Polycrystalline NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 superconductors prepared by high pressure (HP) and ambient pressure (AP) method were comparatively studied by magnetization and transport measurements. Upper critical field (Hc2), irreversibility field (Hirr) and the anisotropy parameter were estimated from resistance transition curves. The broadening of transition width was observed, and ascribed to both Hc2 anisotropy and superconductivity inhomogeneity of samples. Magnetic hysteresis loops (MHLs) in low fields were measured to detect the trace of weak-link behavior. The reclosed hysteresis loops in low fields manifest that there are weak-links in both samples. Magnetization critical current density Jcm were derived from MHLs. High-pressure synthesized sample shows higher Jcm. However, by means of direct transport I-V measurements, transport critical current density Jct was very low. The Jct values for two samples are comparable. Large discrepancies between Jcm and Jct also indicate that there are weak-links in both samples. The relative mechanism is discussed in detail.
Identifying the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in the recently-discovered ferro-oxypnictide family of superconductors, RFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{y}$, where $R$ is a rare earth, is a high priority. Many of the proposed order parameters have internal $π$ phase shifts, like the d-wave order found in the cuprates, which would result in direction-dependent phase shifts in tunnelling. In dense polycrystalline samples, these phase shifts in turn would result in spontaneous orbital currents and magnetization in the superconducting state. We perform scanning SQUID microscopy on a dense polycry…
Raman spectra of polycrystalline NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2) compound have been systematically investigated as functions of temperature and fluorine concentration. Scanning electron microscopic and Raman microscopic characterization demonstrates that the polycrystalline samples mainly contain two phases, i.e. superconductor NdFeAsO1-xFx compound and a MnP-type FeAs phase, with dissimilar characteristic Raman bands. It was found that fluorine doping leads to structure disorder in the insulator Nd-O layers and high temperature coefficient of Fe-As vibrational mode.
The low-temperature magnetic structure of NdFeAsO has been revisited using neutron powder diffraction and symmetry analysis using the Sarah representational analysis program. Four magnetic models with one magnetic variable for each of the Nd and Fe sublattices were tested. The best fit was obtained using a model with Fe moments pointing along the c-direction, and Nd moments along the a-direction. This signals a significant interplay between rare-earth and transition metal magnetism, which results in a spin-reorientation of the Fe sublattice upon ordering of the Nd moments. All models that fit …
Both DC and AC magnetization measurements were performed on the NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 superconductor to investigate the influence of magnetism on the superconducting properties of this system. The crossover of the ZFC and FC magnetic susceptibility curves under 7.5KOe was observed. The imaginary component of the first harmonics of the AC magnetic susceptibility, increases with the increasing DC field below 10K and shows frequency dependency under 7.5KOe at low temperature. The paramagnetism of Nd3+ ions tilts the magnetic hysteresis loops and broadens the hysteresis width. After correction for the …
As low as 900 oC, iron-based layered quaternary compound NdFeAsO0.75 was synthesized through solid state reaction method. XRD measurements illustrate almost pure phase of tetragonal phase NdFeAsO was formed. The synthesis temperature in our experiment is the lowest among all the reported methods without the help of any mineralizer. After further treatment under high pressure of 6 GPa at temperature of 1300 oC for 2 hours, the electrical transport property of NdFeAsO0.75 was transformed from insulator-like to metal- like behavior.
Magneto-optical imaging was used to study the local magnetization in polycrystalline NdFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ (NFAOF). Individual crystallites up to $\sim200\times100\times30$ $μm^{3}$ in size could be mapped at various temperatures. The in-grain, persistent current density is about $j\sim10^{5}$ A/cm$^{2}$ and the magnetic relaxation rate in a remanent state peaks at about $T_{m}\sim38$ K. By comparison with with the total magnetization measured in a bar-shaped, dense, polycrystalline sample, we suggest that NdFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ is similar to a layered high-$T_{c}$, compound such as Bi$_{…
NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 belongs to the recently discovered family of high-TC iron-based superconductors. The influence of high pressure on transport properties of this material has been studied. Contrary to La-based compounds, we did not observe a maximum in TC under pressure. Under compression, TC drops rapidly as a linear function of pressure with the slope k = -2.8 \pm 0.1 K / GPa. The extrapolated value of TC at zero pressure is about TC (0) = 51.7 \pm 0.4 K. At pressures higher than ~18.4 GPa, the superconducting state disappears at all measured temperatures. The resistance changes slope and sho…
In this paper, nominal compositions of NdFeAsO0.8F0.2, NdFeAs0.95Sb0.05O0.8F0.2 and NdFeAs0.95P0.05O0.8F0.2 were prepared by one step solid state reaction method. The structural, electrical and morphological properties of samples were characterized through the XRD pattern, the 4 probe method and SEM, respectively. The crystal structure of our samples was tetragonal with P4/nmm:2 symmetry group. Also, the (x, y, z) and occupancy of ions and lattice parameters were changed by isovalent substitution of Phosphorus P and Antimony Sb in the NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 sample. The alfa and beta bond angles and Fe…
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to investigate the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of Nd3+ (J = 9/2) in the iron pnictide NdFeAsO. The crystal field level structures for both the high-temperature paramagnetic phase and the low-temperature antiferromagnetic phase of NdFeAsO are constructed. The variation of CEF excitations of Nd3+ reflects not only the change of local symmetry but also the change of magnetic ordered state of the Fe sublattice. By analyzing the crystal field interaction with a crystal field Hamiltonian, the crystal field parameters are obtain…
Among the widely studied superconducting iron-pnictide compounds belonging to the Ln1111 family (with Ln a lanthanide), a systematic investigation of the crossover region between the superconducting and the antiferromagnetic phase for the Ln = Nd case has been missing. We fill this gap by focusing on the intermediate doping regime of NdFeAsO(1-x)F(x) by means of dc-magnetometry and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements. The long-range order we detect at low fluorine doping is replaced by short-range magnetic interactions at x = 0.08, where also superconductivity appears. In this case, longitudin…
We report plane-polarized Raman scattering spectra of iron oxypnictide superconductor NdFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ single crystals with varying fluorine $x$ content. The spectra exhibit sharp and symmetrical phonon lines with a weak dependence on fluorine doping $x$. The temperature dependence does not show any phonon anomaly at the superconducting transition. The Fe related phonon intensity shows a strong resonant enhancement below 2 eV. We associate the resonant enhancement to the presence of an interband transition around 2 eV observed in optical conductivity. Our results point to a rather weak cou…
We report 75As-NQR/NMR studies on the oxygen-deficient iron(Fe)-based oxypnictide superconductors LaFeAsO_{0.6} (T_c=28 K) along with the results on LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO_{0.75}(T_c=20 K) and NdFeAsO_{0.6}(T_c=53 K). Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 of 75As NQR at zero field on LaFeAsO_{0.6} has revealed a T^3 dependence below T_c upon cooling without the coherence peak just below T_c, evidencing the unconventional superconducting state with the line-node gap. We have found an intimate relationship between the nuclear quadrupole frequencyof 75As and T_c for four samples used in this study…
We prepared polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm1111) bulk samples by sintering and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) in order to study the effects of phase purity and relative density on the intergranular current density. Sintered and HIPped Sm1111 samples are denser with fewer impurity phases, such as SmOF and the grain boundary wetting phase, FeAs. We found quite complex magnetization behavior due to variations of both the inter and intragranular current densities. Removing porosity and reducing second phase content enhanced the intergranular current density, but HIPping reduced Tc and the intragran…
The structural and magnetic phase transitions have been studied on NdFeAsO single crystals by neutron and x-ray diffraction complemented by resistivity and specific heat measurements. Two low-temperature phase transitions have been observed in addition to the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition at T_S = 142 K and the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) Fe order below T_N = 137 K. The Fe moments order AFM in the well-known stripe-like structure in the (ab) plane, but change from AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) arrangement along the c direction below T* = 15 K accompanied by the onset of Nd AFM order b…
We present results of transport and magnetic properties and heat capacity measurements on polycrystalline CeFeAsO, PrFeAsO, and NdFeAsO. These materials undergo structural phase transitions, spin density wave-like magnetic ordering of small moments on iron, and antiferromagnetic ordering of rare earth moments. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetoresistance are reported. The magnetic behavior of the materials have been investigated using Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. Transport …
Superconductivity in anti-PbO-type iron chalcogenides Fe1-xTe1-ySey (x = 0, 0.1, y = 0.1 0.4) depends on the amount (x) of interstitial iron atoms located between the FeTe1-ySey layers. Non-superconducting samples of nominal Fe1.1Te1-ySey convert to superconductors with critical temperatures up to 14 K after annealing at 300°C in an oxygen atmosphere. The process is irreversible upon subsequent hydrogen annealing. Magnetic measurements are consistent with the formation of iron oxides suggesting that oxygen annealing preferably extracts interstitial iron from Fe1-xTe1-ySey which interfere with …
Here we report a new class of superconductors prepared by high pressure synthesis in the quaternary family ReFeAsO1-delta (Re = Sm, Nd, Pr, Ce, La) without fluorine doping. The onset superconducting critical temperature (Tc) in these compounds increases with the reduction of Re atom size, and the highest Tc obtained so far is 55 K in SmFeAsO1-delta. For the NdFeAsO1-delta system with different oxygen concentration a dome-shaped phase diagram was found.
We have investigated experimentally how properties of NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 superconductor affected due to the substitution of the Ca2+/Nd3+ doping. Based on the XRD data refinement, various structural parameters such as lattice parameters, bond angles, bond length, and etc. were studied. We have determined the upper limit of the calcium solubility in the NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 phase and it is restricted to x=0.05. Also, we have found that the lattice parameters and the cell volume decreased by increasing the calcium content. According to the XRD data analysis, we have argued that these reductions are due to…
Early studies have found quasi-reversible magnetization curves in polycrystalline bulk rare-earth iron oxypnictides that suggest either wide-spread obstacles to intergranular current or very weak vortex pinning. In the present study of polycrystalline samarium and neodymium rare-earth iron oxypnictide samples made by high pressure synthesis, the hysteretic magnetization is significantly enhanced. Magneto optical imaging and study of the field dependence of the remanent magnetization as a function of particle size both show that global currents over the whole sample do exist but that the interg…
We study the effect of the lattice structure on the spin-fluctuation mediated superconductivity in the iron pnictides adopting the five-band models of several virtual lattice structures of LaFeAsO as well as actual materials such as NdFeAsO and LaFePO obtained from the maximally-localized Wannier orbitals. Random phase approximation is applied to the models to solve the Eliashberg equation. This reveals that the gap function and the strength of the superconducting instability are determined by the cooperation or competition among multiple spin fluctuation modes arising from several nestings am…
Photoemission spectroscopy with low-energy tunable photons on oxygen-deficient iron-based oxypnictide superconductors NdFeAsO0.85 (Tc=52K) reveals a distinct photon-energy dependence of the electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF). A clear shift of the leading-edge can be observed in the superconducting states with 9.5 eV photons, while a clear Fermi cutoff with little leading-edge shift can be observed with 6.0 eV photons. The results are indicative of the superconducting gap opening not on the hole-like ones around Gamma (0,0) point but on the electron-like sheets around M(pi,pi) point…
Hole-doping of NdFeAsO via partial replacement of Nd3+ by Sr2+ is a successful route to obtain superconducting phases (Tc = 13.5 K for a Sr2+ content of 20%); however, the structural and electronic response with doping is different from and non-symmetric to that in the electron-doped side of the phase diagram.
Temperature dependent resistivity of the iron-based superconductor NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 was measured under different applied fields and excitation currents. Arrhenius plot shows an anomalous tail effect, which contains obvious two resistivity dropping stages. The first is caused by the normal superconducting transition, and the second is supposed to be related to the weak-link between the grains. A model for the resistivity dropping related to the weak-link behavior is proposed, which is based on the Josephson junctions formed by the impurities in grain boundaries like FeAs, Sm2O3 and cracks toget…
We investigated the temperature dependence of the density-of-states in the iron-based superconductor SmO_1-xF_xFeAs (x=0, 0.12, 0.15, 0.2) with high resolution angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy. The density-of-states suppression is observed with decreasing temperature in all samples, revealing two characteristic energy scales (10meV and 80meV). However, no obvious doping dependence is observed. We argue that the 10meV suppression is due to an anomalously doping-independent normal state pseudogap, which becomes the superconducting gap once in the superconducting state; and alert the p…
We described the effect of nonmagnetic impurity on the superconductivity behavior of the NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 iron-based superconductor. The resistivity measurement showed that the superconductivity suppressed upon increasing the low amounts of calcium impurity (x<0.05). Also, the Tc decreased with the increase in the residual resistivity. Such behavior was qualitatively described by the Abrikosov-Gorkov theory and confirmed that these impurities act as scattering centers. For our samples, the exchange constant between the calcium and the conduction electron spins was estimated Jexc=|8| meV. Moreove…
The new rare-earth arsenate superconductors are layered, low carrier density compounds with many similarities to the high-Tc cuprates. An important question is whether they also exhibit weak-coupling across randomly oriented grain-boundaries. In this work we show considerable evidence for such weak-coupling by study of the dependence of magnetization in bulk and powdered samples. Bulk sample magnetization curves show very little hysteresis while remanent magnetization shows almost no sample size dependence, even after powdering. We conclude that these samples exhibit substantial electromagneti…
A trapped field of over 1 T at 5 K and 0.5 T at 20 K has been measured between a stack of magnetized cylinders of bulk polycrystalline Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconductors 10 mm in diameter and 18 mm in combined thickness. The trapped field showed a low magnetic creep rate (~3% after 24 hours at 5 K), while magneto-optical imaging revealed a trapped field distribution corresponding to uniform macroscopic current loops circulating through the sample. The superconductors were manufactured by hot isostatic pressing of pre-reacted powders using the scalable powder-in-tube technique. A high Vickers hard…
We present a theoretical ab-initio approach that allows us to explicitly calculate the superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) of the iron-based superconductors of LaFeAsO1-xFx, SmFeAsO1-xFx, NdFeAsO1-xFx, Ba1-xKxFe2As2, FeSe and LiFeAs that fit perfectly with the experiments. We consider recent evidence that electron-phonon coupling may have been underestimated previously, and a prediction that antiferromagnetism can greatly enhance electron-phonon coupling through localized iron d orbitals. We then include the contribution of these localized orbitals in a McMillan formalism. In addition…
The effect of atomic substitution of Te in iron based superconductors FeSe (1:1 type), which exhibits the simplest crystal structure among the iron-based superconductors, has been investigated in terms of structural, electronic transport and magnetic properties. Polycrystalline samples with nominal Se:Te in FeSe1-xTex samples for x=0.5350°C, 0.5700°C, 0.6700°C and 0.75700°C were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. It has been observed that the most superconducting properties seen in x=0.6700°C samples as dc magnetic susceptibility, ac susceptibility and resistivity measurements. Tc…
The effects of replacing small amounts of Co with Fe in NdCoAsO are reported. Polycrystalline materials with compositions NdCo1-xFexAsO (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20) are studied and the results compared to previous reports for NdCoAsO. Rietveld analysis of powder x-ray diffraction data shows that as Fe replaces Co on the transition metal (T) site, the T-As distance increases, and the As tetrahedra surrounding the T-site become more regular. Electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements indicate that the three magnetic phase transitions in NdCoAsO are suppressed as Co is replaced by …
The recent discovery of iron-based superconductors challenges the existing paradigm of high-temperature superconductivity. Owing to their unusual multi-orbital band structure, magnetism, and electron correlation, theories propose a unique sign reversed s-wave pairing state, with the order parameter changing sign between the electron and hole Fermi pockets. However, because of the complex Fermi surface topology and material related issues, the predicted sign reversal remains unconfirmed. Here we report a novel phase-sensitive technique for probing unconventional pairing symmetry in the polycrys…
The field-angular dependence and anisotropy of the critical current density in iron-based superconductors is evaluated using a phenomenological approach featuring distinct anisotropy factors for the penetration depth and the coherence length. Both the weak collective pinning limit, and the strong pinning limit relevant for iron-based superconductors at low magnetic fields are considered. It is found that in the more anisotropic materials, such as SmFeAsO and NdFeAsO, the field-angular dependence is completely dominated by the coherence-length (upper-critical field) anisotropy, thereby explaini…
We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on polycrystalline LaFePO and Sr2ScO3FeP, two members of the iron phosphide families of superconductors. No evidence is found for any magnetic fluctuations in the spectrum of either material in the energy and wavevector ranges probed. Special attention is paid to the wavevector at which spin-density-wave-like fluctuations are seen in other iron-based superconductors. We estimate that the magnetic signal, if present, is at least a factor of four (Sr2ScO3FeP) or seven (LaFePO) smaller than in the related iron arsenide and chalcogenide supercond…
The iron oxyarsenide TbFeAsO0.85 was synthesized by a high-pressure method. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was obtained and characterized by measurements of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity. Bulk superconductivity with Tc of 42 K was clearly established without an F doping usually conducted to tune on superconductivity in the iron oxypnictide.
Exploratory synthesis efforts for iron-based superconductors (FeSC) have been driven by hopes of improving superconducting critical temperatures (TCs), providing high-quality samples for in-depth studies of intrinsic properties, and exploring potential superconductivity in similar families of materials. This manuscript summarizes the synthesis routes that are used for producing FeSC and their undoped parents, in single crystal and polycrystalline forms. A few of the materials challenges are summarized.
We report single-crystal growth of La$_{0.34}$Na$_{0.66}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ iron-based superconductor with the size of several millimeters. The samples were accidentally obtained in trying to grow LaFeAsO$_{1-y}$F$_y$ ( $y \geq$ 0.8 ) single crystals with NaAs and NaF flux. The sample shows both antiferromagnetic and structural transitions at 106 K. The superconducting transition temperature is about 27 K with the superconducting anisotropy of about 1.9. These values and the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient suggest that La$_{0.34}$Na$_{0.66}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ belongs to hole-doped "122" fam…
Polycrystalline samples of the layered iron arsenides Sr2CrO3FeAs and Ba2ScO3FeAs were synthesized by high temperature solid state reactions and their crystal structures determined by the X-ray powder diffraction. Their structures are tetragonal (P4/nmm; Sr2CrO3FeAs: a = 391.12(1) pm, c = 1579.05(3) pm; Ba2ScO3FeAs: a = 412.66(5) pm, c = 1680.0(2) pm, Z = 2) and isotypic to Sr2ScO3CuS. Iron arsenide layers are sandwiched between perowskite-like oxide blocks and separated by ~1600 pm, which is much larger compared to the 1111 iron arsenide superconductors. The bond length and angles within the …
Neutron diffraction and small angle scattering experiments have been carried out on the double-isotopic polycrystalline sample (7Li0.82Fe0.18OD)FeSe. Profile refinements of the diffraction data establish the composition and reveal an essentially single phase material with lattice parameters of a= 3.7827 Å and c= 9.1277 Å at 4 K, in the ferromagnetic-superconductor regime, with a bulk superconducting transition of TC = 18 K. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements in zero applied field reveal the onset of ferromagnetic order below TF ~ 12.5 K, with a wave vector and temperature depen…
The thermal properties are one of the key parameters to control phase purity and microstructure of polycrystalline materials. The melting point of the iron-based BaFe2As2 superconductor (Ba122), which foresees high-field applications, remains controversial. In this work, thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry measurements (TG-DSC) of undoped and Co-doped Ba122 were carried out. Mixtures of elemental metals and pre-reacted Ba122 powders were prepared to investigate the thermal responses during in situ and ex situ synthesis routes, respectively. In addition, the phases and microstruc…
We present the first study of codoped iron-arsenide superconductors of the 122 family (Sr/Ba)_(1-x)K_xFe_(2-y)Co_yAs_2 with the purpose to increase the upper critical field H_c2 compared to single doped (Sr/Ba)Fe_2As_2 materials. H_c2 was investigated by measuring the magnetoresistance in high pulsed magnetic fields up to 64 T. We find, that H_c2 extrapolated to T = 0 is indeed enhanced significantly to ~ 90 T for polycrystalline samples of Ba_0.55K_0.45Fe_1.95Co_0.05As_2 compared to ~75 T for Ba_0.55K_0.45Fe_2As_2 and BaFe_1.8Co_0.2As_2 single crystals. Codoping thus is a promising way for th…
Point contact Andreev reflection spectra have been taken as a function of temperature and magnetic field on the polycrystalline form of the newly discovered iron-based superconductor Sr2ScFePO3. A zero bias conductance peak which disappears at the superconducting transition temperature, dominates all of the spectra. Data taken in high magnetic fields show that this feature survives until 7T at 2K and a flattening of the feature is observed in some contacts. Here we inspect whether these observations can be interpreted within a d-wave, or nodal order parameter framework which would be consisten…
Thin films of the iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (Ba122:P) were fabricated on polycrystalline metal-tape substrates with two kinds of in-plane grain boundary alignments (well aligned (4 deg.) and poorly aligned (8 deg.)) by pulsed laser deposition. The poorly aligned substrate is not applicable to cuprate-coated conductors because the in-plane alignment >4 deg. results in exponential decay of the critical current density (Jc). The Ba122:P film exhibited higher Jc at 4 K when grown on the poorly aligned substrate than on the well-aligned substrate even though the crystallinity was po…
We have performed electrical resistivity measurements of a polycrystalline sample of FeSe$_{0.25}$Te$_{0.75}$, which exhibits superconductivity at $T_{\rm c} \sim 14$ K, in magnetic fields up to 55 T to determine the upper critical field $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}$. In this compound, very large slopes of $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}$ at the onset, the mid-point, the zero-resistivity temperatures on superconductivity are determined to be -13.7, -10.1, and -6.9 T/K, respectively. The observed $μ_{0}H_{\rm c2}(T)$s of this compound are considerably smaller than those expected from the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model…
Neutron powder diffraction experiments were carried out on polycrystalline SrFe$_2$As$_2$ in order to determine the magnetic structure and its relationship with the crystallographic one. Below $T_0$=205 K, magnetic reflections appear simultaneously with the onset of the orthorhombic distortion. From a detailed Rietveld analysis, the magnetic propagation vector of SrFe$_2$As$_2$ is determined to be {\textit{\textbf{q}}}=(1 0 1); the coupling of Fe moments is antiferromagnetic along the longer $a$ direction within the Fe-As layer, and the interlayer coupling is antiferromagnetic as well. The siz…
122 type pnictide superconductors are of particular interest for high-field applications because of their large upper critical fields Hc2 (> 100 T), low Hc2 anisotropy r (< 2), and high thin-film critical current densities Jc (> 1 MA/cm2 at 4.2 K). Successful magnet applications require fabrication of polycrystalline superconducting wires that exhibit large in-field Jc, which is limited by poor grain coupling and weak-link behavior at grain boundaries. Here we report our recent achievement in the developing Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tapes with transport Jc up to 0.1 MA/cm2 at 10 T and 4.2 K. This value …
We have synthesized polycrystalline samples of Pt-substituted SrFe2As2 and measured the temperature dependence of magnetization and electrical resistivity. We have observed the superconducting transition at Tc = 17 K with the maximum shielding volume fraction at x = 0.125 in Sr(Fe1-xPtx)2As2. It is found that the maximum Tc depends on the substituted element, so it is important to substitute various elements to explore new iron-based superconductors with higher Tc.
Quasi-one-dimensional $A_2\text{Cr}_3\text{As}_3$ (with $A = \text{K, Cs, Rb}$) is an intriguing new family of superconductors which exhibit many similar features to the cuprate and iron-based unconventional superconductor families. Yet in contrast to these systems, no charge or magnetic ordering has been observed which could provide the electronic correlations presumed necessary for an unconventional superconducting pairing mechanism - an absence which defies predictions of first principles models. We report the results of neutron scattering experiments on polycrystalline $\text{K}_2\text{Cr}…
We report $^{31}$P NMR studies of an oriented polycrystalline superconductor of Ba$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ with $x\sim$ 0.4 ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 29 K) at $T$ = 14$-$325 K and $B_{0}$ = 1 and 5 T. The $^{31}$P Knight shift $K_{ab}$ at $B_{0}\perp c$ shows a nearly $T$-independent uniform spin susceptibility above $T_\mathrm{c}$ and a spin singlet decrease below $T_\mathrm{c}$. The $^{31}$P nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_{1}$ shows an asymptotic behavior of $a+bT$ ($a$ and $b$ are constants) at $T >$ 100 K and the minimum at 40 K with an upturn toward $T_\mathr…
Pressure is well known to significantly raise the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, in both iron pnictides and cuprate based superconductors. Little work has been done, however, on how pressure can affect the flux pinning and critical current density in the Fe-based superconductors. Here, we propose to use hydrostatic pressure to significantly enhance flux pinning and Tc in polycrystalline pnictide bulks. We have chosen Sr4V2O6Fe2As2 polycrystalline samples as a case study. We demonstrate that the hydrostatic pressure up to 1.2 GPa can not only significantly increase Tc from 15 K (un…
We fabricated (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 superconducting wires using the powder-in-tube method and hot isostatic pressing. By improving powder synthesis processes compared with previous studies, highly pure raw materials for the wire fabrication were obtained. The largest transport critical current density (Jc) reached 40 kAcm-2 at T = 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 100 kOe. This value exceeds not only the value of transport Jc of the previous (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wire but also those of all iron-based superconducting round wires. Improvements of polycrystalline powder synthesis play a key role for the enhancemen…
Ag-sheathed SmFeAsO0.7F0.3 (Sm-1111) superconducting wires were prepared by a one-step solid state reaction at temperatures as low as 850~900C, instead of commonly used temperatures of 1150~1250C. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the as-sintered samples is well indexed on the basis of tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type structure. We characterized transport critical current density Jc of the SmFeAsO0.7F0.3 wires in increasing and subsequently decreasing fields, by a resistive four-probe method. A transport Jc as high as ~1300 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K and self field has been observed for the first time in Sm-1111 …
A fast and furnace-free method of combustion synthesis is employed for the first time to synthesize iron-based superconductors. Using this method, Fe1.1Se1-xTex (0<=x<=1) samples can be prepared from self-sustained reactions of element powders in only tens of seconds. The obtained Fe1.1Se1-xTex samples show clear zero resistivity and corresponding magnetic susceptibility drop at around 10-14 K. The Fe1.1Se0.33Te0.67 sample shows the highest onset Tc of about 14 K, and its upper critical field is estimated to be approximately 54 T. Compared with conventional solid state reaction for preparing p…
The tetragonal FeSe phase is an intensively investigated iron based superconductor. In this study we examined the influence of Ag addition on the superconducting properties of selenium deficient polycrystalline FeSe0.94. The samples were obtained by solid state reaction and melting methods. XRD analysis shows the presence of tetragonal phase and EDX analysis establishes inhomogeneous Ag distribution in the grains. The superconducting properties were investigated by fundamental and third harmonic AC magnetic susceptibility. The intergranular critical current determined from AC magnetic suscepti…
Superconductors with persistent zero-resistance currents serve as permanent magnets for high-field applications requiring a strong and stable magnetic field, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The recent global helium shortage has quickened research into high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) materials that can be used without conventional liquid-helium cooling to 4.2 K. Herein, we demonstrate that 40-K-class metallic HTS magnesium diboride (MgB2) makes an excellent permanent bulk magnet, maintaining 3 T at 20 K for 1 week with an extremely high stability (<0.1 ppm/h). The magnetic fie…
