We study the DC transport of finite graphene samples with random gap. Using Dirac fermions to describe the low-energy physics near the Dirac point, we employ a generalized Drude form for the conductivity. The latter is constant for a vanishing average gap but always decreases with increasing sample size for a nonzero average gap. The asymptotic conductivity of the infinite sample is either nonzero if the average gap is smaller than a critical value or zero otherwise. Our results are in agreement with recent numerical calculations of Bardarson et al..
The momentum transport in ultraclean bilayer graphene is characterized by the viscous transport. In quantizing magnetic field the momentum current passes through the guiding centers of cyclotron orbits. In this study we derive the quantized Hall viscosity of bilayer graphene that is the next topological feature after the quantum Hall effect. This can be detected in the non-local magnetoresistivity measurements that varies with the quantized steps of magnetoresistivity.
We present first principles study of thermoelectric transport properties of sandwiched heterostructure of Graphene (G)/hexagonal Boron Nitride (BN)/G, based on Boltzmann transport theory for band electrons using the bandstructure calculated from the Density Functional Theory (DFT) based plane-wave method. Calculations were carried out for three, four and five BN layers sandwiched between Graphene layers with three different arrangements to obtain the Seebeck coefficient and Power factor in $T\sim 25-400$K range. Moreover, using Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations with very large simulation cel…
The magnetic effects in ferromagnetic graphene basically depend on the principle of exchange interaction when ferromagntism is induced by depositing an insulator layer on graphene. Here we deal with the consequences of non-uniformity in the exchange coupling strength of the ferromagnetic graphene. We discuss how the in- homogeneity in the coordinate and momentum of the exchange vector field can provide interesting results in the conductivity analysis of the ferromagnetic graphene. Our analysis is based on the Kubo formalism of quantum transport.
Graphene bilayer systems are known to exhibit a band gap when the layer symmetry is broken, by applying a perpendicular electric field. The resulting band structure resembles that of a conventional semiconductor with a parabolic dispersion. Here, we introduce a novel bilayer graphene heterostructure, where single-layer graphene is placed on top of another layer of graphene with a regular lattice of antidots. We dub this class of graphene systems GOAL: graphene on graphene antidot lattice. By varying the structure geometry, band structure engineering can be performed to obtain linearly dispersi…
Boltzmann diffusive transport including relaxation time and mobility in graphene limited by ionized impurity scattering is investigated. The relaxation time is evaluated with two different methods, first one directly use Boltzmann transport equation via scattering matrix, second one is based on scattering cross-section. Two methods yield the same relaxation time results for graphene. Assume linear Thomas-Fermi screening and a reasonable electron carrier density, relaxation time and mobility can be calculated and plotted, which demonstrates graphene is a very promising high mobility material fo…
The magnetic and spin transport properties of a carbon chain between two armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) electrodes were studied using tight-binding Hamiltonian, mean-field Hubbard model and Landauer-Butikker formalism. The results showed that only odd-numbered carbon chains show intrinsic magnetic moments in chain-graphene junctions. It was also found that the electronic, magnetic and spin transport properties of carbon chain-graphene junctions strongly depend on the position and the length of the carbon chains between AGNR electrodes. Interestingly, we found a fully spin-polarized transm…
The electronic transport properties of single layer graphene having a dilute coating of indium adatoms has been investigated. Our studies establish that isolated indium atoms donate electrons to graphene and become a source of charged impurity scattering, affecting the conductivity as well as magnetotransport properties of the pristine graphene. Notably, a positive magnetoresistance is observed over a wide density range after In doping. The low field magnetoresistance carries signatures of quantum interference effects which are significantly altered by the adatoms.
We investigate charge transport in C$_{60}$-based single-molecule junctions with graphene electrodes employing a combination of density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations and Landauer transport theory. In particular, the dependence of the transport properties on the conformation of the molecular bridge and the type of termination of the graphene electrodes is investigated. Furthermore, electron pathways through the junctions are analyzed using the theory of local currents. The results reveal, in agreement with previous experiments, a pronounced dependence of the transpor…
Graphene samples can have a very high carrier mobility if influences from the substrate and the environment are minimized. Embedding a graphene sheet into a heterostructure with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) on both sides was shown to be a particularly efficient way of achieving a high bulk mobility. Nanopatterning graphene can add extra damage and drastically reduce sample mobility by edge disorder. Preparing etched graphene nanostructures on top of an hBN substrate instead of SiO2 is no remedy, as transport characteristics are still dominated by edge roughness. Here we show that etching full…
We report semiconducting behavior of monolayer graphene enabled through plasma activation of substrate surfaces. The graphene devices are fabricated by mechanical exfoliation onto pre-processed SiO2/Si substrates. Contrary to pristine graphene, these graphene samples exhibit a transport gap as well as nonlinear transfer characteristics, a large on/off ratio of 600 at cryogenic temperatures, and an insulating-like temperature dependence. Raman spectroscopic characterization shows evidence of sp3 hybridization of C atoms in the samples of graphene on activated SiO2/Si substrates. We analyze the …
Previously, graphene nanoribbons set in lateral heterostructures with hexagonal boron nitride were predicted to support topologically protected states at low energy. We investigate how robust the transport properties of these states are against lattice disorder. We find that forms of disorder that do not couple the two valleys of the zigzag graphene nanoribbon do not impact the transport properties at low bias, indicating that these lateral heterostructures are very promising candidates for chip-scale conducting interconnects. Forms of disorder that do couple the two valleys, such as vacancies…
Engineered substrates offer a promising avenue towards graphene devices having tunable properties. In particular, topographically patterned substrates can expose unique behavior due to their ability to induce local variations in strain and electrostatic doping. However, to explore the range of possible science and applications, it is important to create topographic substrates which both have tunable features and are suitable for transport measurements. In this Letter we describe the fabrication of tunable, topographically patterned substrates suitable for transport measurements. We report both…
Magnetotransport measurements on Hall bar devices fabricated on purely monolayer epitaxial graphene on Silicon Carbide (SiC/G) show a very tight spread in carrier concentration and mobility across wafer- size dimensions. In contrast, SiC/G devices containing bilayer graphene domains display variations in their electronic properties linked to the amount of bilayer content.
The electronic transport properties of monolayer graphene have been studied before and after the deposition of a dilute coating of tungsten adatoms on the surface. For coverages up to 2.5\% of a monolayer, we find tungsten adatoms simultaneously donate electrons to graphene and reduce the carrier mobility, impacting the zero- and finite-field transport properties. Two independent transport analyses suggest the adatoms lie nearly 1 nm above the surface. The presence of adatoms is also seen to impact the low field magnetoresistance, altering the signatures of weak localization.
The influence of plasma etched sample edges on electrical transport and doping is studied. Through electrical transport measurements the overall doping and mobility are analyzed for mono- and bilayer graphene samples. As a result the edge contributes strongly to the overall doping of the samples. Furthermore the edge disorder can be found as the main limiting source of the mobility for narrow samples.
We report the first measurements of spin injection in to graphene through a 20 nm thick tungsten disulphide (WS$_2$) layer, along with a modified spin relaxation time (τs) in graphene in the WS$_2$ environment, via spin-valve and Hanle spin-precession measurements, respectively. First, during the spin-injection into graphene through a WS$_2$-graphene interface, we can tune the interface resistance at different current bias and modify the spin injection efficiency, in a correlation with the conductivity-mismatch theory. Temperature assisted tunneling is identified as a dominant mechanism for th…
We explore the Floquet band-structure and electronic transport in laser-illuminated bilayer graphene. By using a bias voltage perpendicular to the graphene bilayer we show how to get one-way charge and valley transport among two unbiased leads. In contrast to quantum pumping, our proposal uses a different mechanism based on generating a non-reciprocal bandstructure with a built-in directionality. The Floquet states at one edge of a graphene layer become hybridized with the continuum on the other layer, and so the resulting bandstructure allows for one-way transport as in an \textit{isolator}. …
Heat dissipation is a very critical problem for designing nano-functional devices, including MoS2/Graphene heterojunctions. In this paper we investigate thermal transport in MoS2/Graphene hybrid nanosheets under various heating conditions, by using molecular dynamics simulation. Diverse transport processes and characteristics, depending on the conducting layers, are found in these structures. The thermal conductivities can be tuned by interlayer coupling, environment temperature and interlayer overlap. The highest thermal conductivity at room temperature is achieved as more than 5 times of tha…
We report simultaneous transport and scanning microwave impedance microscopy to examine the correlation between transport quantization and filling of the bulk Landau levels in the quantum Hall regime in gated graphene devices. Surprisingly, a comparison of these measurements reveals that quantized transport typically occurs below the complete filling of bulk Landau levels, when the bulk is still conductive. This result points to a revised understanding of transport quantization when carriers are accumulated by gating. We discuss the implications on transport study of the quantum Hall effect in…
