t(V(f))$, not involving derivatives of $f$, where $V$ is a vector field on $M$. For non-symmetric generators, such formulae correspond to the derivative of the heat kernel in the forward variable. As an application, these formulae can be used to derive various shift-Harnack inequalities.
We extend the duality between exponential integrals and relative entropy to a variational formula for exponential integrals involving the Renyi divergence. This formula characterizes the dependence of risk-sensitive functionals and related quantities determined by tail behavior to perturbations in the underlying distributions, in terms of the Renyi divergence. The characterization gives rise to upper and lower bounds that are meaningful for all values of a large deviation scaling parameter, allowing one to quantify in explicit terms the robustness of risk-sensitive costs. As applications we co…
In this paper we propose the use of $ϕ$-divergences as test statistics to verify simple hypotheses about a one-dimensional parametric diffusion process $\de X_t = b(X_t, θ)\de t + σ(X_t, θ)\de W_t$, from discrete observations $\{X_{t_i}, i=0, ..., n\}$ with $t_i = iΔ_n$, $i=0, 1, >..., n$, under the asymptotic scheme $Δ_n\to0$, $nΔ_n\to\infty$ and $nΔ_n^2\to 0$. The class of $ϕ$-divergences is wide and includes several special members like Kullback-Leibler, Rényi, power and $α$-divergences. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the test statistics based on $ϕ$-divergences. The limiting law …
In this paper, the Orlicz addition of measures is proposed and an interpretation of the $f$-divergence is provided based on a linear Orlicz addition of two measures. Fundamental inequalities, such as, a dual functional Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality, are established. We also investigate an optimization problem for the $f$-divergence and establish functional affine isoperimetric inequalities for the dual functional Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas of measures.
We study a symmetric diffusion $X$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ in divergence form in a stationary and ergodic environment, with measurable unbounded and degenerate coefficients. We prove a quenched local central limit theorem for $X$, under some moment conditions on the environment; the key tool is a local parabolic Harnack inequality obtained with Moser iteration technique.
We prove that diffusion equations with a space-time stationary and ergodic, divergence-free drift homogenize in law to a deterministic stochastic partial differential equation with Stratonovich transport noise. In the absence of spatial ergodicity, the drift is only partially absorbed into the skew-symmetric part of the flux through the use of an appropriately defined stream matrix. This leaves a time-dependent, spatially-homogenous transport which, for mildly decorrelating fields, converges to a Brownian noise with deterministic covariance in the homogenization limit. The results apply to uni…

This paper considers derivation of $f$-divergence inequalities via the approach of functional domination. Bounds on an $f$-divergence based on one or several other $f$-divergences are introduced, dealing with pairs of probability measures defined on arbitrary alphabets. In addition, a variety of bounds are shown to hold under boundedness assumptions on the relative information. The journal paper, which includes more approaches for the derivation of f-divergence inequalities and proofs, is available on the arXiv at https://arxiv.org/abs/1508.00335, and it has been published in the IEEE Trans. o…
The paper deals with homogenization of divergence form second order parabolic operators whose coefficients are periodic in spatial variables and random stationary in time. Under proper mixing assumptions, we study the limit behaviour of the normalized difference between solutions of the original and the homogenized problems. The asymptotic behaviour of this difference depends crucially on the ratio between spatial and temporal scaling factors. Here we study the case of self-similar parabolic diffusion scaling.
We consider a transport-diffusion equation forced by random noise of three types: additive, linear multiplicative in It$\hat{\mathrm{o}}$'s interpretation, and transport in Stratonovich's interpretation. Via convex integration modified to probabilistic setting, we prove existence of a divergence-free vector field with spatial regularity in Sobolev space and corresponding solution to a transport-diffusion equation with spatial regularity in Lebesgue space, and consequently non-uniqueness in law at the level of probabilistically strong solutions globally in time.
We present a unified technique for sequential estimation of convex divergences between distributions, including integral probability metrics like the kernel maximum mean discrepancy, $φ$-divergences like the Kullback-Leibler divergence, and optimal transport costs, such as powers of Wasserstein distances. This is achieved by observing that empirical convex divergences are (partially ordered) reverse submartingales with respect to the exchangeable filtration, coupled with maximal inequalities for such processes. These techniques appear to be complementary and powerful additions to the existing …
Distributionally robust optimization (DRO) is a widely used framework for optimizing objective functionals in the presence of both randomness and model-form uncertainty. A key step in the practical solution of many DRO problems is a tractable reformulation of the optimization over the chosen model ambiguity set, which is generally infinite dimensional. Previous works have solved this problem in the case where the objective functional is an expected value. In this paper we study objective functionals that are the sum of an expected value and a variance penalty term. We prove that the correspond…
We consider a positive recurrent one-dimensional diffusion process with continuous coefficients and we establish stable central limit theorems for a certain type of additive functionals of this diffusion. In other words we find some explicit conditions on the additive functional so that its fluctuations behave like some $α$-stable process in large time for $α\in(0,2]$.
In this note, with the help of the boundary classification of diffusions, we derive a criterion of the convergence of perpetual integral functionals of transient real-valued diffusions. In the particular case of transient Bessel processes, we note that this criterion agrees with the one obtained via Jeulin's convergence lemma.
Is studied asymptotic expansion for solution of singularly perturbed equation for functional of Markovian evolution in Rd. The view of regular and singular parts of solution is found.
We revisit functional central limit theorems for additive functionals of ergodic Markov diffusion processes. Translated in the language of partial differential equations of evolution, they appear as diffusion limits in the asymptotic analysis of Fokker-Planck type equations. We focus on the square integrable framework, and we provide tractable conditions on the infinitesimal generator, including degenerate or anomalously slow diffusions. We take advantage on recent developments in the study of the trend to the equilibrium of ergodic diffusions. We discuss examples and formulate open problems.
In this paper we will make the computation of the Onsager-Machlup functional of an inhomogeneous uniformly elliptic diffusion process. This functional will have formally the same picture as in the homogeneous case, the only difference come from the infinitesimal variation of the volume. For example in the Ricci flow case, we find some functional which is not so far to the $\mathcal L_{0} $ distance used by Lott to study this flow \cite{Lott:08}. We finish by a application to small ball probability for weighted sup norm, for inhomogeneous diffusion.

We prove a functional non-central limit theorem for jump-diffusions with periodic coefficients driven by strictly stable Levy-processes with stability index bigger than one. The limit process turns out to be a strictly stable Levy process with an averaged jump-measure. Unlike in the situation where the diffusion is driven by Brownian motion, there is no drift related enhancement of diffusivity.
We exhibit a large class of Lyapunov functionals for nonlinear drift-diffusion equations with non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. These are generalizations of large deviation functionals for underlying stochastic many-particle systems, the zero range process and the Ginzburg-Landau dynamics, which we describe briefly. As an application, we prove linear inequalities between such an entropy-like functional and its entropy production functional for the boundary-driven porous medium equation in a bounded domain with positive Dirichlet conditions: this implies exponential rates of relaxa…
We show that an interesting class of functionals of stochastic differential equations can be approximated by a Chen-Fliess series of iterated stochastic integrals and give a L^{2} error estimate, thus generalizing the standard stochastic Taylor expansion. The coefficients in this series are given a very intuitive meaning by using functional derivatives, recently introduced by B. Dupire.
This paper develops central limit theorems (CLT's) and large deviations results for additive functionals associated with reflecting diffusions in which the functional may include a term associated with the cumulative amount of boundary reflection that has occurred. Extending the known central limit and large deviations theory for Markov processes to include additive functionals that incorporate boundary reflection is important in many applications settings in which reflecting diffusions arise, including queueing theory and economics. In particular, the paper establishes the partial differentia…
This paper presents new results on the Edgeworth expansion for high frequency functionals of continuous diffusion processes. We derive asymptotic expansions for weighted functionals of the Brownian motion and apply them to provide the second order Edgeworth expansion for power variation of diffusion processes. Our methodology relies on martingale embedding, Malliavin calculus and stable central limit theorems for semimartingales. Finally, we demonstrate the density expansion for studentized statistics of power variations.
In this paper we study perpetual integral functionals of diffusions. Our interest is focused on cases where such functionals can be expressed as first hitting times for some other diffusions. In particular, we generalize the result which connects one-sided functionals of Brownian motion with drift with first hitting times of reflecting diffusions. Interpretating perpetual integral functionals as hitting times allows us to compute numerically their distributions by applying numerical algorithms for hitting times. Hereby, we discuss two approaches: the numerical inversion of the Laplace transfor…
This is the second part of our survey on exponential functionals of Brownian motion. We focus on the applications of the results about the distributions of the exponential functionals, which have been discussed in the first part. Pricing formula for call options for the Asian options, explicit expressions for the heat kernels on hyperbolic spaces, diffusion processes in random environments and extensions of Lévy's and Pitman's theorems are discussed.
The paper contains sufficient conditions on the function $f$ and the stochastic process $X$ that supply the rate of divergence of the integral functional $\int_0^Tf(X_t)^2dt$ at the rate $T^{1-ε}$ as $T\to\infty$ for every $ε>0$. These conditions include so called small ball estimates which are discussed in detail. Statistical applications are provided.
We prove intertwining relations by twisted gradients for Markov semi-groups. These relations are applied to Brascamp-Lieb type inequalities and spectral gap results. It generalizes the results of [1] from the Euclidean space to Riemannian manifolds and to non symmetric twisted operators.
We consider, for a diffusion process in R^n, the Gallavotti-Cohen functional, defined as the empirical power dissipated in a time interval by the non-conservative part of the drift. We prove a large deviation principle in the limit in which the noise vanishes and the time interval diverges. The corresponding rate functional, which satisfies the fluctuation theorem, is expressed in terms of a variational problem on the classical Freidlin-Wentzell functional.
In this article we study a homogeneous transient diffusion process $X$. We combine the theories of differential equations and of stochastic processes to obtain new results for homogeneous diffusion processes, generalizing the results of Salminen and Yor. The distribution of local time of $X$ is found in a closed form. To this end, a second order differential equation corresponding to the generator of $X$ is considered, and properties of its monotone solutions as functions of a parameter are established using their probabilistic representations. We also provide expressions and upper bounds for …
