The origins of irregular satellites of the giant planets are an important piece of the giant "puzzle" that is the theory of Solar System formation. It is well established that they are not "in situ" formation objects, around the planet, as are believed to be the regular ones. Then, the most plausible hypothesis to explain their origins is that they formed elsewhere and were captured by the planet. However, captures under restricted three-body problem dynamics have temporary feature, which makes necessary the action of an auxiliary capture mechanism. Nevertheless, there not exist one well established capture mechanism. In this work, we tried to understand which aspects of a binary-asteroid capture mechanism could favor the permanent capture of one member of a binary asteroid. We performed more than eight thousand numerical simulations of capture trajectories considering the four-body dynamical system Sun, Jupiter, Binary-asteroid. We restricted the problem to the circular planar prograde case, and time of integration to 10^4 years. With respect to the binary features, we noted that 1) tighter binaries are much more susceptible to produce permanent captures than the large separation-ones. We also found that 2) the permanent capture probability of the minor member of the binary is much more expressive than the major body permanent capture probability. On the other hand, among the aspects of capture-disruption process, 4) a pseudo eastern-quadrature was noted to be a very likely capture angular configuration at the instant of binary disruptions. In addition, we also found that the 5) capture probability is higher for binary asteroids which disrupt in an inferior-conjunction with Jupiter. These results show that the Sun plays a very important role on the capture dynamic of binary asteroids.
The paper analyses possible transfers of bodies from the main asteroid belt (MBA) to the Centaur region. The orbits of asteroids in the 2:1 mean motion resonance (MMR) with Jupiter are analysed. We selected the asteroids that are in resonant orbits with e > 0.3 whose absolute magnitudes H do not exceed 16m. The total number of the orbits amounts to 152. Numerical calculations were performed to evaluate the evolution of the orbits over 100,000-year time interval with projects for the future. Six bodies are found to have moved from the 2:1 commensurability zone to the Centaur population. The tra…
Recent dynamical analyses suggest that some Jupiter family comets (JFCs) may originate in the main asteroid belt instead of the outer solar system. This possibility is particularly interesting given evidence that icy main-belt objects are known to be present in the Themis asteroid family. We report results from dynamical analyses specifically investigating the possibility that icy Themis family members could contribute to the observed population of JFCs. Numerical integrations show that such dynamical evolution is indeed possible via a combination of eccentricity excitation apparently driven b…
The Jupiter Trojan asteroid 128383 (2004 JW52) was recently reported to have optical colors that are incongruous with its dynamical class. New and archival observations show that this is not the case. This is a reminder that we must always rule out the possibility that the Point Spread Function (PSF) of a minor planet is blended with that of a background sidereal source in survey images before its colors in the associated survey catalog can be considered reliable.
With the growing numbers of asteroids being discovered, identifying an observationally complete sample is essential for statistical analyses and for informing theoretical models of the dynamical evolution of the solar system. We present an easily implemented method of estimating the empirical observational completeness in absolute magnitude, H_lim, as a function of semi-major axis. Our method requires fewer assumptions and decisions to be made in its application, making results more transportable and reproducible amongst studies that implement it, as well as scalable to much larger datasets of…

We demonstrate dynamical pathways from main-belt asteroid and Centaur orbits to those in co-orbital motion with Jupiter, including the retrograde (inclination $i>90^o$) state. We estimate that at any given time, there should be $\sim1$ kilometer-scale or larger escaped asteroid in a transient direct (prograde) orbit with semimajor axis near that of Jupiter's ($a\simeq a_J$), with proportionally more smaller objects as determined by their size distribution. Most of these objects would be in the horseshoe dynamical state, which are hard to detect due to their moderate eccentricities (spending mo…
The asteroid belt is characterized by an extreme low total mass of material on dynamically excited orbits. The Nice Model explains many peculiar qualities of the solar system, including the belt's excited state, by invoking an orbital instability between the outer planets. However, previous studies of the Nice Model's effect on the belt's structure struggle to reproduce the innermost asteroids' orbital inclination distribution. Here, we show how the final phase of giant planet migration sculpts the asteroid belt, in particular its inclination distribution. As interactions with leftover planete…
Jupiter has nearly 8000~known co-orbital asteroids orbiting in the L4 and L5 Lagrange points called Jupiter Trojan asteroids. Aside from the greater number density of the L4 cloud the two clouds are in many ways considered to be identical. Using sparse photometric data taken by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) for 863 L4 Trojans and 380 L5 Trojans we derive the shape distribution for each of the clouds and find that, on average, the L4 asteroids are more elongated than the L5 asteroids. This shape difference is most likely due to the greater collision rate in the L4 cl…
Two distinct thermal evolutionary pathways of irregular shaped small planetesimals in the early solar system have been studied. We have taken a case study of two S-type asteroids; (243) Ida and (951) Gaspra, on the basis of their precise physical dimensions accessed by the Philip Stooke small body 3-D shape models of the NASA Planetary Data System. The 3- D shape models for the two asteroids are based on the Galileo spacecraft fly-by mission. Based on our novel thermal evolutionary code for the precise shape of the asteroids we found that the small planetary bodies that accreted within the ini…
Aims. We investigate the influence of the Yarkovsky force on the long-term orbital evolution of Jupiter Trojan asteroids. Methods. Clones of the observed population with different sizes and different thermal properties were numerically integrated for 1 Gyr with and without the Yarkovsky effect. The escape rate of these objects from the Trojan region as well as changes in the libration amplitude, eccentricity, and inclination were used as a metric of the strength of the Yarkovsky effect on the Trojan orbits. Results. Objects with radii $R\leq$1 km are significantly influenced by the Yarkovsky f…
Jupiter Trojan asteroids are located around L4 and L5 Lagrangian points on relatively stable orbits, in 1:1 MMR with Jupiter. However, not all of them lie in orbits that remain stable over the age of the Solar System. Unstable zones allow some Trojans to escape in time scales shorter than the Solar System age. This may contribute to populate other small body populations. In this paper, we study this process by performing long-term numerical simulations of the observed Trojans, focusing on the trajectories of those that leave the resonance. The orbits of current Trojans are taken as initial con…
We report observations of the Jupiter Trojan asteroid (3548) Eurybates and its satellite Queta with the Hubble Space Telescope and use these observations to perform an orbital fit to the system. Queta orbits Eurybates with a semimajor axis of $2350\pm11$ km at a period of $82.46\pm0.06$ days and an eccentricity of $0.125\pm0.009$. From this orbit we derive a mass of Eurybates of $1.51\pm0.03 \times 10^{17}$ kg, corresponding to an estimated density of $1.1\pm0.3$ g cm$^{-3}$, broadly consistent with densities measured for other Trojans, C-type asteroids in the outer main asteroid belt, and sma…
We present an analysis of survey observations of the trailing L5 Jupiter Trojan swarm using the wide-field Hyper Suprime-Cam CCD camera on the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope. We detected 189 L5 Trojans from our survey that covered about 15 deg^2 of sky with a detection limit of m_r = 24.1 mag, and selected an unbiased sample consisting of 87 objects with absolute magnitude 14 < H_r < 17 corresponding to diameter 2 km < D < 10 km for analysis of size distribution. We fit their differential magnitude distribution to a single-slope power-law with an index α= 0.37 +- 0.01, which corresponds to a cumulativ…
We introduce a new method for analyzing sparse photometric data of asteroids and apply it to Zwicky Transient Facility observations of the Jupiter Trojan asteroids. The method relies on the creation of a likelihood model that includes the probability distribution of rotational brightness variations at an unknown rotation phase. The likelihood model is analyzed via a Markov Chain Monte Carlo to quantify the uncertainty in our parameter estimates. Using this method, we provide color, phase parameter, absolute magnitude and amplitude of rotation measurements for 1049 Jupiter Trojans. We find that…
The Jupiter Trojans are a large group of asteroids that are co-orbiting with Jupiter near its L4 and L5 Lagrange points. The study of Jupiter Trojans is crucial for testing different models of planet formation that are directly related to our understanding of solar system evolution. In this work, we select known Jupiter Trojans listed by the Minor Planet Center (MPC) from the full six years dataset (Y6) of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) to analyze their photometric properties. The DES data allow us to study Jupiter Trojans with a fainter magnitude limit than previous studies in a homogeneous sur…
As the identified number of Jupiter's moons has skyrocketed to 79, some of them have been regrouped. In this work, we continue to identify the potential distributions of the physical characteristics of Jupiter's irregular moons. By using nonparametric Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, we verified more than 20 commonly used distributions and found that surprisingly, almost all the physical characteristics (i.e., the equatorial radius, equatorial circumference, circumference, volume, mass, surface gravity and escape velocity) of the moons in the Ananke and Carme groups follow log-logistic distributions.…
On the Stability of the Satellites of Asteroid 87 Sylvia
