It has been known for some time that there is a deep connection between thermodynamics and gravity, with perhaps the most dramatic implication that the Einstein equations can be viewed as a thermodynamic equation of state. Recently Verlinde has proposed a model for gravity with a simple statistical mechanical interpretation that is applicable in the non-relatvistic regime. After critically analyzing the construction, we present a strong consistency check of the model. Specifically, we consider two well-motivated corrections to the area-entropy relation, the log correction and the volume correction, and follow Verlinde's construction to derive corrections to Newton's law of gravitation. We show that the deviations from Newton's law stemming from the log correction have the same form as the lowest order quantum effects of perturbative quantum gravity, and the deviations stemming from the volume correction have the same form as some modified Newtonian gravity models designed to explain the anomalous galactic rotation curves.
We study the entropic force by introducing a bound $S \le A^{3/4}$ between entropy and area which was derived by imposing the non-gravitational collapse condition. In this case, applying a modified entropic force to this system does not lead to the Newtonian force law.
It has been suggested that the Newtonian gravitational force may emerge as an entropic force from a holographic microscopic theory. In this framework, the possibility is reconsidered that Newton's gravitational coupling constant G can be derived from the fundamental constants of the underlying microscopic theory.
The entropic force has been recently argued to be responsible for dissociation of heavy quarkonia. In this paper, we analyze $R^2$ corrections and $R^4$ corrections to the entropic force, respectively. It is shown that for $R^2$ corrections, increasing $λ_{GB}$ (Gauss-Bonnet factor) leads to increasing the entropic force. While for $R^4$ corrections, increasing $λ$ ('t Hooft coupling) leads to decreasing the entropic force. Also, we discuss how the entropic force changes with the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, $η/s$, at strong coupling.
The theory of gravity has undergone somewhat of a revolution lately. Gravity is no longer a fundamental force it seems, but rather an effect of holographic entropy. Building on the works by Jacobsson, Padmanabhan and Verlinde we review the concept of Newtonian gravity as an entropic force and discuss a possible general action approach to Verlinde's theory. We also discuss some open problems and future prospects of Verlinde's approach.
The entropic force attracts a lot of interest for its multifunctional properties. For instance, Einstein's field equation, Newton's law of gravitation and the Friedmann equation can be derived from the entropic force. In this paper, utilizing a new kind of rainbow gravity model that was proposed by Magueijo and Smolin, we explore the quantum gravity corrections to the entropic force. First, we derive the modified thermodynamics of a rainbow black hole via its surface gravity. Then, according to Verlinde's theory, the quantum corrections to the entropic force are obtained. The result shows that…
Two well-known quantum corrections to the area law have been introduced in the literatures, namely, logarithmic and power-law corrections. Logarithmic corrections, arises from loop quantum gravity due to thermal equilibrium fluctuations and quantum fluctuations, while, power-law correction appears in dealing with the entanglement of quantum fields in and out the horizon. Inspired by Verlinde's argument on the entropic force, and assuming the quantum corrected relation for the entropy, we propose the entropic origin for the Coulomb's law in this note. Also we investigate the Uehling potential a…
Starting from first principles and general assumptions Newton's law of gravitation is shown to arise naturally and unavoidably in a theory in which space is emergent through a holographic scenario. Gravity is explained as an entropic force caused by changes in the information associated with the positions of material bodies. A relativistic generalization of the presented arguments directly leads to the Einstein equations. When space is emergent even Newton's law of inertia needs to be explained. The equivalence principle leads us to conclude that it is actually this law of inertia whose origin…
Verlinde's heuristic argument for the interpretation of the standard Newtonian gravitational force as an entropic force is generalized by the introduction of a minimum temperature (or maximum wave length) for the microscopic degrees of freedom on the holographic screen. With the simplest possible setup, the resulting gravitational acceleration felt by a test mass m from a point mass M at a distance R is found to be of the form of the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) as suggested by Milgrom. The corresponding MOND-type acceleration constant is proportional to the minimum temperature, which ca…
Some comments are given on recently proposed entropic gravity by Verlinde. We focus on the derivation of Newton's law of gravitation. It is shown that consistent classical relations are enough to result in the Newtonian gravity. In our derivation, it is crucial that the entropy is a quarter of the number of states in units of the Boltzmann constant $k_ B$, and the number of states is given by the holographic principle.
We examine the entropic picture of Newton's second law for the case of circular motion. It is shown that one must make modifications to the derivation of F=ma due to a change in the effective Unruh temperature for circular motion. These modifications present a challenge to the entropic derivation of Newton's second law, but also open up the possibility to experimentally test and constrain this model for large centripetal accelerations.
In this paper, by using the holographic principle, a modified equipartition theorem where we assume that below a critical temperature the energy is not equally divided on all bits, and the Unruh temperature, we derive MOND theory and a modified Friedmann equation compatible with MOND theory. Furthermore, we rederive a modified Newton's law of gravitation by employing an adequate redefinition of the numbers of bits.
Considering the general quantum corrections to the area law of black hole entropy and adopting the viewpoint that gravity interprets as an entropic force, we derive the modified forms of MOND theory of gravitation and Einstein field equations. As two special cases we study the logarithmic and power-law corrections to entropy and find the explicit form of the obtained modified equations.
Entropic forces have recently attracted considerable attention as ways to reformulate, retrodict, and perhaps even "explain'" classical Newtonian gravity from a rather specific thermodynamic perspective. In this article I point out that if one wishes to reformulate classical Newtonian gravity in terms of an entropic force, then the fact that Newtonian gravity is described by a conservative force places significant constraints on the form of the entropy and temperature functions. (These constraints also apply to entropic reinterpretations of electromagnetism, and indeed to any conservative forc…
A possible source of black hole entropy could be the entanglement of quantum fields in and out the horizon. The entanglement entropy of the ground state obeys the area law. However, a correction term proportional to a fractional power of area results when the field is in a superposition of ground and excited states. Inspired by the power-law corrections to entropy and adopting the viewpoint that gravity emerges as an entropic force, we derive modified Newton's law of gravitation as well as the corrections to Friedmann equations. In a different approach, we obtained power-law corrected Friedman…
We discuss consequences of an entropic view of gravity, which differs in details from the original proposals of Jacobson and Verlinde. We assume the entropy is localized in the degrees of freedom of the systems interacting gravitationally. We then find there is a density-dependent minimum length for Newtonian gravity. This makes renormalizability issues irrelevant. It also follows that at nanometer scales Newton's universal law fails, black holes with mass $M_{BH} \lesssim 10^{-13} M_{\odot}$ do not exist and all Hawking radiation is at unobservably low temperature.
In this study, the effects of the generalized uncertainty principle on the theory of gravity are analyzed. Inspired by Verlinde's entropic gravity approach and using the modified Unruh temperature, the generalized Einstein field equations with cosmological constant are obtained and corresponding conservation law is investigated. The resulting conservation law of energy-momentum tensor dictates that the generalized Einstein field equations are valid in a very limited range of accelerations. Moreover, the modified Newton's law of gravity and the modified Poisson equation are derived. In a certai…
We introduce the cavity enclosing a source mass $M$ to define the temperature force. Starting with the Tolman temperature in the stationary spacetime, we find a non-relativistic temperature $T_{non}= T_\infty(1-Φ/c^2)$ with the Newtonian potential $Φ$. This temperature could be also derived from the Tolman-Ehrenfest effect, satisfying a relation of $T=T_{\infty}e^{-Φ/c^2}$ with the local temperature $T$. Finally, we derive the temperature force $\vec{F}_{tem}=mc^2(\vec{\nabla} \ln T )$ which leads to the Newtonian force law without introducing the holographic screen defined by holographic prin…
In a recent publication in this journal, Erik Verlinde attempts to show that gravity should be viewed not as a fundamental force, but rather as an emergent thermodynamic phenomenon arising from an unspecified microscopic theory via equipartition and holography. This paper presents a challenge to his reformulation of gravity. A detailed examination of Verlinde's derivation leads to a number of questions that severely weaken the claim that such a theory correctly reproduces Newton's laws or Einstein gravity. In particular, we find that neither Newtonian gravity nor the Einstein equations are uni…
Quantum and noncommutative corrections to the Newtonian law of inertia are considered in the general setting of Verlinde's entropic force postulate. We demonstrate that the form for the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) emerges in a classical setting by seeking appropriate corrections in the entropy. We estimate the correction term by using concrete coherent states in the standard and generalized versions of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Using Jackiw's direct and analytic method we compute the explicit wavefunctions for these states producing minimal length as well as minimal products. S…
With Verlinde's recent proposal which says that gravity can be identified with an entropic force and considering the effects of generalized uncertainty principle in the black hole entropy-area relation we derive the modified equations for Newton's law of gravitation, modified Newtonian dynamics and Einstein's general relativity. The corrections to the Newtonian potential is compared with the corrections that come from Randall-Sundrum II model and an effective field theoretical model of quantum general relativity. The effect of the generalized uncertainty principle introduces a $\sqrt{\text{Are…
If we assume that the source of thermodynamic system, $ρ$ and $p$, are also the source of gravity, thermal quantities, such as entropy, temperature, and chemical potential, can induce effects of gravity, or gravity can induce thermal effects. We find only for systems with constant temperature and zero chemical potential, gravity can be seen as an entropic force. The case for Newtonian approximation is discussed.
We calculate new corrections to the Brane-world dynamics, lying in a 5D Schwarzschild-De Sitter black hole, generalizing the result of Nojiri, Odintsov and Ogushi (NOO) in Ref.\cite{Nojiri:2002vu}, The NOO entropy effect is based on the Logharitmic correction to the bulk entropy firstly calculated by Mukherji and Pal in Ref.\cite{Mukherji:2002de}. We calculate higher order contributions to the brane worldsheet. The extra terms obtained lead to interesting implications in brane-cosmology. In particular, new entropic terms rapidly disappear in the late Universe while exploding in the very Early …
After recalling the basic concepts of gravity as an emergent phenomenon, we analyze the recent derivation of Newton's law in terms of entropic force proposed by Verlinde. By reviewing some points of the procedure, we extend it to the case of a generic quantum gravity entropic correction to get compelling deviations to the Newton's law. More specifically, we study: (1) noncommutative geometry deviations and (2) ungraviton corrections. As a special result in the noncommutative case, we find that the noncommutative character of the manifold would be equivalent to the temperature of a thermodynami…
Under natural assumptions on the thermodynamic properties of space and time with the holographic principle we reproduce a MOND-like behaviour of gravity on particular scales of mass and length, where Newtonian gravity requires a modification or extension if no dark matter component is introduced in the description of gravitational phenomena. The result is directly obtained with the assumption that a fundamental constant of nature with dimensions of acceleration needs to be introduced into gravitational interactions. This in turn allows for modifications or extensions of the equipartion law and…
A heuristic entropic-gravity derivation has previously been given of the gravitational two-body force of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). Here, it is shown that also another characteristic of MOND can be recovered, namely, the external field effect (implying a violation of the Strong Equivalence Principle). In fact, the derivation gives precisely the modified Poisson equation which Bekenstein and Milgrom proposed as a consistent nonrelativistic theory of MOND.
In this paper we suggest a connection between quantum mechanics and Verlinde's recently proposed entropic force theory for the laws of Newton. We propose an entropy based on the quantum mechanical probability density distribution. With the assumption that the holographic principle holds we propose that our suggested quantum entropy generalizes the Bekenstein entropy used by Verlinde in his approach. Based on this assumption we suggest that Verlinde's entropic theory of gravity has a quantum mechanical origin. We establish a reformulation of the Newtonian potential for gravity based on this qua…
The entropic gravity scenario recently proposed by Erik Verlinde reproduced the Newton's law of purely classical gravity yet the key assumptions of this approach all have quantum mechanical origins. This is atypical for emergent phenomena in physics, where the underlying, more fundamental physics often reveals itself as corrections to the leading classical behavior. So one naturally wonders: where is hbar hiding in entropic gravity? To address this question, we first revisit the idea of holographic screen as well as entropy and its variation law in order to obtain a self-consistent approach to…
In this letter, we use the Parikh-Wilczek tunneling model of Hawking radiation to illustrate that a reformulation of Verlinde's entropic gravity is needed to derive the Newton's law for a temperature-varying screen, demanded by the conservation of energy. Furthermore, the entropy stored in the holographic screen is shown to be additive and its temperature dependence can be obtained.
We analyze the question of possible quantum corrections in the entropic scenario of emergent gravity. Using a fuzzy sphere as a natural quasiclassical approximation for the spherical holographic screen, we analyze whether it is possible to observe such corrections to Newton's law in principle. The main outcome of our analysis is that without the complete knowledge of quantum dynamics of the microscopical degrees of freedom, any Plank scale correction cannot be trusted. Some perturbative corrections might produce reliable predictions well below the Plank scale.
Using a fixed-energy amplitude in Randall-Sundrum single brane scenario, we compute the Newton potential on the brane. It is shown that the correction terms to the Newton potential involve a logarithmic factor. Especially, when the distance between two point masses are very small compared to $AdS$ radius, the contribution of KK spectrum becomes dominant compared to the usual inversely square law. This fact may be used to prove the existence of an extra dimension experimentally.
We calculate small correction terms to gravitational potential on Randall-Sundrum brane with an induced Einstein term. The behaviors of the correction terms depend on the magnitudes of $AdS$ radius $k^{-1}$ and a characteristic length scale $ł$ of model. We represent the gravitational potential for arbitrary $k$ and $ł$ at all distances.
In Verlinde's theory of entropic gravity, the internal degrees of freedom are marked by "bits", but the microscopic origin of "bits" is unknown hitherto. To this direction, we adopt the quantum harmonic oscillators to naively model the internal degrees of freedom. In this model, the equipartition relation is modified at the low temperature. The Newton's law and Poisson's equation of gravity are reproduced at small distances, but they receive appreciable corrections at large distances. Geometrization of gravity for this model is explored, resulting in modifications to Einstein equations.
This work presents a study of the possibility for extending the well-known results of E.Verlinde concerning the entropic nature of gravity to the ultraviolet region (Planck's energies) and also the derivation of quantum corrections to Einstein Equations
In this paper, we study thermodynamical contributions to the theory of gravity under the $q$-deformed boson and fermion gas models. According to the Verlinde's proposal, the law of gravity is not based on a fundamental interaction but it emerges as an entropic force from the changes of entropy associated with the information on the holographic screen. In addition, Strominger shows that the extremal quantum black holes obey neither boson nor fermion statistics, but they obey deformed statistic. Using these notions, we find $q$-deformed entropy and temperature functions. We also present the cont…
The corrections to the gravitational potential due to a Sol extra dimensional compact manifold, denoted as $M_A^3$, are studied. The total spacetime is $M^4\times M_A^3$. We compare the range of the corrections to the range of the $T^3$ corrections. It is found that for small values of the radius of the extra dimensions ($R<10^{-6}$) the the Sol manifold corrections are large compared to the 3-torus corrections. Also, Sol manifolds corrections can be larger, comparable or smaller compared to the 3-torus case, for larger $R$.
We propose the concept of MoNDian dark matter which behaves like cold dark matter at cluster and cosmic scales but emulates modified Newtonian dynamics at the galactic scale. The connection between global physics and local galactic dynamics is implemented via entropic gravity. We also give an alternative formulation of MoNDian dark matter by using an effective gravitational Born-Infeld theory. In the latter approach, we show that the quanta of MoNDian dark matter obey infinite statistics.
In this note I argue that the expression for entropic force, used as a starting point in Verlinde's derivation of Newton's law, can be deduced from first principles if one assumes that that the microscopic theory behind his construction is the topological $\SO(4,1)$ BF theory coupled to particles.
We consider E. Verlinde's proposal that gravity is an entropic force -- we shall call this theory entropic gravity (EG) -- and reanalyze a recent claim that this theory is in contradiction with the observation of the gravitationally-bound ground state of neutrons in the GRANIT experiment. We find that EG does not necessarily contradict the existence of gravitationally-bound quantum states of neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field, since EG is equivalent to Newtonian gravity in this case. However, certain transitions between the gravitationally-bound quantum states of neutrons, in particul…
In this article, we investigate the assumption of equipartition of energy in arguments for the entropic nature of gravity. It has already been pointed out by other authors that equipartition is not valid for low temperatures. Here we additionally point out that it is similarly not valid for systems with bounded energy. Many explanations for black hole entropy suggest that the microscopic systems responsible have a finite dimensional state space, and thus finite maximum energy. Assuming this to be the case leads to drastic corrections to Newton's law for high gravitational fields, and, in parti…
Based on the connection between Tsallis nonextensive statistics and fractional dimensional space, in this work we have introduced, with the aid of Verlinde's formalism, the Newton constant in a fractal space as a function of the nonextensive constant. With this result we have constructed a curve that shows the direct relation between Tsallis nonextensive parameter and the dimension of this fractal space. We have demonstrated precisely that there are ambiguities between the results due to Verlinde's approach and the ones due to fractional calculus formalism. We have shown precisely that these a…
In this work, we evaluate the Shannon-like entropic measure of spatially-localized functions for a five-dimensional braneworld generated by a double sine-Gordon (DSG) potential. The differential configurational entropy (DCE) has been shown in several recent works to be a configurational informational measure (CIM) that selects critical points and brings out phase transitions in confined energy models with arbitrary parameters. We select the DSG scenario because it presents an energy-degenerate spatially localized profile where the solutions to the scalar field demonstrate critical behavior tha…
It has been recently proposed that the interpretation of gravity as an emergent, entropic force might have nontrivial implications to cosmology. Here two approaches are investigated: in one, the Friedman equation receives entropic contributions from the usually neglected surface terms, and in another, the extra terms are derived from quantum corrections to the entropy formula. UV terms may drive inflation, avoiding a recently derived no-go theorem, though in some cases leading to a graceful exit problem. IR terms can generate dark energy, alleviating the cosmological constant problem. The quan…
We have found the graviton contribution to the one-loop quantum correction to the Newton law. This correction results in interaction decreasing with distance as 1/r^3 and is dominated numerically by the graviton contribution. The previous calculations of this contribution to the discussed effect are demonstrated to be incorrect.
Verlinde's proposal on the entropic origin of gravity is based strongly on the assumption that the equipartition law of energy holds on the holographic screen induced by the mass distribution of the system. However, from the theory of statistical mechanics we know that the equipartition law of energy does not hold in the limit of very low temperature. Inspired by the Debye model for the equipartition law of energy in statistical thermodynamics and adopting the viewpoint that gravitational systems can be regarded as a thermodynamical system, we modify Einstein field equations. We also perform t…
In this paper we consider general relativity and its combination with scalar quantum electrodynamics (QED) as an effective quantum field theory at energies well below the Planck scale. This enables us to compute the one-loop quantum corrections to the Newton and Coulomb potential induced by the combination of graviton and photon fluctuations. We derive the relevant Feynman rules and compute the nonanalytical contributions to the one-loop scattering matrix for charged scalars in the nonrelativistic limit. In particular, we derive the post-Newtonian corrections of order $Gm/\text c^2 r$ from gen…
We study a cosmology by considering entropic issues. We make a bare/effective description of the equation of state of the cosmic fluid through a bare (ω)/effective (ω_eff) conservation equation. In the bare case, where we have a non conserved equation of state for the cosmic fluid, we describe the change in the sign of the inhomogeneus term at different times of the cosmic evolution. We show that by a redefinition of the adiabatic ω-parameter we can recover the usual scheme for the cosmic evolution. In the effective case we show also that if the evolution is driven by dust or cosmological cons…
The derivation of effective quantum gravity corrections to Newton's potential is an important step in the whole effective quantum field theory approach. We hereby add new strong arguments in favor of omitting all the diagrams with internal lines of the massive sources, and we also recalculate the corrections to the Newtonian potential using functional methods in an arbitrary parametrization of the quantum fluctuations of the metric. The general proof of the gauge- and parametrization-independence within this approach is also explicitly given. On top of that, we argue that the universality of t…
We present in this work, the calculations of corrections in the Newton's law of gravitation due to Kaluza-Klein gravitons in five-dimensional warped thick braneworld scenarios. We consider here a recently proposed model, namely, the hybrid Bloch brane. This model couples two scalar fields to gravity and is engendered from a domain wall-like defect. Also, two other models the so-called asymmetric hybrid brane and compact brane are considered. As a matter of fact, these models are obtained from deformations of the phi4 and sine-Gordon topological defects. Then, we constructed the branes upon suc…
In this note one suggests a possibility of direct observation of the $θ$-parameter, introduced in the Born--Infeld theory of electroweak and gravitational fields, developed in quant-ph/0202024. Namely, one may treat $θ$ as a universal constant, responsible for correction to the Coulomb and Newton laws, allowing direct interaction between electrical charges and masses.
It is an old idea to realize Einstein's equations as a thermodynamical equation of state. Since then, there has been new conjectures to understand gravity from another point of view. In this way we can accept that the gravitational field is not an underlying one like an emergent force from other approaches based on the knowledge of relativity, quantum and black holes thermodynamics, and different statistical formalisms. One important question concerning this gravity/thermostatistics correspondence is whether the holographic screen could be well defined for a nonrelativistic case of a source ma…
The entropic formulation of the inertia and the gravity relies on quantum, geometrical and informational arguments. The fact that the results are completly classical is missleading. In this paper we argue that the entropic formulation provides new insights into the quantum nature of the inertia and the gravity. We use the entropic postulate to determine the quantum uncertainty in the law of inertia and in the law of gravity in the Newtonian Mechanics, the Special Relativity and in the General Relativity. These results are obtained by considering the most general quantum property of the matter …
