Detailed Raman spectroscopy studies on polycrystalline Sr1-xPrxTiO3 (x=0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.09, 0.13, 0.15, 0.17) samples are reported elucidating the microscopic mechanism of relaxor ferroelectrics. The polar mode was observed upto very high temperature ~1000 K suggesting that the dipoles exists at temperatures well above the characteristic relaxor temperatures and they develop a short range correlation at 505 K leading to formation of PNRs. The TO2 polar mode showed anomalous softening in cooling below T~505 K supporting the growth of PNRs. Fano resonance is reported in the Pr doped compounds which decreases with increasing doping. Our work on Pr doped SrTiO3 reveals that the local TiO6 octahedral tilt scales with the intensity of the polar mode and hence can be used as an order parameter for relaxor transition. The study showed that the paraelectric to relaxor ferroelectric phase transition in this compound is random polarizability instability driven phenomenon which is correlated with the local octahedral tilt angle. The study supports competition and cancelation between lattice and polar instabilities at global length scale while cooperation between the two at local length scale. The modulation in local structure of the material in temperature interval related to dielectric anomaly has been observed which is not been investigated previously by any structural tool.
Raman scattering in relaxor ferroelectric PbMg1/3Ta2/3O3 (PMT) was investigated in the single crystalline form in the temperature range of 20 - 295 K. Anomalous temperature dependence of the integrated intensity and the Raman line contours were found at the diffuse phase transition. A correlation between the anomalies in the integrated intensities and the dispersion of the dielectric response was observed. The distortions of Raman lines with decreasing temperature are discussed.
Polycrystalline samples of CuCrO2 were synthesized by solid state reaction method. Temperature dependent dielectric measurements, synchrotron x-ray diffraction (SXRD), pyroelectric current and Raman measurements have been performed on these samples. Evidences of the presence of relaxor type ferroelectricity, which otherwise have gone unnoticed in CuCrO2 system (a member of delafossite family) near room temperature, have been presented. Presence of broad maximum in dielectric permittivity and its frequency dispersion indicates relaxor-type ferroelectricity in CuCrO2 near room temperature. Caref…
Time-resolved spontaneous Raman spectroscopy serves as a probe for incoherent quasiparticle and collective excitation dynamics, and allows to distinguish symmetry changes across a photoinduced phase transition through the inelastic light scattering selection rules. Largely unexplored is the role of the Raman resonance enhancement in the time-domain, and the transient interaction between scattering from quasiparticles and collective excitations, with the latter interaction leading to a Fano interference. In this work, we report on the observation of a phonon Raman tensor quench and Fano interfe…
It is now well established that the unique properties of relaxor ferroelectrics are due to the presence of polar nanoregions (PNR's). We present recent results from Neutron and Raman scattering of single crystals of PZN, PZN-xPT, and PMN. Both sets of measurements provide information on the condensation of the PNR's and on their slow dynamics, directly through the central peak and, indirectly, through their coupling to transverse phonons. A comparative analysis of these results allows identification of three stages in the evolution of the PNR's with decreasing temperature: a purely dynamic sta…
The temperature dependent dielectric properties revealed re-entrant relaxor behaviour (Tm ~130 K and 210 K for 1 kHz) below a high temperature diffused phase transition, Tc ~270 K in lead cobalt niobate (PCN). Multiple positive/negative magnetodielectric effect and deviation from straight line at ~130 K is observed in temperature dependence of inverse susceptibility, which depicts origin of frustration. Microstructure examination depicts closely packed grains with grain size ~8-10 microm and XRD pattern revealed single phase pseudo cubic crystal structure having Pm3m symmetry with lattice cons…
Relaxor ferrolectrics are important in technological applications due to a strong electromechanical response, energy storage capacity, electrocaloric effect, and pyroelectric energy conversion properties. Current efforts to discover and design new materials in this class generally rely on substitutional doping of known ferroelectrics, as slight changes to local compositional order can significantly affect the Curie temperature, morphotropic phase boundary, and electromechanical responses. In this work, we demonstrate that moving to the strong limit of compositional complexity in an ABO3 perovs…
The light scattering properties of superconducting (Tc=3.8 K) heavily boron doped nanocrystalline diamond has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy using visible excitations. Fano type interference of the zone-center phonon line and the electronic continuum was identified. Lineshape analysis reveals Fano lineshapes with a significant asymmetry (q=-2). An anomalous wavelength dependence and small value of the Raman scattering amplitude is observed in agreement with previous studies.
Combining our comprehensive investigations of polarization evolution, soft-mode by Raman scattering and microstructure by TEM, and the results reported in the literatures, we show that prototypical relaxor Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) is essentially ferroelectric for T<Tc~225 K. Its anomalous dielectric behavior over a broad temperature range results from the reorientation of domains in the crystal. A physic picture of the structure evolution in relaxor is also revealed. It is found that nanometric ferroelectric domains (gennerally called as polar nano-region (PNR)) interact cooperatively to form mi…
We report a study on a series of lanthanum doped barium stannate-titanate (LBTS) ceramics towards correlating their microstructure with ferroelectric properties. The samples were prepared by solid state reaction technique and the XRD analysis indicated predominantly single phase microstructure. Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed that while a low La doping of 1 atomic % yielded inhibited grain growth in 1LBTS, higher amounts of La doping yield larger leafy grains. This peculiar grain growth and microstructure evolution could be attributed to the combination of the following two competing fac…
Lead-free Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.10Ti0.90O3 (BCZT) ceramic exhibits excellent dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties at the Morphotropic Phase Boundary (MPB). Previously, we demonstrated that the use of the anionic surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS, NaC12H25SO4) could enhance the dielectric properties of BCZT ceramic using surfactant-assisted solvothermal processing [1]. In the present study, structural, dielectric, ferroelectric properties, as well as electrocaloric effect and energy storage performances of this BCZT ceramic were thoroughly investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) …
As the silicon industry continues to push the limits of device dimensions, tools such as Raman spectroscopy are ideal to analyze and characterize the doped silicon channels. The effect of inter-valence band transitions on the zone center optical phonon in heavily p-type doped silicon is studied by Raman spectroscopy for a wide range of excitation wavelengths extending from the red (632.8 nm) into the ultra-violet (325 nm). The asymmetry in the one-phonon Raman lineshape is attributed to a Fano interference involving the overlap of a continuum of electronic excitations with a discrete phonon st…
Fano resonance spectra for the G band in metallic carbon nanotubes are calculated as a function of laser excitation energy in which the origin of the resonance is given by an interference between the continuous electronic Raman spectra and the discrete phonon spectra. We found that the second-order scattering process of the non-zero q electron-electron interaction is more relevant to the continuous spectra rather than the q = 0 first-order process because the q = 0 direct Coulomb interaction vanishes due to the symmetry of the two sublattices of a nanotube. We also show that the RBM spectra of…
Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ is one of the simplest representatives of the class of lead relaxors and often serves as a model system for more complicated compounds. In this paper we analyse both polarized and depolarized Raman scattering spectra, measured in the temperature range between 1000 and 100 K, by multiple peak decomposition. Basing on this analysis, we present the picture of transformations in the crystal and the nature of the spectral lines. According to our model, the formation of the Fm3m symmetry in the chemically ordered regions as well as the appearance and freezing of the p…

Tuning the electron-phonon interaction via exploring the interrelation between Urbach energy and Fano-type asymmetric Raman line shape in GO-hBN nanocomposites
Quantum interference gives rise to the asymmetric Fano resonance line shape when the final states of an electronic transition follows within a continuum of states and a discrete state, which has significant applications in optical switching and sensing. The resonant optical phenomena associated with Fano resonance have been observed by absorption spectra, Raman spectra, transmission spectra, etc., but have rarely been reported in photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. In this work, we performed spectroscopic studies on layered chromium thiophosphate (CrPS4), a promising ternary antiferromagnetic…
Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ is one of the simplest representatives of the lead ferroelectric relaxors. Its solid solution with PbTiO$_{3}$, at concentrations near the morphotropic phase boundary, is especially important. In this paper, we apply the tested earlier on Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ approach, to analyze the light scattering from both, nominally pure Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3} $)O$_{3}$ crystal and a crystal containing 4.5% of PbTiO$_{3}$, measured in a broad temperature range from 1000 to 100 K. We propose a comprehensive picture of the temperature evolution of the lattice dynam…
We report our Raman studies of a new lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics, Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti0.9Zr0.1O3 (BCTZO). The Raman modes of BCTZO are compared with those of BaTi0.8Zr0.2O3 (BTZO), and BaTiO3 (BTO). Also, they are compared with the eigenmodes of BTO calculated by using an ab-initio quantum-mechanical frozen-phonon method. The sharp mode at 321 cm-1 of BTO, reported as a coupled mode showing an interference effect, becomes progressively broader in BTZO and BCTZO. This behavior, together with a broadening of the 527-cm-1 mode, suggests that the mode-coupling is weakened in BTZO and BCTZO. The str…
High quality InN nanoparticles are grown using atmospheric chemical vapour deposition technique via a self-seeded catalytic approach in the temperature range of 580 to 650 oC. In this temperature region, nucleation barrier of InN is overcome by seeding the low density In nano-particles prior to the introduction of reactive ammonia. Samples having increasing carrier density are grown with the help of increasing growth temperature to understand its role in optical phonon structure. Near resonance Raman spectra show complete different phonon pictures as compared to those for the off-resonance spe…
We present polarization resolved Raman scattering study of surface vibration modes in the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ single crystal and thick films. Besides the four Raman active bulk phonons, we observed four additional modes with much weaker intensity and slightly lower energy than the bulk counterparts. Using symmetry analysis, we assigned these additional modes to out-of-plane surface phonons. Comparing with first principle calculations, we conclude that the appearance of these modes is due to $c$-axis lattice distortion and van der Waals gap expansion near the crystal surface. Two…

Electronic Raman scattering and optical phonon self-energies are studied on single crystals of $LuB_{12}$ with different isotopic composition in the temperature region 10-650K and at pressures up to 10 GPa. The shape and energy position of the spectral peaks depend on the magnitude of the probed wave vector, temperature, and symmetry of excitations. We simulated experimental spectra using electronic structure obtained in the density function theory and taking into account the electron-phonon scattering. The emergence of a broad continuum in the spectra is identified with the inelastic scatteri…

From the phase diagram as proposed by Lei et.al., [J. App. Phys 101, 084105 (2007)] a $BaSn_{0.15}Ti_{0.85}O_{3}$ is chosen showing a diffuse phase transition between cubic to rhombohedral (C-R) near room temperature. Dielectric analysis confirms a phase transition near room temperature ($T_{C}$ $\approx$ 290 K) and also frequency dispersion in dielectric constant is observed towards low temperature. Polarization and first-order reversal curves (FORC) suggest that the system is in re-entrant phase at low temperatures. Put together, all these electrical characterization results points toward th…
We have performed Raman scattering investigations on the high energy magnetic excitations in a BiFeO$_3$ single crystal as a function of both temperature and laser excitation energy. A strong feature observed at 1250 cm$^{-1}$ in the Raman spectra has been previously assigned to two phonon overtone. We show here that its unusual frequency shift with the excitation energy and its asymmetric temperature dependent Fano lineshape reveal a strong coupling to magnetic excitations. In the same energy range, we have also identified the two-magnon excitation with a temperature dependence very similar t…

Synthetic powder, ore samples and mineral single crystals of goethite ($α-$FeOOH) were investigated with polarized Raman spectroscopy at temperatures from 300 K to 473 K. The symmetry of the vibrational modes, observed in different scattering configurations, was determined unequivocally. The assignment of the Raman-active modes to definite atomic vibrations is supported by two types of lattice-dynamical calculations: empirical shell-model and $\textit{ab initio}$ DFT. The temperature dependencies of the lineshape parameters of some Raman-active vibrations near to the antiferromagnetic-paramagn…
It is shown theoretically that the buckling of the CuO$_{2}$ planes in certain cuprate systems can be explained in terms of an electric field across the planes which originates from different valences of atoms above and below the plane. This field results also in a strong coupling of the Raman-active out-of-phase vibration of the oxygen atoms ($B_{1g}$ mode) to the electronic charge transfer between the two oxygens in the CuO$_{2}$ plane. Consequently, the electric field can be deduced from the Fano-type line shape of the $B_{1g}$ phonon. Using the electric field estimated from the electron-ph…
From the new infrared (IR) reflectivity and time-domain terahertz (THz) spectra combined with available high-frequency dielectric data above the MHz range in a broad temperature range of 10-900 K, a full picture of the soft and central mode behavior in the classical relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) is suggested. A detailed comparison is given with the recent hyper-Raman spectroscopy data (Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 155501 (2016)), and also with other available experiments based on inelastic light and neutron scattering. The closest agreement is with the hyper-Raman data, both techniques…
Temperature dependences of the optic phonons in $\rm PbSc_{1/2}Ta_{1/2}O_3$ sol-gel films deposited on sapphire substrates were studied by means of Fourier transform far-infrared transmission spectroscopy in the temperature range 20-900\K. Four films displaying different B-site order with both ferroelectric and relaxor behavior were studied. In all cases the TO mode near 80\icm{} at 10\K{} softens on heating to $\approx$45\icm{} following the Cochran law with extrapolated critical temperature near 700\K{} (400\K{} above the temperature of dielectric maximum, $T_{\rm m}$), but above 600\K{} its…
Recently, we employed electronic polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy to reveal the strongly correlated excitonic insulator (EI) nature of Ta2NiSe5, Volkov et al. [arXiv:2007.07344], and also showed that for Ta$_2$Ni(Se$_{1-x}$S$_x$)$_5$ alloys the critical excitonic fluctuations diminish with sulfur concentration x exposing a cooperating lattice instability that takes over for large x, Volkov et al. [arXiv:2104.07032]. Here we focus on the lattice dynamics of this EI family. We identify all Raman-active optical phonons of fully symmetric and ac-quadrupole-like symmetries and study their e…
Ba{[Gax,Tax]Ti(1-2x)}O3 ceramics with x equal to 0, 0.0025, 0.005, 0.01, 0.025 and 0.05 have been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. Structural and dielectric characterization have been performed to investigate the effect of dipole-pair substitution concentration on the macroscopic dielectric properties. Ba{[Gax,Tax]Ti(1-2x)}O3 evolves from a classic ferroelectric to a diffuse phase transition (DPT) as x increases. Ba{[Gax,Tax]Ti(1-2x)}O3 for x > or = 0.01 possesses diffuseness parameters comparable to Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) and recently reported (Ba0.97Pr0.03)(Ti0.9425Ce…
We have studied spectral evolution of the $E_u^1$ phonon line of a topological insulator Bi$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Se$_3$ with temperature. Unlike the Raman-active phonons, the $E_u^1$ mode demonstrates softening upon cooling the crystal, and the corresponding spectral line acquires a pronounced Fano-like shape at temperatures $T\lesssim100$ K. We interpret the latter effect as a signature of specific coupling of the bulk infrared active phonons to surface Dirac electrons. Using coherent resonant excitation of the $E_u^1$ mode as a surface sensitive tool, we have detected softening of the surface counte…
