We have characterized the dynamics of the polar nanoregions in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) through high-resolution neutron backscattering and spin-echo measurements of the diffuse scattering cross section. We find that the diffuse scattering intensity consists of \emph{both} static and dynamic components. The static component first appears at the Curie temperature $Θ\sim 400$ K, while the dynamic component freezes completely at the temperature T$_{f} \sim 200$ K; together, these components account for all of the observed spectral weight contributing to the diffuse scattering cross section. The integrated intensity of the dynamic component peaks near the temperature at which the frequency-dependent dielectric constant reaches a maximum (T$_{max}$) when measured at 1 GHz, i. e. on a timescale of $\sim 1$ ns. Our neutron scattering results can thus be directly related to dielectric and infra-red measurements of the polar nanoregions. Finally, the global temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering can be understood in terms of just two temperature scales, which is consistent with random field models.
Relaxor ferroelectrics are applied in electronic devices such as actuators and sonars. Morphotrophic phase boundaries (MPBs) with monoclinic structures are known for their high piezoelectricity and electromechanical coupling factors in solid solutions of PbTiO$_{3}$ and relaxor ferroelectrics (Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$, Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ or Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$, Nb$_{1/3}$)O$_{3}$). However, the monoclinic structures related to polar nanosize domains (polar nanoregions) exhibiting the relaxor properties of dielectric dispersion have not been reported. Using transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron x-ray…
The polarization and strain response of ferroelectric materials at fields below the macroscopic coercive field is of a paramount importance for the operation of many electronic devices. The response of real ferroelectric and related materials is in general complex and difficult to interpret. The reason for this is that many processes in a ferroelectric material contribute to its properties, often concurrently. Examples include motion of ferroelectric and ferroelastic domains, presence of domains within domains, dynamics of different types of polar nano-entities, interaction of polar nano-entit…
The existence of polar nanoregions is the most important characteristic of ferroelectric relaxors, however, the size determination and dynamic of PNRs remains uncertain. We reveal a re-entrant relaxor behavior and ferroelectric-paraelectric transition coexists in complex perovskite oxide 0.6Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3-0.4PbTiO3. Two dielectric anomalies (i) the low-temperature re-entrant relaxor transition and (ii) the high-temperature diffuse phase transition (DPT) were described by the phenomenological statistical model. The sizes of the two kinds of polar nanoregions (PNRs) corresponding to two ferroe…
Macroscopic polarity and its dynamic response to external electric fields and temperature in the nominally ergodic relaxor phase of pristine lead magnesium niobate crystals and ceramics, Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN), were investigated. Dynamic pyroelectric measurements provide evidence for persistent macroscopic polarity of the samples. Annealing experiments below and above Burns temperature of polarized samples relate this polarity to the presence of polar nano entities and their dynamics. The dc electric field strength required for macroscopic polarization reversal is similar to the amplitude of t…
Short-range polar orders in the relaxor ferroelectric material PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_3$-$28\%$PbTiO$_3$ (PMN-28PT) have been studied using neutron diffuse scattering. An external electric field along [110] direction can affect the diffuse scattering in the low temperature rhombohedral/monoclinic phase. Diffuse scattering intensities associated with [110] short-range polarizations are partially suppressed, while those arising from [1$\bar{1}$0] polarizations are enhanced. On the other hand, short-range polar orders along other equivalent $\langle110\rangle$ directions, i.e. [101],[10$\bar{1}…
We have measured the bending-induced polarization of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 single crystals with compositions at the relaxor-ferroelectric phase boundary. The crystals display very large flexoelectricity, with flexocoupling coefficients an order of magnitude bigger than the theoretical upper limit set by the theories of Kogan and Tagantsev. This enhancement persists in the paraphrase up to a temperature T* that coincides with the start of elastic softening in the crystals. Analysis of the temperature dependence and cross-correlation between flexoelectric, dielectric and elastic properties ind…
Neutron and x-ray scattering studies on relaxor ferroelectric systems Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PZN), Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PMN), and their solid solutions with PbTiO$_3$ (PT) have shown that inhomogeneities and disorder play important roles in the materials properties. Although a long-range polar order can be established at low temperature - sometimes with the help of an external electric field; short-range local structures called the ``polar nano-regions'' (PNR) still persist. Both the bulk structure and the PNR have been studied in details. The coexistence and competition of l…
Relaxor ferroelectrics have been a focus of intense attention due to their anomalous dielectric characteristics, diffuse phase transitions, and strong piezoelectricity. Understanding the structure and dynamics of relaxors has been one of the long-standing challenges in solid-state physics, with the current model of polar nanoregions in a non-polar matrix providing only a qualitative description of the relaxor phase transitions. In this paper, we investigate the local structure and dynamics in 75%PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_3$-25%PbTiO$_3$ (PMN-PT) using molecular dynamics simulations and the dyna…
Detailed Raman spectroscopy studies on polycrystalline Sr1-xPrxTiO3 (x=0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.09, 0.13, 0.15, 0.17) samples are reported elucidating the microscopic mechanism of relaxor ferroelectrics. The polar mode was observed upto very high temperature ~1000 K suggesting that the dipoles exists at temperatures well above the characteristic relaxor temperatures and they develop a short range correlation at 505 K leading to formation of PNRs. The TO2 polar mode showed anomalous softening in cooling below T~505 K supporting the growth of PNRs. Fano resonance is reported in the Pr doped c…
It has been considered that polar nanoregions in relaxors form at Burns temperature Td approx 600 K. High-temperature dielectric investigations of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) and 0.7PMN-0.3PbTiO3 reveal, however, that the dielectric dispersion around 600 K appears due to the surface-layer contributions. The intrinsic response, analyzed in terms of the universal scaling, imply much higher Td or formation of polar nanoregions in a broad temperature range, while high dielectric constants manifest that polar order exists already at the highest measured temperatures of 800 K. The obtained critical expon…
We report neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystal PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ doped with 32\% PbTiO$_{3}$, a relaxor ferroelectric that lies close to the morphotropic phase boundary. When cooled under an electric field $\mathbf{E} \parallel$ [001] into tetragonal and monoclinic phases, the scattering cross section from transverse acoustic (TA) phonons polarized parallel to $\mathbf{E}$ weakens and shifts to higher energy relative to that under zero-field-cooled conditions. Likewise, the scattering cross section from transverse optic (TO) phonons polarized parallel to $\mat…
The electrocaloric (EC) effect is calculated for Gd-substituted PMN (x = 0 to 0.1) relaxors from temperature dependent heat capacity and polarization measurements, using a thermodynamic Maxwell equation. Polarization change with temperature reveals an anomalous behaviour around the glass transition temperature, which is in the vicinity of a crossover from positive to negative EC effect, which is explained evoking the critical slowing-down of the polar nano-domains dynamics to super-dipolar glass state upon cooling. The maximum negative EC coefficient is observed to decrease from 0.4 K-mm/kV at…
The consideration of oxygen vacancies influence on the relaxors with perovskite structure was considered in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenological theory. The theory applicability for relaxors is based on the existence of some hidden soft phonon polar mode in them, and its frequency could be zero at some negative temperature TC*. Main attention was paid to PZN-PLZT relaxor described by formula 0.3Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.7(Pb0.96La0.04(ZrxTi1-x)0.99O3) with x = 0.52, where earlier experimental investigation of oxygen vacancies influence on the polar properties was performed and…

A first-principles-based technique is developed to investigate properties of Ba(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ relaxor ferroelectrics as a function of temperature. The use of this scheme provides answers to important, unresolved and/or controversial questions, such as: what do the different critical temperatures usually found in relaxors correspond to? Do polar nanoregions really exist in relaxors? If yes, do they only form inside chemically-ordered regions? Is it necessary that antiferroelectricity develops in order for the relaxor behavior to occur? Are random fields and random strains really the mechanisms re…
A new class of superparamagnetism was found in relaxor ferroelectric 2/3BiFeO$_{3}$-1/3BaTiO$_{3}$. The size of the magnetic particle, estimated from the superparamagnetic magnetization curve, coincides with the size of the polar nanoregion (PNR), which governs the relaxor ferroelectric property. This suggests that the magnetic domain is identical to the PNR. The temperature variations in the sizes of the magnetic domains and PNRs estimated by our neutron diffraction measurements support this picture. Since the same domain provides both electric and magnetic properties, strong coupling between…
It is well known that disordered relaxor ferroelectrics exhibit local polar correlations. The origin of localized fields that disrupt long range polar order for different substitution types, however, is unclear. Currently, it is known that substituents of the same valence as Ti4+ at the B-site of barium titanate lattice produce random disruption of Ti-O-Ti chains that induces relaxor behavior. On the other hand, investigating lattice disruption and relaxor behavior resulting from substituents of different valence at the B-site is more complex due to the simultaneous occurrence of charge imbala…

Polycrystalline samples of CuCrO2 were synthesized by solid state reaction method. Temperature dependent dielectric measurements, synchrotron x-ray diffraction (SXRD), pyroelectric current and Raman measurements have been performed on these samples. Evidences of the presence of relaxor type ferroelectricity, which otherwise have gone unnoticed in CuCrO2 system (a member of delafossite family) near room temperature, have been presented. Presence of broad maximum in dielectric permittivity and its frequency dispersion indicates relaxor-type ferroelectricity in CuCrO2 near room temperature. Caref…
The Persistence and Memory of Polar Nano-Regions in a Ferroelectric Relaxor Under an Electric Field
A novel lead-free tungsten bronze type ceramic Sr5BiTi3Nb7O30, was prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction route. The room-temperature crystal structure shows an average structure with centro-symmetric space group P4/mbm identified by synchrotron XRD. Temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity indicates that Sr5BiTi3Nb7O30 is a ferroelectric relaxor with Tm near 260 K. The ceramic displays stronger frequency dispersion and lower phase-transition temperature compared with Sr6Ti2Nb8O30. A macroscopic and phenomenological statistical model was employed to describe the temperature d…
In previous work, molecular dynamics simulations based on a first-principles-derived effective Hamiltonian for $Pb_{1-X}(Sc_{1/2}Nb_{1/2})O_{3-X}$~ (PSN), with nearest-neighbor Pb-O divacancy pairs, was used to calculate $X_{\rm [Pb-O]}$~vs.~T, phase diagrams for PSN with: ideal rock-salt type chemical order; nanoscale chemical short-range order; and random chemical disorder. Here, we show that the phase diagrams should include additional regions in which a glassy relaxor-phase (or state) is predicted. With respect to phase diagram topology, these results strongly support the analogy between r…
We report measurements of the neutron diffuse scattering in a single crystal of the relaxor ferroelectric material 95.5%Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$-4.5%PbTiO$_3$ (PZN-4.5%PT). Our results suggest that the nanometer scale structure in this compound exhibits both $<100>$ and $<110>$ polarizations, which contribute to different portions of the total diffuse scattering intensity. These contributions can be distinguished by the differing responses to an electric field applied along [001]. While diffuse scattering intensities associated with $<110>$ (T2-type) polarizations show little to no change…
We propose a simple and solvable mean-field model of the scattering of transverse optic modes by Polarized Nano Regions (PNR) in the paraelectric phase of relaxor ferroelectrics. The PNR is assumed to be a ferroelectric sphere embedded in the host isotropic medium. The Lagrangian parameters are taken to be the same inside and outside the PNR, with exception of the soft-mode gap temperature dependence. The interaction of the Transverse (TO) with the longitudinal (LO) optic modes is taken into account but the latter is found to be important only at the surface of the PNR. Elementary excitations …
We use neutron scattering to characterize the acoustic phonons in the relaxor PMN and demonstrate the presence of an anisotropic damping mechanism directly related to short-range, polar correlations. For a large range of temperatures above Tc ~ 210, K, where dynamic polar correlations exist, acoustic phonons propagating along [1\bar{1}0] and polarized along [110] (TA2 phonons) are overdamped and softened across most of the Brillouin zone. By contrast, acoustic phonons propagating along [100] and polarized along [001] (TA1 phonons) are overdamped and softened for only a limited range of wavevec…
CuCrS2, a Heisenberg antiferromagnet with layered edge sharing triangular lattice, exhibits a spiral magnetic order. Dielectric (E) and polarization studies show magnetoelectric (ME) coupling at Neel temperature (T_N=38 K) where simultaneous dielectric and magnetic long range order occur. The compound shows a diffused ferroelectric (FE) transition and slow relaxation dynamics above T_N, indicative of relaxor FE behavior. Interestingly, memory effect and magnetic field induced rejuvenation are also observed in E, establishing cooperative glassy dynamics and ME coupling even above T_N. We discus…
We discovered a near room temperature lead-free relaxor-ferroelectric (Ba0.6Bi0.2Li0.2)TiO3 (BBLT) having A-site compositional disordered ABO3 perovskite structure. Microstructure-property relations revealed that the chemical inhomogeneities and development of local polar nano regions (PNRs) are responsible for dielectric dispersion as a function of probe frequencies and temperatures. Rietveld analysis indicates mixed crystal structure with 80% tetragonal structure (space group P4mm) and 20% orthorhombic structure (space group Amm2) which is confirmed by the high resolution transmission electr…

We have studied ferroelectricity and photovoltaic effects in atomic layer deposited (ALD) 40-nm thick SnTiO$_{x}$ films deposited directly onto p-type (001)Si substrate. These films showed well-saturated, square and repeatable hysteresis loops with remnant polarization of 1.5 $μ$C/cm$^{2}$ at room temperature, as detected by out-of-plane polarization versus electric field (P-E) and field cycling measurements. A photo-induced enhancement in ferroelectricity was also observed as the spontaneous polarization increased under white-light illumination. The ferroelectricity exhibits relaxor character…
We compare chemical solution deposition (CSD), and pulsed-laser-deposition (PLD), specimens of the new room-temperature, single-phase, multiferroic magnetoelectric, [PbFe2/3W1/3O3]x[PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3]1-x (PZTFWx ~ 0.40<x<0.20) with polarization, loss (<1%), and resistivity (typically 108 ohm.cm) equal to or superior to BiFeO3. Single phase polycrystalline multiferroics PZTFWx thin films were fabricated on platinized silicon substrate by CSD and as epitaxial single-crystal films on MgO substrate by PLD. High dielectric constants (1200- 3000), high polarization (30 - 60 micro C/cm2), weak saturat…
Ferroelectric relaxors are complex materials with distinct properties. The understanding of their dielectric susceptibility, which strongly depends on both temperature and probing frequency, have interested researchers for many years. Here we report a macroscopic and phenomenological approach based on statistical modeling to investigate and better understand how the dielectric response of a relaxor depends on temperature. Employing the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution and considering temperature dependent dipolar orientational polarizability, we propose a minimum statistical model and specific e…
We study the free energy landscape of a minimal model for relaxor ferroelectrics. Using a variational method which includes leading correlations beyond the mean-field approximation as well as disorder averaging at the level of a simple replica theory, we find metastable paraelectric states with a stability region that extends to zero temperature. The free energy of such states exhibits an essential singularity for weak compositional disorder pointing to their necessary occurrence. Ferroelectric states appear as local minima in the free energy at high temperatures and become stable below a coex…
We analyze scattering of the transverse optic modes by spherically symmetric Polarized Nano Regions (PNR) in the paraelectric phase of relaxor ferroelectrics. Calculations have done in the frame of mean-field model early supposed by E.Iolin & J.Toulouse but depolarization field effects, DF, were taken into account. Elementary excitations of the system are found to be of two types - Vortex (V) and Quasi Polar (QP). DF decreases temperature of the local QP phase transition. The local phase transition temperature is found to be lower (higher) for Vortex than for QP excitations for the case of sma…
High-pressure and variable temperature single crystal synchrotron X-ray measurements combined with first-principles based molecular dynamics simulations study diffuse scattering in the relaxor ferroelectric system PSN (PbSc$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_3$). Constant temperature experiments show pressure induced transition to the relaxor phase at different temperatures characterized by butterfly and rod shaped diffuse scattering around the $\{$h00$\}$ and $\{$hh0$\}$ Bragg spots, respectively. The simulations reproduce the observed diffuse scattering features as well as their pressure-temperature behavi…
Atomistic effective Hamiltonian simulations are used to investigate electrocaloric (EC) effects in the lead-free Ba(Zr$_{0.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$)O$_{3}$ (BZT) relaxor ferroelectric. We find that the EC coefficient varies non-monotonically with the field at any temperature, presenting a maximum that can be traced back to the behavior of BZT's polar nanoregions. We also introduce a simple Landau-based model that reproduces the EC behavior of BZT as a function of field and temperature, and which is directly applicable to other compounds. Finally, we confirm that, for low temperatures (i.e., in non-ergodi…
