In this paper we establish some sophisticated congruences involving central binomial coefficients and Fibonacci numbers. For example, we show that if $p\not=2,5$ is a prime then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_{2k}\binom{2k}{k}=(-1)^{[p/5]}(1-(p/5)) (mod p^2)$$ and $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_{2k+1}\binom{2k}k=(-1)^{[p/5]}(p/5) (mod p^2).$$ We also obtain similar results for some other second-order recurrences and raise several conjectures.
Let $Φ_n^{(k)}(x)$ be the $k$-th derivative of $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial. Extending a work of D.~H.~Lehmer, we show some curious congruences: $2Φ^{(3)}_n(1)$ is divisible by $ϕ(n)-2$ and $Φ^{(2k+1)}_n(1)$ is divisible by $ϕ(n)-2k$ for $k\ge 2$. The congruence stems from a general property of self-reciprocal polynomials.
Let n be a positive odd integer and let p>n+1 be a prime. We mainly derive the following congruence: $$\sum_{0<i_1<...<i_n<p}(i_1/3)(-1)^{i_1}/(i_1...i_n)=0 (mod p).$$
We show that a congruence discovered by George E. Andrews in 1969 for the Fibonacci quotient directly implies a simpler congruence found by Hugh C. Williams in 1991.
By using Andrews's explicit formulae of the $q$-Fibonacci sequence introduced by Schur, we prove certain congruences of the $q$-Fibonacci sequence which relate the sequence with the original Fibonacci sequence. As a corollary, we show that it yields a transcendental element in the $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$ of integers modulo infinitely large primes under the generalized Riemann hypothesis.
Let $p$ be a prime and ${\mathcal{P}_{p}}$ the set of positive integers which are prime to $p$. We establish the following interesting congruence \[\sum\limits_{\begin{smallmatrix} i+j+k={{p}^{r}} i,j,k\in {\mathcal{P}_{p}} \end{smallmatrix}}{\frac{{{(-1)}^{i}}}{ijk}}\equiv \frac{{{p}^{r-1}}}{2}{{B}_{p-3}}\, (\bmod \, {{p}^{r}}).\]
We provide some variations on the Greene-Krammer's identity which involve q-Catalan numbers. Our method reveals a curious analogy between these new identities and some congruences modulo a prime.
We evaluate some types of infinite series with balancing and Lucas-balancing polynomials in closed form. These evaluations will lead to some new curious series for $π$ involving Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. Our findings complement those of Castellanos from 1986 and 1989.
We study generalized Fibonacci sequences $F_{n+1}=PF_n-QF_{n-1}$ with initial values $F_0=0$ and $F_1=1$. Let $P,Q$ be nonzero integers such that $P^2-4Q$ is not a perfect square. We show that if $Q=\pm 1$ then the sequence $\{F_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ misses a congruence class modulo every prime large enough. On the other hand, if $Q \neq \pm 1$, we prove that (under GRH) the sequence $\{F_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ hits every congruence class modulo infinitely many primes.
In this paper we obtain some congruences involving central binomial coefficients and Lucas sequences. For example, we show that if p>5 is a prime then $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_k*binom(2k,k)/12^k$ is congruent to 0,1,-1 modulo p according as p=1,4 (mod 5), p=13,17 (mod 30), and p=7,23 (mod 30) respectively, where {F_n} is the Fibonacci sequence. We also raise several conjectures.
Carmichael showed for sufficiently large $L$, that $F_L$ has at least one prime divisor that is $\pm 1({\rm mod}\, L)$. For a given $F_L$, we will show that a product of distinct odd prime divisors with that congruence condition is a Fibonacci pseudoprime. Such pseudoprimes can be used in an attempt, here unsuccessful, to find an example of a Baillie-PSW pseudoprime, i.e.\ an odd Fibonacci pseudoprime that is congruent to $\pm 2({\rm mod}\, 5)$ and is also a base-2 pseudoprime.
In this paper, we investigate the umbral representation of the Fubini polynomials $F_{x}^{n}:=F_{n}(x)$ to derive some properties involving these polynomials. For any prime number $p$ and any polynomial $f$ with integer coefficients, we show $(f(F_{x}))^{p}\equiv f(F_{x})$ and we give other curious congruences.
Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime, and let $q_p(2):=(2^{p-1}-1)/p$ be the Fermat quotient of $p$ to base 2. The following curious congruence was conjectured by L. Skula and proved by A. Granville $$ q_p(2)^2\equiv -\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{2^k}{k^2}\pmod{p}. $$ In this note we establish the above congruence by entirely elementary number theory arguments.
Let p be a prime and let a be a positive integer. In this paper we determine $\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{2k}{k+d}/m^k$ and $\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\binom{2k}{k+d}/(km^{k-1})$ modulo $p$ for all d=0,...,p^a, where m is any integer not divisible by p. For example, we show that if $p\not=2,5$ then $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}(-1)^k\frac{\binom{2k}k}k=-5\frac{F_{p-(\frac p5)}}p (mod p),$$ where F_n is the n-th Fibonacci number and (-) is the Jacobi symbol. We also prove that if p>3 then $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k}k={8/9} p^2B_{p-3} (mod p^3),$$ where B_n denotes the n-th Bernoulli number.
Let ${\mathcal{P}_{n}}$ denote the set of positive integers which are prime to $n$. Let $B_{n}$ be the $n$-th Bernoulli number. For any prime $p \ge 11$ and integer $r\ge 2$, we prove that $$ \sum\limits_{\begin{smallmatrix} {{l}_{1}}+{{l}_{2}}+\cdots +{{l}_{6}}={{p}^{r}} {{l}_{1}},\cdots ,{{l}_{6}}\in {\mathcal{P}_{p}} \end{smallmatrix}}{\frac{1}{{{l}_{1}}{{l}_{2}}{{l}_{3}}{{l}_{4}}{{l}_{5}}{l}_{6}}}\equiv - \frac{5!}{18}p^{r-1}B_{p-3}^{2} \pmod{{{p}^{r}}}. $$ This extends a family of curious congruences. We also obtain other interesting congruences involving multiple harmonic sums and Bernou…
The classical congruences satisfied by the Fibonacci and Lucas sequences are reflected with the decomposition of primes in the ring generated by the gold number. This generalizes to establish a correspondence that we hope will be new between Chebotarev's theorem and the congruences satisfied by linear sequences. This link is done into the context of number field extensions. In particular we characterize primes ideals totally decomposed by simple congruences on the terms of linear recurrent sequences. Our results are illustrated by numerous examples, including Padovan sequencesof group $S_3$ an…
Congruences modulo prime powers involving generalized Harmonic numbers are known. While looking for similar congruences, we have encountered a curious triangular array of numbers indexed with positive integers $n,k$, involving the Bernoulli and cycle Stirling numbers. These numbers are all integers and they vanish when $n-k$ is odd. This triangle has many similarities with the Stirling triangle. In particular, we show how it can be extended to negative indices and how this extension produces a {\it second kind} of such integers which may be considered as a new generalization of the Genocchi nu…
The Fibonacci numbers are the prototypical example of a recursive sequence, but grow too quickly to enumerate sets of integer partitions. The same is true for the other classical sequences $a(n)$ defined by Fibonacci-like recursions: the tribonacci, Padovan, Pell, Narayana's cows, and Lucas sequences. For each sequence $a(n)$, however, we can define a related sequence $\textrm{sa}(n)$ by defining $\textrm{sa}(n)$ to have the same recurrence and initial conditions as $a(n)$, except that $\textrm{sa}(2n)=\textrm{sa}(n)$. Growth is no longer a problem: for each $n$ we construct recursively a set …
We study higher-dimensional interlacing Fibonacci sequences, generated via both Chebyshev type functions and $m$-dimensional recurrence relations. For each integer $m$, there exist both rational and integer versions of these sequences, where the underlying prime congruence structures of the rational sequence denominators enables the integer sequence to be recovered. From either the rational or the integer sequences we construct sequences of vectors in $\mathbb{Q}^m$, which converge to irrational algebraic points in $\mathbb{R}^m$. The rational sequence terms can be expressed as simple recurren…
In 2003, Zhao discovered a curious congruence involving harmonic series and Bernoulli numbers: for any odd prime $p$, $$\sum_{\substack{i,j,k\ge 1\\\gcd(ijk,p)=1\ı+j+k=p}}\frac{1}{ijk}\equiv -2B_{p-3} \pmod{p},$$ where $B_n$ is the $n$-th Bernoulli number. This congruence was generalized by Wang and Cai in 2014, and Cai, Shen and Jia in 2017 by replacing the odd prime $p$ in the summation and modulus with an odd prime power, and a product of two odd prime powers, respectively. In particular, Cai, Shen and Jia proposed a conjectural congruence: for any positive integer $n$ with an odd prime fac…
Let $p>3$ be a prime. Euler numbers $E_{p-3}$ first appeared in H. S. Vandiver's work (1940) in connection with the first case of Fermat Last Theorem. Vandiver proved that $x^p+y^p=z^p$ has no solution for integers $x,y,z$ with $\gcd(xyz,p)=1$ if $E_{p-3}\equiv 0 (\bmod p)$. Numerous combinatorial congruences recently obtained by Z.-W. Sun and by Z.-H. Sun involve the Euler numbers $E_{p-3}$. This gives a new significance to the primes $p$ for which $E_{p-3}\equiv 0 (\bmod p)$. For the computation of residues of Euler numbers $E_{p-3}$ modulo a prime $p$, we use the congruence which runs signi…
