We study Lévy walks in quenched disordered one-dimensional media, with scatterers spaced according to a long-tailed distribution. By analyzing the scaling relations for the random-walk probability and for the resistivity in the equivalent electric problem, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the mean square displacement as a function of the exponent characterizing the scatterers distribution. We demonstrate that in quenched media different average procedures can display different asymptotic behavior. In particular, we estimate the moments of the displacement averaged over processes starting from scattering sites, in analogy with recent experiments. Our results are compared with numerical simulations, with excellent agreement.
We elucidate the effects of chiral quenched disorder on the scaling properties of pure systems by considering a reduced model that is a variant of the quenched disordered cubic anisotropic O(N) model near its second order phase transition. A generic short-ranged Gaussian disorder distribution is considered. For distributions not invariant under spatial inversion ({hence chiral}), the scaling exponents are found to depend continuously on a model parameter that describes the extent of inversion symmetry breaking. Experimental and phenomenological implications of our results are discussed.
The roughening behavior of a one-dimensional interface fluctuating under quenched disorder growth is examined while keeping an anchored boundary. The latter introduces detailed balance conditions which allows for a thorough analysis of equilibrium aspects at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. It is found that the interface roughens linearly with the substrate size only in the vicinity of special disorder realizations. Otherwise, it remains stiff and tilted.
We present the microscopic equation of growing interface with quenched noise for the Tang and Leschhorn model [L. H. Tang and H. Leschhorn, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 45}, R8309 (1992)]. The evolution equation for the height, the mean height, and the roughness are reached in a simple way. An equation for the interface activity density (or free sites density) as function of time is obtained. The microscopic equation allows us to express these equations into two contributions: the diffusion and the substratum contributions. All these equations shows the strong interplay between the diffusion and the subs…
We develop the hydrodynamic theory for number conserving asymmetric exclusion processes with short-range random quenched disordered hopping rates, which is one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi- Zhang (KPZ) equation with quenched columnar disorder. We show that when the system is away from half-filling, the universal spatio-temporal scaling of the density fluctuations is indistinguishable from its pure counterpart, with the model belonging to the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. In contrast, close to half-filling, the quenched disorder is relevant, leading to a new universality …
This work focuses on quantitative representation of transport in systems with quenched disorder. Explicit mapping of the quenched trap model to continuous time random walk is presented. Linear temporal transformation: $t\to t/Λ^{1/α}$ for transient process on translationally invariant lattice, in the sub-diffusive regime, is sufficient for asymptotic mapping. Exact form of the constant $Λ^{1/α}$ is established. Disorder averaged position probability density function for quenched trap model is obtained and analytic expressions for the diffusion coefficient and drift are provided.
We revisit the effects of short-ranged random quenched disorder on the universal scaling properties of the classical $N$-vector model with cubic anisotropy. We set up the nonconserved relaxational dynamics of the model, and study the universal dynamic scaling near the second order phase transition. We extract the critical exponents and the dynamic exponent in a one-loop dynamic renormalisation group calculation with short-ranged isotropic disorder. We show that the dynamics near a critical point is generically slower when the quenched disorder is relevant than when it is not, independent of wh…
Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) represent a counterpart in non-equilibrium quantum time evolution of thermal phase transitions at equilibrium, where real time becomes analogous to a control parameter such as temperature. In quenched quantum systems, recently the occurrence of DQPTs has been demonstrated, both with theory and experiment, to be intimately connected to changes of topological properties. Here, we contribute to broadening the systematic understanding of this relation between topology and DQPTs to multi-orbital and disordered systems. Specifically, we provide a detailed …
We introduce a model for fractures in quenched disordered media. This model has a deterministic extremal dynamics, driven by the energy function of a network of springs (Born Hamiltonian). The breakdown is the result of the cooperation between the external field and the quenched disorder. This model can be considered as describing the low temperature limit for crack propagation in solids. To describe the memory effects in this dynamics, and then to study the resistance properties of the system we realized some numerical simulations of the model. The model exhibits interesting geometric and dyn…
The $XY$ model with four-body quenched disordered interactions and its discrete $p$-clock proxy is studied on bipartite random graphs by means of the cavity method. The phase diagrams are determined from the ordered case to the spin-glass case. Dynamic, spinodal and thermodynamic transition lines are identified by analyzing free energy, complexity and tree reconstruction functions as temperature and disorder are changed. The study of the convergence of the $p$-clock model to the $XY$ model is performed down to temperature low enough to determine all relevant transition points for different con…
Diffusion in the quenched trap model is investigated with an approach we call weak subordination breaking. We map the problem onto Brownian motion and show that the operational time is ${\cal S}_α= \sum_{x=-\infty} ^\infty (n_x)^α$ where $n_x$ is the visitation number at site $x$ . In the limit of zero temperature we recover the renormalization group (RG) solution found by Monthus. Our approach is an alternative to RG capable of dealing with any disorder strength.
We study the relaxation for growing interfaces in quenched disordered media. We use a directed percolation depinning model introduced by Tang and Leschhorn for 1+1-dimensions. We define the two-time autocorrelation function of the interface height C(t',t) and its Fourier transform. These functions depend on the difference of times t-t' for long enough times, this is the steady-state regime. We find a two-step relaxation decay in this regime. The long time tail can be fitted by a stretched exponential relaxation function. The relaxation time is proportional to the characteristic distance of the…
We investigate numerically and theoretically the effect of spatial disorder on two-dimensional split-step discrete-time quantum walks with two internal "coin" states. Spatial disorder can lead to Anderson localization, inhibiting the spread of quantum walks, putting them at a disadvantage against their diffusively spreading classical counterparts. We find that spatial disorder of the most general type, i.e., position-dependent Haar random coin operators, does not lead to Anderson localization but to a diffusive spread instead. This is a delocalization, which happens because disorder places the…
We study, using Monte Carlo simulations, the steady state properties of a system of particles interacting via hard core exclusion and moving in a discrete flashing disordered ratchet potential. Quenched disorder is introduced by breaking the periodicity of the ratchet potential through changing shape of the potential across randomly chosen but fixed periods. We show that the effects of quenched disorder can be broadly classified as strong or weak with qualitatively different behaviour of the steady state particle flux as a function of overall particle density. We further show that most of the …
We present the microscopic equation of growing interface with quenched noise for the Tang and Leschhorn model [{\em Phys. Rev.} {\bf A 45}, R8309 (1992)]. The evolution equations for the mean heigth and the roughness are reached in a simple way. Also, an equation for the interface activity density (i.e. interface density of free sites) as function of time is obtained. The microscopic equation allows us to express these equations in two contributions: the diffusion and the substratum one. All the equation shows the strong interplay between both contributions in the dynamics. A macroscopic evolu…
We examine the influence of quenched disorder on the flocking transition of dense polar active matter. We consider incompressible systems of active particles with aligning interactions under the effect of either quenched random forces or random dilution. The system displays a continuous disorder-order (flocking) transition, and the associated scaling behavior is described by a new universality class which is controlled by a quenched Navier-Stokes fixed point. We determine the critical exponents through a perturbative renormalization group analysis. We show that the two forms of quenched disord…
We briefly review the Ising model with uncorrelated, quenched random-site or random-bond disorder, which has been controversial in both two and four dimensions. In these dimensions, the leading exponent alpha, which characterizes the specific-heat critical behaviour, vanishes and no Harris prediction for the consequences of quenched disorder can be made. In the two-dimensional case, the controversy is between the strong universality hypothesis which maintains that the leading critical exponents are the same as in the pure case and the weak universality hypothesis, which favours dilution-depend…
The Ising and BEG models critical behavior is analyzed in 2D and 3D by means of a renormalization group scheme on small clusters made of a few lattice cells. Different kinds of cells are proposed for both ordered and disordered model cases. In particular, cells preserving a possible antiferromagnetic ordering under decimation allow for the determination of the Néel critical point and its scaling indices. These also provide more reliable estimates of the Curie fixed point than those obtained using cells preserving only the ferromagnetic ordering. In all studied dimensions, the present procedure…
We study the effect of quenched spatial disorder on the steady states of driven systems of interacting particles. Two sorts of models are studied: disordered drop-push processes and their generalizations, and the disordered asymmetric simple exclusion process. We write down the exact steady-state measure, and consequently a number of physical quantities explicitly, for the drop-push dynamics in any dimensions for arbitrary disorder. We find that three qualitatively different regimes of behaviour are possible in 1-$d$ disordered driven systems. In the Vanishing-Current regime, the steady-state …
Recent high-precision results for the critical exponent of the localization length at the integer quantum Hall (IQH) transition differ considerably between experimental ($ν_\text{exp} \approx 2.38$) and numerical ($ν_\text{CC} \approx 2.6$) values obtained in simulations of the Chalker-Coddington (CC) network model. We revisit the arguments leading to the CC model and consider a more general network with geometric (structural) disorder. Numerical simulations of this new model lead to the value $ν\approx 2.37$ in very close agreement with experiments. We argue that in a continuum limit the geom…
We make a review of the two principal models that allows to explain the imbibition of fluid in porous media. These models, that belong to the directed percolation depinning (DPD) universality class, where introduced simultaneously by the Tang and Leschhorn [Phys. Rev A 45, R8309 (1992)] and Buldyrev et al. [Phys. Rev. A 45, R8313 (1992)] and reviewed by Braunstein et al. [J. Phys. A 32, 1801 (1999); Phys. Rev. E 59, 4243 (1999)]. Even these models have been classified in the same universality class than the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 889, (1986)] with quenched noise (QK…
We consider the equilibrium behavior of fluids imbibed in disordered mesoporous media, including their gas-liquid critical point when present. Our starting points are on the one hand a description of the fluid/solid-matrix system as a quenched-annealed mixture and on the other hand the Hierarchical Reference Theory (HRT) developed by A. Parola and L. Reatto to cope with density fluctuations on all length scales. The formalism combines liquid-state statistical mechanics and the theory of systems in the presence of quenched disorder. A straightforward implementation of the HRT to the quenched-an…
A correlated random walk approach to diffusion is applied to the disordered nonoverlapping Lorentz gas. By invoking the Lu-Torquato theory for chord-length distributions in random media [J. Chem. Phys. 98, 6472 (1993)], an analytic expression for the diffusion constant in arbitrary number of dimensions d is obtained. The result corresponds to an Enskog-like correction to the Boltzmann prediction, being exact in the dilute limit, and better or nearly exact in comparison to renormalized kinetic theory predictions for all allowed densities in d=2,3. Extensive numerical simulations were also perfo…
We study the scaling laws of diffusion in two-dimensional media with long-range correlated disorder through exact enumeration of random walks. The disordered medium is modelled by percolation clusters with correlations decaying with the distance as a power law, $r^{-a}$, generated with the improved Fourier filtering method. To characterize this type of disorder, we determine the percolation threshold $p_{\text c}$ by investigating cluster-wrapping probabilities. At $p_{\text c}$, we estimate the (sub-diffusive) walk dimension $d_{\text w}$ for different correlation exponents $a$. Above $p_{\te…
The asymptotic probability distribution for a Brownian particle wandering in a 2D plane with random traps to enclose the algebraic area A by time t is calculated using the instanton technique.
We extend to quenched disordered systems the variational scheme for real space renormalization group calculations that we recently introduced for homogeneous spin Hamiltonians. When disorder is present our approach gives access to the flow of the renormalized Hamiltonian distribution, from which one can compute the critical exponents if the correlations of the renormalized couplings retain finite range. Key to the variational approach is the bias potential found by minimizing a convex functional in statistical mechanics. This potential reduces dramatically the Monte Carlo relaxation time in la…
We study a one-dimensional class of reaction-diffusion models on a $10-$parameters manifold. The equations of motion of the correlation functions close on this manifold. We compute exactly the long-time behaviour of the density and correlation functions for {\it quenched} disordered systems. The {\it quenched} disorder consists of disconnected domains of reaction. We first consider the case where the disorder comprizes a superposition, with different probabilistic weights, of finite segments, with {\it periodic boundary conditions}. We then pass to the case of finite segments with {\it open bo…
We study the first passage dynamics of an ageing stochastic process in the continuous time random walk (CTRW) framework. In such CTRW processes the test particle performs a random walk, in which successive steps are separated by random waiting times distributed in terms of the waiting time probability density function $ψ(t) \simeq t^{-1-α}$) ($0\le α\le 2$). An ageing stochastic process is defined by the explicit dependence of its dynamic quantities on the ageing time $t_a$, the time elapsed between its preparation and the start of the observation. Subdiffusive ageing CTRWs describe systems su…
An important prediction of Mode-Coupling-Theory (MCT) is the relationship between the power- law decay exponents in the β regime. In the original structural glass context this relationship follows from the MCT equations that are obtained making rather uncontrolled approximations and λ has to be treated like a tunable parameter. It is known that a certain class of mean-field spin-glass models is exactly described by MCT equations. In this context, the physical meaning of the so called parameter exponent λ has recently been unveiled, giving a method to compute it exactly in a static framework. I…
Non-Gaussian diffusion has been intensively studied in recent years, which reflects the dynamic heterogeneity in the disordered media. The recent study on the non-Gaussian diffusion in a static disordered landscape suggests novel phenomena due to the quenched disorder. In this work, we further investigate the random walk in this landscape under various effective temperature $μ$, which continuously modulates the dynamic heterogeneity. We show in the long time limit, the trap dynamics on the landscape is equivalent to the quenched trap model, in which sub-diffusion appears for $μ<1$. The non-Gau…
An algebraic derivation is presented which yields the exact solution of the mean first-passage and mean residence times of a one-dimensional asymmetric random walk for quenched disorder. Two models of disorder are analytically treated. Both, absorbing-absorbing and reflecting-absorbing boundaries are considered. Particularly, the interplay between asymmetry and disorder is studied.
We study the persistent random walk of photons on a one-dimensional lattice of random transmittances. Transmittances at different sites are assumed independent, distributed according to a given probability density $f(t)$. Depending on the behavior of $f(t)$ near $t=0$, diffusive and subdiffusive transports are predicted by the disorder expansion of the mean square-displacement and the effective medium approximation. Monte Carlo simulations confirm the anomalous diffusion of photons. To observe photon subdiffusion experimentally, we suggest a dielectric film stack for realization of a distribut…
We show analytically that the perturbative expansion for the free energy of the zero dimensional (quenched) disordered Ising model is Borel-summable in a certain range of parameters, provided that the summation is carried out in two steps: first, in the strength of the original coupling of the Ising model and subsequently in the variance of the quenched disorder. This result is illustrated by some high-precision calculations of the free energy obtained by a straightforward numerical implementation of our sequential summation method.
We introduce a self-organized surface growth model in 2+1 dimensions with anisotropic avalanche process, which is expected to be in the universality class of the anisotropic quenched Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with alternative signs of the nonlinear KPZ terms. It turns out that the surface height correlation functions in each direction scales distinctively. The anisotropic behavior is attributed to the asymmetric behavior of the quenched KPZ equation in 1+1 dimensions with respect to the sign of the nonlinear KPZ term.
Application of CTRW to dipole hopping transport is considered. Correct versions of derivation of the CTRW-equations are presented. Existence of different forms of memory kernels is demonstrated. Correction of Scher-Lax memory kernel within geometrical memory approach is fulfilled in accordance with leading terms of concentration expansion. Approximate solution for autocorrelation function is constructed. Modern state of numerical simulation and experimental measurements of autocorrelation function in nuclear polarization delocalization is described.
We study rooted self avoiding polygons and self avoiding walks on deterministic fractal lattices of finite ramification index. Different sites on such lattices are not equivalent, and the number of rooted open walks W_n(S), and rooted self-avoiding polygons P_n(S) of n steps depend on the root S. We use exact recursion equations on the fractal to determine the generating functions for P_n(S), and W_n(S) for an arbitrary point S on the lattice. These are used to compute the averages $< P_n(S)>, <W_n(S)>, <log P_n(S)>$ and $<log W_n(S)>$ over different positions of S. We find that the connectivi…
An analytic effective medium theory is constructed to study the mean access times for random walks on hybrid disordered structures formed by embedding complex networks into regular lattices, considering transition rates $F$ that are different for steps across lattice bonds from the rates $f$ across network shortcuts. The theory is developed for structures with arbitrary shortcut distributions and applied to a class of partially-disordered traversal enhanced networks in which shortcuts of fixed length are distributed randomly with finite probability. Numerical simulations are found to be in exc…
Significant and persistent trajectory-to-trajectory variance are commonly observed in the particle tracking experiments, which have become a major challenge for the experiment data analysis. In this theoretical paper, we investigate the ergodicity recovery behavior, which helps to clarify the origin and the convergence of trajectory-to-trajectory fluctuation in various heterogeneous disordered media. The concepts of self-averaging and ergodicity are revisited in the context of trajectory analysis. The slow ergodicity recovery and the non-Gaussian diffusion in the annealed disordered media are …
Transport in complex systems is characterized by a fractal dimension -- the walk dimension -- that indicates the diffusive or anomalous nature of the underlying random walk process. Here we report on the experimental retrieval of this key quantity, using light waves propagating in disordered media. The approach is based on measurements of the time-resolved transmission, in particular on how the lifetime scales with sample size. We show that this allows one to retrieve the walk dimension and apply the concept to samples with varying degree of fractal heterogeneity. In addition, the method provi…
Multiple experiments on active systems consider oriented active suspensions on substrates or in chambers confined along one direction. The theories of polar and apolar phases in such geometries were considered in A. Maitra et al, arXiv 1901.01069 and A. Maitra et al., PNAS 115, 6934 (2018) respectively. However, the presence of quenched random disorder due to the substrate cannot be completely eliminated in many experimental contexts possibly masking the predictions from those theories. In this paper, I consider the effect of quenched orientational disorder on the phase behaviour of both polar…
The inference of Markov models from data on stochastic dynamical trajectories over the large time-window $T$ is revisited via the Large Deviations at Level 2.5 for the time-empirical density and the time-empirical flows. The goal is to obtain the large deviations properties for the probability distribution of the inferred Markov parameters in order to characterize their possible fluctuations around the true Markov parameters for large $T$. The explicit rate functions are given for several settings, namely discrete-time Markov chains, continuous-time Markov jump processes, and diffusion process…
We study the effect of quenched disorder on nonequilibrium systems of interacting particles, specifically, driven diffusive lattice gases with spatially disordered jump rates. The exact steady-state measure is found for a class of models evolving by drop-push dynamics, allowing several physical quantities to be calculated. Dynamical correlations are studied numerically in one dimension. We conjecture that the relevance of quenched disorder depends crucially upon the speed of the kinematic waves in the system. Time-dependent correlation functions, which monitor the dissipation of kinematic wave…
We discuss the effects of quenched disorder in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a hard walls trap. Starting from the disordered Gross-Pitaevskii functional, we obtain a representation for the quenched free energy as a series of integer moments of the partition function. Positive and negative disorder-dependent effective coupling constants appear in the integer moments. Going beyond the mean-field approximation, we compute the static two-point correlation functions at first-order in the positive effective coupling constants. We obtain the combined contributions of effects due to bo…
The principle characteristics of biased greedy random walks (BGRWs) on two-dimensional lattices with real-valued quenched disorder on the lattice edges are studied. Here, the disorder allows for negative edge-weights. In previous studies, considering the negative-weight percolation (NWP) problem, this was shown to change the universality class of the existing, static percolation transition. In the presented study, four different types of BGRWs and an algorithm based on the ant colony optimization (ACO) heuristic were considered. Regarding the BGRWs, the precise configurations of the lattice wa…
The eigenvalue spectra of the transition probability matrix for random walks traversing critically disordered clusters in three different types of percolation problems show that the random walker sees a developing Euclidean signature for short time scales as the local, full-coordination constraint is iteratively applied.
We study diffusion-limited pair annihilation $A+A\to 0$ on one-dimensional lattices with inhomogeneous nearest neighbour hopping in the limit of infinite reaction rate. We obtain a simple exact expression for the particle concentration $ρ_k(t)$ of the many-particle system in terms of the conditional probabilities $P(m;t|l;0)$ for a single random walker in a dual medium. For some disordered systems with an initially randomly filled lattice this leads asymptotically to $\bar{ρ(t)}=\bar{P(0;2t|0;0)}$ for the disorder-averaged particle density. We also obtain interesting exact relations for single…
Above two dimensions, diffusion of a particle in a medium with quenched random traps is believed to be well-described by the annealed continuous time random walk (CTRW). We propose an approximate expression for the first-passage-time (FPT) distribution in a given sample that enables detailed comparison of the two problems. For a system of finite size, the number and spatial arrangement of deep traps yield significant sample-to-sample variations in the FPT statistics. Numerical simulations of a quenched trap model with power-law sojourn times confirm the existence of two characteristic time sca…
Disorder plays a critical role in signal transport, by controlling the correlation of systems. In wave physics, disordered potentials suppress wave transport due to their localized eigenstates from random-walk scattering. Although the variation of localization with tunable disorder has been intensively studied as a bridge between ordered and disordered media, the general trend of disorder-enhanced localization has remained unchanged, failing in envisaging the existence of delocalization in highly-disordered potentials. Here, we propose the concept of 'metadisorder': tunable random-walk systems…
Non-Gaussian diffusion is commonly considered as a result of fluctuating diffusivity, which is correlated in time or in space or both. In this work, we investigate the non-Gaussian diffusion in static disordered media via a quenched trap model, where the diffusivity is spatially correlated. Several unique effects due to quenched disorder are reported. We analytically estimate the diffusion coefficient $D_{\text{dis}}$ and its fluctuation over samples of finite size. We show a mechanism of population splitting in the non-Gaussian diffusion. It results in a sharp peak in the distribution of disp…
