In this paper we introduce and study a self-similar Gaussian process that is the bifractional Brownian motion $B^{H,K}$ with parameters $H\in (0,1)$ and $K\in(1,2)$ such that $HK\in(0,1)$. A remarkable difference between the case $K\in(0,1)$ and our situation is that this process is a semimartingale when $2HK=1$.
Using the Malliavin calculus with respect to Gaussian processes and the multiple stochastic integrals we derive Itô's and Tanaka's formulas for the $d$-dimensional bifractional Brownian motion.
In this paper we show a decomposition of the bifractional Brownian motion with parameters H,K into the sum of a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter HK plus a stochastic process with absolutely continuous trajectories. Some applications of this decomposition are discussed.
Let $B^{H,K}=(B^{H,K}_{t}, t\geq 0)$ be a bifractional Brownian motion with two parameters $H\in (0,1)$ and $K\in(0,1]$. The main result of this paper is that the increment process generated by the bifractional Brownian motion $(B^{H,K}_{h+t} -B^{H,K}_{h}, t\geq 0)$ converges when $h\to \infty$ to $(2^{(1-K)/{2}}B^{HK}_{t}, t\geq 0)$, where $(B^{HK}_{t}, t\geq 0)$ is the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $HK$. We also study the behavior of the noise associated to the bifractional Brownian motion and limit theorems to $B^{H,K}$.
Bifractional Brownian motion (bfBm) is a centered Gaussian process with covariance \[ R^{(H,K)}(s,t)= 2^{-K} \left( \left(|s|^{2H}+|t|^{2H} \right)^{K}-|t-s|^{2HK}\right), \qquad s,t\in R. \] We study the existence of bfBm for a given pair of parameters $(H,K)$ and encounter some related limiting processes.
We prove that for any pair of i.i.d. random variables $X,Y$ with finite moment of order $a \in (0,2]$ it is true that $E |X-Y|^a \leq E |X+Y|^a$. Surprisingly, this inequality turns out to be related with bifractional Brownian motion. We extend this result to Bernstein functions and provide some counter-examples.
Let $B^{H, K}= \big\{B^{H, K}(t), t \in \R_+ \big\}$ be a bifractional Brownian motion in $\R^d$. We prove that $B^{H, K}$ is strongly locally nondeterministic. Applying this property and a stochastic integral representation of $B^{H, K}$, we establish Chung's law of the iterated logarithm for $B^{H, K}$, as well as sharp Hölder conditions and tail probability estimates for the local times of $B^{H, K}$. We also consider the existence and the regularity of the local times of multiparameter bifractional Brownian motion $B^{\bar{H}, \bar{K}}= \big\{B^{\bar{H}, \bar{K}}(t), t \in \R^N_+ \big\}$ i…
Our aim in this paper is to improve Hölder continuity results for the bifractional Brownian motion (bBm) $(B^{α,β}(t))_{t\in[0,1] }$ with $0<α<1$ and $0<β\leq 1$. We prove that almost all paths of the bBm belong (resp. do not belong) to the Besov spaces $\mathbf{Bes}(αβ,p)$ (resp. $\mathbf{bes}(αβ,p)$) for any $\frac{1}{αβ}<p<\infty$, where $\mathbf{bes}(αβ,p)$ is a separable subspace of $\mathbf{Bes}(αβ,p)$. We also show the Itô-Nisio theorem for the bBm with $αβ>\frac{1}{2}$ in the Hölder spaces $\mathcal{C}^γ$, with $γ<αβ$.
Let $B$ be a bifractional Brownian motion with parameters $H\in (0, 1)$ and $K\in(0,1]$. For any $n\geq1$, set $Z_n =\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}\big[n^{2HK}(B_{(i+1)/n}-B_{i/n})^2-\E((B_{i+1}-B_{i})^2)\big]$. We use the Malliavin calculus and the so-called Stein's method on Wiener chaos introduced by Nourdin and Peccati \cite{NP09} to derive, in the case when $0<HK\leq3/4$, Berry-Esséen-type bounds for the Kolmogorov distance between the law of the correct renormalization $V_n$ of $Z_n$ and the standard normal law. Finally, we study almost sure central limit theorems for the sequence $V_n$.
Bifractional Brownian motion on $\mathbb{R}_+$ is a two parameter centered Gaussian process with covariance function: \[ R_{H,K} (t,s)=\frac 1{2^K}\left(\left(t^{2H}+s^{2H}\right)^K-\ |{t-s}\ |^{2HK}\right), \qquad s,t\ge 0. \] This process has been originally introduced by Houdré and Villa (2003) for the range of parameters $H\in (0,1]$ and $K\in (0,1]$. Since then, the range of parameters, for which $R_{H,K}$ is known to be nonnegative definite has been somewhat extended, but the full range is still not known. We give an elementary proof that $R_{H,K}$ is nonnegative definite for parameters …
We study sufficient conditions which ensure that the probability measures generated by two bifractional Brownian motions on an interval [0,1] are singular with respect to each other and sufficient conditions for the probability measures generated by two trifractional Brownian motions on an interval [0,1] are singular with respect to each other.
In this paper, firstly, we generalize the definition of the bifractional Brownian motion $B^{H,K}:=\Big(B^{H,K}\;;\;t\geq 0\Big)$, with parameters $H\in(0,1)$ and $K\in(0,1]$, to the case where $H$ is no longer a constant, but a function $H(.)$ of the time index $t$ of the process. We denote this new process by $B^{H(.),K}$. Secondly, we study its time regularities, the local asymptotic self-similarity and the long-range dependence properties. {\bf Key words:} {Gaussian process; Self similar process; Fractional Brownian motion; Bifractional Brownian motion; Multifractional Brownian motion; Loc…
We study the law of the solution to the stochastic heat equation with additive Gaussian noise which behaves as the fractional Brownian motion in time and is white in space. We prove a decomposition of the solution in terms of the bifractional Brownian motion.
The purpose of this paper is to establish the convergence in law of the sequence of "midpoint" Riemann sums for a stochastic process of the form f'(W), where W is a Gaussian process whose covariance function satisfies some technical conditions. As a consequence we derive a change-of-variable formula in law with a second order correction term which is an Itô integral of f''(W) with respect to a Gaussian martingale independent of W. The proof of the convergence in law is based on the techniques of Malliavin calculus and uses a central limit theorem for q-fold Skorohod integrals, which is a multi…
We consider a stochastic process $Y$ defined by an integral in quadratic mean of a deterministic function $f$ with respect to a Gaussian process $X$, which need not have stationary increments. For a class of Gaussian processes $X$, it is proved that sums of properly weighted powers of increments of $Y$ over a sequence of partitions of a time interval converge almost surely. The conditions of this result are expressed in terms of the $p$-variation of the covariance function of $X$. In particular, the result holds when $X$ is a fractional Brownian motion, a subfractional Brownian motion and a bi…
We prove transportation-cost inequalities for the law of SDE solutions driven by general Gaussian processes. Examples include the fractional Brownian motion, but also more general processes like bifractional Brownian motion. In case of multiplicative noise, our main tool is Lyons' rough paths theory. We also give a new proof of Talagrand's transportation-cost inequality on Gaussian Fréchet spaces. We finally show that establishing transportation-cost inequalities implies that there is an easy criterion for proving Gaussian tail estimates for functions defined on that space. This result can be …
In this paper, we consider the explicit bound for the second-order approximation of the quadratic variation of a general fractional Gaussian process $(G_t)_{t\ge 0}$. The second order mixed partial derivative of the covariance function $ R(t,\, s)=\mathbb{E}[G_t G_s]$ can be decomposed into two parts, one of which coincides with that of fractional Brownian motion and the other of which is bounded by $(ts)^{H-1}$ up to a constant factor. This condition is valid for a class of continuous Gaussian processes that fails to be self-similar or have stationary increments. %Some examples include the su…
The statistical analysis for equations driven by fractional Gaussian process (fGp) is relatively recent. The development of stochastic calculus with respect to the fGp allowed to study such models. In the present paper we consider the drift parameter estimation problem for the non-ergodic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process defined as $dX_t=θX_tdt+dG_t,\ t\geq0$ with an unknown parameter $θ>0$, where $G$ is a Gaussian process. We provide sufficient conditions, based on the properties of $G$, ensuring the strong consistency and the asymptotic distribution of our estimator $\widetildeθ_t$ of $θ$ based on…
We present a two-dimensional extension of an identity in distribution due to Bougerol \cite{Bou} that involves the exponential functional of a linear Brownian motion. Even though this identity does not extend at the level of processes, we point at further striking relations in this direction.
We study the pointwise regularity of the Multifractional Brownian Motion and in particular, we get the existence of slow points. It shows that a non self-similar process can still enjoy this property. We also consider various extensions of our results in the aim of requesting a weaker regularity assumption for the Hurst function without altering the regularity of the process.
The regular Dirichlet extension is the dual concept of regular Dirichlet subspace. The main purpose of this paper is to characterize all the regular Dirichlet extensions of one-dimensional Brownian motion and to explore their structures. It is shown that every regular Dirichlet extension of one-dimensional Brownian motion may essentially decomposed into at most countable disjoint invariant intervals and an $\mathcal{E}$-polar set relative to this regular Dirichlet extension. On each invariant interval the regular Dirichlet extension is characterized uniquely by a scale function in a given clas…
In previous works, we have developed a new Malliavin calculus on the Poisson space based on the lent particle formula. The aim of this work is to prove that, on the Wiener space for the standard Ornstein-Uhlenbeck structure, we also have such a formula which permits to calculate easily and intuitively the Malliavin derivative of a functional. Our approach uses chaos extensions associated to stationary processes of rotations of normal martingales.
In this paper we study three self-similar, long-range dependence, Gaussian processes. The first one, with covariance \int_0^{s\wedge t} u^a [(t-u)^b+(s-u)^b]du, parameters a>-1, -1<b\leq 1, |b|\leq 1+a, corresponds to fractional Brownian motion for a=0, -1<b<1. The second one, with covariance (2-h)(s^h+t^h-[(s+t)^h +|s-t|^h]/2), parameter 0<h\leq 4, corresponds to sub-fractional Brownian motion for 0<h<2. The third one, with covariance -(s^2\log s + t^2\log t -[(s+t)^2 \log (s+t) +(s-t)^2 \log |s-t|]/2), is related to the second one. These processes come from occupation time fluctuations of ce…
Assume that $X$ is a continuous square integrable process with zero mean, defined on some probability space $(Ω,\mathrm {F},\mathrm {P})$. The classical characterization due to P. Lévy says that $X$ is a Brownian motion if and only if $X$ and $X_t^2-t$, $t\ge0,$ are martingales with respect to the intrinsic filtration $\mathrm {F}^X$. We extend this result to fractional Brownian motion.
Multifractional Brownian motion is an extension of the well-known fractional Brownian motion where the Holder regularity is allowed to vary along the paths. In this paper, two kind of multi-parameter extensions of mBm are studied: one is isotropic while the other is not. For each of these processes, a moving average representation, a harmonizable representation, and the covariance structure are given. The Holder regularity is then studied. In particular, the case of an irregular exponent function H is investigated. In this situation, the almost sure pointwise and local Holder exponents of the …
Let $D$ be an unbounded domain in $\RR^d$ with $d\geq 3$. We show that if $D$ contains an unbounded uniform domain, then the symmetric reflecting Brownian motion (RBM) on $\overline D$ is transient. Next assume that RBM $X$ on $\overline D$ is transient and let $Y$ be its time change by Revuz measure ${\bf 1}_D(x) m(x)dx$ for a strictly positive continuous integrable function $m$ on $\overline D$. We further show that if there is some $r>0$ so that $D\setminus \overline {B(0, r)}$ is an unbounded uniform domain, then $Y$ admits one and only one symmetric diffusion that genuinely extends it and…
Let $B=\{ B_{t}\} _{t\ge 0}$ be a one-dimensional standard Brownian motion and denote by $A_{t},\,t\ge 0$, the quadratic variation of the geometric Brownian motion $e^{B_{t}},\,t\ge 0$. Bougerol's celebrated identity (1983) asserts that, if $β=\{ β(t)\} _{t\ge 0}$ is another Brownian motion independent of $B$, then $β(A_{t})$ is identical in law with $\sinh B_{t}$ for every fixed $t>0$. In this paper, we extend Bougerol's identity to an identity in law for processes up to time $t$, which exhibits a certain invariance of the law of Brownian motion. The extension is described in terms of anticip…
We consider a Brownian motion forced to stay in the quadrant by an electrostatic oblique repulsion from the sides. We tackle the question of hitting the corner or an edge, and find product-form stationary measures under a certain condition, which is reminiscent of the skew-symmetry condition for an obliquely reflected Brownian motion.
This paper surveys the results of recent collaborations with Eric Derbez and with Takashi Hara, which show that intergrated super-Brownian excursion (ISE) arises as the scaling limit of both lattice trees and the incipient infinite percolation cluster, in high dimensions. A potential extension to oriented percolation is also mentioned.
We define an equation on a simple graph which is an extension of Tanaka equation and the skew Brownian motion equation. We then apply the theory of transition kernels developped by Le Jan and Raimond and show that all the solutions can be classified by probability measures.
Our concern in this paper is the energy form induced by an eigenfunction of a self-adjoint extension of the restriction of the Laplace operator to $C_c^\infty(\mathbf{R}^3\setminus \{0\})$. We will prove that this energy form is a regular Dirichlet form with core $C_c^\infty(\mathbf{R}^3)$. The associated diffusion $X$ behaves like a $3$-dimensional Brownian motion with a mild radial drift when far from $0$, subject to an ever-stronger push toward $0$ near that point. In particular $\{0\}$ is not a polar set with respect to $X$. The diffusion $X$ is rotation invariant, and admits a skew-produc…
Extensions of the fractional Brownian fields are constructed over a complete Riemannian manifold. This construction is carried out for the full range of the Hurst parameter $α\in(0,1)$. In particular, we establish existence, distributional scaling (self-similiarity), stationarity of the increments, and almost sure Hölder continuity of sample paths. Stationary counterparts to these fields are also constructed.
It is well known that martingale difference sequences are very useful in applications and theory. On the other hand, the operator fractional Brownian motion as an extension of the well-known fractional Brownian motion also plays important role in both applications and theory. In this paper, we study the relationship between them. We will construct an approximation sequence of operator fractional Brownian motion based on a martingale difference sequence.
It is shown that the law of an SDE driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter greater than 1/2 has a smooth density with respect to Lebesgue measure, provided that the driving vector fields satisfy Hörmander's condition. The main new ingredient of the proof is an extension of Norris' lemma to this situation.
The objective of this paper is to derive a representation of symmetric G-martingales as stochastic integrals with respect to the G-Brownian motion. For this end, we first study some extensions of stochastic calculus with respect to G-martingales under the sublinear expectation spaces.
In this note we prove that the probability measures generated by two generalized grey Brownian motions with different parameters are singular with respect to each other. This result can be interpreted as an extension of the Feldman-Hájek dichotomy of Gaussian measures to a family of non-Gaussian measures
We consider anisotropic self-similar random fields, in particular, the fractional Brownian sheet. This Gaussian field is an extension of fractional Brownian motion. We prove some properties of covariance function for self-similar fields with rectangular increments. Using Lamperti transformation we obtain properties of covariance function for the corresponding stationary fields. We present an example of a Gaussian self-similar field with stationary rectangular increments that is not a fractional Brownian sheet.
In the setting of finite reflection groups, we prove that the projection of a Brownian motion onto a closed Weyl chamber is another Brownian motion normally reflected on the walls of the chamber. Our proof is probabilistic and the decomposition we obtain may be seen as a multidimensional extension of Tanaka's formula for linear Brownian motion. The paper is closed with a description of the boundary process through the local times at zero of the distances from the initial process to the facets.
We prove a Chung-type law of the iterated logarithm for a multiparameter extension of the fractional Brownian motion which is not increment stationary. This multiparameter fractional Brownian motion behaves very differently at the origin and away from the axes, which also appears in the Hausdorff dimension of its range and in the measure of its pointwise Hölder exponents. A functional version of this Chung-type law is also provided.
In this work, we will show the existence, uniqueness, and weak differentiability of the solution to semi-linear mean-field stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion. We prove an extension of the Bismut-Elworthy-Li formula and show some applications in the sensitivity analysis of variance swaps and also the price of derivatives with respect to the initial point.
This article summarizes the various ways one may use to construct the Skew Brownian motion, and shows their connections. Recent applications of this process in modelling and numerical simulation motivates this survey. This article ends with a brief account of related results, extensions and applications of the Skew Brownian motion.
This article is concerned with modulus of continuity of Brownian local times. Specifically, we focus on 3 closely related problems: (a) Limit theorem for a Brownian modulus of continuity involving Riesz potentials, where the limit law is an intricate Gaussian mixture. (b) Central limit theorems for the projections of L2 modulus of continuity for a 1-dimensional Brownian motion. (c) Extension of the second result to a 2-dimensional Brownian motion. Our proofs rely on a combination of stochastic calculus and Malliavin calculus tools, plus a thorough analysis of singular integrals.
A new extension of the sub-fractional Brownian motion, and thus of the Brownian motion, is introduced. It is a linear combination of a finite number of sub-fractional Brownian motions, that we have chosen to call the mixed sub-fractional Brownian motion. In this paper, we study some basic properties of this process, its non-Markovian and non-stationarity characteristics, the conditions under which it is a semimartingale, and the main features of its sample paths. We also show that this process could serve to get a good model of certain phenomena, taking not only the sign (like in the case of t…
We show that a space-time rescaling of the spatial Lamba-Fleming-Viot process of Barton and Etheridge converges to super-Brownian motion. This can be viewed as an extension of a result of Chetwynd-Diggle and Etheridge (2018). In that work the scaled impact factors (which govern the event based dynamics) vanish in the limit, here we drop that requirement. The analysis is particularly interesting in the biologically relevant two-dimensional case.
We study the model of binary branching Brownian motion with spatially-inhomogeneous branching rate $βδ_0(\cdot)$, where $δ_0(\cdot)$ is the Dirac delta function and $β$ is some positive constant. We show that the distribution of the rightmost particle centred about $\fracβ{2}t$ converges to a mixture of Gumbel distributions according to a martingale limit. Our results form a natural extension to S. Lalley and T. Sellke [6] for the degenerate case of catalytic branching.
This work contributes a systematic survey and complementary insights of reflecting Brownian motion and its properties. Extension of the Skorohod problem's solution to more general cases is investigated, based on which a discussion is further conducted on the existence of solutions for a few particular kinds of stochastic differential equations with a reflected boundary. It is proved that the multidimensional version of the Skorohod equation can be solved under the assumption of a convex domain (D).
The $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion (FBM for short) $B_t=((B_t^{(1)},...,B_t^{(d)}),t\in\mathbb{R})$ with Hurst exponent $α$, $α\in(0,1)$, is a $d$-dimensional centered, self-similar Gaussian process with covariance ${\mathbb{E}}[B_s^{(i)}B _t^{(j)}]={1/2}δ_{i,j}(|s|^{2α}+|t|^{2α}-|t-s|^{2 α}).$ The long-standing problem of defining a stochastic integration with respect to FBM (and the related problem of solving stochastic differential equations driven by FBM) has been addressed successfully by several different methods, although in each case with a restriction on the range of eithe…
Trees in Brownian excursions have been studied since the late 1980s. Forests in excursions of Brownian motion above its past minimum are a natural extension of this notion. In this paper we study a forest-valued Markov process which describes the growth of the Brownian forest. The key result is a composition rule for binary Galton--Watson forests with i.i.d. exponential branch lengths. We give elementary proofs of this composition rule and explain how it is intimately linked with Williams' decomposition for Brownian motion with drift.
In this paper we prove the existence of strong solutions to a SDE with a generalized drift driven by a multidimensional fractional Brownian motion for small Hurst parameters H<1/2. Here the generalized drift is given as the local time of the unknown solution process, which can be considered an extension of the concept of a skew Brownian motion to the case of fractional Brownian motion. Our approach for the construction of strong solutions is new and relies on techniques from Malliavin calculus combined with a "local time variational calculus" argument.
Let $B=\{ B_{t}\} _{t\ge 0}$ be a one-dimensional standard Brownian motion and denote by $A_{t},\,t\ge 0$, the quadratic variation of $e^{B_{t}},\,t\ge 0$. The celebrated Bougerol's identity in law (1983) asserts that, if $β=\{ β_{t}\} _{t\ge 0}$ is another Brownian motion independent of $B$, then $β_{A_{t}}$ has the same law as $\sinh B_{t}$ for every fixed $t>0$. Bertoin, Dufresne and Yor (2013) obtained a two-dimensional extension of the identity involving as the second coordinates the local times of $B$ and $β$ at level zero. In this paper, we present a generalization of their extension in…
Let $τ_{D}(Z) $ is the first exit time of iterated Brownian motion from a domain $D \subset \RR{R}^{n}$ started at $z\in D$ and let $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z) >t]$ be its distribution. In this paper we establish the exact asymptotics of $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z) >t]$ over bounded domains as an extension of the result in DeBlassie \cite{deblassie}, for $z\in D$ $$ P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z)>t]\approx t^{1/2} \exp(-{3/2}π^{2/3}λ_{D}^{2/3}t^{1/3}), as t\to\infty . $$ We also study asymptotics of the life time of Brownian-time Brownian motion (BTBM), $Z^{1}_{t}=z+X(Y(t))$, where $X_{t}$ and $Y_{t}$ are independent one-dimensional…
We raise a question on whether a dynamical system driven by Markov process is Markovian, for which we are able to propose a criterion and examples of positive case. This investigation leads us to develop (i) a general construction of intertwining dual via Liggett duality, and (ii) a realization of $Λ$-linked coupling in a form of dynamical system. We show this construction of intertwining dual and $Λ$-linked coupling for an $n$-dimensional drifting Brownian motion when it is a characteristic diffusion. In particular, it includes an extension of Pitman's $2M-W$ theorem by Rogers and Pitman as a…
It has been known for some time that the Green's function of a planar domain can be defined in terms of the exit time of Brownian motion, and this definition has been extended to stopping times more general than exit times. In this paper, we extend the notion of conformal invariance of Green's function to analytic functions which are not injective, and use this extension to calculate the Green's function for a stopping time defined by the winding of Brownian motion. These considerations lead to a new proof of the Riemann mapping theorem. We also show how this invariance can be used to deduce s…
