In this paper we study perpetual integral functionals of diffusions. Our interest is focused on cases where such functionals can be expressed as first hitting times for some other diffusions. In particular, we generalize the result which connects one-sided functionals of Brownian motion with drift with first hitting times of reflecting diffusions.
Interpretating perpetual integral functionals as hitting times allows us to compute numerically their distributions by applying numerical algorithms for hitting times. Hereby, we discuss two approaches: the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform of the first hitting time and the numerical solution of the PDE associated with the distribution function of the first hitting time.
For numerical inversion of Laplace tranforms we have implemented the Euler algorithm developed by Abate and Whitt. However, perpetuities lead often to diffusions for which the explicit forms of the Laplace transforms of first hitting times are not available. In such cases, and also otherwise, algorithms for numerical solutions of PDE's can be evoked. In particular, we analyze the Kolmogorov PDE of some diffusions appearing in our work via the Crank-Nicolson scheme.
In this note, with the help of the boundary classification of diffusions, we derive a criterion of the convergence of perpetual integral functionals of transient real-valued diffusions. In the particular case of transient Bessel processes, we note that this criterion agrees with the one obtained via Jeulin's convergence lemma.
We ask for necessary and sufficient conditions for almost sure finiteness of the perpetual integrals of a Levy process. Zero-one laws are already known for Brownian motion with drift and spectrally one-sided Levy processes. Under the assumption that local times exist, we use fluctuation theory and Jeulin's lemma to prove the zero-one law.
The paper is devoted to the existence of integral functionals $\int_0^\infty f(X(t))\,{\mathrm{d}t}$ for several classes of processes in $\mathbb{R}$ with $d\ge 3$. Some examples such as Brownian motion, fractional Brownian motion, compound Poisson process, Markov processes admitting densities of transitional probabilities are considered.
We derive a criterium for the almost sure finiteness of perpetual integrals of \LL processes for a class of real functions including all continuous functions and for general one-dimensional Lévy processes that drifts to plus infinity. This generalizes previous work of Döring and Kyprianou, who considered Lévy processes having a local time, leaving the general case as an open problem. It turns out, that the criterium in the general situation simplifies significantly in the situation, where the process has a local time, but we also demonstrate that in general our criterium can not be reduced. Th…
In this article we use a criterion for the integrability of paths of one-dimensional diffusion processes from which we derive new insights on allelic fixation in several situations. This well known criterion involves a simple necessary and sufficient condition based on scale function and speed measure. We provide a new simple proof for this result and also obtain explicit bounds for the moments of such integrals. We also extend this criterion to non-homogeneous processes by use of Girsanov's transform. We apply our results to multi-type population dynamics: using the criterion with appropriate…
Let $X$ be a linear diffusion and $f$ a non-negative, Borel measurable function. We are interested in finding conditions on $X$ and $f$ which imply that the perpetual integral functional $$ I^X_\infty(f):=\int_0^\infty f(X_t) dt $$ is identical in law with the first hitting time of a point for some other diffusion. This phenomenon may often be explained using random time change. Because of some potential applications in mathematical finance, we are considering mainly the case when $X$ is a Brownian motion with drift $μ>0,$ denoted $\{B^{(μ)}_t: t\geq 0\},$ but it is obvious that the method pre…
We study translative integral formulas for certain translation invariant functionals on convex polytopes and discuss local extensions and applications to Poisson processes and Boolean models.
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for almost sure finiteness of integral functionals of spectrally positive Lévy processes. Via Lamperti type transforms, these results can be applied to obtain new integral tests on extinction and explosion behaviors for a class of continuous-state nonlinear branching processes.
We prove change of variables formulas [Itô formulas] for functions of both arithmetic and geometric averages of geometric fractional Brownian motion. They are valid for all convex functions, not only for smooth ones. These change of variables formulas provide us integral representations of functions of average in the sense of generalized Lebesgue-Stieltjes integral.
The article is devoted to the estimation of the rate of convergence of integral functionals of a Markov process. Under the assumption that the given Markov process admits a transition probability density which is differentiable in $t$ and the derivative has an integrable upper bound of a certain type, we derive the accuracy rates for strong and weak approximations of the functionals by Riemannian sums. Some examples are provided.
We provide strong $L_p$-rates of approximation of nonsmooth integral-type functionals of Markov processes by integral sums. Our approach is, in a sense, process insensitive and is based on a modification of some well-developed estimates from the theory of continuous additive functionals of Markov processes.
We prove a functional central limit theorem for integrals $\int_W f(X(t))\, dt$, where $(X(t))_{t\in\mathbb{R}^d}$ is a stationary mixing random field and the stochastic process is indexed by the function $f$, as the integration domain $W$ grows in Van Hove-sense. We discuss properties of the covariance function of the asymptotic Gaussian process.
It is shown that affine functions are the only continuous real valued functions on R whose integrals with respect to compactly supported probability measures depend only on the mean value of the measure.
Under proper scaling and distributional assumptions, we prove the convergence in the Skorokhod space endowed with the M_1-topology of a sequence of stochastic integrals of a deterministic function driven by a time-changed symmetric α-stable Lévy process. The time change is given by the inverse β-stable subordinator.
In this paper, we provide strong $L_2$-rates of approximation of the integral-type functionals of Markov processes by integral sums. We improve the method developed in [2]. Under assumptions on the process formulated only in terms of its transition probability density, we get the accuracy that coincides with that obtained in [3] for a one-dimensional diffusion process.
We obtain weak rates for approximation of an integral functional of a Markov process by integral sums. An assumption on the process is formulated only in terms of its transition probability density, and, therefore, our approach is not strongly dependent on the structure of the process. Applications to the estimates of the rates of approximation of the Feynman--Kac semigroup and of the price of "occupation-time options" are provided.
We study the limit behaviour of a sequence of non-convex, vectorial, random integral functionals, defined on $W^{1,1}$, whose integrands satisfy degenerate linear growth conditions. These involve suitable random, scale-dependent weight-functions. Under minimal assumptions on the integrand and on the weight-functions, we show that the sequence of functionals homogenizes to a non-degenerate functional defined on $BV$.
This article characterizes conjugates and subdifferentials of convex integral functionals over linear spaces of cadlag stochastic processes. The approach is based on new measurability results on the Skorokhod space and new interchange rules of integral functionals that are developed in the article. The main results provide a general approach to apply convex duality in a variety of optimization problems ranging from optimal stopping to singular stochastic control and mathematical finance.
We present quantitative results for the homogenization of uniformly convex integral functionals with random coefficients under independence assumptions. The main result is an error estimate for the Dirichlet problem which is algebraic (but sub-optimal) in the size of the error, but optimal in stochastic integrability. As an application, we obtain quenched $C^{0,1}$ estimates for local minimizers of such energy functionals.
This article characterizes conjugates and subdifferentials of convex integral functionals over the linear space $\mathcal N^\infty$ of stochastic processes of essentially bounded variation (BV) when $\mathcal N^\infty$ is identified with the Banach dual of the space of regular processes. Our proofs are based on new results on the interchange of integration and minimization of integral functionals over BV processes. Under mild conditions, the domain of the conjugate is shown to be contained in the space of semimartingales which leads to several applications in the duality theory in stochastic c…
This article gives dual representations for convex integral functionals on the linear space of regular processes. This space turns out to be a Banach space containing many more familiar classes of stochastic processes and its dual can be identified with the space of optional Radon measures with essentially bounded variation. Combined with classical Banach space techniques, our results allow for a systematic treatment of stochastic optimization problems over BV processes and, in particular, yields a maximum principle for a general class of singular stochastic control problems.
In this paper we establish the associativity property of the pathwise Itô integral in a functional setting for continuous integrators. Here, associativity refers to the computation of the Itô differential of an Itô integral, by means of the intuitive cancellation of the Itô differential and integral signs.
In this paper, we study integral functionals defined on spaces of functions with values on general (non-separable) Banach spaces. We introduce a new class of integrands and multifunctions for which we obtain measurable selection results. Then, we provide an interchange formula between integration and infimum, which enables us to get explicit formulas for the conjugate and Clarke subdifferential of integral functionals. Applications to expected functionals from stochastic programming, optimality conditions for a calculus of variation problem and sweeping processes are given.
For real-valued additive process $(X\_t)\_{t\geq 0}$ a recursive equation is derived for the entire positive moments of functionals $$I\_{s,t}= \int \_s^t\exp(-X\_u)du, \quad 0\leq s<t\leq\infty, $$ in case the Laplace exponent of $X\_t$ exists for positive values of the parameter. From the equation emergesan easy-to-apply sufficient condition for the finiteness of the moments. As an application we study first hitprocesses of diffusions.
In this paper we revisit the integral functional of geometric Brownian motion $I_t= \int_0^t e^{-(μs +σW_s)}ds$, where $μ\in\mathbb{R}$, $σ> 0$, and $(W_s )_s>0$ is a standard Brownian motion. Specifically, we calculate the Laplace transform in $t$ of the cumulative distribution function and of the probability density function of this functional.
Let $\mathcal{S}\subset \mathcal{L}^2 \subset \mathcal{S}^*$ be the Gel'fand triple over the Bernoulli space, where elements of $\mathcal{S}^*$ are called Bernoulli generalized functionals. In this paper, we define integrals of Bernoulli generalized functionals with respect to a spectral measure (projection operator-valued measure) in the framework of $\mathcal{S}\subset \mathcal{L}^2 \subset \mathcal{S}^*$, and examine their fundamental properties. New notions are introduced, several results are obtained and examples are also shown.
