We report on (magneto)-transport experiments in chemically derived narrow graphene nanoribbons under high magnetic fields (up to 60 Tesla). Evidences of field-dependent electronic confinement features are given, and allow estimating the possible ribbon edge symmetry. Besides, the measured large positive magnetoconductance indicates a strong suppression of backscattering induced by the magnetic field. Such scenario is supported by quantum simulations which consider different types of underlying disorders (smooth edge disorder and long range Coulomb scatters).
Bottom-up approaches allow the production of ultra-narrow and atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), with electronic and optical properties controlled by the specific atomic structure. Combining Raman spectroscopy and ab-initio simulations, we show that GNR width, edge geometry and functional groups all influence their Raman spectra. The low-energy spectral region below 1000 cm-1 is particularly sensitive to edge morphology and functionalization, while the D peak dispersion can be used to uniquely fingerprint the presence of GNRs, and differentiates them from other sp2 carbon nanostru…
Profiles of the spin and orbital angular momentum accumulations induced by a longitudinally applied electric field are explored in nanoribbons of $p$-band systems with a honeycomb lattice. We show that nanoribbons with zigzag borders can exhibit orbital magnetoelectric effects. More specifically, we have found that purely orbital magnetization oriented perpendicularly to the ribbon may be induced in these systems by means of the external electric field, when sublattice symmetry is broken. The effect is rather general and may occur in other multi-orbital materials.
The orbital magnetoelectric effect (OME) generically refers to the appearance of an orbital magnetization induced by an applied electric field. Here, we show that nanoribbons of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with zigzag (ZZ) edges may exhibit a sizeable OME activated by an electric field applied along the ribbons' axis. We examine nanoribbons extracted from a monolayer (1L) and a bilayer (2L) of MoS$_2$ in the trigonal (H) structural phase. Transverse profiles of the induced orbital angular momentum accumulations are calculated to first order in the longitudinally applied electric fi…
For graphene nanoribbons with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, the peculiar magnetic response due to the presence of a magnetization and geometric confinement are analyzed within a tight-binding model. We observe a sizable transverse susceptibility that can be considered as a gate voltage-induced magnetoelectric torque without the need of a bias voltage, with different directions for zigzag and armchair ribbons. The local torque generates non-collinear spin polarization between the two edges and/or along the ribbon, and the net torque averages to zero if the magnetization is homogeneous. Neverthele…
We study the optical response of nanoribbons made from the $α-T_3$ lattice under a weak magnetic field in the terahertz to far-infrared regime. It is found that the magnetic field can open a gap in the band structure and induce a new absorption peak with much reduced frequency in metallic armchair ribbons and a class of zigzag ribbons with particular boundaries. This tunable magneto-optical modulation effect is attributed to the interband transitions between the flat band and the propagating bands. By contrast, this magnetic modulation of gap opening and optical conductance is much weaker in m…
Inspired by recent experiments where electron transport was measured across graphene nanoribbons (GNR) suspended between a metal surface and the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope [Koch \textit{et al}., Nat. Nanotechnol. {\bf 7}, 713 (2012)], we present detailed first-principles simulations of inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) of long pristine and defected armchair and zigzag nanoribbons under a range of charge carrier conditions. For the armchair ribbons we find two robust IETS signals around 169 and 196 mV corresponding to the D- and G-modes of Raman spectroscopy as well a…
By using non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method and tight-binding (TB) approximation, we investigated a perfect control on spin transport in a zigzag $α^{\prime}$-boron nanoribbon ($α^{\prime}$-BNR) as the must semi-conducting structure of borophene. It has been found that when an $α^{\prime}$-BNR is exposed to an out-of-plane exchange magnetic field, spin splitting occurs for both spin-up and spin-down states in specific ranges of energy. Therefore, the spin polarization of current could be controlled by adjusting the energy of incoming electrons by means of an external back-gate volt…
The energy spectrum and eigenstates of single-layer black phosphorous nanoribbons in the presence of perpendicular magnetic field and in-plane transverse electric field are investigated by means of a tight-binding method and the effect of different types of edges is analytically examined. A description based on a new continuous model is proposed by expansion of the tight-binding model in the long-wavelength approximation. The wavefunctions corresponding to the flatband part of the spectrum are obtained analytically and are shown to approach agree well with the numerical results from the tight-…
The magneto-optical response of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), including excitonic effects, is studied using a nanoribbon geometry. We compute the diagonal optical conductivity and the Hall conductivity. Comparing the excitonic optical Hall conductivity to results obtained in the independent particle approximation, we find an increase in the amplitude corresponding to one order of magnitude when excitonic effects are included. The Hall conductivities are used to calculate Faraday rotation spectra for MoS2 and WSe2. Finally, we have also calculated the diamagnetic shift of t…
We investigate the transport properties of pristine zigzag-edged borophene nanoribbons (ZBNRs) of different widths, using the fist-principles calculations. We choose ZBNRs with widths of 5 and 6 as odd and even widths. The differences of the quantum transport properties are found, where even-N BNRs and odd-N BNRs have different current-voltage relationships. Moreover, the negative differential resistance (NDR) can be observed within certain bias range in 5-ZBNR, while 6-ZBNR behaves as metal whose current rises with the increase of the voltage. The spin filter effect of 36% can be revealed whe…
The electronic structure and conductance of substitutionally edge-doped zigzag silicene nanoribbons (ZSiNRs) are investigated using the nonequilibrium Green's function method combined with the density functional theory. Two-probe systems of ZSiNRs in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states are considered. Doping effects of elements from groups III and V, in a parallel or antiparallel magnetic configuration of the two electrodes, are discussed. Switching on and off the external magnetic field, we may convert the metallic ferromagnetic ZSiNRs into insulating antiferromagnetic ZSiNRs. In …
We study magneto-optical (MO) properties of a semi-Dirac nanoribbon in presence of a perpendicular magnetic field using Kernel Polynomial Method (KPM) based on the Keldysh formalism in the experimental (terahertz frequency) regime. For comparison, we have also included results for the Dirac systems as well, so that the interplay of the band structure deformation and MO conductivities can be studied. We have found that the MO conductivity shows features in the semi-Dirac system that are quite distinct from the Dirac case near the ultra-violet and the visible regimes. The real parts of the longi…
Spin-hosting graphene nanostructures are promising metal-free systems for elementary quantum spintronic devices. Conventionally, spins are protected from quenching by electronic bandgaps, which also hinder electronic access to their quantum state. Here, we present a narrow graphene nanoribbon substitutionally doped with boron heteroatoms that combines a metallic character with the presence of localized spin 1/2 states in its interior. The ribbon was fabricated by on-surface synthesis on a Au(111) substrate. Transport measurements through ribbons suspended between the tip and the sample of a sc…
Topological surface states of three-dimensional topological insulator nanoribbons and their distinct magnetoconductance properties are promising for topoelectronic applications and topological quantum computation. A crucial building block for nanoribbon-based circuits are three-terminal junctions. While the transport of topological surface states on a planar boundary is not directly affected by an in-plane magnetic field, the orbital effect cannot be neglected when the surface states are confined to the boundary of a nanoribbon geometry. Here, we report on the magnetotransport properties of su…
Quantum-mechanical calculations of electron magneto-transport in ideal graphene nanoribbons are presented. In noninteracting theory, it is predicted that an ideal ribbon that is attached to wide leads should reveal Fabry-Perot conductance oscillations in magnetic field. In the theory with Coulomb interaction taken into account, the oscillation pattern should rather be determined by the Aharonov-Bohm interference effect. Both of these theories predict the formation of quasi-bound states, albeit of different structures, inside the ribbon because of strong electron scattering on the interfaces be…
The effect of edge modification of armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) on the collective excitations are theoretically investigated. The tight-binding method is employed in conjunction with the dielectric function. Unconventional plasmon modes and their association with the flat bands of the specially designed AGNRs are thoroughly studied. We demonstrate the robust relationship between the novel collective excitations and both the type and period of the edge modification. Additionally, we reveal that the main features displayed in the (momentum, frequency)-phase diagrams for both single-part…
Here we comprehensively investigate Landau levels, Hofstadter butterfly and transport properties of a semi-Dirac nanoribbon in a perpendicular magnetic field using a recently developed real-space implementation of the Kubo formula based on Kernel Polynomial Method. A Dirac ribbon is considered to compare and contrast our results for a semi-Dirac system. We find that the Landau levels being non-equidistant from each other for the semi-Dirac case (true for a Dirac as well), the flatness of the energy bands vanishes in the bulk and becomes dispersive for a semi-Dirac ribbon in contrast to a Dirac…
A review work is done for electronic and optical properties of graphene nanoribbons in magnetic, electric, composite, and modulated fields. Effects due to the lateral confinement, curvature, stacking, non-uniform subsystems and hybrid structures are taken into account. The special electronic properties, induced by complex competitions between external fields and geometric structures, include many one-dimensional parabolic subbands, standing waves, peculiar edge-localized states, width- and field-dependent energy gaps, magnetic-quantized quasi-Landau levels, curvature-induced oscillating Landau…
The transport properties of non-trivial spin textures are coming under closer scrutiny as the amount of experimental data and theoretical simulations is increasing. To extend the commonly accepted yet simplifying and approximate picture of transport effects taking place in systems with spatially varying magnetization, it is important to understand the transport properties of building blocks for spin textures $-$ the homochiral spin-spiral states. In this work, by referring to phenomenological symmetry arguments based on the gradient expansion, and explicit calculations within the Kubo framewor…
While chiral magnetic skyrmions have been attracting significant attention in the past years, recently, a new type of a chiral particle emerging in thin films $-$ a chiral bobber $-$ has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. Here, based on theoretical arguments, we provide a clear pathway to utilizing chiral bobbers for the purposes of future spintronics by uncovering that these novel chiral states possess inherent transport fingerprints that allow for their unambiguous electrical detection in systems comprising several types of chiral states. We reveal that unique transpor…

We report the fabrication and characterization of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) made of Sb-doped Bi2Se3 topological insulator (TI) nanoribbon (NR) contacted with PbIn superconducting electrodes. When an external magnetic field was applied along the NR axis, the TI NR exhibited periodic magneto-conductance oscillations, the so-called Aharonov-Bohm oscillations, owing to one-dimensional subbands. Below the superconducting transition temperature of PbIn electrodes, we observed supercurrent flow through TI NR-based SQUID. The critical current periodically modulates with a m…
