We introduce a simplified model for the minimization of the elastic energy in thin shells. This model is not obtained by an asymptotic analysis. The thickness of the shell remains a parameter as in Reisner-Mindlin's model for plates and Koiter's model for shells in the linear case. The simplified model admits always minimizers by contrast with the original one. We show the relevance of our approach by proving that the minimum of the simplified model and the infimum of the full model have the same limit as the thickness tends to 0.
Using a geometrically motivated 8-parameter ansatz through the thickness, we reduce a three-dimensional shell-like geometrically nonlinear Cosserat material to a fully two-dimensional shell model. Curvature effects are fully taken into account. For elastic isotropic Cosserat materials, the integration through the thickness can be performed analytically and a generalized plane stress condition allows for a closed-form expression of the thickness stretch and the nonsymmetric shift of the midsurface in bending. We obtain an explicit form of the elastic strain energy density for Cosserat shells, i…
It is shown that in core-radius cutoff regularized simplified elasticity (where the elastic energy depends quadratically on the full displacement gradient rather than its symmetrized version), the force on a dislocation curve by the negative gradient of the elastic energy asymptotically approaches the mean curvature of the curve as the cutoff radius converges to zero. Rigorous error bounds in Hölder spaces are provided. As an application, convergence of dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the elastic energy to dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the arclength functional, when t…
We study the motion of a compressible heat-conducting fluid in three dimensions interacting with a non-linear flexible shell. The fluid is described by the full Navier--Stokes--Fourier system. The shell constitutes an unknown part of the boundary of the physical domain of the fluid and is changing in time. The solid is described as an elastic non-linear shell of Koiter type; in particular it possesses a non-convex elastic energy. Its deformation is modelled by a (non-linear) elastic Koiter shell. We show the existence of a weak solution to the corresponding system of PDEs which exists until th…
We present an existence theorem for a large class of nonlinearly elastic shells with low regularity in the framework of a two-dimensional theory involving the mean and Gaussian curvatures. We restrict our discussion to hyperelastic materials, that is to elastic materials possessing a stored energy function. Under some specific conditions of polyconvexity, coerciveness and growth of the stored energy function, we prove the existence of global minimizers. In addition, we define a general class of polyconvex stored energy functions which satisfies a coerciveness inequality.
In this paper we investigate the deformation of cylindrical linearly elastic shells using the Koiter model. We formulate and solve the relaxed Saint-Venant's problem for thin cylindrical tubes made of isotropic and homogeneous elastic materials. To this aim, we adapt a method established previously in the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. We present a general solution procedure to determine closed-form solutions for the extension, bending, torsion and flexure problems. We remark the analogy and formal resemblance of these solutions to the classical Saint-Venant's solutions for solid cyli…
How much energy does it take to stamp a thin elastic shell flat? Motivated by recent experiments on the wrinkling patterns of floating shells, we develop a rigorous method via $Γ$-convergence for answering this question to leading order in the shell's thickness and other small parameters. The observed patterns involve "ordered" regions of well-defined wrinkles alongside "disordered" regions whose local features are less robust; as little to no tension is applied, the preference for order is not a priori clear. Rescaling by the energy of a typical pattern, we derive a limiting variational probl…
For curves of prescribed length embedded into the unit disc in two dimensions, we obtain scaling results for the minimal elastic energy as the length just exceeds $2π$ and in the large length limit. In the small excess length case, we prove convergence to a fourth order obstacle type problem with integral constraint on the real line which we then solve. From the solution, we obtain the first order coefficient $Θ\approx 37$ in the energy expansion $2π+ Θδ^{1/3} + o(δ^{1/3})$ when a curve has length $2π+ δ$. We present an application of the scaling result to buckling in two-layer cylindrical she…
In this paper, we derive a dimensionally reduced model for a thin film prestrained with a given incompatible Riemannian metric: $$G^h(x',x_3)=I_3+2h^γ\,S(x')+2h^{γ/2}\,x_3B(x')+h.o.t, \,\,\,γ>2,$$ where $0<h\ll 1$ is the thickness of the film. The problem is studied rigorously by using a variational approach and establishing the $Γ$-convergence of the non-Euclidean version of the nonlinear elasticity functional. It is shown that the residual nonlinear elastic energy scales as $O(h^{γ+2})$ as $h\to 0$.
This paper investigates the optimal distribution of hard and soft material on elastic plates. In the class of isometric deformations stationary points of a Kirchhoff plate functional with incorporated material hardness function are investigated and a compliance cost functional is taken into account. Under symmetry assumptions on the material distribution and the load it is shown that cylindrical solutions are stationary points. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the optimal design of cylindrically deforming, clamped rectangular plates is non trivial, i.e. with a material distribution which i…
Complex textured surfaces occur in nature and industry, from fingerprints to lithography-based micropatterns. Wrinkling by confinement to an incompatible substrate is an attractive way of generating reconfigurable patterned topographies, but controlling the often asymmetric and apparently stochastic wrinkles that result remains an elusive goal. Here, we describe a new approach to understanding the wrinkles of confined elastic shells, using a Lagrange multiplier in place of stress. Our theory reveals a simple set of geometric rules predicting the emergence and layout of orderly wrinkles, and ex…

In this paper we derive the linear elastic Cosserat shell model incorporating effects up to order $O(h^5)$ in the shell thickness $h$ as a particular case of the recently introduced geometrically nonlinear elastic Cosserat shell model. The existence and uniqueness of the solution is proven in suitable admissible sets. To this end, inequalities of Korn-type for shells are established which allow to show coercivity in the Lax-Milgram theorem. We are also showing an existence and uniqueness result for a truncated $O(h^3)$ model. Main issue is the suitable treatment of the curved reference configu…
