We report $^{31}$P NMR studies of an oriented polycrystalline superconductor of Ba$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ with $x\sim$ 0.4 ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 29 K) at $T$ = 14$-$325 K and $B_{0}$ = 1 and 5 T. The $^{31}$P Knight shift $K_{ab}$ at $B_{0}\perp c$ shows a nearly $T$-independent uniform spin susceptibility above $T_\mathrm{c}$ and a spin singlet decrease below $T_\mathrm{c}$. The $^{31}$P nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_{1}$ shows an asymptotic behavior of $a+bT$ ($a$ and $b$ are constants) at $T >$ 100 K and the minimum at 40 K with an upturn toward $T_\mathrm{c}$. The $a$ term in 1/$T_{1}$ indicates the presence of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The negative $θ$ = $-$15 K of the Curie-Weiss-type antiferromagnetic spin susceptibility $χ$($Q$) $\propto$ 1/($T$+$θ$) in the analysis of 1/$T_{1}T$ suggests antiferromagnetic instability in the superconducting state. Discussions are made from the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory for the spin fluctuations with interlayer correlation.
77Se and 87Rb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on Rb0.74Fe1.6Se2 reveal clearly distinct spectra originating from a majority antiferromagnetic (AF) and a minority metallic-superconducting (SC) phase. The very narrow NMR line of the SC phase evidences the absence of Fe vacancies and any trace of AF order. The Rb content of the SC phase is deduced from intensity measurements identifying Rb0.3(1)Fe2Se2 as the actual composition of the SC fraction. The resulting estimate of 0:15 electrons/Fe brings this class of superconductors 245 family closer to the other Fe-based superconductor fam…
We report 75As-NMR measurements of the ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2. 75As-NMR spectra clearly revealed that magnetic transition occurs at around 131 K in our samples, which corresponds to the emergence of spin density wave. Temperature dependence of the internal magnetic field suggests that the transition is likely of the first order. The critical-slowing-down phenomenon in the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 is not pronounced in this material.
We report 19-F NMR investigation of the new high temperature superconductor LaFeAsO(0.89)F(0.11) (Tc ~ 28K). We demonstrate that low frequency spin fluctuations exhibit pseudo gap behavior above Tc. We also deduce the London penetration depth lambda from NMR line broadening below Tc.
In the iron pnictide superconductors, theoretical calculations have consistently shown enhancements of the static magnetic susceptibility at both the stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) and in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) wavevectors. However, the possible existence of FM fluctuations has not yet been examined from a microscopic point of view. Here, using $^{75}$As NMR data, we provide clear evidence for the existence of FM spin correlations in both the hole- and electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ families of iron-pnictide superconductors. These FM fluctuations appear to compete with superconductivity …
We report systematic $^{75}$As NMR studies on LaFeAs(O$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$) ($0\le x\le0.14$). At $x=0.04$ near the phase boundary, from resistivity, spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, and NMR spectrum measurements, we found weak magnetic order at $T_N\simeq 30$ K. Antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations proved through $1/T_1$ are suppressed significantly with F-doping, and pseudogap behavior without pronounced AFM fluctuations is observed at $x=0.11$ where $T_c$ is maximum. This significant suppression of $1/T_1T$ upon F-doping while $T_c$ remains nearly unchanged suggests that low-energy AFM fluc…
We report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of the intercalated iron selenide superconductor (Tl, Rb)$_{y}$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_2$ ($T_c = 32$ K). Single-crystal measurements up to 480 K on both $^{77}$Se and $^{87}$Rb nuclei show a superconducting phase with no magnetic order. The Knight shifts $K$ and relaxation rates $1/T_1T$ increase very strongly with temperature above $T_c$, before flattening at 400 K. The quadratic $T$-dependence and perfect proportionality of both $K$ and $1/T_1T$ data demonstrate their origin in paramagnetic moments. A minimal model for this pseudogap-like response is…
In Ba(Fe0.95Co0.05)2As2 all of the 75As NMR intensity at the paramagnetic resonance position vanishes abruptly below Tonset(SDW)=56 K, indicating that magnetic (spin density wave) order is present in all of the sample volume, despite bulk superconductivity below Tc=15 K. The two phases thus coexist homogeneously at the microscopic scale. In Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2, on the other hand, the signal loss below Tonset(SDW)~75 K is not complete, revealing that magnetic order is bound to finite-size areas of the sample, while the remaining NMR signal shows a clear superconducting response below Tc=37 K. Thus,…
The NMR results in iron pnictides BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 and Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 are analyzed based on the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) spin fluctuation theory. The temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate (T_1)^{-1} as well as the electrical resistivity is well reproduced by a SCR model where two-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations are dominant. The successful description of the crossover feature from non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid behavior strongly suggests that low-lying spin fluctuations in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 and Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 possess an itinerant AF nature, and …
The suppressed NMR coherence peak in the fullerene superconductors is explained in terms of the dampings in the superconducting state induced by the Coulomb interaction between conduction electrons. The Coulomb interaction, modelled in terms of the onsite Hubbard repulsion, is incorporated into the Eliashberg theory of superconductivity with its frequency dependence considered self-consistently at all temperatures. The vertex correction is also included via the method of Nambu. The frequency dependent Coulomb interaction induces the substantial dampings in the superconducting state and, conseq…
Chemical substitution during growth is a well-established method to manipulate electronic states of quantum materials, and leads to rich spectra of phase diagrams in cuprate and iron-based superconductors. Here we report a novel and generic strategy to achieve nonvolatile electron doping in series of (i.e. 11 and 122 structures) Fe-based superconductors by ionic liquid gating induced protonation at room temperature. Accumulation of protons in bulk compounds induces superconductivity in the parent compounds, and enhances the Tc largely in some superconducting ones. Furthermore, the existence of…
We report the results of $^{77}$Se--nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in $α$-FeSe, which exhibits a similar crystal structure to the LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ superconductor and shows superconductivity at 8 K. The nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows $T^3$ behavior below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ without a coherence peak. The $T_1T=$ const. behavior, indicative of the Fermi liquid state, can be seen in a wide temperature range above $T_c$. The superconductivity in $α$-FeSe is also an unconventional one as well as LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and related materials. The Fe…
We have performed 31P-NMR measurements on the s-wave superconductor LaRu4P12 to investigate the magnetic field effect of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 on a conventional full-gap superconductor. With increasing magnetic field, the Hebel-Slichter peak immediately below Tc in 1=T1 was suppressed, and the magnetic field dependence of 1/T1 at 0.8 K, well below Tc, was proportional to H2. These behaviors can be fully understood by the orbital pair-breaking effect in a single-band s-wave superconductor
We report systematic 57Fe-NMR and 75As-NMR/NQR studies on an underdoped sample (T_c=20 K), an optimally doped sample (T_c=28 K), and an overdoped sample (T_c=22 K) of oxygen-deficient iron (Fe)-based oxypnictide superconductor LaFeAsO_{1-y}$. A microscopic phase separation between superconducting domains and magnetic domains is shown to take place in the underdoped sample, indicating a local inhomogeneity in association with the density distribution of oxygen deficiencies. As a result, 1/T_1T in the normal state of the superconducting domain decreases significantly upon cooling at both the Fe …
In a conventional superconductor, the spin-lattice relaxation rate on all nuclei should have the same temperature dependence below Tc. We performed $^{23}$Na, $^{75}$As, and $^{59}$Co NMR studies on single crystals of NaFe0.95Co0.05As, and found that spin-lattice relaxation rates show very different temperature dependent power-law behavior on three sites. We propose that such site-dependent behavior is due to the facts that the superconductor has two gaps of very different sizes. The power-law exponent of each nucleus is affected by the strength of the hyperfine coupling to the small gap. We a…
Impurity nuclear spin relaxation is studied theoretically. A single impurity generates a bound state localized around the impurity atom in unconventional superconductors. With increasing impurity potential, the relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ is reduced by the impurity potential. However, it has a peak at low temperatures due to the impurity bound state. The peak disappears at non-impurity sites. The impurity site NMR measurement detecting a local electronic structure just on the impurity atom is very useful for identifying the unconventional pairing states.
We report ^{31}P and ^{139}La NMR studies of (La_{0.87}Ca_{0.13})FePO, which is a family member of the recently discovered superconductor LaFeAs(O_{1-x}F_x). In the normal state, Knight shift and $1/T_1T$ show that a Fermi-liquid state with moderate ferromagnetic fluctuations emerges below 30K. From 1/T_1T of ^{31}P and ^{139}La, quasi-two dimensional electronic structure is suggested, in which the FeP layer is more conductive than the LaO layer. In the superconducting (SC) state, although a clear Meissner signal was observed, 1/T_1T increases below T_c, in contrast to a decrease of 1/T_1T due…
We report a comprehensive 77Se NMR study of the structural, magnetic, and superconducting properties of a single crystalline sample of the newly discovered FeSe-based high temperature superconductor K(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2) (Tc=33K) in a broad temperature range up to 290 K. We will compare our results with those reported for FeSe (Tc=9K) and FeAs-based high Tc systems.
A new mechanism for relaxing the nuclear magnetic moments, in which a pair of spin-polarized BCS quasiparticles is emitted or absorbed, and which dominates at low temperature, is identified in type-II d-wave superconductors in an external magnetic field above Hc1. The results of the theory are compared with the NMR experiments on YBCO in high magnetic fields and found to agree without invoking antiferromagnetic order in the vortex core.
We have carried out direction-dependent ^{59}Co NMR experiments on a single crystal sample of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe in order to study the magnetic properties in the normal state. The Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements provide microscopic evidence that both static and dynamic susceptibilities are ferromagnetic with strong Ising anisotropy. We discuss that superconductivity induced by these magnetic fluctuations prefers spin-triplet pairing state.
We discuss the novel superconducting characteristics and unusual normal-state properties of iron (Fe)-based pnictide superconductors REFeAsO$_{1-y}$ (RE=La,Pr,Nd) and Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$($T_{c}=$ 38 K) by means of $^{57}$Fe-NMR and $^{75}$As-NQR/NMR. In the superconducting state of LaFeAsO$_{0.7}$ ($T_{c}=$ 28 K), the spin component of the $^{57}$Fe-Knight shift decreases to almost zero at low temperatures, which provide firm evidence of the superconducting state formed by spin-singlet Cooper pairing. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $(1/T_{1})$ in LaFeAsO$_{0.7}$ and Ba$_…
We report the first 17-O NMR studies of a triangular-lattice superconductor Na{1/3}CoO{2}-[4/3]H{2}O and the host material Na{x}CoO{2} (x=0.35 and 0.72). Knight shift measurements reveal that p-d hybridization induces sizable spin polarization in the O triangular-lattice layers. Water-intercalation makes CoO{2} planes homogeneous, and enhances low frequency spin fluctuations near T{c}=4.5 K at some finite wave-vectors different from both the ferromagnetic and ``120 degree'' modes.
We demonstrate that the anisotropy R of the paramagnetic spin fluctuations grows toward Tc at 75As sites in the optimally electron-doped superconductor Ba[(Fe0.92Co0.08)2]2As2, with stronger spin fluctuations along the c-axis. Our finding is in remarkable contrast with the case of high T$_c$ cuprates, where R is independent of temperature above Tc.
Site-dependent NMR relaxation time $T_1({\bf r})$ is calculated in the vortex state using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, taking account of possible "field-induced stripe'' states in which the magnetism arises locally around a vortex core in d-wave superconductivity. The recently observed huge enhancement $T_1^{-1}({\bf r})$ below $T_c$ at a core site in Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_6$ is explained. The field-induced stripe picture explains consistently other relevant STM and neutron experiments.
We report 125Te-NMR studies on a newly discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe2. Using a single crystal, we have measured the 125Te-NMR Knight shift K and spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 for fields along the three orthorhombic crystal axes. The data confirm a moderate Ising anisotropy for both the static (K) and dynamical susceptibilities (1/T1) in the paramagnetic state above about 20 K. Around 20 K, however, we have observed a sudden loss of NMR spin-echo signal due to sudden enhancement of the NMR spin-spin relaxation rate 1/T2, when the field is applied along the easy axis of magneti…
We present a 77Se NMR study of the newly discovered iron selenide superconductor KyFe2-xSe2, in which Tc = 32 K. Below Tc, the Knight shift 77K drops sharply with temperature, providing strong evidence for singlet pairing. Above Tc, Korringa-type relaxation indicates Fermi-liquid behavior. Our experimental results set strict constraints on the nature of possible theories for the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in this iron selenide system.
The effect of isoelectronic substitutions on the microscopic properties of LaFe1-xRuxAsO, for 0< x< 0.8, has been investigated by means of muSR and 139La NMR. It was found that Ru substitution causes a progressive reduction of the Nèel temperature (T_N) and of the magnetic order parameter without leading to the onset of superconductivity. The temperature dependence of 139La nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 can be suitably described within a two-band model. One band giving rise to the spin density wave ground-state, while the other one is characterized by weakly correlated electrons. …
We report the 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement of the hole-doped superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 with different lattice parameters and different superconducting volume fractions (Tc = 38K). 75As-NMR spectra revealed that the magnetically ordered and superconducting phases are microscopically separated. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the normal state reflects the existence of a large two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation. The 1/T1 in the superconducting state down to the lowest measurement temperature T varies close to T^3. In addition, it exhibits no cohere…
NMR longitudinal relaxation rates 1/T1 and Knight shifts K have been measured for superconducting samples of LaFe1-yCoyAsO1-xFx with y=0.0 and 0.0075 and for a nonsuperconducting metallic sample with y=0.1, where the x values are always fixed at 0.11. The temperature (T) dependence the relaxation rates 1/T1 of the superconducting samples has been found to be markedly different from the behavior 1/T1 T^(2.5-3.0) reported by many groups in the entire T range measured (from the temperature immediately below the superconducting transition temperature Tc down to (0.1-0.2)Tc). The nonexistence of th…
We report an NMR investigation of the superconductivity in BaFe(2)As(2) induced by Co doping (Tc=22K). We demonstrate that Co atoms form an alloy with Fe atoms and donate carriers without creating localized moments. Our finding strongly suggests that the underlying physics of iron-pnictide superconductors is quite different from the widely accepted physical picture of high Tc cuprates as doped Mott insulators. We also show a crossover of electronic properties into a low temperature pseudo-gap phase with a pseudo-gap Delta 560K, where chi(spin) constant and resisitivty T. The NMR Knight shift b…
We report nuclear magnetic resonance studies on the beta-pyrochlore oxide superconductor KOs2O6. The nuclear relaxation at the K sites is entirely caused by fluctuations of electric field gradient, which we ascribe to highly anharmonic low frequency oscillation (rattling) of K ions. A phenomenological analysis shows a crossover from overdamped to underdamped behavior of the rattling phonons with decreasing temperature and its sudden sharpening below the superconducting transition temperature Tc. Absence of the Hebel-Slichter peak in the relaxation rate at the O sites below Tc also indicates st…
We report 75As-NQR/NMR studies on the oxygen-deficient iron(Fe)-based oxypnictide superconductors LaFeAsO_{0.6} (T_c=28 K) along with the results on LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO_{0.75}(T_c=20 K) and NdFeAsO_{0.6}(T_c=53 K). Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 of 75As NQR at zero field on LaFeAsO_{0.6} has revealed a T^3 dependence below T_c upon cooling without the coherence peak just below T_c, evidencing the unconventional superconducting state with the line-node gap. We have found an intimate relationship between the nuclear quadrupole frequencyof 75As and T_c for four samples used in this study…
We study a model of a d-wave superconductor with strong potential scatterers in the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations and apply it to experimental nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) results on Zn impurities in the superconducting state of YBCO. We then focus on the contribution of impurity-induced paramagnetic moments, with Hubbard correlations in the host system accounted for in Hartree approximation. We show that local magnetism around individual impurities broadens the line, but quasiparticle interference between impurity states plays an important role in smearing out impurity satell…
We report the $^{75}$As-NQR and NMR studies on the iron arsenide superconductor Li$_{x}$FeAs with $T_{\rm c} \sim 17$ K. The spin lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_{1}$, decreases below $T_{\rm c}$ without a coherence peak, and can be fitted by gaps with s$^{\pm}$-wave symmetry in the presence of impurity scattering. In the normal state, both $1/T_{1}T$ and the Knight shift decrease with decreasing temperature but become constant below $T \leq 50 K$. Estimate of the Korringa ratio shows that the spin correlations are weaker than that in other families of iron arsenides, which may account for the l…
We report a first experimental evidence that a vortex in the high temperature superconductors (HTSC) traps a finite electric charge from the high resolution measurements of the nuclear quadrupole frequencies. In slightly overdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_7 the vortex is negatively charged by trapping electrons, while in underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 it is positively charged by expelling electrons. The sign of the trapped charge is opposite to the sign predicted by the conventional BCS theory. Moreover, in both materials, the deviation of the magnitude of the charge from the theory is also significant. These unex…
The vortex state in a single crystal of the layered organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF2Cu(NCS)2, where BEDT-TTF (or ET) is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene, was studied by 1H-NMR. Under a low field region around 0.75 T, the vortex glass-liquid transition was demonstrated by a diverging of the longitudinal nuclear spin relaxation rate and peak-broadening in spectra. Under a high field region near the upper critical field Hc2(0)~7 T, the curvature of nuclear spin relaxation curves showed a drastic change at the temperature where the emergence of the quantum vortex slush state was reported. …
Using a mix of numerical and analytic methods, we show that recent NMR $^{17}$O measurements provide detailed information about the structure of the charge-density wave (CDW) phase in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. We perform Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) calculations of both the local density of states and the orbitally resolved charge density, which are closely related to the magnetic and electric quadrupole contributions to the NMR spectrum, using a microscopic model that was shown previously to agree closely with x-ray experiments. The BdG results reproduce qualitative features of the exp…
The spin-lattice relaxation rate of nuclear magnetic resonance in a clean superconductor without inversion center is calculated for arbitrary pairing symmetry and band structure, in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling.
High-temperature superconductivity in Fe-based pnictides and chalcogenides has been one of the most significant recent discoveries in condensed matter physics and has attracted remarkable attention in the last decade. These materials are characterized by a complex fermiology and, as a result, feature a wide range of electronic properties as a function of different tuning parameters such as chemical doping, temperature and pressure. Along the path towards the comprehension of the physical mechanisms underlying this rich phenomenology, NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and NQR (nuclear quadrupole…
We have performed $^{125}$Te NMR on a single crystal of the novel layered superconductor Fe$_{1.04}$Te$_{0.67}$Se$_{0.33}$ for the first time. The spin parts of the Knight shifts for both $H // a$, $H // c$ are suppressed in the superconducting state, indicating the spin singlet superconductivity. At superconducting state, $1/T_{1}$ shows the power-law behavior ($\sim T^{3}$) without any coherent peaks. Observations of the residual density of state and the $T^{3}$-law indicate the presence of the line node in the superconducting gap. In the normal state, $1/T_{1}T$ which probes the \textbf{q}-…
We report results of 77Se NMR frequency shift in the normal state of the organic charge-transfer-salt k-(BETS)2FeBr4 which shows magnetic field-induced superconductivity (FISC). From a simple mean field analysis, we determined the field and the temperature dependences of the magnetization m_{pi} of the πconduction electrons on BETS molecules. We found that the Fe spins are antiferromagnetically coupled to the pi electrons and determined the exchange field to be J = -2.3T/mu_B. The exchange field from the fully saturated Fe moments (5 mu_B) is compensated by an external field of 12T. This is cl…
We report a 29Si-NMR study on the pressure-induced superconductivity (SC) in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) heavy-fermion compound CeIrSi3 without inversion symmetry. In the SC state at P=2.7-2.8 GPa, the temperature dependence of the nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 below Tc exhibits a T^3 behavior without any coherence peak just below Tc, revealing the presence of line nodes in the SC gap. In the normal state, 1/T_1 follows a \sqrt{T}-like behavior, suggesting that the SC emerges under the non-Fermi liquid state dominated by AFM spin fluctuations enhanced around quantum critical point …
By using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and ac-susceptibility, the characteristic correlation times for the vortex dynamics, in an iron-based superconductor, have been derived. Upon cooling, the vortex dynamics displays a crossover consistent with a vortex glass transition. The correlation times, in the fast motions regime, merge onto a universal curve which is fit by the Vogel-Fulcher law, rather than by an Arrhenius law. Moreover, the pinning barrier shows a weak dependence on the magnetic field which can be heuristically justified within a fragile glass scenario. In addition, the glass freezing…
An optical analysis reveals that the electronic correlations in the `parent' compounds of the iron pnictide superconductors are sufficiently strong to significantly impede the mobility of the electrons.
We present our NMR studies of double-layer hydrated cobalt oxides NaxCoO2-yH2O (x ~ 0.35, y ~ 1.3) with various Tc = 0 - 4.8 K and magnetic transition temperatures. High-resolution $^{1}$H NMR spectrum served as an evidence for the existence of H$_{3}$O$^{+}$ oxonium ions. $^{23}$Na nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates served to detect local field fluctuations sensitive to Tc. $^{59}$Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra served to classify the various Tc samples. From the classification by $^{59}$Co NQR frequency, the double-layer hydrated compounds were found to have two superconduct…
A new iron pnictide LiFeP superconductor was found. The compound crystallizes into a Cu2Sb structure containing an FeP layer showing superconductivity with maximum Tc of 6K. This is the first 111 type iron pnictide superconductor containing no arsenic. The new superconductor is featured with itinerant behavior at normal state that could helpful to understand the novel superconducting mechanism of iron pnictide compounds.
We present an NMR study of the effect of S substitution in the high Tc superconductor K(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2-z)S(z) in a temperature range up to 250 K. We present NMR Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 data, and compare our results to that of the non-substituted system K(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2).
We numerically study the spatially-resolved NMR around a single vortex in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 under the influence of the vortex core states is calculated for an s+p-wave Cooper pairing state. The result is compared with that for an s-wave pairing state.
A spin-triplet superconducting state mediated by ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations has been suggested to occur in the newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$. However, the recent neutron scattering measurements revealed the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations in UTe$_2$. Here, we report the $^{125}$Te nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of a single-crystal UTe$_2$, suggesting the coexistence of FM and AFM spin fluctuations in UTe$_2$. Owing to the two different Te sites in the compound, we conclude that the FM spin fluctuations are dominant within ladder…
Recent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements revealed the coexistence of stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin correlations in both the hole- and electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ families of iron-pnictide superconductors by a Korringa ratio analysis. Motivated by the NMR work, we investigate the possible existence of FM fluctuations in another iron pnictide superconducting family, Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. We re-analyzed our previously reported data in terms of the Korringa ratio and found clear evidence for the coexistence of stripe-type AFM and FM spin co…
We propose a unified description of cuprate and iron-based superconductivity. Consistency with magnetic structure inferred from neutron scattering implies significant constraints on the symmetry of the pairing gap for the iron-based superconductors. We find that this unification requires the orbital pairing formfactors for the iron arsenides to differ fundamentally from those for cuprates at the microscopic level.
We report the pressure dependences of the superconducting transition temperature (T_c) in several perovskite-type Fe-based superconductors through the resistivity measurements up to ~4 GPa. In Ca_4(Mg,Ti)_3Fe_2As_2O_y with the highest T_c of 47 K in the present study, the T_c keeps almost constant up to ~1 GPa, and starts to decrease above it. From the comparison among several systems, we obtained a tendency that low T_c with the longer a-axis length at ambient pressure increases under pressure, but high T_c with the shorter a-axis length at ambient pressure hardly increases. We also report th…
We report on a microscopic study of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor W$_3$Al$_2$C (with $T_c$ = 7.6 K), mostly by means of $^{27}$Al- and $^{13}$C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Since in this material the density of states at the Fermi level is dominated by the tungsten's 5$d$ orbitals, we expect a sizeable spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect. The normal-state electronic properties of W$_3$Al$_2$C resemble those of a standard metal, but with a Korringa product $1/(T_{1}T)$ significantly smaller than that of metallic Al, reflecting the marginal role played by $s$-electrons. In the supercon…
It is shown that a generic form of an antiferromagnetic wave function opens strong electron-phonon coupling channels in the iron-based superconductors. In the nonmagnetic state these channels exist locally on a single iron atom, but are canceled out between the two iron atoms in the primitive unit cell. Our findings are based on symmetry and the presence of an xz/yz Fermi surface near the M point and thus should be relevant for the known iron-based pnictide or chalcogenide superconductors.
In this review, the authors present a summary of experimental reports on newly discovered iron-based superconductors as they were known at the end of 2008. At the same time, this paper is intended to be useful for experimenters to know the current status of these superconductors. The authors introduce experimental results that reveal basic physical properties in the normal and superconducting states. The similarities and differences between iron-pnictide superconductors and other unconventional superconductors are also discussed.
We have performed $^{77}$Se NMR on a single crystal sample of the field induced superconductor $λ$-(BETS)$_{2}$FeCl$_{4}$. Our results obtained in the paramagnetic state provide a microscopic insight on the exchange interaction $J$ between the spins \textbf{s} of the BETS $π$ conduction electrons and the Fe localized $d$ spins \textbf{S}. The absolute value of the Knight shift \textbf{K} decreases when the polarization of the Fe spins increases. This reflects the ``negative'' spin polarization of the $π$ electrons through the exchange interaction $J$. The value of $J$ has been estimated from t…
The second class of high-temperature superconductors (HTSCs), iron-based pnictides and chalcogenides, necessarily contain Fe$_2$$X_2$ ("$X$" refers to a pnictogen or a chalcogen element) layers, just like the first class of HTSCs which possess the essential CuO$_2$ sheets. So far, dozens of iron-based HTSCs, classified into nine groups, have been discovered. In this article, the crystal-chemistry aspects of the known iron-based superconductors are reviewed and summarized by employing "hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB)" concept. Based on these understandings, we propose an alternative route …
The band structure of iron-based superconductors gives rise to yet another scenario for the appearance of Dirac fermions. A viewpoint on "Observation of Dirac cone electronic dispersion in BaFe2As2" (Richard et.al., PRL 104, 137001 (2010)).
In nonsuperconducting, metallic paramagnetic SrCo2As2, inelastic neutron scattering measurements have revealed strong stripe-type $χ$(q) = ($π$,0) antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin correlations. Here, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on 59Co and 75As nuclei, we demonstrate that stronger ferromagnetic (FM) spin correlations coexist in SrCo2As2. Our NMR data are consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations which show enhancements at both q = ($π$,0) and the in-plane FM q = 0 wavevectors in static magnetic susceptibility $χ$(q). We suggest that the strong FM fluctuat…
We have made a phase-sensitive measurement on the corner junction of the iron-based superconductor BaFe1.8Co0.2As2, and observed the typical Fraunhofer-like diffraction pattern. The result suggests that there is no phase shift between the a-c face and b-c face of a crystal, which indicates that the superconducting wavefunction of the iron based superconductor is different from that of a cuprate superconductor.
