We investigate unconventional superconductivity in three-dimensional electronic systems with the chemical potential close to a quadratic band touching point in the band dispersion. Short-range interactions can lead to d-wave superconductivity, described by a complex tensor order parameter. We elucidate the general structure of the corresponding Ginzburg--Landau free energy and apply these concepts to the case of an isotropic band touching point. For vanishing chemical potential, the ground state of the system is given by the superconductor analogue of the uniaxial nematic state, which features line nodes in the excitation spectrum of quasiparticles. In contrast to the theory of real tensor order in liquid crystals, however, the ground state is selected here by the sextic terms in the free energy. At finite chemical potential, the nematic state has an additional instability at weak coupling and low temperatures. In particular, the one-loop coefficients in the free energy indicate that at weak coupling genuinely complex orders, which break time-reversal symmetry, are energetically favored. We relate our analysis to recent measurements in the half-Heusler compound YPtBi and discuss the role of the cubic crystal symmetry.
We illuminate the intriguing role played by spatial anisotropy in three-dimensional Luttinger semimetals featuring quadratic band touching and long-range Coulomb interactions. We observe the anisotropy to be subject to an exceptionally slow renormalization group (RG) evolution so that it can be considered approximately constant when computing the impact of quantum fluctuations on the remaining couplings of the system. Using perturbative RG we then study the competition of all local short-range interactions that are generated from the long-range interactions for fixed anisotropy. Two main effec…
It is shown that zero point quantum fluctuations (ZPQFs) completely lift the accidental continuous degeneracy that is found in mean field analysis of quantum spin nematic phases of hyperfine spin 2 cold atoms. The result is two distinct ground states which have higher symmetries: a uniaxial spin nematic and a biaxial spin nematic with dihedral symmetry ${Dih}_4$. There is a novel first order quantum phase transition between the two phases as atomic scattering lengths are varied. We find that the ground state of $^{87}Rb$ atoms should be a uniaxial spin nematic. We note that the energy barrier …
Obtaining the electronic structure of the newly discovered iron-based superconductors is the key to understanding the mechanism of their high-temperature superconductivity. We used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to make direct measurements of the electronic structure and Fermi surface (FS) of the untwinned uniaxial state of CaFe2As2, the parent compound of iron-based superconductors. We observed unequal dispersions and FS geometries along the orthogonal Fe-Fe bond directions. More importantly, unidirectional straight and flat FS segments are observed near the zone center, wh…
Nematic states are characterized by rotational symmetry breaking without translational ordering. Recently, nematic superconductivity, in which the superconducting gap spontaneously lifts the rotational symmetry of the lattice, has been discovered. However the pairing mechanism and the mechanism determining the nematic orientation remain unresolved. A first step is to demonstrate control of the nematicity, through application of an external symmetry-breaking field, to determine the sign and strength of coupling to the lattice. Here, we report for the first time control of the nematic orientatio…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the temperature and energy dependence of the spin excitation anisotropy in uniaxial-strained electron-doped iron pnictide BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ near optimal superconductivity ($T_c=20$ K). Our work has been motivated by the observation of in-plane resistivity anisotropy in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase of electron-underdoped iron pnictides under uniaxial pressure, which has been attributed to a spin-driven Ising-nematic state or orbital ordering. Here we show that the spin excitation anisotropy, a signature of the spin-driven Ising-nemati…
Raman scattering can detect spontaneous point-group symmetry breaking without resorting to single-domain samples. Here we use this technique to study $\mathrm{BaFe_2As_2}$, the parent compound of the "122" Fe-based superconductors. We show that an applied compression along the Fe-Fe direction, which is commonly used to produce untwinned orthorhombic samples, changes the structural phase transition at temperature $T_{\mathrm{s}}$ into a crossover that spans a considerable temperature range above $T_{\mathrm{s}}$. Even in crystals that are not subject to any applied force, a distribution of subs…
The $S=1/2$ quantum spin ladder system with the anisotropic ferromagnetic exchange interaction on the rung under magnetic field is investigated using the numerical diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) analyses. It is found that the nematic-spin-correlation-dominant Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) appears in some high magnetic field. It is included in the TLL phase where the two-magnon bound state is realized. For some suitable parameters, after the field-induced phase transition from this two-magnon-bound TLL phase to the single-magnon TLL one, the re-entrant tra…
The superconductivity discovered in iron-pnictides is intimately related to a nematic ground state, where the C4 rotational symmetry is broken via the structural and magnetic transitions. We here study the nematicity in NaFeAs with the polarization dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A uniaxial strain was applied on the sample to overcome the twinning effect in the low temperature C2-symmetric state, and obtain a much simpler electronic structure than that of a twinned sample. We found the electronic structure undergoes an orbital-dependent reconstruction in the nematic state,…
We investigate the Zeeman-field-driven quantum phase transitions between singlet spin liquids and algebraically ordered O(2) nematic spin liquids of spin-one bosons in one-dimensional optical lattices. We find that the critical behavior is characterized by condensation of hardcore bosons instead of ideal magnons in high dimensional lattices. Critical exponents are strongly renormalized by hardcore interactions and critical states are equivalent to the free Fermion model up to the Friedal oscillations. We also find that the algebraically ordered nematic spin liquids close to critical points are…
Iron-based superconductors are well-known for their intriguing phase diagrams, which manifest a complex interplay of electronic, magnetic and structural degrees of freedom. Among the phase transitions observed are superconducting, magnetic, and several types of structural transitions, including a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic and a collapsed-tetragonal transition. In particular, the widely-observed tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition is believed to be a result of an electronic order that is coupled to the crystalline lattice and is, thus, referred to as nematic transition. Nematicity is therefo…
The iron-based high temperature superconductors exhibit a rich phase diagram reflecting a complex interplay between spin, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom [1-4]. The nematic state observed in many of these compounds epitomizes this complexity, by entangling a real-space anisotropy in the spin fluctuation spectrum with ferro-orbital order and an orthorhombic lattice distortion [5-7]. A more subtle and much less explored facet of the interplay between these degrees of freedom arises from the sizable spin-orbit coupling present in these systems, which translates anisotropies in real space …
We report a Raman scattering study of nematic degrees of freedom in the iron-based superconductor parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under tunable uniaxial strain. We demonstrate that the polarization resolved arsenic (As) phonon intensity can be used to monitor the nematic order parameter as a function of both temperature and strain. At low temperature in the nematic ordered phase we use it to track the continuous and reversible orientation of nematic domains under variable strain. At higher temperature, the evolution of the As phonon intensity under strain reflects an enhanced nematic susceptibi…
In many unconventional superconductors, nematic quantum fluctuations are strongest where the critical temperature is highest, inviting the conjecture that nematicity plays an important role in the pairing mechanism. Recently, Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Ni$_2$As$_2$ has been identified as a tunable nematic system that provides an ideal testing ground for this proposition. We therefore propose several sharp empirical tests, supported by quantitative calculations in a simple model of Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Ni$_2$As$_2$. The most stringent predictions concern experiments under uniaxial strain, which has recently em…
Due to the presence of a nontrivial three-dimensional spin-orbital entanglement, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ may be a time-reversal invariant nematic $p$-wave superconductor with coexisting in-plane and out-of-plane pairings. Here we discuss various signatures of such a state if the out-of-plane pairing component is dominant. First, the enhancement of the superconducting $T_c$ under in-plane uniaxial strains is nearly a quadratic function of the strain, because the out-of-plane pairing lacks a linear-order coupling to the strain. Second, when the strain applies along a certain in-plane direction, the nemati…
Unidirectional spin and charge density wave order in the cuprates is known to compete with superconductivity. In the stripe order (La,M)$_2$CuO$_4$ family of cuprates, spin and charge order occur as unidirectional order that can be stabilized by symmetry breaking structural distortions, such as the low temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase. Here we examine the interplay between structure and the formation of charge density wave (CDW) order in the LTT phase of La$_{1.475}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ by applying uniaxial stress to distort the structure and influence the formation of CDW order. Us…
We consider domain walls in nematic quantum Hall ferromagnets predicted to form in multivalley semiconductors, recently probed by scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments on Bi(111) surfaces. We show that the domain wall properties depend sensitively on the filling factor $ν$ of the underlying (integer) quantum Hall states. For $ν=1$ and in the absence of impurity scattering we argue that the wall hosts a single-channel Luttinger liquid whose gaplessness is a consequence of valley and charge conservation. For $ν=2$, it supports a two-channel Luttinger liquid, which for sufficiently strong in…
Spin nematic phase is a phase of frustrated quantum magnets with a quadrupolar order of electron spins. Since the spin nematic order is usually masked in experimentally accessible quantities, it is important to develop a methodology for detecting the spin nematic order experimentally. In this paper we propose a convenient method for detecting quasi-long-range spin nematic correlations of a quadrupolar Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state of $S=1/2$ frustrated ferromagnetic spin chain compounds, using electron spin resonance (ESR). We focus on linewidth of a so-called paramagnetic resonance peak in …
Strain is a powerful experimental tool to explore new electronic states and understand unconventional superconductivity. Here, we investigate the effect of uniaxial strain on the nematic and superconducting phase of single crystal FeSe using magnetotransport measurements. We find that the resistivity response to the strain is strongly temperature dependent and it correlates with the sign change in the Hall coefficient being driven by scattering, coupling with the lattice and multiband phenomena. Band structure calculations suggest that under strain the electron pockets develop a large in-plane…
We compute the effects of electronic interactions on gapless spin-3/2 excitations that in a noninteracting system emerge at a bi-quadratic touching of Kramers degenerate valence and conduction bands, known as Luttinger semimetal. This model can describe the low-energy physics of HgTe, gray-Sn, 227 pyrochlore iridates and half-Heuslers. For the sake of concreteness we only consider the short-range components of the Coulomb interaction. By combining mean-field analysis with a renormalization group (RG) calculation, we construct multiple cuts of the global phase diagram of interacting spin-3/2 fe…
The momentum dependence of the nematic order parameter is an important ingredient in the microscopic description of iron-based high-temperature superconductors. While recent reports on FeSe indicate that the nematic order parameter changes sign between electron and hole bands, detailed knowledge is still missing for other compounds. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with uniaxial strain tuning, we measure the nematic band splitting in both FeSe and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ without interference from either twinning or magnetic order. We find that the nematic order parameter exhi…
Neutron diffraction measurements are presented measuring the responses of both magnetic and structural order parameters of parent and lightly Co-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 under the application of uniaxial pressure. We find that the uniaxial pressure induces a thermal shift in the onset of antiferromagnetic order that grows as a percentage of T_N as Co-doping is increased and the superconducting phase is approached. Additionally, as uniaxial pressure is increased within parent and lightly-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 on the first order side of the tricritical point, we observe a decoupling betwe…
The phase diagram of the XXZ spin-1 quantum magnet on the kagome lattice is studied for all cases where the $J_z$ coupling is antiferromagnetic. In the zero magnetic field case, the six previously introduced phases, found using various methods, are: the nondegenerate gapped photon phase which breaks no space symmetry or spin symmetry; the six-fold degenerate phase with plaquette order, which breaks both time reversal symmetry and translational symmetry; the "superfluid" (ferromagnetic) phase with an in-plane global U(1) symmetry broken, when $J_{xy} < 0$; the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ order whe…
Recently, the notion of topological phases of matter has been extended to higher-order incarnations, supporting gapless modes on even lower dimensional boundaries, such as corners and hinges. We here identify a collection of cubic spin-3/2 fermions with biquadratic touching of Kramers degenerate valence and conduction bands as a platform to strain-engineer higher-order topological (HOT) phases: external uniaxial strain gives birth to a HOT Dirac semimetal or an insulator, depending on its sign, featuring topological \emph{hinge} modes in the strain direction. The insulator in fact exhibits \em…
