We present a numerical code for calculating the local gravitational self-force acting on a pointlike particle in a generic (bound) geodesic orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole. The calculation is carried out in the Lorenz gauge: For a given geodesic orbit, we decompose the Lorenz-gauge metric perturbation equations (sourced by the delta-function particle) into tensorial harmonics, and solve for each harmonic using numerical evolution in the time domain (in 1+1 dimensions). The physical self-force along the orbit is then obtained via mode-sum regularization. The total self-force contains a dissipative piece as well as a conservative piece, and we describe a simple method for disentangling these two pieces in a time-domain framework. The dissipative component is responsible for the loss of orbital energy and angular momentum through gravitational radiation; as a test of our code we demonstrate that the work done by the dissipative component of the computed force is precisely balanced by the asymptotic fluxes of energy and angular momentum, which we extract independently from the wave-zone numerical solutions. The conservative piece of the self force does not affect the time-averaged rate of energy and angular-momentum loss, but it influences the evolution of the orbital phases; this piece is calculated here for the first time in eccentric strong-field orbits. As a first concrete application of our code we recently reported the value of the shift in the location and frequency of the innermost stable circular orbit due to the conservative self-force [Phys. Rev. Lett.\ {\bf 102}, 191101 (2009)]. Here we provide full details of this analysis, and discuss future applications.
We study tidal effects induced by a particle moving along a slightly eccentric equatorial orbits in a Schwarzschild spacetime within the gravitational self-force framework. We compute the first order (conservative) corrections in the mass-ratio to the eigenvalues of the electric-type and magnetic-type tidal tensors up to the second order in eccentricity and through the 9.5 post-Newtonian order. Previous results on circular orbits are thus generalized and recovered in a proper limit.

Analytic self-force calculations in the post-Newtonian regime: eccentric orbits on a Schwarzschild background

We present an extension of work in an earlier paper showing high precision comparisons between black hole perturbation theory and post-Newtonian (PN) theory in their region of overlapping validity for bound, eccentric-orbit, Schwarzschild extreme-mass-ratio inspirals. As before we apply a numerical fitting scheme to extract eccentricity coefficients in the PN expansion of the gravitational wave fluxes, which are then converted to exact analytic form using an integer-relation algorithm. In this work, however, we fit to individual $lmn$ modes to exploit simplifying factorizations that lie therei…
We present an analytic and fully relativistic framework for studying the self-intersection of tidal disruption event (TDE) streams, restricting ourselves to the Schwarzschild spacetime. By taking advantage of the closed-form solution to the geodesic equations in the Schwarzschild metric, we calculate properties of the self-intersection without numerically evaluating the geodesic equations or making any post-Newtonian approximations. Our analytic treatment also facilitates geometric definitions of the orbital semi-major axis and eccentricity, as opposed to Newtonian formulas which lead to unphy…
We study the orbital evolution of eccentric binary neutron stars. The orbit is described as a Quasi-Keplarian orbit with perturbations due to tidal couplings. We find that the tidal interaction between stars contributes to orbital precession, in addition to the Post-Newtonian procession. The coupling between the angular and radial motion of the binary also excites a series of harmonics in the stars' oscillation. In the small eccentricity limit, this coupling mainly gives rise to an additional orbital resonance, with the orbital frequency being one third of the f-mode frequency. For a binary wi…
We present new numerical-relativity simulations of eccentric merging black holes with initially antiparallel spins lying in the orbital plane (the so-called \emph{superkick} configuration). Binary eccentricity boosts the recoil of the merger remnant by up to $25\%$. The increase in the energy flux is much more modest, and therefore this kick enhancement is mainly due to asymmetry in the binary dynamics. Our findings might have important consequences for the retention of stellar-mass black holes in star clusters and supermassive black holes in galactic hosts.
Metric perturbations from eccentric orbits on a Schwarzschild black hole: I. Odd-parity Regge-Wheeler to Lorenz gauge transformation and two new methods to circumvent the Gibbs phenomenon
We study precession dynamics of generic binary black holes in eccentric orbits using an effective potential based formalism derived in [M. Kesden et al., PRL {\bf 114}, 081103 (2015)]. This effective potential is used to classify binary black holes into three mutually exclusive spin morphologies. During the inspiral phase, binaries make transitions from one morphology to others. We evolve a population of binary black holes from an initial separation of $1000\mathbf{M}$ to a final separation of $10\mathbf{M}$ using post-Newtonian accurate evolution equations. We find that, given suitable initia…
We study the bound orbit conditions for equatorial and eccentric orbits around a Kerr black hole both in the parameter space ($E$, $L$, $a$) representing the energy, angular momentum of the test particle, and spin of the black hole, and also ($e$, $μ$, $a$) space representing the eccentricity, inverse-latus rectum of the orbit, and spin. We apply these conditions and implement the relativistic precession (RP) model to M82X-1, which is an Intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) system, where two high-frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (HFQPOs) and a low-frequency QPO were simultaneously observed…
Gravitational perturbations and metric reconstruction: Method of extended homogeneous solutions applied to eccentric orbits on a Schwarzschild black hole
We provide a prescription to solve the metric completion problem in gravitational self-force calculations on a Kerr spacetime by fixing the remaining gauge freedom. We discuss the explicit example of eccentric equatorial orbits, recovering all limiting cases already studied in the literature of eccentric orbits in Schwarzschild as well as circular orbits in both Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes.
We analytically compute the gravitational self-force correction to the gyroscope precession along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits in the Kerr spacetime, generalizing previous results for the Schwarzschild spacetime. Our results are accurate through the 9.5 post-Newtonian order and to second order in both eccentricity and rotation parameter. We also provide a post-Newtonian check of our results based on the currently known Hamiltonian for spinning binaries.

We study the rates of tidal disruption of stars by intermediate-mass to supermassive black holes on bound to unbound orbits by using high-accuracy direct N-body experiments. The approaching stars from the star cluster to the black hole can take three types of orbit: eccentric, parabolic, and hyperbolic orbits. Since the mass fallback rate shows a different variability depending on these orbital types, we can classify tidal disruption events (TDEs) into three main categories: eccentric, parabolic, and hyperbolic TDEs. Respective TDEs are characterized by two critical values of the orbital eccen…
The (first-order) gravitational self-force correction to the spin-orbit precession of a spinning compact body along a slightly eccentric orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole is computed through the ninth post-Newtonian order, improving recent results by Kavanagh et al. [Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 96}, 064012 (2017).] This information is then converted into its corresponding Effective-One-Body counterpart, thereby determining several new post-Newtonian terms in the gyrogravitomagnetic ratio $g_{S*}$.
High-order post-Newtonian expansion of the generalized redshift invariant for eccentric-orbit, equatorial extreme-mass-ratio inspirals with a spinning primary
The Detweiler-Barack-Sago redshift function for particles moving along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole is currently known up to the second order in eccentricity, second order in spin parameter, and the 8.5 post-Newtonian order. We improve the analytical computation of such a gauge-invariant quantity by including terms up to the fourth order in eccentricity at the same post-Newtonian approximation level. We also check that our results agrees with the corresponding post-Newtonian expectation of the same quantity, calculated by using the currently known Hamiltonian f…
We derive analytic expressions that provide Fourier domain gravitational wave (GW) response function for compact binaries inspiraling along moderately eccentric orbits. These expressions include amplitude corrections to the two GW polarization states that are accurate to the first post-Newtonian (PN) order. Additionally, our fully 3PN accurate GW phase evolution incorporates eccentricity effects up to sixth order at each PN order. Further, we develop a prescription to incorporate analytically the effects of 3PN accurate periastron advance in the GW phase evolution. This is how we provide a rea…
We compute the tail contributions to the gravitational-wave mode amplitudes for compact binaries in eccentric orbits at the third post-Newtonian order of general relativity. We combine them with the already available instantaneous pieces and include the post-adiabatic corrections required to fully account for the effects of radiation-reaction forces on the motion. We compare the resulting waveform in the small eccentricity limit to the circular one, finding perfect agreement.
In this paper, we have examined the geodesic structure of the spacetime surrounding Schwarzschild black holes in the presence of a quintessence field parameter $q$ and string cloud parameter $a$. Because of the quintessence field, there are two horizon structures and coordinate time $t$ shows some fascinating variations due to the parameters. We do a thorough investigation of the existence of critical orbits for various parameter values.
