There are several famous unsolved conjectures about the chromatic number that were relaxed and already proven to hold for the fractional chromatic number. We discuss similar relaxations for the topological lower bound(s) of the chromatic number. In particular, we prove that such a relaxed version is true for the Behzad-Vizing conjecture and also discuss the conjectures of Hedetniemi and of Hadwiger from this point of view. For the latter, a similar statement was already proven in an earlier paper of the first author with G. Tardos, our main concern here is that the so-called odd Hadwiger conjecture looks much more difficult in this respect. We prove that the statement of the odd Hadwiger conjecture holds for large enough Kneser graphs and Schrijver graphs of any fixed chromatic number.
We show that no tree on twenty vertices with maximum degree ten has Schur positive chromatic symmetric function, thereby providing a counterexample to a conjecture from the paper "Schur and e-positivity of trees and cut vertices".
Hadwiger's famous coloring conjecture states that every $t$-chromatic graph contains a $K_t$-minor. Holroyd [Bull. London Math. Soc. 29, (1997), pp. 139--144] conjectured the following strengthening of Hadwiger's conjecture: If $G$ is a $t$-chromatic graph and $S \subseteq V(G)$ takes all colors in every $t$-coloring of $G$, then $G$ contains a $K_t$-minor rooted at $S$. We prove this conjecture in the first open case of $t=4$. Notably, our result also directly implies a stronger version of Hadwiger's conjecture for $5$-chromatic graphs as follows: Every $5$-chromatic graph contains a $K_5$-mi…
Let $G=(V(G), E(G))$ be a multigraph with maximum degree $Δ(G)$, chromatic index $χ'(G)$ and total chromatic number $χ''(G)$. The Total Coloring conjecture proposed by Behzad and Vizing, independently, states that $χ''(G)\leq Δ(G)+μ(G) +1$ for a multigraph $G$, where $μ(G)$ is the multiplicity of $G$. Moreover, Goldberg conjectured that $χ''(G)=χ'(G)$ if $χ'(G)\geq Δ(G)+3$ and noticed the conjecture holds when $G$ is an edge-chromatic critical graph. By assuming the Goldberg-Seymour conjecture, we show that $χ''(G)=χ'(G)$ if $χ'(G)\geq \max\{ Δ(G)+2, |V(G)|+1\}$ in this note. Consequently, $χ'…
The $e$-positivity conjecture and the $e$-unimodality conjecture of chromatic quasisymmetric functions are proved for some classes of natural unit interval orders. Recently, J. Shareshian and M. Wachs introduced chromatic quasisymmetric functions as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions and conjectured the $e$-positivity and the $e$-unimodality of these functions. The $e$-positivity of chromatic quasisymmetric functions implies the $e$-positivity of corresponding chromatic symmetric functions, and our work resolves Stanley's conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions of $(3+…
A connected $n$-chromatic graph $G$ is double-critical if for all the edges $xy$ of $G$, the graph $G-x-y$ is $(n-2)$-chromatic. In 1966, Erd\H os and Lovász conjectured that the only double-critical $n$-chromatic graph is $K_n$. This conjecture remains unresolved for $n \ge 6.$ In this short note, we verify this conjecture for claw-free graphs $G$ of chromatic number $6$.
The chromatic polynomial is a well studied object in graph theory. There are many results and conjectures about the log-concavity of the chromatic polynomial and other polynomials related to it. The location of the roots of these polynomials has also been well studied. One famous result due to A. Sokal and C. Borgs provides a bound on the absolute value of the roots of the chromatic polynomial in terms of the highest degree of the graph. We use this result to prove a modification of a log-concavity conjecture due to F. Brenti. The original conjecture of Brenti was that the chromatic polynomial…
Gyarfas conjectured in 1985 that for all $k$, $l$, every graph with no clique of size more than $k$ and no odd hole of length more than $l$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $k$ and $l$. We prove three weaker statements: (1) Every triangle-free graph with sufficiently large chromatic number has an odd hole of length different from five; (2) For all $l$, every triangle-free graph with sufficiently large chromatic number contains either a 5-hole or an odd hole of length more than $l$; (3) For all $k$, $l$, every graph with no clique of size more than $k$ and sufficiently large chroma…
The main purpose of this note is to give a counterexample to the following conjecture, raised by Florian Frick [\textit{Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2020 (13), 4037-4061 (2020)}]. Conjecture. Let $r\geq 3$ and let $\mathcal{F}$ be a set system. Then $$χ\left(\textrm{KG}^r\left(\mathcal{F}_{r-stab}\right)\right)\geq\left\lceil\frac{cd_r\left(\mathcal{F}\right)}{r-1}\right\rceil.$$
It was conjectured by Ohba and confirmed recently by Noel et al. that, for any graph $G$, if $|V(G)|\le 2χ(G)+1$ then $χ_l(G)=χ(G)$. This indicates that the graphs with high chromatic number are chromatic-choosable. We show that this is also the case for uniform hypergraphs and further propose a generalized version of Ohba's conjecture: for any $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with $r\geq 2$, if $|V(H)|\le rχ(H)+r-1$ then $χ_l(H)=χ(H)$. We show that the condition of the proposed conjecture is sharp by giving two classes of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ with $|V(H)|= rχ(H)+r$ and $χ_l(H)>χ(H)$. To supp…
The detour order of a graph $G$, denoted $τ(G)$, is the order of a longest path in $G$. A partition $(A, B)$ of $V(G)$ such that $τ(\langle A \rangle) \leq a$ and $τ(\langle B \rangle) \leq b$ is called an $(a, b)$-partition of $G$. A graph $G$ is called $τ$-partitionable if $G$ has an $(a, b)$-partition for every pair $(a, b)$ of positive integers such that $a + b = τ(G)$. The well-known Path Partition Conjecture states that every graph is $τ$-partitionable. In \cite{df07} Dunber and Frick have shown that if every 2-connected graph is $τ$-partitionable then every graph is $τ$-partitionable. I…
Hadwiger's conjecture asserts that every graph without a $K_t$-minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. It is known that the exact version of Hadwiger's conjecture does not extend to list coloring, but it has been conjectured by Kawarabayashi and Mohar (2007) that there exists a constant $c$ such that every graph with no $K_t$-minor has list chromatic number at most $ct$. More specifically, they also conjectured that this holds for $c=\frac{3}{2}$. Refuting the latter conjecture, we show that the maximum list chromatic number of graphs with no $K_t$-minor is at least $(2-o(1))t$, and hence $c \ge 2$ in the…
The total chromatic number conjecture which has appeared in a few hundred articles and in numerous books thus far is now one of the classic mathematical unsolved problems. It appears that many authors coincidentally have attributed it to Professor M. Behzad and/or to Professor V. G. Vizing. Eventually after four decades, Professor A. Soifer investigated the origin of this conjecture; published his findings in The Mathematical Coloring Book - 2009; and stated that, "In my opinion this unquestionably merits the joint credit to Vizing and Behzad." After checking all the arguments presented and th…
In 1976 Simmons conjectured that every coloring of a 2-dimensional sphere of radius strictly greater than $1/2$ in three colors has a couple of monochromatic points at the distance 1 apart. We prove this conjecture.
The Gyarfas-Sumner conjecture says that for every forest $H$, there is a function $f$ such that if $G$ is $H$-free then $χ(G)\le f(ω(G))$ (where $χ, ω$ are the chromatic number and the clique number of $G$). Louis Esperet conjectured that, whenever such a statement holds, $f$ can be chosen to be a polynomial. The Gyarfas-Sumner conjecture is only known to be true for a modest set of forests $H$, and Esperet's conjecture is known to be true for almost no forests. For instance, it is not known when $H$ is a five-vertex path. Here we prove Esperet's conjecture when each component of $H$ is a star…
Wegner conjectured in 1977 that the square of every planar graph with maximum degree at most $3$ is $7$-colorable. We prove this conjecture using the discharging method and computational techniques to verify reducible configurations.
We outline some ongoing work related to a conjecture of Reed \cite{reed97} on $ω$, $Δ$, and $χ$. We conjecture that the complement of a counterexample $G$ to Reed's conjecture has connectivity on the order of $\log(|G|)$. We prove that this holds for a family (parameterized by $ε> 0$) of relaxed bounds; the $ε= 0$ limit of which is Reed's upper bound.
The square $G^2$ of a graph $G$ is the graph defined on $V(G)$ such that two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent in $G^2$ if the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is at most 2. Let $χ(H)$ and $χ_{\ell}(H)$ be the chromatic number and the list chromatic number of $H$, respectively. A graph $H$ is called {\em chromatic-choosable} if $χ_{\ell} (H) = χ(H)$. It is an interesting problem to find graphs that are chromatic-choosable. Motivated by the List Total Coloring Conjecture, Kostochka and Woodall (2001) proposed the List Square Coloring Conjecture which states that $G^2$ is chromatic-choosable …
We prove that for every $n$, there is a graph $G$ with $χ(G) \geq n$ and $ω(G) \leq 3$ such that every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ with $ω(H) \leq 2$ satisfies $χ(H) \leq 4$. This disproves a well-known conjecture. Our construction is a digraph with bounded clique number, large dichromatic number, and no induced directed cycles of odd length at least 5.
A well-known open problem in graph theory asks whether Stanley's chromatic symmetric function, a generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph, distinguishes between any two non-isomorphic trees. Previous work has proven the conjecture for a class of trees called spiders. This paper generalizes the class of spiders to $n$-spiders, where normal spiders correspond to $n = 1$, and verifies the conjecture for $n = 2$.
A star edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring of $G$ without bichromatic paths or cycles of length four. The it star chromatic index, $χ_{st}^{'} (G ),$ of $G$ is the minimum number $k$ for which $G$ has a star edge coloring by $k$ colors. In \cite{LB}, L. Bezegov$\acute{a}$ et al. conjectured that $χ_{st}^{'} (G )\leq \lfloor\frac{3Δ}{2}\rfloor+1$ when $G$ is an outerplanar graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3.$ In this paper we obtained that $χ_{st}^{'}(G) \leq Δ+6$ when $G$ is an 2-connected outerplanar graph with diameter 2 or 3. If $G$ is an 2-connected outerplanar graph wit…
Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ(G)$. A subgraph $H$ of $G$ is overfull if $|E(H)|>Δ(G)\lfloor |V(H)|/2 \rfloor$. Chetwynd and Hilton in 1985 conjectured that a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $Δ(G)>n/3$ has chromatic index $Δ(G)$ if and only if $G$ contains no overfull subgraph. Glock, Kühn and Osthus in 2016 showed that the conjecture is true for dense quasirandom graphs with even order, and they conjectured that the same should hold for such graphs with odd order. In this paper, we show that the conjecture of Glock, Kühn and Osthus is affirmative.
We investigate chromatic symmetric functions in the relation to the algebra $Γ$ of symmetric functions generated by Schur $Q$-functions. We construct natural bases of $Γ$ in terms of chromatic symmetric functions. We also consider the $p$-positivity of skew Schur $Q$-functions and find a class of $p$-positive ribbon Schur $Q$-functions, making a conjecture that they are \emph{all}. We include many concrete computational results that support our conjecture.
Given a graph $G$ possibly with multiple edges but no loops, denote by $Δ$ the {\it maximum degree}, $μ$ the {\it multiplicity}, $χ'$ the {\it chromatic index} and $χ_f'$ the {\it fractional chromatic index} of $G$, respectively. It is known that $Δ\le χ_f' \le χ' \le Δ+ μ$, where the upper bound is a classic result of Vizing. While deciding the exact value of $χ'$ is a classic NP-complete problem, the computing of $χ_f'$ is in polynomial time. In fact, it is shown that if $χ_f' > Δ$ then $χ_f'= \max \frac{|E(H)|}{\lfloor |V(H)|/2\rfloor}$, where the maximality is over all induced subgraphs $H…
The square $G^2$ of a graph $G$ is the graph defined on $V(G)$ such that two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent in $G^2$ if the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is at most 2. Let $χ(H)$ and $χ_l(H)$ be the chromatic number and the list chromatic number of $H$, respectively. A graph $H$ is called {\em chromatic-choosable} if $χ_l (H) = χ(H)$. It is an interesting problem to find graphs that are chromatic-choosable. Kostochka and Woodall \cite{KW2001} conjectured that $χ_l(G^2) = χ(G^2)$ for every graph $G$, which is called List Square Coloring Conjecture. In this paper, we give infinitely man…
An odd hole in a graph is an induced subgraph which is a cycle of odd length at least five. In 1985, A. Gyarfas made the conjecture that for all t there exists n such that every graph with no K_t subgraph and no odd hole is n-colourable. We prove this conjecture.
A $50$ years unsolved conjecture by Hedetniemi [{\it Homomorphisms of graphs and automata, \newblock {\em Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Michigan}, 1966}] asserts that the chromatic number of the categorical product of two graphs $G$ and $H$ is $\min\{χ(G),χ(H)\}$. The present authors [{\it On the chromatic number of general {K}neser hypergraphs. \newblock {\em Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B}, 2015.}] introduced the altermatic and the strong altermatic number of graphs as two tight lower bounds for the chromatic number of graphs. In this work, we prove a relaxation of Hedetniemi's co…
We prove several results about three families of graphs. For queen graphs, defined from the usual moves of a chess queen, we find the edge-chromatic number in almost all cases. In the unproved case, we have a conjecture supported by a vast amount of computation, which involved the development of a new edge-coloring algorithm. The conjecture is that the edge-chromatic number is the maximum degree, except when simple arithmetic forces the edge-chromatic number to be one greater than the maximum degree. For Mycielski graphs, we strengthen an old result that the graphs are Hamiltonian by showing t…
The $b$-chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $b(G)$, is the largest positive integer $k$ such that there exists a proper coloring for G with $k$ colors in which every color class contains at least one vertex adjacent to some vertex in each of the other color classes, such a vertex is called a dominant vertex. The $f$-chromatic vertex number of a $d$-regular graph $G$, denoted by $f(G)$, is the maximum number of dominant vertices of distinct colors in a proper coloring with $d+1$ colors. El Sahili and Kouider conjectured that $b(G)=d+1$ for any $d$-regular graph $G$ of girth 5. We study …
Tree-chromatic number is a chromatic version of treewidth, where the cost of a bag in a tree-decomposition is measured by its chromatic number rather than its size. Path-chromatic number is defined analogously. These parameters were introduced by Seymour (JCTB 2016). In this paper, we survey all the known results on tree- and path-chromatic number and then present some new results and conjectures. In particular, we propose a version of Hadwiger's Conjecture for tree-chromatic number. As evidence that our conjecture may be more tractable than Hadwiger's Conjecture, we give a short proof that ev…
For a graph $G$, let $χ(G)$ denote its chromatic number and $σ(G)$ denote the order of the largest clique subdivision in $G$. Let H(n) be the maximum of $χ(G)/σ(G)$ over all $n$-vertex graphs $G$. A famous conjecture of Hajós from 1961 states that $σ(G) \geq χ(G)$ for every graph $G$. That is, $H(n) \leq 1$ for all positive integers $n$. This conjecture was disproved by Catlin in 1979. Erdős and Fajtlowicz further showed by considering a random graph that $H(n) \geq cn^{1/2}/\log n$ for some absolute constant $c>0$. In 1981 they conjectured that this bound is tight up to a constant factor in t…
Hadwiger Conjecture has been an open problem for over a half century1,6, which says that there is at most a complete graph Kt but no Kt+1 for every t-colorable graph. A few cases of Hadwiger Conjecture, such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-colorable graphs have been completely proved to convince all1-5, but the proofs are tremendously difficult for over the 5-colorable graph6,7. Although the development of graph theory inspires scientists to understand graph coloring deeply, it is still an open problem for over 7-colorable graphs6,7. Therefore, we put forward a brand new chromatic graph configuration and …
A connected $t$-chromatic graph $G$ is \dfn{double-critical} if $G \backslash\{u, v\}$ is $(t-2)$-colorable for each edge $uv\in E(G)$. A long standing conjecture of Erdős and Lovász that the complete graphs are the only double-critical $t$-chromatic graphs remains open for all $t\ge6$. Given the difficulty in settling Erdős and Lovász's conjecture and motivated by the well-known Hadwiger's conjecture, Kawarabayashi, Pedersen and Toft proposed a weaker conjecture that every double-critical $t$-chromatic graph contains a $K_t$ minor and verified their conjecture for $t\le7$. Albar and Gonçalves…
Extending a recent breakthrough of Shitov, we prove that the chromatic number of the tensor product of two graphs can be a constant factor smaller than the minimum chromatic number of the two graphs. More precisely, we prove that there exists an absolute constant $δ>0$ such that for all $c$ sufficiently large, there exist graphs $G$ and $H$ with chromatic number at least $(1+δ)c$ for which $χ(G \times H) \le c$.
A class of graphs is $χ$-bounded if there is a function $f$ such that $χ(G)\le f(ω(G))$ for every induced subgraph $G$ of every graph in the class, where $χ,ω$ denote the chromatic number and clique number of $G$ respectively. In 1987, Gyárfás conjectured that for every $c$, if $\mathcal{C}$ is a class of graphs such that $χ(G)\le ω(G)+c$ for every induced subgraph $G$ of every graph in the class, then the class of complements of members of $\mathcal{C}$ is $χ$-bounded. We prove this conjecture. Indeed, more generally, a class of graphs is $χ$-bounded if it has the property that no graph in th…
The dichromatic number of a graph $G$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that there exists an orientation of the edges of $G$ such that for every partition of the vertices into fewer than $k$ parts, at least one of the parts must contain a directed cycle under this orientation. In 1979, Erdős and Neumann-Lara conjectured that if the dichromatic number of a graph is bounded, so is its chromatic number. We make the first significant progress on this conjecture by proving a fractional version of the conjecture. While our result uses stronger assumption about the fractional chromatic number, it also …
In this note, we introduce a new method for constructing graphs with high chromatic number and small clique. Indeed, via this method, we present a new proof for the well-known Kneser's conjecture.
We conjecture that any graph $G$ with treewidth~$k$ and maximum degree $Δ(G)\geq k + \sqrt{k}$ satisfies $χ'(G)=Δ(G)$. In support of the conjecture we prove its fractional version. We also show that any graph $G$ with treewidth~$k\geq 4$ and maximum degree $2k-1$ satisfies $χ'(G)=Δ(G)$, improving an old result of Vizing.
The chromatic polynomial $P(G,x)$ of a graph $G$ of order $n$ can be expressed as $\sum\limits_{i=1}^n(-1)^{n-i}a_{i}x^i$, where $a_i$ is interpreted as the number of broken-cycle free spanning subgraphs of $G$ with exactly $i$ components. The parameter $ε(G)=\sum\limits_{i=1}^n (n-i)a_i/\sum\limits_{i=1}^n a_i$ is the mean size of a broken-cycle-free spanning subgraph of $G$. In this article, we confirm and strengthen a conjecture proposed by Lundow and Markström in 2006 that $ε(T_n)< ε(G)<ε(K_n)$ holds for any connected graph $G$ of order $n$ which is neither the complete graph $K_n$ nor a t…
Kneser's 1955 conjecture -- proven by Lovász in 1978 -- asserts that in any partition of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ into $n-2k-3$ parts, one part contains two disjoint sets. Schrijver showed that one can restrict to significantly fewer $k$-sets and still observe the same intersection pattern. Alon, Frankl, and Lovász proved a different generalization of Kneser's conjecture for $r$ pairwise disjoint sets. Dolnikov generalized Lovász' result to arbitrary set systems, while Kříž did the same for the $r$-fold extension of Kneser's conjecture. Here we prove a common generalization of a…
We prove that for $n>k\geq 3$, if $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with chromatic number $k$ but any its proper subgraph has smaller chromatic number, then $G$ contains at most $n-k+3$ copies of cliques of size $k-1$. This answers a problem of Abbott and Zhou and provides a tight bound on a conjecture of Gallai.
We prove a 1985 conjecture of Gyárfás that for all $k,\ell$, every graph with sufficiently large chromatic number contains either a complete subgraph with $k$ vertices or an induced cycle of length at least $\ell$.
In the mid-1990s, Stanley and Stembridge conjectured that the chromatic symmetric functions of claw-free co-comparability (also called incomparability) graphs were e-positive. The quest for the proof of this conjecture has led to an examination of other, related graph classes. In 2013 Guay-Paquet proved that if unit interval graphs are e-positive, that implies claw-free incomparability graphs are as well. Inspired by this approach, we consider a related case and prove that unit interval graphs whose complement is also a unit interval graph are e-positive. We introduce the concept of strongly $…
We prove a conjecture of Andras Gyarfas, that for all k,t, every graph with clique number at most k and sufficiently large chromatic number has an odd hole of length at least t.
In a 1995 paper Richard Stanley defined $X_G$, the symmetric chromatic polynomial of a Graph $G=(V,E)$. He then conjectured that $X_G$ distinguishes trees; a conjecture which still remains open. $X_G$ can be represented as a certain collection of integer partitions of $|V|$ induced by each $S\subseteq E$, which is very approachable with the aid of a computer. Our research involved writing a computer program for efficient verification of this conjecture for trees up to 23 vertices. In this process, we also gather trees with matching collections of integer partitions of a fixed number of parts. …
In 1971, Tomescu conjectured [Le nombre des graphes connexes $k$-chromatiques minimaux aux sommets étiquetés, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 273 (1971), 1124--1126] that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $χ(G) = k \geq 4$ has at most $k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ $k$-colourings, where equality holds if and only if the graph is formed from $K_k$ by repeatedly adding leaves. In this note we prove (a strengthening of) the conjecture of Tomescu when $k=5$.
