A brief account of the zero temperature magnetic response of a system of strongly correlated electrons in strong magnetic field is given in terms of its quasiparticle properties. The scenario is based on the paramagnetic phase of the half-filled Hubbard model, and the calculations are carried out with the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) together with the numerical renormalization group (NRG). As well known, in a certain parameter regime one finds a magnetic susceptibility which increases with the field strength. Here, we analyze this metamagnetic response based on Fermi liquid parameters, which can be calculated within the DMFT-NRG procedure. The results indicate that the metamagnetic response can be driven by field-induced effective mass enhancement. However, also the contribution due to quasiparticle interactions can play a significant role. We put our results in context with experimental studies of itinerant metamagnetic materials.
Triple-layered ruthenate Sr$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ shows a first-order itinerant metamagnetic transition for in-plane magnetic fields. Our experiments revealed rather surprising behavior in the low-temperature transport properties near this transition. The in-plane magnetoresistivity $ρ$$_{ab}$(H) exhibits ultrasharp steps as the magnetic field sweeps down through the transition. Temperature sweeps of $ρ$$_{ab}$ for fields within the transition regime show non-metallic behavior in the up-sweep cycle of magnetic field, but show a significant drop in the down-sweep cycle. These observations indicate …
We report magnetic properties of the layered itinerant system, Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$ in the magnetic field up to 70 T. As for the exchange-enhanced Pauli paramagnetic metal SrCo$_2$P$_2$, the magnetization curve shows two characteristic anomalies. The low-field anomaly is small without obvious hysteresis, and the high-field one is a typical behavior of the itinerant-electron metamagnetic transition (IEMT). Such a successive transition in the magnetization curve cannot be explained by the conventional phenomenological theory for IEMT due to the Landau expansion of the free energy, but by …
We have investigated the spin dynamics in the bilayered perovskite Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of magnetic field and temperature using 17O-NMR. This system sits close to a metamagnetic quantum critical point (MMQCP) for the field perpendicular to the ruthenium oxide planes. We confirm Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures except for a narrow field region close to the MMQCP. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature 1/T1T is enhanced on approaching the metamagnetic critical field of 7.9 T and at the critical field 1/T1T continues to increase and does not show Fermi- liquid …
We show that the metamagnetic transition in Sr$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ bifurcates into two transitions as the field is rotated away from the conducting planes. This two-step process comprises partial or total alignment of moments in ferromagnetic bands followed by an itinerant metamagnetic transition whose critical field increases with rotation. Evidence for itinerant metamagnetism is provided by the Shubnikov-de Hass effect which shows a non-trivial evolution of the geometry of the Fermi surface and an enhancement of the quasiparticles effective-mass across the transition. The metamagnetic response…
Theoretical studies of the metamagnetism and anomalous phase of Sr3Ru2O7 have focused on the role of van Hove singularities, although much experimental evidence points towards quantum criticality having a large effect. We investigate the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of systems where magnetic field tunes through such a peak in the electronic density of states. We study the generic case of a van Hove singularity in 2D. We see that in combination with the requirement of number conservation and interaction effects the peak in the density of states produces several interesting phenomena in…
The mechanism underlying the enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient of quasiparticles at the first-order metamagnetic transition in UTe_2, reported by Miyake et al. in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 88, 063706 (2019), is discussed theoretically by taking into account the ferromagnetic order-parameter fluctuations on the basis of the Landau theory of phase transition. We find that the enhanced ferromagnetic spin fluctuation gives rise to the enhancement of the effective mass of the quasiparticles or the Sommerfeld coefficient γ,which is consistent with the experimental observations. At the same time, th…
It is shown that metamagnetic transition in metals can occur via the formation of electronic nematic order. We consider a simple model where the spin-dependent Fermi surface instability gives rise to the formation of an electronic nematic phase upon increasing the applied Zeeman magnetic field. This leads to two consecutive metamagnetic transitions that separate the nematic phase from the low-field and high-field 'isotropic' metallic phases. Possible connection to the physics of the bilayer Ruthenate, Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, is also discussed.
Critical thermodynamics close to a metamagnetic quantum critical endpoint (QCEP) in a metal is discussed within the framework of spin-fluctuation theory. We analyze the effective potential for the Ising order parameter that is renormalized by spin-fluctuations and acquires a characteristic temperature dependence. The resulting magnetic field, H, and temperature, T, dependence of the magnetization, specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, susceptibility and the Grüneisen parameter are determined, and the crossover lines in the (H,T) phase diagram are specified. We point out that the …
This article describes the Fermi surface properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and its alloy systems CeRu$_2$(Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$)$_2$ and Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Ru$_2$Si$_2$ studied by the de Haas - van Alphen (dHvA) effect. We pay particular attention to how the Fermi surface properties and the f electron state change with magnetic properties, in particular how they change associated with metamagnetic transition and quantum phase transition. After summarizing the important physical properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$, we present the magnetic phase diagrams of CeRu$_2$(Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$)$_2$ and Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Ru$_2$S…
The strongly exchange enhanced Pauli paramagnet LaCo$_9$Si$_4$ is found to exhibit an itinerant metamagnetic phase transition with indications for metamagnetic quantum criticality. Our investigation comprises magnetic, specific heat, and NMR measurements as well as ab-initio electronic structure calculations. The critical field is about 3.5 T for $H||c$ and 6 T for $H\bot c$, which is the lowest value ever found for rare earth intermetallic compounds. In the ferromagnetic state there appears a moment of about 0.2 $μ_B$/Co at the $16k$ Co-sites, but sigificantly smaller moments at the 4d and $1…
Based on the periodic Anderson model, it is shown that the competition between the quenching of magnetic moments by local quantum spin fluctuations and a magnetic exchange interaction caused by the virtual exchange of pair excitations of quasiparticles in spin channels is responsible for the metamagnetic crossover in CeRu_2Si_2, cooperated with the electron-lattice interaction. The strength of the exchange interaction is proportional to the bandwidth of quasiparticles and its sign changes with increasing magnetizations; it is antiferromagnetic in the absence of magnetizations, whereas it is fe…
We provide a microscopic description of the magnetic properties of UGe$_2$ and in particular, of its both classical and quantum critical behavior. Namely, we account for all the critical points: the critical ending point (CEP) at the metamagnetic phase transition, the tricritical point, and the quantum critical end point at the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition. Their position agrees quantitatively with experiment. Additionally, we predict that the metamagnetic CEP can be traced down to zero temperature and becomes quantum critical point by a small decrease of both the total elect…
We report low-temperature thermal expansion measurements on the bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ as a function of magnetic field applied perpendicular to the Ruthenium-oxide planes. The field-dependence of the c-axis expansion coefficient indicates the accumulation of entropy close to 8 Tesla, related to an underlying quantum critical point. The latter is masked by two first-order metamagnetic transitions which bound a regime of enhanced entropy. Outside this region the singular thermal expansion behavior is compatible with the predictions of the itinerant theory for a two-dimensional metam…
We examine the effects of long-range dipolar forces on metamagnetic transitions and generalize the theory of Condon domains to the case of an itinerant electron system undergoing a first-order metamagnetic transition. We demonstrate that within a finite range of the applied field, dipolar interactions induce a spatial modulation of the magnetization in the form of stripes or bubbles. Our findings are consistent with recent observations in the bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$.
We report a uniaxial-pressure study on the magnetisation of single crystals of the bilayer perovskite Sr3Ru2O7, a metamagnet close to a ferromagnetic instability. We observed that the application of a uniaxial pressure parallel to the c-axis induces ferromagnetic ordering with a Curie temperature of about 80 K and critical pressures of about 4 kbar or higher. This value for the critical pressure is even higher than the value previously reported (~ 1 kbar), which might be attributed to the difference of the impurity level. Below the critical pressure parallel to the c-axis, the metamagnetic fie…
We define the metamagnetic phase transition of itinerant electrons controlled by the spin injection mechanism. The current flow between a ferromagnetic metal and a metamagnetic metal produces the non-equilibrium shift of chemical potential for spin up and spin down electrons that acts as an effective magnetic field driving the metamagnetic transition.
It is known that itinerant metamagnetic transitions can be driven by features in the electronic density of states. We study the signatures of these transitions in the entropy and specific heat for a variety of different cases, identifying the key features which differ from naive expectations, such as enhanced critical fields and non-Fermi liquid temperature dependencies. We begin with the generic case of a logarithmically divergent density of states, as caused by a two dimensional van Hove singularity. We then study a specific model for the bandstructure of Sr3Ru2O7, a material with a well-stu…
Quasiparticle interference (QPI) in spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy provides a powerful method to detect orbital band structures and orbital ordering patterns in transition metal oxides. We use the $T$-matrix formalism to calculate the QPI spectra for the unconventional metamagnetic system of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ with a $t_{2g}$-orbital band structure. A detailed tight-binding model is constructed accounting for features such as spin-orbit coupling, bilayer splitting, and the staggered rotation of the RuO octahedra. The band parameters are chosen by fitting the calculated Ferm…
We report a study of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect on the itinerant metamagnet Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. Extremely high sample purity allows the observation of dHvA oscillations both above and below the metamagnetic transition field of 7.9 T. The quasiparticle masses are fairly large away from the transition, and are enhanced by up to an extra factor of three as the transition is approached, but the Fermi surface topography change is quite small. The results are qualitatively consistent with a field-induced Stoner transition in which the mass enhancement is the result of critical fluctuations.
Tuning of electronic density-of-states singularities is a common route to unconventional metal physics. Conceptually, van Hove singularities are realized only in clean two-dimensional systems. Little attention has therefore been given to the disordered (dirty) limit. Here, we provide a magnetotransport study of the dirty metamagnetic system calcium-doped strontium ruthenate. Fermi liquid properties persist across the metamagnetic transition, but with an unusually strong variation of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. This is revealed by a strong decoupling of inelastic electron scattering and electroni…
Bilayer strontium ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ displays pronounced non-Fermi liquid behavior at magnetic fields around 8 T, applied perpendicular to the ruthenate planes, which previously has been associated with an itinerant metamagnetic quantum critical end point (QCEP). We focus on the magnetic Grüneisen parameter $Γ_{\rm H}$, which is the most direct probe to characterize field-induced quantum criticality. We confirm quantum critical scaling due to a putative two-dimensional QCEP near 7.845(5) T, which is masked by two ordered phases A and B, identified previously by neutron scattering. In …
We calculate the magnetic and quasiparticle excitation spectra of an itinerant $J_1-J_2$ model for iron pnictides. In addition to an acoustic spin-wave branch, the magnetic spectrum has a second, optical branch, resulting from the coupled four-sublattice magnetic structure. The spin-wave velocity has also a planar directional anisotropy, due to the collinear/striped antiferromagnetism. Within the magnetically ordered phase, the quasiparticle spectrum is composed of two Dirac cones, resulting from the folding of the magnetic Brillouin zone. We discuss the relevance of our findings to the unders…
Ultrafast time-resolved photoinduced reflectivity is measured for the itinerant antiferromagnet UNiGa$_{5}$ ($T_{N} \approx$85 K) from room temperature to 10 K. The relaxation time $τ$ shows a sharp increase at $T_{N}$ consistent with the opening of a spin gap. In addition, the temperature dependence of $τ$ below $T_{N}$ is consistent with the opening of a spin gap leading to a quasiparticle recombination bottleneck as revealed by the Rothwarf-Taylor model. This contrasts with canonical heavy fermions such as CeCoIn$_{5}$ where the recombination bottleneck arises from the hybridization gap.
We report field and temperature dependent measurements of the thermoelectric power (TEP) and the Nernst effect in the itinerant metamagnet UCoAl. The magnetic field is applied along the easy magnetization c-axis in the hexagonal crystal structure. The metamagnetic transition from the paramagnetic phase at zero field to the field induced ferromagnetic (FM) state is of first order at low temperatures and becomes a broad crossover above the critical temperature $T^{\star}_{M} \sim 11$ K. The field-dependence of the TEP reveals that the effective mass of the hole carriers changes significantly at …
We report an electrical transport study in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_4$ single crystals at high magnetic fields ($B$). For $x =0.2$, the Hall constant $R_{xy}$ decreases sharply at an anisotropic metamagnetic (MM) transition reaching its value for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ at high fields. A sharp decrease in the $A$ coefficient of the resistivity $T^2$-term and a change in the structure of the angular magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) for $B$ rotating in the planes, confirms the reconstruction of the Fermi surface (FS). Our observations and LDA calculations indicate a strong dependence of the FS on the C…
Sr4Ru3O10 is characterized by a sharp metamagnetic transition and ferromagnetic behavior occurring within the basal plane and along the c-axis, respectively. Resistivity at magnetic field, B, exhibits low-frequency quantum oscillations when B||c-axis and large magnetoresistivity accompanied by critical fluctuations driven by the metamagnetism when B^c-axis. The complex behavior evidenced in resistivity, magnetization and specific heat presented is not characteristic of any obvious ground states, and points to an exotic state that shows a delicate balance between fluctuations and order.
In two previous papers we studied the problem of electronic properties in a system with long-ranged helimagnetic order caused by itinerant electrons. A standard many-fermion formalism was used. The calculations were quite tedious because different spin projections were coupled in the action, and because of the inhomogeneous nature of a system with long-ranged helimagnetic order. Here we introduce a canonical transformation that diagonalizes the action in spin space, and maps the problem onto a homogeneous fermion problem. This transformation to quasiparticle degrees of freedom greatly simplifi…
New mechanism of magnetoresistivity in itinerant metamagnets with a structural disorder is introduced basing on analysis of experimental results on magnetoresistivity, susceptibility, and magnetization of structurally disordered alloys (Y$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$)Co$_{2}$. In this series, YCo$_{2}$ is an enhanced Pauli paramagnet, whereas GdCo$_{2}$ is a ferrimagnet (T$_{\rm c}$=400 K) with Gd sublattice coupled antiferromagnetically to the itinerant Co-3d electrons. The alloys are paramagnetic for $x < 0.12$. Large positive magnetoresistivity has been observed in the alloys with magnetic ground state …
We report a detailed investigation into the metamagnetism of Sr3Ru2O7 at low temperatures for the magnetic field parallel to the ruthenium oxygen planes. The metamagnetism is studied as a function of temperature, magnetic field and sample quality using magnetisation, magnetotransport and specific heat as probes. From hysteretic behaviour in the magnetisation, we confirm earlier work and observe a finite temperature critical point at (5 T, >0.25 K). In our highest quality samples two-step metamagnetic transitions are additionally observed at 5.8 T and at 6.3 T, which coincide with a range of br…
Magnetization measurements of URu2Si2 in pulsed magnetic fields of 44 T reveal that the hidden order phase is destroyed before appearing in the form of a re-entrant phase between ~ 36 and 39 T. Evidence for conventional itinerant electron metamagnetism at higher temperatures suggests that the re-entrant phase is created in the vicinity of a quantum critical end point.
Focus is given on the macroscopic and microscopic experimental works realized during a decade on the clear case of itinerant metamagnetism in the heavy fermion paramagnetic compound CeRu2Si2 . Emphasis is made on the feedback between the band structure, the exchange coupling and the lattice instability. Sweeps in magnetic field, pressure and temperature feel the pseudogap of this strongly correlated electronic system as well as its equivalent CeRu2Ge2 at a fictitious negative pressure. Some mysteries persist as the complete observation of the FS above the metamagnetic field HM and the detectio…
We report the results of a study of the di erential magnetic susceptibility of Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature and magnetic elds applied at a series of angles to the ab plane. By analysing the real and imaginary parts of the susceptibility, we conclude that the eld angle acts as a continuous tuning parameter for the critical end-point to a line of rst order metamagnetic phase transitions. The end-point sits at approximately 1.25K for elds applied in the ab plane, and is depressed to below 50 mK when the eld is aligned within 10 of the c axis.
We investigate the periodic Anderson model in the presence of an external magnetic field, using dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the modified perturbation theory. A metamagnetic transition is observed which exhibits a massive change in the electronic properties. These are discussed in terms of the quasiparticle weight and densities of states. The results are compared with the experimental results of the metamagnetic transition in CeRu_2Si_2.
We analyze a system composed of itinerant electrons and localized spins with on-site interactions representing the Hund's first rule. Properties of the system are studied rigorously on the infinite square lattice but the configurational space is restricted to the lowest-period phases only. Using exact expressions for the ground state energy an evolution of the phase diagram with an external magnetic field is determined. For a wide range of electron densities metamagnetic phase transitions are detected. It is shown that jumps of magnetization of the electrons at the metamagnetic transitions are…
We performed nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements on itinerant-electron metamagnet UCoAl in order to investigate the critical behavior of the magnetism near a metamagnetic (MM) critical endpoint (CEP). We derived c-axis magnetization $M_c$ and its fluctuation $S_c$ from the measurements of Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ as a function of the c-axis external field ($H_c$) and temperature ($T$). We developed contour plots of $M_c$ and $S_c$ on the $H_c$ - $T$ phase diagram, and observed the strong divergence of $S_c$ at the CEP. The critical exponents of $M…
A thermodynamic and transport study of Sr4Ru3O10 as a function of temperature and magnetic field is presented. The central results include a growing specific heat C with increasing field B, a magnetic contribution to C/T at low temperatures proportional to -log(T), an abrupt jump and a peak in C/T at 2.90 T and 7 T for B||ab-plane and B||c-axis, respectively, and corresponding changes in the low T power laws of the resistivity. The novelty of this work lies in the fact that this system is strongly anisotropic displaying spontaneous ferromagnetism along the c-axis and an intralayer metamagnetic…
We report high field de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ both below and above the first-order 26 T metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic to a polarized paramagnetic state. The dHvA frequencies observed above the transition are much higher than those observed below, implying a drastic change of the Fermi-surface size. The dHvA frequencies above the transition and their angular dependence are in good agreement with band-structure calculations for LaRh$_2$Si$_2$, which correspond to CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ with localized $f$ electrons. Given that the $f$ electrons a…
We report on the observation of large, step-like anomalies in the magnetization ($ΔM = 0.74$\,$μ_{\rm B}$/Ce), in the magnetostriction ($Δl/l_{0} = 2.0 \cdot 10^{-3}$), and in the magnetoresistance in polycrystals of the paramagnetic heavy-fermion system CeTiGe at a critical magnetic field $μ_0 H_c \approx $ 12.5\,T at low temperatures. The size of these anomalies is much larger than those reported for the prototypical heavy-fermion metamagnet CeRu$_2$Si$_2$. Furthermore, hysteresis between increasing and decreasing field data indicate a real thermodynamic, first-order type of phase transition…
We describe a minimal model, based on a spin only Hamiltonian with a single energy scale for itinerant electron metamagnetism. Within this model the metamagnetic critical field is directly proportional to the temperature where a peak in the linear susceptibility occurs which in turn is related in a simple manner to the temperature where the nonlinear susceptibilities also peak. The spin dependent thermodynamic properties are derived in a straightforward manner and bear a striking resemblance to observations in such strongly correlated systems as heavy fermion materials. We also consider extens…
CeRhIn$_{5}$ is an itinerant magnet where the Ce$^{3+}$ spins order in a simple helical phase. We investigate the spin excitations and observe sharp spin-waves parameterized by a nearest neighbor exchange $J_{RKKY}$=0.88 $\pm$ 0.05 meV. At higher energies, the spin fluctuations are heavily damped where single quasiparticle excitations are replaced by a momentum and energy broadened continuum constrained by kinematics of energy and momentum conservation. The delicate energy balance between localized and itinerant characters results in the breakdown of the single quasiparticle picture in CeRhIn$…
Itinerant metamagnetism transition is observed and studied in perovskite La1-xCaxMn0.90Cu0.10O3 system for x = 0.30. At a constant low temperature, 10 K < T < 150 K, there is a continuous second-order metamagnetism jump from a low magnetic state to a high one with the magnetic field H increasing. However, at an exceeding low temperature, T = 2.5 K, the metamagnetism jump at H = 3.5 T becomes to be a robust first-order transition, and another metamagnetism transition occurs at a higher field H = 7.0 T. Since there is no charge ordering sign in the present system, it can not be understood by usi…
We report detailed investigation of quantum oscillations in Sr3Ru2O7, observed inductively (the de Haas-van Alphen effect) and thermally (the magnetocaloric effect). Working at fields from 3 T to 18 T allowed us to straddle the metamagnetic transition region and probe the low- and high-field Fermi liquids. The observed frequencies are strongly field-dependent in the vicinity of the metamagnetic transition, and there is evidence for magnetic breakdown. We also present the results of a comprehensive rotation study. The most surprising result concerns the field dependence of the measured quasipar…
To solve the puzzle of metamagnetic phenomena in heavy fermion systems, we have compared paramagnetic isostructural Ce and Yb systems, CeNi$_2$Ge$_2$ and YbNi$_2$Ge$_2$, both of which are located near a magnetic instability. The most intriguing result is discovery of a metamagnetic-like transition in both systems from magnetization measurements in a pulsed magnetic fields. This is the first observation of the metamagnetism for isomorphic Ce and Yb paramagnetic systems. Similar to other metamagnets, the metamagnetic transition fields for both compounds are well scaled by the temperature $T_χ^{\…
We investigate the evolution of the heavy fermion ground state under application of a strong external magnetic field. We present a richer version of the usual hybridization mean field theory that allows for hybridization in both the singlet and triplet channels and incorporates a self-consistent Weiss field. We show that for a magnetic field strength B*, a filling-dependent fraction of the zero-field hybridization gap, the spin up quasiparticle band becomes fully polarized--an event marked by a sudden jump in the magnetic susceptibility. The system exhibits a kind of quantum rigidity in which …
We report results of structural, magnetic and transport properties of single crystal CaRu1-xCrxO3 (0≤x≤0.36) and SrRu1-xCrxO3 (0≤x≤0.30). Cr substitution as low as x=0.08 drives CaRu1-xCrxO3 from the paramagnetic state to an itinerant ferromagnetic state with field-driven first-order metamagnetic transitions leading to a sizeable saturation moment (~0.4B/f.u.within the ab plane). The ferromagnetism occurs abruptly and reaches as high as TC=123 K for x=0.22. The Cr-driven ferromagnetism is highly anisotropic, suggesting an important role for spin-orbit coupling. …
The combination of the local-density approximation (LDA) with the rotationally invariant slave-boson theory (RISB) is used to investigate the realistic correlated electronic structure of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. From Wannier-downfolding the low-energy band structure to a three-band model for the Ru($t_{2g}$) states, the interacting problem is solved including intra- and inter-orbital Hubbard terms as well as spin-flip and pair-hopping interactions. Therewith it is possible to obtain valuable insight into the orbital occupations, relevant local spin multiplets and the fermiology with increasing corre…
Heavy fermions represent an archetypal example of strongly correlated electron systems which, due to entanglement among different interactions, often exhibit exotic and fascinating physics involving Kondo screening, magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. Here we report a comprehensive study on the transport and thermodynamic properties of a cerium-based heavy fermion compound CeBi$_2$ which undergoes an anti-ferromagnetic transition at $T_N$ $\sim$ 3.3 K. Its high temperature paramagnetic state is characterized by an enhanced heat capacity with Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ over 200 mJ/m…
Using ac susceptibility, we have determined the pressure dependence of the metamagnetic critical end point temperature T* for field applied in the ab-plane in the itinerant metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7. We find that T* falls monotonically to zero as pressure increases, producing a quantum critical end point (QCEP) at Pc~13.6 kbar. New features are observed near the QCEP -- the slope of T* vs pressure changes at ~12.8 kbar, and weak subsidiary maxima appear on either side of the main susceptibility peak at pressures near Pc -- indicating that some new physics comes into play near the QCEP. Clear signatu…
A combination of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations and a well-controlled approximative method is used to examine the ground-state phase diagrams of the spin-one-half Falicov-Kimball model extended by the spin-dependent on-site interaction ($J$) between localized spins and itinerant ($d$) electrons, as well as by external magnetic field ($h$). Both the magnetic ordering and metamagnetic transitions are analysed as functions of $h$ and the number of itinerant electrons ($N_d$) at selected $J$. Various magnetic superstructures including axial and diagonal spin stripes are observed …

The problem of quantum criticality in the context of itinerant ferro- or metamagnetism has received considerable attention [S. A. Grigera et. al., Science 294, 329 (2001); C. Pfleiderer et. al., Nature, 414, 427 (2001)]. It has been proposed that a new kind of quantum criticality is realised in materials such as MnSi or Sr_3Ru_2O_7. We show based on a mean-field theory that the low-temperature behaviour of the n-layer ruthenates Sr_{n+1}Ru_nO_{3n+1} can be understood as a result of a Van Hove singularity (VHS). We consider a single band whose Fermi energy, E_F, is close to the VHS and deduce a…
It is a long-standing important issue in heavy fermion physics whether $f$-electrons are itinerant or localized when the magnetic order occurs. Here we report the {\it in situ} scanning tunneling microscopy observation of the electronic structure in epitaxial thin films of CeRhIn$_5$, a prototypical heavy fermion compound with antiferromagnetic ground state. The conductance spectra above the Néel temperature $T_N$ clearly resolve the energy gap due to the hybridization between local 4$f$ electrons and conduction bands as well as the crystal electric field excitations. These structures persist …
A theory of Kondo lattices or a $1/d$ expansion theory, with $d$ spatial dimensionality, is applied to studying itinerant-electron ferromagnetism. Two relevant multi-band models are examined: a band-edge model where the chemical potential is at one of band-edges, the top or bottom of bands, and a flat-band model where one of bands is almost flat or dispersionless and the chemical potential is at the flat band. In both the models, a novel ferromagnetic exchange interaction arises from the virtual exchange of pair excitations of quasiparticles; it has two novel properties such as its strength is…
We consider a two dimensional itinerant antiferromagnet near a quantum critical point. We show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, fermionic excitations in the ordered state are not the usual Fermi liquid quasiparticles. Instead, down to very low frequencies, the fermionic self energy varies as $ω^{2/3}$. This non-Fermi liquid behavior originates in the coupling of fermions to the longitudinal spin susceptibility $χ_{\parallel}(q, Ω)$ in which the order-induced ``gap'' in the spectrum at $q=0$ dissolves into the Landau damping term at $v_F q >Ω$. The transverse spin fluctuations obey $z=1$ …
