We study the properties of Dirac fermions on the surface of a topological insulator in the presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields. We provide an exact solution to this problem and demonstrate that, in contrast to their counterparts in graphene, these Dirac fermions allow relative tuning of the orbital and Zeeman effects of an applied magnetic field by a crossed electric field along the surface. We also elaborate and extend our earlier results on normal metal-magnetic film-normal metal (NMN) and normal metal-barrier-magnetic film (NBM) junctions of topological insulators [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 104}, 046403 (2010)]. For NMN junctions, we show that for Dirac fermions with Fermi velocity $v_F$, the transport can be controlled using the exchange field ${\mathcal J}$ of a ferromagnetic film over a region of width $d$. The conductance of such a junction changes from oscillatory to a monotonically decreasing function of $d$ beyond a critical ${\mathcal J}$ which leads to the possible realization of magnetic switches using these junctions. For NBM junctions with a potential barrier of width $d$ and potential $V_0$, we find that beyond a critical ${\mathcal J}$, the criteria of conductance maxima changes from $χ= e V_0 d/\hbar v_F = n π$ to $χ= (n+1/2)π$ for integer $n$. Finally, we compute the subgap tunneling conductance of a normal metal-magnetic film-superconductor (NMS) junctions on the surface of a topological insulator and show that the position of the peaks of the zero-bias tunneling conductance can be tuned using the magnetization of the ferromagnetic film. We point out that these phenomena have no analogs in either conventional two-dimensional materials or Dirac electrons in graphene and suggest experiments to test our theory.
We theoretically investigate the magnetotransport of Dirac fermions coupled with localized moments to understand the physical properties of the Dirac material EuMnBi$_2$. Using an interlayer hopping form, which simplifies the complicated interaction between the layers of Dirac fermions and the layers of magnetic moments in EuMnBi$_2$, the theory reproduces most of the features observed in this system. The hysteresis observed in EuMnBi$_2$ can be caused by the valley splitting that is induced by the spin-orbit coupling and the external magnetic field with the molecular field created by localize…
We investigate the Hall effect and the magnetoresistance of strongly correlated electron systems using the dynamical mean-field theory. We treat the low- and high-temperature limits analytically and explore some aspects of the intermediate-temperature regime numerically. We observe that a bipartite-lattice condition is responsible for the high-temperature result $σ_{xy}\sim 1/T^2$ obtained by various authors, whereas the general behavior is $σ_{xy}\sim 1/T$, as for the longitudinal conductivity. We find that Kohler's rule is neither obeyed at high nor at intermediate temperatures.
We report on studies of the magnetoresistance in strongly correlated 2D electron system in Si in the critical regime, in the close vicinity of the 2D metal-insulator transition. We performed self-consistent comparison of our data with solutions of two equations of the cross-over renormalization group (CRG) theory which describes temperature evolutions of the resistivity and interaction parameters for 2D electron system. We found a good agreement between the ρ(T,B) data and the RG theory in a wide range of the in-plane fields, 0-2.1 T. This agreement supports the interpretation of the observed …

We investigated the nature of transport and magnetic properties in SrIr0.5Ru0.5O3, (SIRO) which has characteristics intermediate between a correlated non-Fermi liquid state and an itinerant Fermi liquid state, by growing perovskite thin films on various substrates (SrTiO3 (001), (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2TaAlO6)0.7 (001) and LaAlO3 (001)). We observed systematic variation of underlying substrate dependent metal-to-insulator transition temperatures at 80 K on SrTiO3, 90 K on (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2TaAlO6)0.7 and 100 K on LaAlO3) in resistivity. Resistivity in the metallic region follows a T3/2 power law; whereas …
Novel topological phenomena are anticipated for three-dimensional (3D) Dirac electrons. The magnetotransport properties of cubic ${\rm Sr_{3}PbO}$ antiperovskite, theoretically proposed to be a 3D massive Dirac electron system, are studied. The measurements of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and Hall resistivity indicate the presence of a low density ($\sim 1 \times 10^{18}$ ${\rm cm^{-3}}$) of holes with an extremely small cyclotron mass of 0.01-0.06$m_{e}$. The magnetoresistance $Δρ_{xx}(B)$ is linear in magnetic field $B$ with the magnitude independent of temperature. These results are fully…
We show that applying strain on half-doped manganites makes it possible to tune the system to the proximity of a metal-insulator transition and thereby generate a colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) response. This phase competition not only allows control of CMR in ferromagnetic metallic manganites but can be used to generate CMR response in otherwise robust insulators at half-doping. Further, from our realistic microscopic model of strain and magnetotransport calculations within the Kubo formalism, we demonstrate a striking result of strain engineering that, under tensile strain, a ferromagnetic…
An important challenge in the field of topological materials is to carefully disentangle the electronic transport contribution of the topological surface states from that of the bulk. For Bi$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulator samples, bulk single crystals and thin films exposed to air during fabrication processes are known to be bulk conducting, with the chemical potential in the bulk conduction band. For Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy, we combine structural characterization (transmission electron microscopy), chemical surface analysis as function of time (x-ray photoelec…
We study the magnetotransport in a minimal holographic setup of a metal-insulator transition in two spatial dimensions. Some generic features are obtained without referring to the non-linear details of the holographic theory. The temperature dependence of resistivity is found to be well scaled with a single parameter $T_0$, which approaches zero at some critical charge density $ρ_c$, and increases as a power law $T_0\sim|ρ-ρ_c|^{1/2}$ both in metallic $(ρ>ρ_c)$ and insulating $(ρ<ρ_c)$ regions in the vicinity of the transition. Similar features also happen by changing the disorder strength as …
The surface of a 3D topological insulator is conducting and the topologically nontrivial nature of the surface states is observed in experiments. It is the aim of this paper to review and analyze experimental observations with respect to the magnetotransport in Bi-based 3D topological insulators, as well as the superconducting transport properties of hybrid structures consisting of superconductors and these topological insulators. The helical spin-momentum coupling of the surface state electrons becomes visible in quantum corrections to the conductivity and magnetoresistance oscillations. An a…
Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ has been proposed to be topologically non-trivial in nature. However, evidence of its non-trivial behavior is still unexplored. We report the growth and magneto-transport study of Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ thin films, revealing for the first time the contribution of two-dimensional (2D) topological surface states. We observe exceptional non-saturated linear magnetoresistance which results from Dirac fermions inhabiting the lowest Landau level in the quantum limit. The transverse magnetoresistance changes from a semi-classical weak-field $B^{2}$ dependence to a high-fiel…
We report that a perpendicular magnetic field introduces an anomalous interaction correction, $δσ$, to the static conductivity of doped graphene in the ballistic regime. The correction implies that the magnetoresistance, $δρ_{xx}$ scales inversely with temperature $δρ_{xx}(T) \propto 1/T$ in a parametrically large interval. When the disorder is scalar-like, the $\propto 1/T$ behavior is the leading contribution in the crossover between diffusive regime exhibiting weak localization and quantum magnetooscillations. The behavior originates from the field-induced breaking of the chiral symmetry of…
We study a three-dimensional chiral second order topological insulator (SOTI) subject to a magnetic field. Via its gauge field, the applied magnetic field influences the electronic motion on the lattice, and via the Zeeman effect, the field influences the electronic spin. We compare two approaches to the problem: an effective surface theory, and a full lattice calculation. The surface theory predicts a massive Dirac spectrum on each of the gapped surfaces, giving rise to Landau levels once the surfaces are pierced by magnetic flux. The surface theory qualitatively agrees with our lattice calcu…
SmB6 has been predicted and verified as a prototype of topological Kondo insulators (TKIs). Here we report longitudinal magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient measurements on co-sputtered nanocrystalline SmB6 films and try to find possible signatures of their topological properties. The magnetoresistance (MR) at 2 K is positive and linear (LPMR) at low field and becomes negative and quadratic at higher field. While the negative part is known from the reduction of the hybridization gap due to Zeeman splitting, the positive dependence is similar to what has been observed in other topological ins…
We have studied the electric and thermal response of two-dimensional Dirac-fermions in a quantizing magnetic field in the presence of localized disorder. The electric and heat current operators in the presence of magnetic field are derived. The self-energy due to impurities is calculated self-consistently, and depends strongly on the frequency and field strength, resulting in asymmetric peaks in the density of states at the Landau level energies, and small islands connecting them. The Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations remain periodic in 1/B, in spite of the distinct quantization of quasiparticle …
We report the temperature and magnetic field dependence of transport properties in epitaxial films of the manganite La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ in the overdoped region of the phase diagram for $x > 0.5$, where a charge--ordered (CO) and an antiferromagnetic (AF) phase are present. Resistivity, magnetoresistance and angular dependence of magnetoresistance were measured in the temperature interval $4.2 ~\mathrm{K} < T < 300 ~\mathrm{K}$, for three concentrations $x = 0.52, 0.58$ and $0.75$ and in magnetic fields up to 5 T. The semiconductor/insulator--like behavior in zero field was observed in …
A comparative study is made on the metal-insulator transition of Dirac fermions in the honeycomb and π-flux Hubbard models at half filling by means of the variational cluster approximation and cluster dynamical impurity approximation. Paying particular attention to the choice of the geometry of solver clusters and the inclusion of particle-bath sites, we show that the direct transition from the Dirac semimetallic state to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator state occurs in these models, and therefore, the spin liquid phase is absent in the intermediate region, in agreement with recent quantum…
Magnetotransport in 2DES's formed in Si-MOSFET's and Si/SiGe quantum wells at low temperatures is reported. Metallic temperature dependence of resistivity is observed for the n-Si/SiGe sample even in a parallel magnetic field of 9T, where the spins of electrons are expected to be polarized completely. Correlation between the spin polarization and minima in the diagonal resistivity observed by rotating the samples for various total strength of the magnetic field is also investigated.
We provide a theory for the tunneling conductance $G(V)$ of Dirac Fermions on the surface of a topological insulator as measured by a spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope tip for low bias voltages $V$. We show that $G(V)$ exhibits an unconventional dependence on the direction of magnetization of the tip and can be used to measure the magnitude of the local out-of-plane spin orientation of the Dirac Fermions on the surface. We also demonstrate that if the in-plane rotational symmetry on the surface of the topological insulator is broken by an external field, then $G(V)$ acquires a depen…
Kondo insulators are primary candidates in the search for strongly correlated topological quantum phases, which may host topological order, fractionalization, and non-Abelian statistics. Within some Kondo insulators, the hybridization gap is predicted to protect a nontrivial topological invariant and to harbor emergent heavy Dirac fermion surface modes. We use high-energy-resolution spectroscopic imaging in real and momentum space on the Kondo insulator, SmB$_6$. On cooling through $T^*_Δ\approx$ 35 K we observe the opening of an insulating gap that expands to $Δ\approx$ 10 meV at 2 K. Within …
The interaction-driven quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator has been sought for a long time in a Dirac semimetal with linear band touching points at the Fermi level. By combining exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group, and analytical methods, we study a spinless fermion system on the checkerboard lattice with two fold rotational symmetry, which realizes two Dirac band touching points in the absence of interaction. At weak coupling, the Dirac semimetal is stable. At a finite density-density repulsive interaction, we analyze possible symmetry broken states, and find that a…
We study the thermal and electric transport of a fluid of interacting Dirac fermions as they arise in single-layer graphene. We include Coulomb interactions, a dilute density of charged impurities and the presence of a magnetic field to describe both the static and the low frequency response as a function of temperature T and chemical potential mu. In the critical regime mu << T where both bands above and below the Dirac point contribute to transport we find pronounced deviations from Fermi liquid behavior, universal, collision-dominated values for transport coefficients and a cyclotron resona…
We report growth and characterization of epitaxial $α$-Sn thin films grown on CdTe(111)B. Noninvasive techniques verify the film's pseduomorphic growth before fabrication of magnetotransport devices, overcoming ex-situ obstacles on uncapped films for measurement in the Hall bar geometry. We identify a transition to metallic behavior at low temperature with large magnetoresistance, high mobility, and quantum oscillations tentatively suggesting an n-type Dirac semimetallic channel. A parallel p-type dopant channel with high carrier density is seen to dominate at thinner film thicknesses. Careful…
We report the magnetoresistance measurements of a highly oriented La0.55Ho0.15Sr0.3MnOz film on LaAlO3 substrate. The film has a metal-insulator transition around 200 K and shows pronounced thermomagnetic history effect in its transport properties below 45 K at 7 Tesla. The irreversibility temperature shifts to lower temperatures when the field is reduced. This behaviour is opposite to the thermomagnetic history effect observed in the magnetisation. At 2.8 K one also observes a significant hysteresis in the resistance versus field curve. We propose a qualitative explanation for these observati…
We report an experimental study of the magnetic order and electronic structure and transport of the layered pnictide EuMnSb$_2$, performed using neutron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and magnetotransport measurements. We find that the Eu and Mn sublattices display antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Eu} = 21(1)$ K and $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Mn} = 350(2)$ K respectively. The former can be described by an A-type AFM structure with the Eu spins aligned along the $c$ axis (an in-plane direction), whereas the latter has a C-type AFM structure w…
Artificial superlattices designed with ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 insulating layer and ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 layer were grown on (100) SrTiO3 substrates. The magnetotransport properties were measured with the current perpendicular to the plane geometry. An increase in magnetoresistance (MR), with no significant low field effect, was observed as the number of ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 layer thickness increases even up to 9 unit cells. For example, the superlattice [(Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3)10(Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3)9]25 shows 35 % MR at 100 K, though the Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 film was a robust insula…
A magnetotransport study in magnetically doped (Cd,Mn)Te 2D quantum wells reveals an apparent metal-insulator transition as well as an anomalous intermediate phase just on its metallic side. This phase is characterized by colossal magnetoresistance-like phenomena, which are assigned to the phase separation of the electron fluid and the associated emergence of ferromagnetic bubbles.
We examine magnetotransport in a holographic Dirac-Born-Infeld model, taking into account the effects of backreaction on the geometry. The theory we consider includes axionic scalars, introduced to break translational symmetry and generate momentum dissipation. The generic structure of the DC conductivity matrix for these theories is extremely rich, and is significantly more complex than that obtained in the probe approximation. We find new classes of black brane solutions, including geometries that exhibit Lifshitz scaling and hyperscaling violation, and examine their implications on the tran…
We report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on topological insulator (TI) TlBi1-xSbxTe2 which is bulk insulating at 0.5 < x < 0.9 and undergoes a metal-insulator-metal transition with the Sb content x. We found that this transition is characterized by a systematic hole doping with increasing x, which results in the Fermi-level crossings of the bulk conduction and valence bands at x~ 0 and x~1, respectively. The Dirac point of the topological surface state is gradually isolated from the valence-band edge, accompanied by a sign reversal of Dirac carriers. We also found that …
We discuss a non-fermi liquid gapless metallic surface state of the topological band insulator. It has an odd number of gapless Dirac fermions coupled to a non-compact U(1) gauge field. This can be viewed as a vortex dual to the conventional Dirac fermion surface state. This surface duality is a reflection of a bulk dual description discussed recently for the gauged topological insulator. All the other known surface states can be conveniently accessed from the dual Dirac liquid, including the surface quantum hall state, the Fu-Kane superconductor, the gapped symmetric topological order and the…
The lecture introduces a reader to the relatively young field of physics of strongly interacting and disordered 2D electron system, in particular, to the phenomena of the metallic conduction and the apparent metal-insulator transition in 2D. The paper briefly overviews the experimental data on the electron transport, magnetotransport, spin-magnetization in 2D, and on the electron-electron interaction effects.
Magnetotransport of superconducting Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4+y} (NdCeCuO) films is studied in the temperature interval 0.3-30 K. The microscopic theory of the quantum corrections to conductivity, both in the Cooper and in the diffusion channels, qualitatively describes the main features of the experiment including the negative magnetoresistance in the high field limit. Comparison with the model of the field-induced superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is included and a crossover between these two theoretical approaches is discussed.
Three-dimensional topological insulators are characterized by insulating bulk state and metallic surface state involving Dirac fermions that behave as massless relativistic particles. These Dirac fermions are responsible for achieving a number of novel and exotic quantum phenomena in the topological insulators and for their potential applications in spintronics and quantum computations. It is thus essential to understand the electron dynamics of the Dirac fermions, i.e., how they interact with other electrons, phonons and disorders. Here we report super-high resolution angle-resolved photoemis…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on the (111) surface of the topological crystalline insulator SnTe. Distinct from a pair of Dirac-cone surface states across the X_bar point of the surface Brillouin zone on the (001) surface, we revealed two types of Dirac-cone surface states each centered at the G_bar and M_bar points, which originate from the bulk-band inversion at the L points. We also found that the energy location of the Dirac point and the Dirac velocity are different from each other. This ARPES experiment demonstrates the surface states on different cr…
We reconsider the problem of surface states spectrum in type One Dirac metals. We find that the surface states, despite being gapped, always form branches terminating at Dirac points. Furthermore, we consider evolution of the surface states in the case, when rotational symmetry is broken, and as a result, Dirac points are gapped. We find, that in this case, special role is played by mirror symmetry relative to the plane connecting Dirac points. When it is present, the resulting gapped state is a topological crystalline insulator, which surface spectrum can contain either one or three Dirac poi…
We predict a new class of topological crystalline insulators (TCI) in the anti-perovskite material family with the chemical formula A$_3$BX. Here the nontrivial topology arises from band inversion between two $J=3/2$ quartets, which is described by a generalized Dirac equation for a "Dirac octet". Our work suggests that anti-perovskites are a promising new venue for exploring the cooperative interplay between band topology, crystal symmetry and electron correlation.
We report the first experimental results of the magnetoresistance, Hall effect, and quantum Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations on single crystals of ZrTe, which was recently predicted to be a new type of topological semimetal hosting both triply degenerate crossing points and Weyl fermion state. The analysis of Hall effect and quantum oscillations indicate that ZrTe is a multiband system with low carrier density, high carrier mobility, small cross-sectional area of Fermi surface, and light cyclotron effective mass, as observed in many topological semimetals. Meanwhile, the angular dependence of th…
Bloch theory describes the electronic states in crystals whose energies are distributed as bands over the Brillouin zone. The electronic states corresponding to a (few) isolated energy band(s) thus constitute a vector bundle. The topological properties of these vector bundles provide new characteristics of the corresponding electronic phases. We review some of these properties in the case of (topological) insulators and semi-metals.
The surface of a topological insulator is a closed two dimensional manifold. The surface states are described by the Dirac Hamiltonian in curved two dimensional spaces. For a slab-like sample with a magnetic field perpendicular to its top and bottom surfaces, there are chiral states delocalized on the four side faces. These "chiral sheets" carry both charge and spin currents. In strong magnetic fields the quantized charge Hall effect ($\s_{xy}=(2n+1)e^2/h$) will coexist with spin Hall effect.
This article reviews recent results of magnetotransport and magnetization measurements performed on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) and single crystalline Kish graphite samples. Both metal-insulator and insulator-metal transitions driven by magnetic field applied perpendicular to the basal planes of graphite were found and discussed in the light of relevant theories. The results provide evidence for the existence of localized superconducting domains in HOPG even at room temperature, as well as an interplay between superconducting and ferromagnetic correlations. We also present experi…
We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in BaMnBi2 single crystals. BaMnBi2 is a layered bad metal with highly anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase, small cyclotronmass, and the first-principles band structure calculations indicate the presence of Dirac fermions in Bi square nets. Quantum oscillations in the Hall channel suggest the presence of both electron and hole pockets, whereas Dirac and parabolic states coexist at the Fermi level.
We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 single crystals. YbMnBi2 is a layered material with anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase and small cyclotron mass indicate the presence of quasi two dimensional Dirac fermions. Quantum oscillations in Hall resistivity suggest the presence of both electron and hole parts of the Fermi surface whereas the Berry phase suggests spin-orbit coupling.
We report the magnetoresistance (MR), Hall effect, and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect studies of the single crystals of tungsten carbide, WC, which is predicted to be a new type of topological semimetal with triply degenerate nodes. With the magnetic field rotated in the plane perpendicular to the current, WC shows field induced metal to insulator like transition and large nonsaturating quadratic MR at low temperature. As the magnetic field parallel to the current, a pronounced negative longitudinal MR only can be observed when the current flows along the certain direction. Hall effect indic…
We propose a platform for flat Chern band by subjecting two-dimensional Dirac materials -- such as graphene and topological insulator thin films -- to a periodic magnetic field, which can be created by the vortex lattice of a type-II superconductor. As a generalization of the $n=0$ Landau level, the flat band of Dirac fermion under a nonuniform magnetic field remains at zero energy, exactly dispersionless and topologically protected, while its local density of states is spatially modulated due to the magnetic field variation. In the presence of short-range repulsion, we find fractional Chern i…
After the theoretical prediction that SmB$_6$ is a topological Kondo insulator, there has been an explosion of studies on the SmB$_6$ surface. However, there is not yet an agreement on even the most basic quantities such as the surface carrier density and mobility. In this paper, we carefully revisit Corbino disk magnetotransport studies to find those surface transport parameters. We first show that subsurface cracks exist in the SmB$_6$ crystals, arising both from surface preparation and during the crystal growth. We provide evidence that these hidden subsurface cracks are additional conducti…
We explore the ultrafast reflectivity response from photo-generated coupled phonon-surface Dirac plasmons in Sb$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulators several quintuple layers thick. The transient coherent phonon spectra obtained at different time frames exhibit a Fano-like asymmetric line shape of the $A^2_{1g}$ mode, which is attributed to quantum interference between continuum-like coherent Dirac-plasmons and phonons. By analyzing the time-dependent asymmetric line shape using the two-temperature model (TTM), it was determined that a Fano-like resonance persisted up to $\approx$1 ps after photo-e…
Real and complex Clifford bundles and Dirac operators defined on them are considered. By using the index theorems of Dirac operators, table of topological invariants is constructed from the Clifford chessboard. Through the relations between K-theory groups, Grothendieck groups and symmetric spaces, the periodic table of topological insulators and superconductors is obtained. This gives the result that the periodic table of real and complex topological phases is originated from the Clifford chessboard and index theorems.
Dirac semimetal is a class of semi-metallic phase protected by certain types of crystalline symmetries, and its low-energy effective Hamiltonian is described by Dirac equations in three dimensions (3D). Despite of various theoretical studies, theories that describe the topological nature of Dirac semimetals have not been well established. In this work, we define a topological invariant for 3D Dirac semimetals by establishing a mapping between a 3D Dirac semimetal and a topological crystalline insulator in four dimension (4D). We demonstrate this scheme by constructing a tight-binding model for…
CaFeAsF is an iron-based superconductor parent compound whose Fermi surface is quasi-two dimensional, composed of Dirac-electron and Schrödinger-hole cylinders elongated along the $c$ axis. We measured the longitudinal and Hall resistivities in CaFeAsF with the electrical current in the $ab$ plane in magnetic fields up to 45 T applied along the $c$ axis and obtained the corresponding conductivities via tensor inversion. We found that both the longitudinal and Hall conductivities approached zero above $\sim$40 T as the temperature was lowered to 0.4 K. Our analysis indicates that the Landau-lev…
We study the effect of the long-range Coulomb interaction in $j=3/2$ Dirac electrons in cubic crystals with the $O_h$ symmetry, which serves as an effective model for antiperovskite topological crystalline insulators. The renormalization group analysis reveals three fixed points that are Lorentz invariant, rotationally invariant, and $O_h$ invariant. Among them, the Lorentz- and $O_h$-invariant fixed points are stable in the low-energy limit while the rotationally invariant fixed point is unstable. The existence of a stable $O_h$-invariant fixed point of Dirac fermions with finite velocity ani…
We use Dirac quantization of flux to study fractional charges and axion angles θin interacting topological insulators with gapless surface modes protected by time-reversal symmetry. In interacting topological insulators, there are two types of fractional axion angle due to conventional odd and nontrivial even flux quantization at the boundary. On even flux quantization in a gapped time reversal invariant system, we show that there is a halved quarter fractional quantum Hall effect on the surface with Hall conductance of p/4q e2/2h with p and q odd integers. The gapless surface modes can be cha…
