Intra and intersubband scattering rates and electron capture rates are considered when mediated by hybrid optical phonons in an AlAs/GaAs/AlAs double heterostructure confined between two outer metallic barriers. In evaluating scattering rates we concentrate first on an infinite quantum well for the electrons and show that the presence of the outer metal barriers results in reductions of the intra and intersubband scattering rates due to the suppression of the interface-like modes. For a quantum well (QW) with a finite depth we find that the outer barriers are responsible for the existence of a discrete energy spectrum above the well. The electron capture process under these circumstances is defined as the electron transition from the first electron subband above the well to all possible subbands inside the well by the emission of hybrid phonons. Explicit calculations reveal that the capture rates are characterized by sharp peaks, referred to as electron resonances which arise when a new electron state is generated on increasing the quantum well width. Other sharp peaks are identified as phonon resonances and arise when the energy of the initial state differs by a phonon energy from an electron state at the bottom of a quantum well subband.
We theoretically and numerically present the hybrid phonon modes for the double heterostructure GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs and their interactions with electrons. More specifically, we have calculated the electron capture within a symmetric quantum well via the emission of hybrid phonons. Our investigation shows that the capture rates via the hybrid phonons are matched to the rates predicted by the dielectric continuum (DC) model and the concentration of aluminium which is an important parameter for controlling the electron capture process in light emitting diodes (LED).
We theoretically study magnon-phonon hybrid excitations (magnon-polarons) in two-dimensional antiferromagnets on a honeycomb lattice. With an in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) allowed from mirror symmetry breaking from phonons, we find non-trivial Berry curvature around the anti-crossing rings among magnon and both optical and acoustic phonon bands, which gives rise to finite Chern numbers. We show that the Chern numbers of the magnon-polaron bands can be manipulated by changing the magnetic field direction or strength. We evaluate the thermal Hall conductivity reflecting the no…
We report resonant Raman spectroscopy of neutral excitons X$^0$ and intravalley trions X$^-$ in hBN-encapsulated MoS$_2$ monolayer embedded in a nanobeam cavity. By temperature tuning the detuning between Raman modes of MoS$_2$ lattice phonons and X$^0$/X$^-$ emission peaks, we probe the mutual coupling of excitons, lattice phonons and cavity vibrational phonons. We observe an enhancement of X$^0$-induced Raman scattering and a suppression for X$^-$-induced, and explain our findings as arising from the tripartite exciton-phonon-phonon coupling. The cavity vibrational phonons provide intermedia…
Graphene plasmonics is of great interest for compact optical devices working in broad frequency domains with ultrahigh speed and very low energy consumption. However, graphene plasmons damp out quickly on most substrates mainly due to scattering loss from substrate surface phonons and impurities. Here we discover a new hybridized plasmon-phonon polariton mode in graphene/h-BN van der Waals heterostructures, which enables ultralong hybrid plasmon lifetime up to 1.6 picosecond, the longest plasmon lifetime ever demonstrated. Such remarkably long lifetime arises from the coupling of long-lifetime…
In hybrid lead halide perovskites, the coupling between photogenerated charges and the ionic degrees of freedom plays a crucial role in defining the intrinsic limit of carrier mobility and lifetime. However, direct investigation of this fundamental interaction remains challenging because its relevant dynamics occur on ultrashort spatial and ultrafast temporal scales. Here, we unveil the coupled electron-lattice dynamics of a CH3NH3PbI3 single crystal upon intense photoexcitation through a unique combination of ultrafast electron diffraction, time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, and time-d…
We theoretically study the Berry curvature of the magnon induced by the hybridization with the acoustic phonons via the spin-orbit and dipolar interactions. We first discuss the magnon-phonon hybridization via the dipolar interaction, and show that the dispersions have gapless points in momentum space, some of which form a loop. Next, when both spin-orbit and dipolar interactions are considered, we show anisotropic texture of the Berry curvature and its divergence with and without gap-closing. Realistic evaluation of the consequent anomalous velocity is given for yttrium iron garnet.
We have studied the absorption of electromagnetic radiation of an anisotropic quantum dot taking into account the spin-flip processes that is associated with the interaction of the electrons with optical phonons. It is shown that these processes lead to the resonance absorption. Explicit formula is derived for the absorption coefficient. The positions of the resonances peaks are found.
Two-dimensional (2D) layered hybrid perovskites provide an ideal platform for studying the properties of excitons. Here, we report on a strong triplet-exciton and longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon coupling in 2D (C6H5CH2CH2NH3, PEA)2PbBr4 perovskites. The triplet excitons exhibit strong photoluminescence (PL) in thick perovskite microflakes, and the PL is not detectable for monolayer microflakes. The coupling strength of the triplet exciton-LO phonon is approximately two to three times greater than that of the singlet exciton-LO phonon with a LO phonon energy of about 21 meV. This difference mi…
Graphene sheets encapsulated between hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) slabs display superb electronic properties due to very limited scattering from extrinsic disorder sources such as Coulomb impurities and corrugations. Such samples are therefore expected to be ideal platforms for highly-tunable low-loss plasmonics in a wide spectral range. In this Article we present a theory of collective electron density oscillations in a graphene sheet encapsulated between two hBN semi-infinite slabs (hBN/G/hBN). Graphene plasmons hybridize with hBN optical phonons forming hybrid plasmon-phonon (HPP) modes. W…
We show that electron-phonon coupling strongly affects transport properties of the Luttinger liquid hybridized with a resonant level. Namely, this coupling significantly modifies the effective energy-dependent width of the resonant level in two different geometries, corresponding to the resonant or antiresonant transmission in the Fermi gas. This leads to a rich phase diagram for a metal-insulator transition induced by the hybridization with the resonant level.
Counter-rotating-wave terms (CRWTs) are traditionally viewed to be crucial in open small quantum systems with strong system-bath dissipation. Here by exemplifying in a nonequilibrium qubit-phonon hybrid model, we show that CRWTs can play the significant role in quantum heat transfer even with weak system-bath dissipation. By using coherent phonon states, we obtain the quantum master equation with heat exchange rates contributed by rotating-wave-terms (RWTs) and CRWTs, respectively. We find that including only RWTs, steady state heat current and current fluctuations will be significantly suppre…
Hybrid Perovskites have shown a great potential for applications in photovoltaics and light-emitting devices with high efficiency. Interaction between defect-induced trapped excitons and phonons plays an important role in understanding the emerging phenomena for such an excellent figure-of-merit. Here we demonstrate hot polarons with narrow linewidth in $\mathrm{CH_{3}NH_{3}PbBr_{3}}$ nanowires, which originate from the interaction between trapped excitons and octahedra-twist phonons. The observation of hot polarons in photoluminescence without gain methods indicates the large interaction stre…
We demonstrate how to exploit long-cell polytypes of silicon carbide to achieve strong coupling between transverse phonon polaritons and zone folded longitudinal optical phonons. The resulting quasiparticles possess hybrid longitudinal and transverse nature, allowing them to be generated through electric currents while emitting radiation to the far field. We develop a microscopic theory predicting the existence of the hybrid longitudinal-transverse excitations. We then provide their first experimental observation by tuning the monopolar resonance of a nanopillar array through the folded longit…
We have theoretically and numerically studied nitride-based quantum well (QW) laser structures. More specifically, we have used a QW made with III-nitride where the width of the barrier region is large relative to the electron mean free path, and we have calculated the electron surface capture velocities by considering an electron flux which is captured into the well region. The process is assisted by the emission of the longitudinal optical phonons as predicted by the hybrid (HB) model. The results of surface capture velocities via the emission of HB phonons are compared to the emission of th…
We calculate the phonon, electron and magnon temperature profiles in yttrium iron garnet/platinum bilayers by diffusive theory with appropriate boundary conditions, in particular taking into account interfacial thermal resistances. Our calculations show that in thin film hybrids, the interface magnetic heat conductance qualitatively affects the magnon temperature. Based on published material parameters we assess the degree of non-equilibrium at the yttrium iron garnet/platinum interface. The magnitude of the spin Seebeck effect derived from this approach compares well with experimental results…
The coherent folded longitudinal acoustic phonons (FLAPs) in gold nanoparticles (NPs) imbedded InGaN/GaN sample have been studied using degenerate pump-probe technique. When the FLAPs are generated within the multiple quantum wells, the zone-center FLAPs extending from multiple quantum wells is detected in the GaN and sapphire substrate. Up to five phonon modes are clearly observed and they are well explained by the back and forth propagation of the signal phonon wave packet in the InGaN/GaN quantum wells. The results are consistent with similar measurements to GaAs/AlAs superlattices.
We investigate polariton-phonon hybrid excitations, which describe the collective excitations of emitter-photon polaritons and vibrational phonons, in a periodic array of vibrating two-level emitters interacting with waveguide photons. We demonstrate the emergence of an interaction-induced quasiperiodic structure caused by the interplay between phonon scatterings and waveguide-mediated long-range couplings. This quasiperiodicity fundamentally changes the excitation characteristics in the subradiant regime, which feature an appearance of topological edge states and a transition between ergodic …
We theoretically investigate magnon-phonon hybrid excitations in two-dimensional ferromagnets. The bulk bands of hybrid excitations, which are referred to as magnon-polarons, are analytically shown to be topologically nontrivial, possessing finite Chern numbers. We also show that the Chern numbers of magnon-polaron bands and the number of band-crossing lines can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. For experiments, we propose to use the thermal Hall conductivity as a probe of the finite Berry curvatures of magnon-polarons. Our results show that a simple ferromagnet on a square lattice…
Hybrid graphene-topological insulator (TI) devices were fabricated using a mechanical transfer method and studied via electronic transport. Devices consisting of bilayer graphene (BLG) under the TI Bi$_2$Se$_3$ exhibit differential conductance characteristics which appear to be dominated by tunneling, roughly reproducing the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ density of states. Similar results were obtained for BLG on top of Bi$_2$Se$_3$, with 10-fold greater conductance consistent with a larger contact area due to better surface conformity. The devices further show evidence of inelastic phonon-assisted tunneling p…
Hybrid spin-mechanical setups offer a versatile platform for quantum science and technology, but improving the spin-phonon as well as the spin-spin couplings of such systems remains a crucial challenge. Here, we propose and analyze an experimentally feasible and simple method for exponentially enhancing the spin-phonon, and the phonon-mediated spin-spin interactions in a hybrid spin-mechanical setup, using only \emph{ linear resources}. Through modulating the spring constant of the mechanical cantilever with a time-dependent pump, we can acquire a tunable and nonlinear (two-phonon) drive to th…
Quantum state transfer is crucial for quantum information processing and quantum computation. Here, we propose a hybrid optomechanical system capable of coupling a qubit, an optical mode and a mechanical oscillator. The displacement of the mechanical oscillator, due to radiation pressure, induces spatial variation in the cavity field, which in turn couples the qubit with phonon mode. This allows state transfer between the cavity mode and the qubit without an actual interaction between them. We present a scheme for the transitionless quantum state transfer based on the transitionless quantum dri…
The confinement of high frequency phonons approaching 1 GHz is demonstrated in phonon-trapping acoustic cavities at cryogenic temperatures using a low-coupled network approach. The frequency range is extended by nearly an order of magnitude, with excitation at greater than the 200$^{\text{th}}$ overtone achieved for the first time. Such high frequency operation reveals Rayleigh-type phonon scattering losses due to highly diluted lattice impurities and corresponding glass-like behaviour, with a maximum $Q_L\times f$ product of $8.6\times 10^{17}$ at 3.8K and $4\times10^{17}$ at 15mK. This sugge…
We investigate a hybrid quantum system where an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond is interfaced with a piezomagnetic superlattice that supports surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs). We show that the strong magnetic coupling between the collective spin waves in the NV spin ensemble and the quantized SPhPs can be realized, thanks to the subwavelength nature of the SPhPs and relatively long spin coherence times. The magnon-polariton coupling allows different modes of the SPhPs to be mapped and orthogonally stored in different spatial modes of excitation in the solid medium. Becaus…
Being used in optoelectronic devices as ultra-thin conductor-insulator junctions, detailed investigations are needed about how exactly h-BN and graphene hybridize. Here, we present a comprehensive ab initio study of hot carrier dynamics governed by electron-phonon scattering at the h-BN/graphene interface, using graphite (bulk), monolayer and bilayer graphene as benchmark materials. In contrast to monolayer graphene, all multilayer structures possess low-energy optical phonon modes that facilitate carrier thermalization. We find that the h-BN/graphene interface represents an exception with com…
Reminiscent of the bound character of a qubit's dynamics confined on the Bloch sphere, the observation of a Mollow triplet in the resonantly driven qubit fluorescence spectrum represents one of the founding signatures of Quantum Electrodynamics. Here we report on its observation in a hybrid spin-nanomechanical system, where a Nitro-gen Vacancy spin qubit is magnetically coupled to the vibrations of a Silicon Carbide nanowire. A resonant microwave field turns the originally parametric hybrid interac-tion into a resonant process, where acoustic phonons are now able to induce transitions between …
We investigate the anisotropic hybrid plasmon-SO phonon dispersion relations in monolayer and double-layer phosphorene systems located on the polar substrates, such as SiO2, h-BN and Al2O3. We calculate these hybrid modes with using the dynamical dielectric function in the RPA by considering the electron-electron interaction and long-range electric field generated by the substrate SO phonons via Frohlich interaction. In the long-wavelength limit, we obtain some analytical expressions for the hybrid plasmon-SO phonon dispersion relations which represent the behavior of these modes akin to the m…
Light-matter interaction in two-dimension photonic materials allows for confinement and control of free-space radiation on sub-wavelength scales. Most notably, the van der Waals heterostructure obtained by stacking graphene (G) and hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) can provide for hybrid hyperbolic plasmon phonon-polaritons (HP3). Here, we present a polariton diode effect and low-bias control of HP3 modes confined in G-hBN. Using broadband infrared synchrotron radiation coupled to a scattering-type near-field optical microscope, we launch HP3 waves over both hBN Reststrahlen bands and observe the …
Modification of optical phonon spectra in contacting nanoparticles as compared to the single ones is studied. Optical phonons in dielectric and semiconducting particles obey the Euclidean metric Klein-Fock-Gordon equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The latter is supposed to be solved numerically for manifolds of interpenetrating spheres. It is proposed to replace this problem with the simpler-to-solve coupled oscillators model (COM), where an oscillator is attributed to each phonon mode of a particle and the particles overlap leads to appearance of additional couplings for these oscil…
Localized excitons play a vital role in the optical response of monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides and can be exploited as single photon sources for quantum information technology. While the optical properties of such localized excitons are vastly studied, the ultrafast capture process of delocalized excitons into localized potentials is largely unexplored. We perform quantum kinetic calculations of exciton capture via acoustic and optical phonons showing that efficient capture takes place on an ultrafast time scale. The polaron formation in the low-temperature limit leads to highe…
In view of the ultrashort spatial and temporal scales involved, carrier capture processes in nanostructures are genuine quantum phenomena. To describe such processes, methods with different levels of approximations have been developed. By properly tailoring the Lindblad-based nonlinear single-particle density matrix equation provided by an alternative Markov approach, in this work we present a Lindblad superoperator to describe how the phonon-induced carrier capture affects the spatio-temporal quantum dynamics of a flying wave packet impinging on a quantum dot. We compare the results with non-…
We study theoretically the phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence processes in the hybrid qubit in silicon. Hybrid qubit behaves as a charge qubit when the detuning is close to zero and as spin qubit for large detuning values. It is realized starting from an electrostatically defined double quantum dot where three electrons are confined and manipulated through only electrical tuning. By employing a three-level effective model for the qubit and describing the environment bath as a series of harmonic oscillators in the thermal equilibrium states, we extract the relaxation and decoherence time…
Electron capture times due to the electron-electron (e-e), electron-hole (e-h) and electron-polar optical phonon (e-pop) interactions are calculated in the GaAs quantum well (QW) with electron and hole densities 10^11 cm^-2. The calculated capture times oscillate as a function of the QW width with the same period but with different amplitudes. The e-h capture time is two to four orders larger and the e-e capture time one to three orders larger than the e-pop capture time. The exceptions are the QW widths near resonance minima, where the e-e capture time is only 2-3 times larger and the e-h cap…
We study the hybrid excitations due to the coupling between surface optical phonons of a polar insulator substrate and plasmons in the valley-spin-polarized metal phase of silicene under an exchange field. We perform the calculations within the generalized random-phase approximation where the plasmon-phonon coupling is taken into account by the long-range Fr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$hlich interaction. Our investigation on two hybridized plasmon branches in different spin and valley subbands shows distinct behavior compared to the uncoupled case. Interestingly, in one valley, it is found that while th…
A three terminal nanoscale refrigeration concept based on a vibron-coupled quantum dot hybrid system coupled to two electronic reservoirs and a phonon bath is proposed and analyzed in detail. While investigating the non-trivial role of electron-phonon interactions, we show that, although they are well known to be detrimental from a general refrigeration perspective, can be engineered to favorably improve the trade-off between the cooling power (CP) and the coefficient-of-performance (COP). Furthermore, an additional improvement in the trade-off can be facilitated by applying a high electronic …
We theoretically study magnon-phonon hybrid excitations in a square lattice ferromagnet subjected to a magnetic field by varying the field direction. The bulk bands of hybrid excitations, which are referred to as magnon-polarons, are investigated by considering all three phonon modes: vertical phonon, transverse phonon, and longitudinal phonon. We show that the topological proprieties of three hybridizations are different in terms of the Berry curvature and the Chern numbers. We also find that the topological properties of the bands can be controlled by changing the direction of the magnetic f…
We calculate hybridization of plasmons and intrinsic optical phonons in graphene by using the self-consistent linear response formalism. We find that longitudinal plasmons (transverse magnetic modes) couple exclusively to transverse optical phonons, whereas graphene's transverse plasmons (transverse electric modes) couple only to longitudinal optical phonons. This mixing of polarizations is in contrast to the usual plasmon-phonon coupling in other systems. The resulting change in phonon frequencies increases (decreases) for transverse (longitudinal) phonons by increasing the concentration of c…
Interference between different possible paths lies at the heart of quantum physics. Such interference between coupled discrete and continuum states of a system can profoundly change its interaction with light as seen in Fano resonance. Here we present a unique many-body Fano system composed of a discrete phonon vibration and continuous electron-hole pair transitions in bilayer graphene. Mediated by the electron-phonon interactions, the excited state is described by new quanta of elementary excitations of hybrid phonon-exciton nature. Infrared absorption of the hybrid states exhibit characteris…
Hybrid quantum systems with inherently distinct degrees of freedom play a key role in many physical phenomena. Famous examples include cavity quantum electrodynamics, trapped ions, or electrons and phonons in the solid state. Here, a strong coupling makes the constituents loose their individual character and form dressed states. Apart from fundamental significance, hybrid systems can be exploited for practical purpose, noteworthily in the emerging field of quantum information control. A promising direction is provided by the combination between long-lived atomic states and the accessible elect…
Resonantly enhanced emission from the zero phonon line of a diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in single crystal diamond is demonstrated experimentally using a hybrid whispering gallery mode nanocavity. A 900 nm diameter ring nanocavity formed from gallium phosphide, whose sidewalls extend into a diamond substrate, is tuned onto resonance at low-temperature with the zero phonon line of a negatively charged NV center implanted near the diamond surface. When the nanocavity is on resonance, the zero phonon line intensity is enhanced by approximately an order of magnitude, and the spontaneous em…
We study the parametric interaction between a single Nitrogen-Vacancy electronic spin and a diamond mechanical resonator in which the spin is embedded. Coupling between spin and oscillator is achieved by crystal strain, which is generated upon actuation of the oscillator and which parametrically modulates the spins' energy splitting. Under coherent microwave driving of the spin, this parametric drive leads to a locking of the spin Rabi frequency to the oscillator mode in the megahertz range. Both the Rabi oscillation decay time and the inhomogeneous spin dephasing time increase by two orders o…
We investigate numerically the impact of the electron-phonon scattering on the optical properties of a perovskite material (CH3NH3PbI3). Using non-equilibrium Green functions formalism, we calculate the local density-of-states for several values of the electron-phonon scattering strength as well as in the case of ballistic transport. We report an Urbach-like penetration of the density-of-states in the bandgap due to scattering. The density-of-states expands deeper in the bandgap with the scattering strength. We determine the electronic current contributions relative to photon absorption and ph…
We present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study in conjunction with first principles calculations to investigate how the interaction of electrons with phonons in graphene is modified by the presence of Yb. We find that the transferred charges from Yb to the graphene layer hybridize with the graphene $π$ bands, leading to a strong enhancement of the electron-phonon interaction. Specifically, the electron-phonon coupling constant is increased by as much as a factor of 10 upon the introduction of Yb with respect to as grown graphene ($\leq$0.05). The observed coupling c…
