We review a calculation of the quantum corrections to electrical transport in graphene using the trajectory-based semiclassical method. Compared to conventional metals, for graphene the semiclassical propagator contains an additional pseudospin structure, which influences the results for weak localization, and interaction-induced effects, such as the Altshuler-Aronov correction and dephasing. Our results apply to a sample of graphene that is doped away from the Dirac point and subject to a smooth disorder potential, such that electrons follow classical trajectories. In such system, the Ehrenfest time enters as an additional timescale.
We study the dynamics of semiclassical electrons in (gapped) graphene in two complementary limits, i.e. in the Klein tunneling and valley Hall effect regimes, by scattering wave packets off armchair step potentials and by exposing wave packets to a uniform electric field, respectively. Our numerical wave packet simulation goes beyond semiclassical analytical approximations and standard Klein tunneling treatments and allows to study intra- and intervalley scattering processes. We find distinct Klein tunneling characteristics for low and tall steps, which include unusual Berry curvature induced …
We study the effect of trigonal warping on the focussing of electrons by n-p junctions in graphene. We find that perfect focussing, which was predicted for massless Dirac fermions, is only preserved for one specific sample orientation. In the general case, trigonal warping leads to the formation of cusp caustics, with a different position of the focus for graphene's two valleys. We develop a semiclassical theory to compute these positions and find very good agreement with tight-binding simulations. Considering the transmission as a function of potential strength, we find that trigonal warping …
We study above-barrier scattering of Dirac electrons by a smooth electrostatic potential combined with a coordinate-dependent mass in graphene. We assume that the potential and mass are sufficiently smooth, so that we can define a small dimensionless semiclassical parameter $h \ll 1$. This electronic optics setup naturally leads to focusing and the formation of caustics, which are singularities in the density of trajectories. We construct a semiclassical approximation for the wavefunction in all points, placing particular emphasis on the region near the caustic, where the maximum of the intens…
In moiré systems with twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), the amplification of Coulomb correlation effects at low twist angles ($θ$) is a result of nearly flat low-energy electronic bands and divergent density of states (DOS) at van Hove singularities (vHS). This not only causes superconductivity, Mott insulating states, and quantum anomalous Hall effect close to the critical (or magic) angle $θ= θ_{c} \approx 1.1^\circ$, but also unconventional metallic states that are claimed to exhibit non-Fermi liquid (NFL) excitations. However, unlike superconductivity and the correlation-induced gap in the …
Graphene has proven to host outstanding mesoscopic effects involving massless Dirac quasiparticles travelling ballistically resulting in the current flow exhibiting light-like behaviour. A new branch of 2D electronics inspired by the standard principles of optics is rapidly evolving, calling for a deeper understanding of transport in large-scale devices at a quantum level. Here we perform large-scale quantum transport calculations based on a tight-binding model of graphene and the non-equilibrium Green's function method and include the effects of $p-n$ junctions of different shape, magnetic fi…
We investigate coherent electron dynamics in graphene, interacting with the electric field waveform of two orthogonally polarized, few-cycle laser pulses. Recently, we demonstrated that linearly polarized driving pulses lead to sub-optical-cycle Landau-Zener quantum path interference by virtue of the combination of intraband motion and interband transition [Higuchi $\textit{et al.}$, Nature $\textbf{550}$, 224 (2017)]. Here we introduce a pulsed control laser beam, orthogonally polarized to the driving pulses, and observe the ensuing electron dynamics. The relative delay between the two pulses…
The feasibility of Veselago lensing in graphene with a p-n junction is investigated numerically for realistic injection leads. Two different set-ups with two narrow leads are considered with absorbing or reflecting side edges. This allows us to separately determine the influence of scattering on electron focusing for the edges and the p-n interface. Both semiclassical and tight-binding simulations show a distinctive peak in the transmission probability that is attributed to the Veselago lensing effect. We investigate the robustness of this peak on the width of the injector, the position of the…
A semiclassical theory of the Ehrenfest-time dependence of quantum transport in ballistic quantum dots
我们提出了一个基于量子力学的半经典计算方法,计算了具有理想点接触的弹道量子点的弱局域化修正和普适电导涨落的Eklfest-时间关系。当弱局域化校正与exp(-tau_E/tau_D)成正比时,电导的方差与tau_E无关,其中tau_E和tau_D分别是点的Ekfest时间和停留时间。后者与量子被踢旋转器的数值模拟一致[Tworzydlo等人,B 69,165318(2004)和Jacquod和Sukhorukov,Phys. Rev. Lett. 92,116801(2004)]。
Recent reports of spin-orbit coupling enhancement in chemically modified graphene have opened doors to studies of the spin Hall effect with massless chiral fermions. Here, we theoretically investigate the interaction and impurity density dependence of the extrinsic spin Hall effect in spin-orbit coupled graphene. We present a nonperturbative quantum diagrammatic calculation of the spin Hall response function in the strong-coupling regime that incorporates skew scattering and anomalous impurity density-independent contributions on equal footing. The spin Hall conductivity dependence on Fermi en…
Quantum dynamics and kinetics of electrically gated graphene ribbons with lateral n-p and e-n-p junctions under magnetic field are investigated. It is shown that the snake-like states of quasiparticles skipping along the n-p interface do not manifest themselve in the main semiclassical part of the ribbon conductance. Giant oscillations of the conductance of a ribbon with an n-p-n junction are predicted and analytically calculated. Depending on the number of junctions inside the ribbon its magnetoresistance may be controllably changed by 50% - 90% by an extremely small change of the magnetic fi…
Graphene superlattices were shown to exhibit high-temperature quantum oscillations due to periodic emergence of delocalized Bloch states in high magnetic fields such that unit fractions of the flux quantum pierce a superlattice unit cell. Under these conditions, semiclassical electron trajectories become straight again, similar to the case of zero magnetic field. Here we report magnetotransport measurements that reveal second, third and fourth order magnetic Bloch states at high electron densities and temperatures above 100 K. The recurrence of these states creates a fractal pattern intimately…
Quadratic detection in linear mesoscopic transport systems produces cross terms that can be viewed as interference signals reflecting statistical properties of charge carriers. In electronic systems these cross term interferences arise from exchange effects due to Pauli principle. Here we demonstrate fermionic Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) exchange phenomena due to indistinguishability of charge carriers in a diffusive graphene system. These exchange effects are verified using current-current cross correlations in combination with regular shot noise (autocorrelation) experiments at microwave f…
We present a semiclassical theory of linear and nonlinear optical response of graphene. The emphasis is placed on the nonlinear optical response of graphene from the standpoint of the underlying chiral symmetry. The Bloch quasiparticles in low energy limit, around the degeneracy points are dominantly chiral. It is shown for the first time that this chiral behavior in conjunction with scale invariance in graphene around the Dirac points results in the strong nonlinear optical response. Explicit expressions for the linear and nonlinear conductivity tensors are derived based on Semiconductor Bloc…
The Chapman-Enskog method, in combination with the quantum maximum entropy principle, is applied to the Wigner equation in order to obtain quantum Navier-Stokes equations for electrons in graphene in the isothermal case. The derivation is based on the quantum version of the maximum entropy principle and follows the lines of Ringhofer-Degond-Méhats' theory (J. Stat. Phys. 112, 2003 and Z. Angew. Math. Mech. 90, 2010). The model obtained in this way is then semiclassically expanded up to $\mathcal{O}(\hbar^2)$.

Using the semiclassical quantum Boltzmann theory and employing the Dirac model with twist angle-dependent Fermi velocity we obtain results for the electrical resistivity, the electronic thermal resistivity, the Seebeck coefficient, and the Wiedemann-Franz ratio in near magic angle twisted bilayer graphene, as functions of doping density (around the charge-neutrality-point) and modified Fermi velocity $\tilde v$. The $\tilde v$-dependence of the relevant scattering mechanisms, i.e. electron-hole Coulomb, long-ranged impurities, and acoustic gauge phonons, is considered in detail. We find a rang…
In the present paper, the collective near-field effects in a two-graphene sheets plasmonic waveguide loaded with an array of Ag$_2$Se quantum dots excited by external radiation are theoretically studied. This research aims to develop a theoretical approach to realizing controllable excitation and the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in planar graphene waveguides. The proposed model is based on the semiclassical description that implies the dispersion equation's solution for SPPs excited in two coupled graphene sheets and the embedded quantum dots' energy spectra analysis. Using…
By using a non-local, quantum mechanical response function we study graphene plasmons in a one-dimensional superlattice (SL) potential $V_0 \cos G_0x$. The SL introduces a quantum energy scale $E_G \sim \hbar v_F G_0$ associated to electronic sub-band transitions. At energies lower than $E_G$, the plasmon dispersion is highly anisotropic; plasmons propagate perpendicularly to the SL axis, but become damped by electronic transitions along the SL direction. These results question the validity of semiclassical approximations for describing low energy plasmons in periodic structures. At higher ene…
We consider graphene superlattice miniband fermions probed by electronic interferometry in magneto-transport experiments. By decoding the observed Fabry-Pérot interference patterns together with our corresponding quantum transport simulations, we find that the Dirac quasiparticles originating from the superlattice minibands do not undergo conventional cyclotron motion but follow more subtle trajectories. In particular, dynamics at low magnetic fields is characterized by peculiar, straight trajectory segments. Our results provide new insights into superlattice miniband fermions and open up nove…
We develop the stub model for the Dirac Quantum Dot, an electron confining device on a grapheme surface. Analytical results for the average conductance and the correlation functions are obtained and found in agreement with those found previously using semiclassical calculation. Comparison with available data are presented. The results reported here demonstrate the applicability of Random Matrix Theory in the case of Dirac electrons confined in a stadium.
We derive semiclassical equations of motion for an accelerated wavepacket in a two-band system. We show that these equations can be formulated in terms of the static band geometry described by the quantum metric. We consider the specific cases of the Rashba Hamiltonian with and without a Zeeman term. The semiclassical trajectories are in full agreement with the ones found by solving the Schrödinger equation. This formalism successfully describes the adiabatic limit and the anomalous Hall effect traditionally attributed to Berry curvature. It also describes the opposite limit of coherent band s…
Using the semiclassical quantum Boltzmann equation (QBE), we numerically calculate the DC transport properties of bilayer graphene near charge neutrality. We find, in contrast to prior discussions, that phonon scattering is crucial even at temperatures below 40K. Nonetheless, electron-electron scattering still dominates over phonon collisions allowing a hydrodynamic approach. We introduce a simple two-fluid hydrodynamic model of electrons and holes interacting via Coulomb drag and compare our results to the full QBE calculation. We show that the two-fluid model produces quantitatively accurate…
In this work we describe semiclassical states in graphene under a constant perpendicular magnetic field by constructing coherent states in the Barut-Girardello sense. Since we want to keep track of the angular momentum, the use of the symmetric gauge and polar coordinates seemed the most logical choice. Different classes of coherent states are obtained by means of the underlying algebra system, which consists of the direct sum of two Heisenberg-Weyl algebras. The most interesting cases are a kind of partial coherent states and the coherent states with a well-defined total angular momentum.
