The most critical component of any adaptive numerical quadrature routine is the estimation of the integration error. Since the publication of the first algorithms in the 1960s, many error estimation schemes have been presented, evaluated and discussed. This paper presents a review of existing error estimation techniques and discusses their differences and their common features. Some common shortcomings of these algorithms are discussed and a new general error estimation technique is presented.
Stochastic optimisation problems minimise expectations of random cost functions. We use 'optimise then discretise' method to solve stochastic optimisation. In our approach, accurate quadrature methods are required to calculate the objective, gradient or Hessian which are in fact integrals. We apply the dimension-adaptive sparse grid quadrature to approximate these integrals when the problem is high dimensional. Dimension-adaptive sparse grid quadrature shows high accuracy and efficiency in computing an integral with a smooth integrand. It is a kind of generalisation of the classical sparse gri…
Density tracking by quadrature (DTQ) is a numerical procedure for computing solutions to Fokker-Planck equations that describe probability densities for stochastic differential equations (SDEs). In this paper, we extend upon existing tensorized DTQ procedures by utilizing a flexible quadrature rule that allows for unstructured, adaptive meshes. We propose and describe the procedure for $N$-dimensions, and demonstrate that the resulting adaptive procedure is significantly more efficient than a tensorized approach. Although we consider two-dimensional examples, all our computational procedures a…
Panel-based, kernel-split quadrature is currently one of the most efficient methods available for accurate evaluation of singular and nearly singular layer potentials in two dimensions. However, it can fail completely for the layer potentials belonging to the modified Helmholtz, biharmonic and Stokes equations. These equations depend on a parameter, denoted $α$, and kernel-split quadrature loses its accuracy rapidly when this parameter grows beyond a certain threshold. This paper describes an algorithm that remedies this problem, using per-target adaptive sampling of the source geometry. The r…

Adaptive Bayesian quadrature (ABQ) is a powerful approach to numerical integration that empirically compares favorably with Monte Carlo integration on problems of medium dimensionality (where non-adaptive quadrature is not competitive). Its key ingredient is an acquisition function that changes as a function of previously collected values of the integrand. While this adaptivity appears to be empirically powerful, it complicates analysis. Consequently, there are no theoretical guarantees so far for this class of methods. In this work, for a broad class of adaptive Bayesian quadrature methods, w…
A novel method is proposed to infer Bayesian predictions of computationally expensive models. The method is based on the construction of quadrature rules, which are well-suited for approximating the weighted integrals occurring in Bayesian prediction. The novel idea is to construct a sequence of nested quadrature rules with positive weights that converge to a quadrature rule that is weighted with respect to the posterior. The quadrature rules are constructed using a proposal distribution that is determined by means of nearest neighbor interpolation of all available evaluations of the posterior…
The accumulated quadrature weights of Gaussian quadrature formulae constitute bounds on the integral over the intervals between the quadrature nodes. Classical results in this concern date back to works of Chebyshev, Markov and Stieltjes and are referred to as Separation Theorem of Chebyshev-Markov-Stieltjes (CMS Theorem). Similar separation theorems hold true for some classes of rational Gaussian quadrature. The Krylov subspace for a given matrix and initial vector is closely related to orthogonal polynomials associated with the spectral distribution of the initial vector in the eigenbasis of…
We examine sparse grid quadrature on weighted tensor products (WTP) of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on products of the unit sphere, in the case of worst case quadrature error for rules with arbitrary quadrature weights. We describe a dimension adaptive quadrature algorithm based on an algorithm of Hegland (2003), and also formulate a version of Wasilkowski and Wozniakowski's WTP algorithm (1999), here called the WW algorithm. We prove that the dimension adaptive algorithm is optimal in the sense of Dantzig (1957) and therefore no greater in cost than the WW algorithm. Both algorithms ther…
In this paper we present a locally and dimension-adaptive sparse grid method for interpolation and integration of high-dimensional functions with discontinuities. The proposed algorithm combines the strengths of the generalised sparse grid algorithm and hierarchical surplus-guided local adaptivity. A high-degree basis is used to obtain a high-order method which, given sufficient smoothness, performs significantly better than the piecewise-linear basis. The underlying generalised sparse grid algorithm greedily selects the dimensions and variable interactions that contribute most to the variabil…
The concept of Gauss quadrature can be generalized to approximate linear functionals with complex moments. Following the existing literature, this survey will revisit such generalization. It is well known that the (classical) Gauss quadrature for positive definite linear functionals is connected with orthogonal polynomials, and with the (Hermitian) Lanczos algorithm. Analogously, the Gauss quadrature for linear functionals is connected with formal orthogonal polynomials, and with the non-Hermitian Lanczos algorithm with look-ahead strategy; moreover, it is related to the minimal partial realiz…
Deterministic interpolation and quadrature methods are often unsuitable to address Bayesian inverse problems depending on computationally expensive forward mathematical models. While interpolation may give precise posterior approximations, deterministic quadrature is usually unable to efficiently investigate an informative and thus concentrated likelihood. This leads to a large number of required expensive evaluations of the mathematical model. To overcome these challenges, we formulate and test a multilevel adaptive sparse Leja algorithm. At each level, adaptive sparse grid interpolation and …

We propose a novel Caputo fractional derivative-based optimization algorithm. Upon defining the Caputo fractional gradient with respect to the Cartesian coordinate, we present a generic Caputo fractional gradient descent (CFGD) method. We prove that the CFGD yields the steepest descent direction of a locally smoothed objective function. The generic CFGD requires three parameters to be specified, and a choice of the parameters yields a version of CFGD. We propose three versions -- non-adaptive, adaptive terminal and adaptive order. By focusing on quadratic objective functions, we provide a conv…
When approximating the expectations of a functional of a solution to a stochastic differential equation, the numerical performance of deterministic quadrature methods, such as sparse grid quadrature and quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) methods, may critically depend on the regularity of the integrand. To overcome this issue and improve the regularity structure of the problem, we consider cases in which analytic smoothing (bias-free mollification) cannot be performed and introduce a novel numerical smoothing approach by combining a root-finding method with a one-dimensional numerical integration with re…

We develop an algorithm that computes strongly continuous semigroups on infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces with explicit error control. Given a generator $A$, a time $t>0$, an arbitrary initial vector $u_0$ and an error tolerance $ε>0$, the algorithm computes $\exp(tA)u_0$ with error bounded by $ε$. The algorithm is based on a combination of a regularized functional calculus, suitable contour quadrature rules, and the adaptive computation of resolvents in infinite dimensions. As a particular case, we show that it is possible, even when only allowing pointwise evaluation of coefficients, to co…
This paper reviews the adaptive sparse grid discontinuous Galerkin (aSG-DG) method for computing high dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs) and its software implementation. The C\texttt{++} software package called AdaM-DG, implementing the aSG-DG method, is available on Github at \url{https://github.com/JuntaoHuang/adaptive-multiresolution-DG}. The package is capable of treating a large class of high dimensional linear and nonlinear PDEs. We review the essential components of the algorithm and the functionality of the software, including the multiwavelets used, assembling of biline…
