We provide a derivation of the Foppl-von Karman equations for the shape of and stresses in an elastic plate with residual strains. These might arise from a range of causes: inhomogeneous growth, plastic deformation, swelling or shrinkage driven by solvent absorption. Our analysis gives rigorous bounds on the convergence of the three dimensional equations of elasticity to the low-dimensional description embodied in the plate-like description of laminae and thus justifies a recent formulation of the problem to the shape of growing leaves. It also formalizes a procedure that can be used to derive other low-dimensional descriptions of active materials.
We study well-posedness and asymptotic dynamics of a coupled system consisting of linearized 3D Navier--Stokes equations in a bounded domain and a classical (nonlinear) full von Karman shallow shell equations that accounts for both transversal and lateral displacements on a flexible part of the boundary. We also take into account rotational inertia of filaments of the shell. Out main result shows that the problem generates a semiflow in an appropriate phase space. The regularity provided by viscous dissipation in the fluid allows us to consider simultaneously both cases of presence inertia in …
We study the natural non-flat version of the so-called "constrained von Karman" theory for thin nonlinearly elastic films. We prove that every (admissible) radially symmetric out-of-plane displacement on the unit disk is a stationary point. This allows us to construct data leading to constrained von Karman functionals which have infinitely many stationary points.
We prove convergence of critical points $u^h$ of the nonlinear elastic energies $E^h$ of thin incompressible plates $Ω^h=Ω\times (-h/2, h/2)$, which satisfy the von Kármán scaling: $E^h(u^h)\leq Ch^4$, to critical points of the appropriate limiting (incompressible von Kármán) functional.
By means of a variational approach we rigorously deduce three one-dimensional models for elastic ribbons from the theory of von Kármán plates, passing to the limit as the width of the plate goes to zero. The one-dimensional model found starting from the "linearized" von Kármán energy corresponds to that of a linearly elastic beam that can twist but can deform in just one plane; while the model found from the von Kármán energy is a non-linear model that comprises stretching, bendings, and twisting. The "constrained" von Kármán energy, instead, leads to a new Sadowsky type of model.
Starting from 3D elasticity equations we derive the model of the homogenized von Kármán plate by means of $Γ$-convergence. This generalizes the recent results, where the material oscillations were assumed to be periodic.
In this paper we study the effects of simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction in the context of convergence of stationary points for thin nonhomogeneous rods under the assumption of the von Kármán scaling. Assuming stationarity condition for a sequence of deformations close to a rigid body motion, we prove that the corresponding sequences of scaled displacements and twist functions converge to a limit point, which is the stationary point of the homogenized von Kármán rod model. The analogous result holds true for the von Kármán plate model.
We derive von-Kármán plate theory from three dimensional, purely atomistic models with classical particle interaction. This derivation is established as a $Γ$-limit when considering the limit where the interatomic distance $\varepsilon$ as well as the thickness of the plate $h$ tend to zero. In particular, our analysis includes the ultrathin case where $\varepsilon \sim h$, leading to a new von-Kármán plate theory for finitely many layers.
We study the asymptotic behaviour, in the sense of $Γ$-convergence, of a thin incompressible magnetoelastic plate, as its thickness goes to zero. We focus on the linearized von Kármán regime. The model features a mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation, as magnetizations are defined on the deformed confguration.
The asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of three-dimensional nonlinear elastodynamics in a thin plate is studied, as the thickness $h$ of the plate tends to zero. Under appropriate scalings of the applied force and of the initial values in terms of $h$, it is shown that three-dimensional solutions of the nonlinear elastodynamic equation converge to solutions of the time-dependent von Kármán plate equation.
We apply a quasistatic nonlinear model for nonsimple viscoelastic materials at a finite-strain setting in the Kelvin's-Voigt's rheology to derive a viscoelastic plate model of von Kármán type. We start from time-discrete solutions to a model of three-dimensional viscoelasticity where the viscosity stress tensor complies with the principle of time-continuous frame-indifference. Combining the derivation of nonlinear plate theory by Friesecke, James and Müller, and the abstract theory of gradient flows in metric spaces by Sandier and Serfaty we perform a dimension-reduction from 3D to 2D and iden…
A rectangular plate modeling the deck of a suspension bridge is considered. The plate may widely oscillate, which suggests to consider models from nonlinear elasticity. The von Kármán plate model is studied, complemented with the action of the hangers and with suitable boundary conditions describing the behavior of the deck. The oscillating modes are determined in full detail. Existence and multiplicity of static equilibria are then obtained under different assumptions on the strength of the buckling load.
The asymptotic behaviour of solutions of three-dimensional nonlinear elastodynamics in a thin shell is considered, as the thickness $h$ of the shell tends to zero. Given the appropriate scalings of the applied force and of the initial data in terms of $h,$ it's verified that three-dimensional solutions of the nonlinear elastodynamic equations converge to solutions of the time-dependent von Kármán equations or dynamic linear equations for shell of arbitrary geometry.
In this paper dynamic von Karman equations with localized interior damping supported in a boundary collar are considered. Hadamard well-posedness for von Karman plates with various types of nonlinear damping are well-known, and the long-time behavior of nonlinear plates has been a topic of recent interest. Since the von Karman plate system is of "hyperbolic type" with critical nonlinearity (noncompact with respect to the phase space), this latter topic is particularly challenging in the case of geometrically constrained and nonlinear damping. In this paper we first show the existence of a comp…
We consider metric gradient flows and their discretizations in time and space. We prove an abstract convergence result for time-space discretizations and identify their limits as curves of maximal slope. As an application, we consider a finite element approximation of a quasistatic evolution for viscoelastic von Kármán plates. Computational experiments are provided, too.
We derive the model of homogenized von Kármán shell theory, starting from three dimensional nonlinear elasticity. The original three dimensional model contains two small parameters: the oscillations of the material $\e$ and the thickness of the shell $h$. Depending on the asymptotic ratio of these two parameters, we obtain different asymptotic theories. In the case $h\ll\e$ we identify two different asymptotic theories, depending on the ratio of $h$ and $\e^2$. In the case of convex shells we obtain a complete picture in the whole regime $h\ll\e$.
We consider a two-dimensional model of viscoelastic von Kármán plates in the Kelvin's-Voigt's rheology derived from a three-dimensional model at a finite-strain setting. As the width of the plate goes to zero, we perform a dimension-reduction from 2D to 1D and identify an effective one-dimensional model for a viscoelastic ribbon comprising stretching, bending, and twisting both in the elastic and the viscous stress. Our arguments rely on the abstract theory of gradient flows in metric spaces by Sandier and Serfaty and complement the $Γ$-convergence analysis of elastic von Kármán ribbons in [Fr…
In this paper we derive, by means of $Γ$-convergence, the periodically wrinkled plate model starting from three dimensional nonlinear elasticity. We assume that the thickness of the plate is $h^2$ and that the mid-surface of the plate is given by $(x_1,x_2) \to (x_1,x_2,h^2θ(\per))$, where $θ$ is $[0,1]^2$ periodic function. We also assume that the strain energy of the plate has the order $h^8=(h^2)^4$, which corresponds to the Föppl-von Kármán model in the case of the ordinary plate. The obtained model mixes the bending part of the energy with the stretching part.
This paper is devoted to a long time behavior analysis associated with flow structure interactions at subsonic and supersonic velocities. It turns out that an ntrinsic component of that analysis is the study of attracting sets corresponding to von Karman plate equations with {\it delayed terms} and {\it without rotational} terms. The presence of delay terms in the dynamical system leads to the loss of gradient structure while the absence of rotational terms in von Karman plates leads to the loss of compactness of the orbits. Both these features make the analysis of long time behavior rather su…
The large deflection of a circular thin plate under uniform external pressure is a classic problem in solid mechanics, dated back to Von K{á}rm{á}n \cite{Karman}. {This problem is reconsidered in this paper using an analytic approximation method, namely the homotopy analysis method (HAM).} Convergent series solutions are obtained for four types of boundary conditions with rather high nonlinearity, even in the case of $w(0)/h>20$, where $w(0)/h$ denotes the ratio of central deflection to plate thickness. Especially, we prove that the previous perturbation methods for an arbitrary perturbation q…
We investigate energetically optimal configurations of thin structures with a pre-strain. Depending on the strength of the pre-strain we consider a whole hierarchy of effective plate theories with a spontaneous curvature term, ranging from linearised Kirchhoff to von Kármán to linearised von Kármán theories. While explicit formulae are available in the linearised regimes, the von Kármán theory turns out to be critical and a phase transition from cylindrical (as in linearised Kirchhoff) to spherical (as in von linearised Kármán) configurations is observed there. We analyse this behavior with th…
This paper aims to provide a robust model for the well-known phenomenon of Kármán Vortex Street arising in Fluid Mechanics. The first theoretical attempt to model this pattern was given by von Kármán [22, 23]. He considered two parallel staggered rows of point vortices, with opposite strength, that translate at the same speed. Following the ideas of Saffman and Schatzman [36], we propose to study this phenomenon in the Euler equations by considering two infinite arrows of vortex patches. The key idea is to desingularize the point vortex model proposed by von Kármán. Our construction is flexibl…
We give a survey of recent results on flow-structure interactions modeled by a modified wave equation coupled at an interface with equations of nonlinear elasticity. Both subsonic and supersonic flow velocities are considered. The focus of the discussion here is on the interesting mathematical aspects of physical phenomena occurring in aeroelasticity, such as flutter and divergence. This leads to a partial differential equation (PDE) treatment of issues such as well-posedness of finite energy solutions, and long-time (asymptotic) behavior. The latter includes theory of asymptotic stability, co…
In this paper, the homotopy analysis method (HAM) is successfully applied to solve the Von Karman's plate equations in the integral form for a circular plate with the clamped boundary under an arbitrary uniform external pressure. Two HAM-based approaches are proposed. One is for a given external load Q, the other for a given central deflection. Both of them are valid for an arbitrary uniform external pressure by means of choosing a proper value of the so-called convergence-control parameters c_1 and c_2 in the frame of the HAM. Besides, it is found that iteration can greatly accelerate the con…
We address the long-time behavior of a non-rotational von Karman plate in an inviscid potential flow. The model arises in aeroelasticity and models the interaction between a thin, nonlinear panel and a flow of gas in which it is immersed [6, 21, 23]. Recent results in [16, 18] show that the plate component of the dynamics (in the presence of a physical plate nonlinearity) converge to a global compact attracting set of finite dimension; these results were obtained in the absence of mechanical damping of any type. Here we show that, by incorporating mechanical damping the full flow-plate system,…
The elimination of aeroelastic instability (resulting in sustained oscillations of bridges, buildings, airfoils) is a central engineering and design issue. Mathematically, this translates to strong asymptotic stabilization of a 3D flow by a 2D elastic structure. The stabilization (convergence to the stationary set) of a aerodynamic wave-plate model is established here. A 3D potential flow on the half-space has a spatially-bounded von Karman plate embedded in the boundary. The physical model, then, is a Neumann wave equation with low regularity of coupling conditions. Motivated on empirical obs…
We present and summarize the results of recent studies on non-Euclidean plates with imposed constant negative Gaussian curvature in both the Föppl - von Kármán and Kirchhoff approximations. Motivated by experimental results we focus on annuli with a periodic profile. We show that in the Föppl - von Kármán approximation there are only two types of global minimizers -- flat and saddle shaped deformations with localized regions of stretching near the boundary of the annulus. We also show that there exists local minimizers with $n$-waves that have regions of stretching near their lines of inflecti…
The subject of this paper is the rigorous derivation of reduced models for a thin plate by means of Γ-convergence, in the framework of finite plasticity. Denoting by ε the thickness of the plate, we analyse the case where the scaling factor of the elasto-plastic energy is of order ε^(2α-2), with α>=3. According to the value of α, partially or fully linearized models are deduced, which correspond, in the absence of plastic deformation, to the Von Karman plate theory and the linearized plate theory.
We construct strong solutions for a nonlinear wave equation for a thin vibrating plate described by nonlinear elastodynamics. For sufficiently small thickness we obtain existence of strong solutions for large times under appropriate scaling of the initial values such that the limit system as $h\to 0$ is either the nonlinear von Kármán plate equation or the linear fourth order Germain-Lagrange equation. In the case of the linear Germain-Lagrange equation we even obtain a convergence rate of the three-dimensional solution to the solution of the two-dimensional linear plate equation.
The paper is dedicated to the investigation of simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction of textile structures as elasticity problem with an energy in the von-K{á}rm{á}n-regime. An extension for deformations is presented allowing to use the decomposition of plate-displacements. The limit problem in terms of displacements is derived with the help of the unfolding operator and yields in the limit the von-K{á}rm{á}n plate with linear elastic cell-problems. It is shown, that for homogeneous isotropic beams in the structure, the resulting plate is orthotropic. As application of the obtain…
