Quasiparticle interference (QPI) in spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy provides a powerful method to detect orbital band structures and orbital ordering patterns in transition metal oxides. We use the $T$-matrix formalism to calculate the QPI spectra for the unconventional metamagnetic system of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ with a $t_{2g}$-orbital band structure. A detailed tight-binding model is constructed accounting for features such as spin-orbit coupling, bilayer splitting, and the staggered rotation of the RuO octahedra. The band parameters are chosen by fitting the calculated Fermi surfaces with those measured in the angular-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy experiment. The calculated quasiparticle interference at zero magnetic field exhibits a hollow square-like feature arising from the nesting of the quasi-1d $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbital bands, in agreement with recent measurements by J. Lee {\it et al.} (Nature Physics {\bf 5}, 800 (2009)). Rotational symmetry breaking in the nematic metamagnetic state also manifests in the quasi-particle interference spectra.
Activating metamagnetic transitions between ordered states in van der Waals magnets and devices bring great opportunities in spintronics. We show that external pressure, which enhances the interlayer hopping without introducing chemical disorders, triggers multiple metamagnetic transitions upon cooling in the topological van der Waals magnets Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_4$Te$_7$, where the antiferromagnetic interlayer superexchange coupling competes with the ferromagnetic interlayer coupling mediated by the antisite Mn spins. The temperature-pressure phase diagrams reveal that while the ordering tem…
We extend the study of the Fermi surface instability of the Pomeranchuk type into systems with orbital band structures, which are common features in transition metal oxides. Band hybridization significantly shifts the spectra weight of the Landau interactions from the conventional s-wave channel to unconventional non-s-wave channels, which results in anisotropic (nematic) Fermi surface distortions even with ordinary interactions in solids. The Ginzburg-Landau free energy is constructed by coupling the charge-nematic, spin-nematic and ferromagnetic order parameters together, which shows that ne…
A brief account of the zero temperature magnetic response of a system of strongly correlated electrons in strong magnetic field is given in terms of its quasiparticle properties. The scenario is based on the paramagnetic phase of the half-filled Hubbard model, and the calculations are carried out with the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) together with the numerical renormalization group (NRG). As well known, in a certain parameter regime one finds a magnetic susceptibility which increases with the field strength. Here, we analyze this metamagnetic response based on Fermi liquid parameters, w…
The mechanism underlying the enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient of quasiparticles at the first-order metamagnetic transition in UTe_2, reported by Miyake et al. in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 88, 063706 (2019), is discussed theoretically by taking into account the ferromagnetic order-parameter fluctuations on the basis of the Landau theory of phase transition. We find that the enhanced ferromagnetic spin fluctuation gives rise to the enhancement of the effective mass of the quasiparticles or the Sommerfeld coefficient γ,which is consistent with the experimental observations. At the same time, th…
Based on the periodic Anderson model, it is shown that the competition between the quenching of magnetic moments by local quantum spin fluctuations and a magnetic exchange interaction caused by the virtual exchange of pair excitations of quasiparticles in spin channels is responsible for the metamagnetic crossover in CeRu_2Si_2, cooperated with the electron-lattice interaction. The strength of the exchange interaction is proportional to the bandwidth of quasiparticles and its sign changes with increasing magnetizations; it is antiferromagnetic in the absence of magnetizations, whereas it is fe…
Heavy fermions represent an archetypal example of strongly correlated electron systems which, due to entanglement among different interactions, often exhibit exotic and fascinating physics involving Kondo screening, magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. Here we report a comprehensive study on the transport and thermodynamic properties of a cerium-based heavy fermion compound CeBi$_2$ which undergoes an anti-ferromagnetic transition at $T_N$ $\sim$ 3.3 K. Its high temperature paramagnetic state is characterized by an enhanced heat capacity with Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ over 200 mJ/m…
Tuning of electronic density-of-states singularities is a common route to unconventional metal physics. Conceptually, van Hove singularities are realized only in clean two-dimensional systems. Little attention has therefore been given to the disordered (dirty) limit. Here, we provide a magnetotransport study of the dirty metamagnetic system calcium-doped strontium ruthenate. Fermi liquid properties persist across the metamagnetic transition, but with an unusually strong variation of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. This is revealed by a strong decoupling of inelastic electron scattering and electroni…
We show that the metamagnetic transition in Sr$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ bifurcates into two transitions as the field is rotated away from the conducting planes. This two-step process comprises partial or total alignment of moments in ferromagnetic bands followed by an itinerant metamagnetic transition whose critical field increases with rotation. Evidence for itinerant metamagnetism is provided by the Shubnikov-de Hass effect which shows a non-trivial evolution of the geometry of the Fermi surface and an enhancement of the quasiparticles effective-mass across the transition. The metamagnetic response…
A novel singular gauge transformation is developed for quasiparticles in the mixed state of a strongly type-II superconductor which permits a full solution of the problem at low and intermediate fields. For a periodic vortex lattice the natural low-energy quasiparticle states are Bloch waves rather than Landau levels discussed in the recent literature. The new representation elucidates the physics considerably and provides fresh insights into the spectral properties of such systems.
Field-angle dependent heat capacity of the non-magnetic borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C reveals a clear fourfold oscillation, the first observation of its kind. The observed angular variations were analyzed as a function of magnetic field angle, field intensity and temperature to provide its origin. The quantitative agreement between experiment and theory strongly suggests that we are directly observing nodal quasiparticles generated along <100> by the Doppler effect. The results demonstrate that field-angle heat capacity can be a powerful tool in probing the momentum-space gap structure in…
I consider the problem of the vortex contribution to quasiparticle transport in unconventional superconductors with line nodes, a nd argue that the magnetic field dependence of transport coefficients is fixed by the same scattering processes which limit low-temperature transport. I give no detailed calculations, but show that qualitatively correct results may be obtained in the limit of low temperatures and fields by simple physical arguments, based on estimates of the density of states and relaxation time in analogy with the zero-field case. I conclude with a brief discussion of the problem o…
We report measurements of in-plane electrical and thermal transport properties in the limit $T \rightarrow 0$ near the unconventional quantum critical point in the heavy-fermion metal $β$-YbAlB$_4$. The high Kondo temperature $T_K$ $\simeq$ 200 K in this material allows us to probe transport extremely close to the critical point, at unusually small values of $T/T_K < 5 \times 10^{-4}$. Here we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is obeyed at the lowest temperatures, implying that the Landau quasiparticles remain intact in the critical region. At finite temperatures we observe a non-Fermi liquid …
The combination of the local-density approximation (LDA) with the rotationally invariant slave-boson theory (RISB) is used to investigate the realistic correlated electronic structure of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. From Wannier-downfolding the low-energy band structure to a three-band model for the Ru($t_{2g}$) states, the interacting problem is solved including intra- and inter-orbital Hubbard terms as well as spin-flip and pair-hopping interactions. Therewith it is possible to obtain valuable insight into the orbital occupations, relevant local spin multiplets and the fermiology with increasing corre…
We analyze and overview several different unconventional quantum criticalities. One origin of the unconventionality is the proximity to first-order transitions. The border between the first-order and continuous transitions is described by a quantum tricritical point (QTCP) for symmetry-breaking transitions. One of the characteristic features is the concomitant divergence of order-parameter and uniform fluctuations in contrast to the conventional quantum critical point (QCP). Several puzzling non-Fermi-liquid properties are referred to be accounted for as in the cases of YbRh2Si2, CeRu2Si2 and …
In quantum field theory, we learn that fermions come in three varieties: Majorana, Weyl, and Dirac. Here we show that in solid state systems this classification is incomplete and find several additional types of crystal symmetry-protected free fermionic excitations . We exhaustively classify linear and quadratic 3-, 6- and 8- band crossings stabilized by space group symmetries in solid state systems with spin-orbit coupling and time-reversal symmetry. Several distinct types of fermions arise, differentiated by their degeneracies at and along high symmetry points, lines, and surfaces. Some nota…
At the low energy regime, the decay rate of two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions due to interactions can be written as $\mathrm{Im}Σ(ω) \propto |ω|^{x}$ at zero temperature. We find that the fermion system has: I) no sharp Fermi surface and no well-defined quasiparticle peak for $0<x<1/2$; II) a sharp Fermi surface but no well-defined quasiparticle peak for $1/2\leq x\leq 1$; III) both sharp Fermi surface and well-defined quasiparticle peak for $x>1$. In the presence of long-range gauge/Coulomb interaction or certain massless boson mode, the system exhibits unusual behavior belonging to cla…
We discuss a detailed phase diagram and other microscopic characteristics on the applied magnetic field - temperature (H_a-T) plane for a simple model of correlated fluid represented by a two-dimensional (2D) gas of heavy quasiparticles with masses dependent on the spin direction and the effective field generated by the electron correlations. The consecutive transitions between the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases are either continuous or discontinuous, depending on the values of H_a and T. In the latter case, weak metamagnetic transitions …
Quasiparticles in the vortex lattice of strongly type-II superconductors are investigated by means of a singular gauge transformation applied to the tight binding lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. We present a detailed derivation of the gauge invariant effective low energy Hamiltonian for the quasiparticle-vortex system and show how the physics of the "Doppler shift" and "Berry phase" can be incorporated at the Hamiltonian level by working in the singular gauge. In particular, we show that the "Berry phase" effect manifests itself in the effective Hamiltonian through a half-flux Aharon…
The presence of subphases in spin-density wave (SDW) phase of (TMTSF)2PF6 below T* ~ 4K has been suggested by several experiments but the nature of the new phase is still controversial. We have investigated the temperature dependence of the angular dependence of the magnetoresistance in the SDW phase which shows different features for temperatures above and below T*. For T > 4K the magnetoresistance can be understood in terms of the Landau quantization of the quasiparticle spectrum in a magnetic field, where the imperfect nesting plays the crucial role. We propose that below T* ~ 4K the new un…
The gap function in unconventional superconductors may vanish at points or lines in momentum space, permitting electronic excitations, termed nodal quasiparticles, to exist at temperatures well below the superconducting transition. In the vortex phase, the presence of nodal quasiparticles should be directly observable through the variation of the heat capacity with the angle between a magnetic field and the location of the zeroes of the gap. The heat capacity of candidate non-magnetic unconventional superconductors Lu(Y)Ni2B2C were found to exhibit fourfold oscillations with field angle, the f…
The electron dynamics in the normal state of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ is studied by inelastic light scattering over a wide range of doping. A strong anisotropy of the electron relaxation is found which cannot be explained by single-particle properties alone. The results strongly indicate the presence of an unconventional quantum-critical metal-insulator transition where "hot" (antinodal) quasiparticles become insulating while "cold" (nodal) quasiparticles remain metallic. A phenomenology is developed which allows a quantitative understanding of the Raman results and provides a scenario wh…
It is shown that certain fractionally-charged quasiparticles can be modeled on \(D-\)dimensional lattices in terms of unconventional yet simple Fock algebras of creation and annihilation operators. These unconventional Fock algebras are derived from the usual fermionic algebra by taking roots (the square root, cubic root, etc.) of the usual fermionic creation and annihilation operators. If the fermions carry non-Abelian charges, then this approach fractionalizes the Abelian charges only. In particular, the \(m\)th-root of a spinful fermion carries charge \(e/m\) and spin \(1/2\). Just like tak…
This Letter theoretically discusses quasiparticle states and nuclear spin relaxation rates $T_1^{-1}$ in a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ under a magnetic field applied parallel to the conduction chains. We study the effects of Josephson-type vortices on $T_1^{-1}$ by solving the Bogoliubov de Gennes equation for $p$-, $d$- or $f$-wave pairing interactions. In the presence of line nodes in pairing functions, $T_1^{-1}$ is proportional to $T$ in sufficiently low temperatures because quasiparticles induced by vortices at the Fermi energy relax spins. We also try to identi…
The analysis of Fourier-transformed scanning-tunneling-microscopy (STM) images with subatomic resolution is a common tool for studying properties of quasiparticle excitations in strongly correlated materials. While Fourier amplitudes are generally complex valued, earlier analysis mostly considered only their absolute values. Their complex phases were deemed random, and thus irrelevant, due to the unknown positions of impurities in the sample. Here we show how to factor out these random phases by analysing overlaps between Fourier amplitudes that differ by reciprocal lattice vectors. The result…
Dynamical information on spin degrees of freedom of proteins or solids can be obtained by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). A technique with similar versatility for charge degrees of freedom and their ultrafast correlations could move forward the understanding of systems like unconventional superconductors. By perturbing the superconducting state in a high-Tc cuprate using a femtosecond laser pulse, we generate coherent oscillations of the Cooper pair condensate which can be described by an NMR/ESR formalism. The oscillations are detected by transient broad-ba…
Specific heat and transport measurements have revealed an unconventional heavy-fermion (HF) state in SmOs4Sb12 single crystals. The electronic specific-heat coefficient (gamma=0.82 J/K^2mol) and the coefficient (A) of the quadratic temperature dependence of electrical resistivity are largely enhanced, although the ratio A/gamma^2 is reduced from the Kadowaki-Woods ratio of HF materials. Both gamma and A do not show any significant decrease in applied field in contrast with Ce-based HF compounds, suggesting an unconventional origin of the heavy quasiparticles. A weak ferromagnetic ordering sets…
We compute the tunneling conductance of graphene as measured by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with a normal/superconducting tip. We demonstrate that for undoped graphene with zero Fermi energy, the first derivative of the tunneling conductance with respect to the applied voltage is proportional to the density of states of the STM tip. We also show that the shape of the STM spectra for graphene doped with impurities depends qualitatively on the position of the impurity atom in the graphene matrix and relate this unconventional phenomenon to the pseudopsin symmetry of the Dirac quasipart…
Microwave conductivity experiments can directly measure the quasiparticle scattering rate in the superconducting state. We show that this, combined with knowledge of the Fermi surface geometry, allows one to distinguish between closely related superconducting order parameters, e.g., d$_{x^2-y^2}$ and d$_{xy}$ superconductivity. We benchmark this method on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and, unsurprisingly, confirm that this is a d$_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductor. We then apply our method to $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br, which we discover is a d$_{xy}$ superconductor.
The heavy quasiparticle bands in Kondo materials which originate in the hybridization of f- and conduction electrons exhibit numerous, sometimes coexisting, broken symmetry phases. Most notable are unconventional superconductivity, itinerant small moment antiferromagnetism and hidden order of higher order multipoles of f-electrons which all lead to a gapping of the heavy bands. In rare cases the chemical potential lies within the hybridization gap and the ground state is a Kondo semiconductor without ordering. The dynamical magnetic response of such gapped f-electron systems has been investiga…
The theory of quasiparticle interference (QPI) for non-centrosymmetric (NCS) superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is developed using T-matrix theory in Born approximation. We show that qualitatively new effects in the QPI pattern originate from the Rashba spin-orbit coupling: The resulting spin coherence factors lead to a distinct difference of charge- and spin- QPI and to an induced spin anisotropy in the latter even for isotropic magnetic impurity scattering. In particular a cross - QPI appears describing the spin oscillation pattern due to nonmagnetic impurity scattering which is…
The tetragonal compound Sr2RuO4 exhibits a chiral p-wave superconducting (SC) state of its three t2g-type conduction bands. The characteristics of unconventional gap structure are known from experiment, in particular field-angle resolved specific heat measurements and from microscopic theories. A rotated extremal structure on the main active SC band with respect to the nodal gaps on the passive bands was concluded. We propose that this gap structure can be further specified by applying the STM- quasiparticle interference (QPI) method. We calculate the QPI spectrum within a three band and chira…
We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of Na0.7CoO2, the host cobaltate of the NaxCoO2.yH2O series. Our results show a large hexagonal-like hole-type Fermi surface, an extremely narrow strongly renormalized quasiparticle band and a small Fermi velocity. Along the Gamma to M high symmetry line, the quasiparticle band crosses the Fermi level from M toward Gamma consistent with a negative sign of effective single-particle hopping (t ): t is estimated to be about 8 meV which is on the order of exchange coupling J in this system. This suggests that t ~ J ~ 10 meV is an important energy sc…
Despite decades of progress, an understanding of unconventional superconductivity still remains elusive. An important open question is about the material dependence of the superconducting properties. Using the quasiparticle self-consistent GW method, we re-examine the electronic structure of copper oxide high-Tc materials. We show that QSGW captures several important features, distinctive from the conventional LDA results. The energy level splitting between dx2-y2 and d3z2-r2 is significantly enlarged and the van Hove singularity point is lowered. The calculated results compare better than LDA…
The nature of unconventional superconductivity is intimately linked to the microscopic nature of the pairing interactions. In this work, motivated by cubic heavy fermion compounds with embedded multipolar moments, we theoretically investigate superconducting instabilities instigated by multipolar Kondo interactions. Employing multipolar fluctuations (mediated by RKKY interaction) coupled to conduction electrons via two-channel Kondo and novel multipolar Kondo interactions, we uncover a variety of superconducting states characterized by higher-angular momentum Cooper pairs, $J=0,1,2,3$. We demo…
Although the pairing glue for the attractive quasiparticle interaction responsible for unconventional superconductivity in heavy electron materials has been identified as the spin fluctuations that arise from their proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point, there has been no model to describe their superconducting transition at Tc that is comparable to that found by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer (BCS) for conventional superconductors where phonons provide the pairing glue. Here we propose a phenomenological BCS-like expression for Tc in heavy electron materials, that is based on the unu…
$\rm CePt_3Si$ is a novel ternary compound exhibiting antiferromagnetic order at $T_N \approx 2.2$ K and superconductivity (SC) at $T_c \approx 0.75$ K. Large values of $H_{c2}' \approx -8.5$ T/K and $H_{c2}(0) \approx 5$ T indicate Cooper pairs formed out of heavy quasiparticles. The mass enhancement originates from Kondo interaction with a characteristic temperature $T_K \approx 8$ K. NMR and $μ$SR measurements evidence coexistence of SC and long range magnetic order on a microscopic scale. Moreover, $\rm CePt_3Si$ is the first heavy fermion SC without an inversion symmetry. This gives rise …
The single-layered ruthenate Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is one of the most enigmatic unconventional superconductors. While for many years it was thought to be the best candidate for a chiral $p$-wave superconducting ground state, desirable for topological quantum computations, recent experiments suggest a singlet state, ruling out the original $p$-wave scenario. The superconductivity as well as the properties of the multi-layered compounds of the ruthenate perovskites are strongly influenced by a van Hove singularity in proximity of the Fermi energy. Tiny structural distortions move the van Hove singularit…
Electrons in quantum materials exhibiting coexistence of dispersionless (flat) bands piercing dispersive (steep) bands can give rise to strongly correlated phenomena, and are associated with unconventional superconductivity. It is known that in twisted trilayer graphene steep Dirac cones can coexist with band flattening, but the phenomenon is not stable under layer misalignments. Here we show that such a twisted sandwiched graphene (TSWG) -- a three-layer van der Waals heterostructure with a twisted middle layer -- can have very stable flat bands coexisting with Dirac cones near the Fermi ener…
Recently, kagome lattice metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) family has received wide attention due to its presence of superconductivity, charge density wave (CDW) and peculiar properties from topological nontrivial electronic structure. With time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, we show that the excited quasiparticle relaxation dynamics can be explained by formation of energy gap below the phase transition being similar to a usual second-order CDW condensate, by contrast, the structure change is predominantly first order phase transition. Furthermore, no CDW amplitude mode is identified in th…
We investigate unconventional superconductivity in three-dimensional electronic systems with the chemical potential close to a quadratic band touching point in the band dispersion. Short-range interactions can lead to d-wave superconductivity, described by a complex tensor order parameter. We elucidate the general structure of the corresponding Ginzburg--Landau free energy and apply these concepts to the case of an isotropic band touching point. For vanishing chemical potential, the ground state of the system is given by the superconductor analogue of the uniaxial nematic state, which features…
