Symplectic forms taming complex structures on compact manifolds are strictly related to Hermitian metrics having the fundamental form $\partial \bar \partial $-closed, i.e. to strong Kähler with torsion (${\rm SKT}$) metrics. It is still an open problem to exhibit a compact example of a complex manifold having a tamed symplectic structure but non-admitting Kähler structures. We show some negative results for the existence of symplectic forms taming complex structures on compact quotients of Lie groups by discrete subgroups. In particular, we prove that if $M$ is a nilmanifold (not a torus) endowed with an invariant complex structure $J$, then $(M, J)$ does not admit any symplectic form taming $J$. Moreover, we show that if a nilmanifold $M$ endowed with an invariant complex structure $J$ admits an ${\rm SKT}$ metric, then $M$ is at most 2-step. As a consequence we classify 8-dimensional nilmanifolds endowed with an invariant complex structure admitting an SKT metric.
We study the existence of strong Kähler with torsion (SKT) metrics and of symplectic forms taming invariant complex structures $J$ on solvmanifolds $G/Γ$ providing some negative results for some classes of solvmanifolds. In particular, we show that if either $J$ is invariant under the action of a nilpotent complement of the nilradical of $G$ or $J$ is abelian or $G$ is almost abelian (not of type (I)), then the solvmanifold $G/Γ$ cannot admit any symplectic form taming the complex structure $J$, unless $G/Γ$ is Kähler. As a consequence, we show that the family of non-Kähler complex manifolds c…
We study evolution of (strong Kähler with torsion) SKT structures via the pluriclosed flow on complex nilmanifolds, i.e. on compact quotients of simply connected nilpotent Lie groups by discrete subgroups endowed with an invariant complex structure. Adapting to our case the techniques introduced by Jorge Lauret for studying Ricci flow on homogeneous spaces we show that for SKT Lie algebras the pluriclosed flow is equivalent to a bracket flow and we prove a long time existence result in the nilpotent case. Finally, we introduce a natural flow for evolving tamed symplectic forms on a complex man…
We introduce certain homology and cohomology subgroups for any almost complex structure and study their pureness, fullness and duality properties. Motivated by a question of Donaldson, we use these groups to relate J-tamed symplectic cones and J-compatible symplectic cones over a large class of almost complex manifolds, including all Kahler manifolds, almost Kahler 4-manifolds and complex surfaces.
We show that symplectic forms taming complex structures on compact manifolds are related to special types of almost generalized Kähler structures. By considering the commutator $Q$ of the two associated almost complex structures $J_{\pm}$, we prove that if either the manifold is 4-dimensional or the distribution ${Im} \, Q$ is involutive, then the manifold can be expressed locally as a disjoint union of twisted Poisson leaves.
A compact solvmanifold of completely solvable type, i.e. a compact quotient of a completely solvable Lie group by a lattice, has a Kähler structure if and only if it is a complex torus. We show more in general that a compact solvmanifold $M$ of completely solvable type endowed with an invariant complex structure $J$ admits a symplectic form taming J if and only if $M$ is a complex torus. This result generalizes the one obtained in [7] for nilmanifolds.
A Hermitian metric on a complex manifold is called strong Kähler with torsion (SKT) if its fundamental 2-form $ω$ is $\partial \bar \partial$-closed. We review some properties of strong KT metrics also in relation with symplectic forms taming complex structures. Starting from a $2n$-dimensional SKT Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ {and using} a Hermitian flat connection on $\mathfrak g$ we construct a $4n$-dimensional SKT Lie algebra. We apply this method to some 4-dimensional SKT Lie algebras. Moreover, we classify symplectic forms taming complex structures on 4-dimensional Lie algebras.
Reformulations of Donaldson's "tamed to compatible" question are obtained in terms of spaces of exact forms on a compact almost complex manifold $(M^{2n},J)$. In dimension 4, we show that $J$ admits a compatible symplectic form if and only if $J$ admits tamed symplectic forms with arbitrarily given $J$-anti-invariant parts. Some observations about the cohomology of $J$-modified de Rham complexes are also made.
In this paper, we introduce the notions of $p$-Hermitian-symplectic and $p$-pluriclosed compact complex manifolds as generalisations for an arbitrary positive integer $p$ not exceeding the complex dimension of the manifold of the standard notions of Hermitian-symplectic and SKT manifolds that correspond to the case $p=1$. We then notice that these two properties are equivalent on $\partial\bar{\partial}$-manifolds and go on to prove that in (smooth) complex analytic families of $\partial\bar{\partial}$-manifolds, they are deformation open. Concerning closedness results, we prove that the cones…
The main result of this paper is to study the local deformations of Calabi-Yau $\partial\bar{\partial}$-manifold that are co-polarised by the Gauduchon metric by considering the subfamily of co-polarised fibres by the class of Aeppli/De Rham-Gauduchon cohomology of Gauduchon metric given at the beginning on the central fibre. In the latter part, we prove that the $p$-SKT $h$-$\partial\bar{\partial}$-property is deformation open by constructing and studying a new notion called $hp$-Hermitian symplectic ($hp$-HS) form.
This paper proves that on any tamed closed almost complex four-manifold $(M,J)$ whose dimension of $J$-anti-invariant cohomology is equal to the self-dual second Betti number minus one, there exists a new symplectic form compatible with the given almost complex structure $J$. In particular, if the self-dual second Betti number is one, we give an affirmative answer to a question of Donaldson for tamed closed almost complex four-manifolds. Our approach is along the lines used by Buchdahl to give a unified proof of the Kodaira conjecture.
We prove that the group of Hamiltonian automorphisms of a symplectic 4-manifold contains only finitely many conjugacy classes of maximal compact tori with respect to the action of the full symplectomorphism group. We also extend to rational and ruled manifolds a result of Kedra which asserts that, if $M$ is a simply connected symplectic 4-manifold with $b_{2}\geq 3$, and if $\widetilde{M}_δ$ denotes a blow-up of $M$ of small enough capacity $δ$, then the rational cohomology algebra of the Hamiltonian group of $\widetilde{M}_δ)$ is not finitely generated. Both results are based on the fact that…
Following T.-J. Li, W. Zhang [Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.], we continue to study the link between the cohomology of an almost-complex manifold and its almost-complex structure. In particular, we apply the same argument in [T.-J. Li, W. Zhang, Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.] and the results obtained by D. Sullivan in [Cycles for the dynamical study of foliated manifolds and complex manifolds, Invent. Math.] t…
For any compact almost complex manifold $(M,J)$, the last two authors defined two subgroups $H_J^+(M)$, $H_J^-(M)$ of the degree 2 real de Rham cohomology group $H^2(M, \mathbb{R})$ in arXiv:0708.2520. These are the sets of cohomology classes which can be represented by $J$-invariant, respectively, $J$-anti-invariant real $2-$forms. In this note, it is shown that in dimension 4 these subgroups induce a cohomology decomposition of $H^2(M, \mathbb{R})$. This is a specifically 4-dimensional result, as it follows from a recent work of Fino and Tomassini. Some estimates for the dimensions of these …
Four-dimensional, oriented Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ which satisfy the tame-compatible question of Donaldson for all almost complex structures $J$ on $\mathfrak{g}$ are completely described. As a consequence, examples are given of (non-unimodular) four-dimensional Lie algebras with almost complex structures which are tamed but not compatible with symplectic forms.
We prove that a compact Riemann surface can be realized as a pseudo-holomorphic curve of $(\mathbb{R}^4,J)$, for some almost complex structure $J$ if and only if it is an elliptic curve. Furthermore we show that any (almost) complex $2n$-torus can be holomorphically embedded in $(\mathbb{R}^{4n},J)$ for a suitable almost complex structure $J$. This allows us to embed any compact Riemann surface in some almost complex Euclidean space and to show many explicit examples of almost complex structure in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ which can not be tamed by any symplectic form.
This is the second of a series of papers where we study the plurigenera, the Kodaira dimension and the Iitaka dimension on compact almost complex manifolds. By using the pseudoholomorphic pluricanonical map, we define the second version of Kodaira dimension as well as Iitaka dimension on compact almost complex manifolds. We show the almost complex structures with the top Kodaira dimension are integrable. For compact almost complex 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension one, we obtain elliptic fibration like structural description. Some vanishing theorems in complex geometry are generalized to the …
In order to look for a well-behaved counterpart to Dolbeault cohomology in D-complex geometry, we study the de Rham cohomology of an almost D-complex manifold and its subgroups made up of the classes admitting invariant, respectively anti-invariant, representatives with respect to the almost D-complex structure, miming the theory introduced by T.-J. Li and W. Zhang in [T.-J. Li, W. Zhang, Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom. 17 (2009), no. 4, 651-684] for almost complex manifolds. In particular, we prove tha…
