Continuing ideas of a recent preprint of Schwede arXiv:0906.4313 we study test ideals by viewing them as minimal objects in a certain class of $F$-pure modules over algebras of p^{-e}-linear operators. This shift in the viewpoint leads to a simplified and generalized treatment, also allowing us to define test ideals in non-reduced settings.
In combining this with an observation of Anderson on the contracting property of p^{-e}-linear operators we obtain an elementary approach to test ideals in the case of affine k-algebras, where k is an F-finite field. It also yields a short and completely elementary proof of the discreteness of their jumping numbers extending most cases where the discreteness of jumping numbers was shown in arXiv:0906.4679.
One studies plane Cremona maps by focusing on the ideal theoretic and homological properties of its homogeneous base ideal ("indeterminacy locus"). The {\em leitmotiv} driving a good deal of the work is the relation between the base ideal and its saturation. As a preliminary one deals with the homological features of arbitrary codimension 2 homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring in three variables over a field which are generated by three forms of the same degree. The results become sharp when the saturation is not generated in low degrees, a condition to be given a precise meaning. An implic…
We consider a rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}_k^{m} \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^n$ that is a parameterization of an $m$-dimensional variety. Our main goal is to study the $(m-1)$-dimensional fibers of $ϕ$ in relation to the $m$-th local cohomology modules of the Rees algebra of its base ideal.
We consider polynomial maps, which we call degree $d$-linear maps, that satisfy the Jacobian condition. We prove that certain infinite families of elements, which appear in the coefficients of the formal inverse of such maps, are in the ideal determined by the Jacobian condition. Using the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, we provide expressions for these elements in terms of the generators of that ideal. We also give a combinatorial proof of the Cayley-Hamilton theorem similar to that of Straubing \cite{Straubing}. We also include results of Gröbner basis computations regarding other elements.
We study determinantal Cremona maps, i.e. birational maps whose base ideal is the maximal minors ideal of a given matrix $Φ$, via the resolution of the polynomials systems defined by $Φ$. Using convex geometry, this approach leads in particular to describe the projective degrees of some almost linear determinantal maps.
There is a natural epimorphism from the symmetric algebra to the Rees algebra of an ideal. When this epimorphism is an isomorphism, we say that the ideal is of linear type. Given two determinantal rings over a field, we consider the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. We prove that the diagonal ideal is of linear type and recover the defining ideal of the Rees algebra in some special cases. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety.
Given two determinantal rings over a field k. We consider the Rees algebra of the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety. When the Rees algebra and the Symmetric algebra coincide, we show that the Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay.
For a pair $(P,Q)$ of finite posets the generators of the ideal $L(P,Q)$ correspond bijectively to the isotone maps from $P$ to $Q$. In this note we determine all pairs $(P,Q)$ for which the Alexander dual of $L(P,Q)$ coincides with $L(Q,P)$, up to a switch of the indices.
This paper is a survey on major results on Hilbert functions of multigraded algebras and mixed multiplicities of ideals, including their applications to the computation of Milnor numbers of complex analytic hypersurfaces with isolated singularity, multiplicities of blowup algebras and mixed volumes of polytopes.
Fermat ideals define planar point configurations that are closely related to the intersection locus of the members of a specific pencil of curves. These ideals have gained recent popularity as counterexamples to some proposed containments between symbolic and ordinary powers. We give a systematic treatment of the family of Fermat ideals, describing explicitly the minimal generators and the minimal free resolutions of all their ordinary powers as well as many symbolic powers. We use these to study the ordinary and the symbolic Rees algebra of Fermat ideals. Specifically, we show that the symbol…
This work is about symbolic powers of codimension two perfect ideals in a standard polynomial ring over a field, where the entries of the corresponding presentation matrix are general linear forms. The main contribution of the present approach is the use of the birational theory underlying the nature of the ideal and the details of a deep interlacing between generators of its symbolic powers and the inversion factors stemming from the inverse map to the birational map defined by the linear system spanned by the generators of this ideal. A full description of the corresponding symbolic Rees alg…
Let $I$ be a perfect ideal of height 3 in a Gorenstein local ring $R$. Let $\mathbb{F}$ be the minimal free resolution of $I$. A sequence of linear maps, which generalize the multiplicative structure of $\mathbb{F}$, can be defined using the generic ring associated to the format of $\mathbb{F}$. Let $J$ be an ideal linked to $I$. We provide formulas to compute some of these maps for the free resolution of $J$ in terms of those of the free resolution of $I$. We apply our results to describe classes of licci ideals, showing that a perfect ideal with Betti numbers $(1,5,6,2)$ is licci if and only…
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
In the article "Non-commutative Grobner bases for commutative algebras", Eisenbud-Peeva-Sturmfels proved a number of results regarding Grobner bases and initial ideals of those ideals in the free associative algebra which contain the commutator ideal. We prove similar results for ideals which contains the anti-commutator ideal (the defining ideal of the exterior algebra). We define one notion of generic initial ideals in the free assoicative algebra, and show that gin's of ideals containing the commutator ideal, or the anti-commutator ideal, are finitely generated.
In this article, we compute the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs. We obtain a lower bound for the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals. We also study some algebraic properties of the Rees algebra and special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs via algebraic properties of their initial algebra and Sagbi basis theory. We obtain an upper bound for the regularity of the special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs.
The properties of the intersection algebra of two principal monomial ideals in a polynomial ring are investigated in detail. Results are obtained regarding the Hilbert series and the canonical ideal of the intersection algebra using methods from the theory of diophantine linear equations with integer coefficients.
Let $I$ be an ideal whose symbolic Rees algebra is Noetherian. For $m \geq 1$, the $m$-th symbolic defect, sdefect$(I,m)$, of $I$ is defined to be the minimal number of generators of the module $\frac{I^{(m)}}{I^m}$. We prove that sdefect$(I,m)$ is eventually quasi-polynomial as a function in $m$. We compute the symbolic defect explicitly for certain monomial ideals arising from graphs, termed cover ideals. We go on to give a formula for the Waldschmidt constant, an asymptotic invariant measuring the growth of the degrees of generators of symbolic powers, for ideals whose symbolic Rees algebra…
Generalizing techniques that prove that Veronese subrings are Koszul, we show that Rees and multi-Rees algebras of certain types of principal strongly stable ideals are Koszul. We provide explicit Gröbner basis for the defining ideals of these multi-Rees algebras with squarefree initial monomials, to show that they are also normal Cohen-Macaulay domains.
When $R$ is a Noetherian ring and we have a family of ideals in which every ideal contains at least one nonzero divisor, then it is already known that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of these ideals is equal to a saturated ideal. In such a case to get the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra we only need to saturate the first syzygies of direct sum of this family of ideals. However, this fact is not true, when at least one of these ideals does not contain any nonzero divisor. In this paper we show that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of a family of ideals of a pol…
In this article we study the defining ideal of Rees algebras of ideals of star configurations. We characterize when these ideals are of linear type and provide sufficient conditions for them to be of fiber type. In the case of star configurations of height two, we give a full description of the defining ideal of the Rees algebra, by explicitly identifying a minimal generating set.
We study the Rees algebra of a perfect Gorenstein ideal of codimension 3 in a hypersurface ring. We provide a minimal generating set of the defining ideal of these rings by introducing a modified Jacobian dual and applying a recursive algorithm. Once the defining equations are known, we explore properties of these Rees algebras such as Cohen-Macaulayness and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
We study the finite generation of the intersection algebra of two principal ideals I and J in a unique factorization domain R. We provide an algorithm that produces a list of generators of this algebra over R. In the special case that R is a polynomial ring, this algorithm has been implemented in the commutative algebra software system Macaulay2. A new class of algebras, called fan algebras, is introduced.
We construct a noncoherent initial ideal of an ideal in the exterior algebra of order 6, answering a question of D. Maclagan (2000). We also give a method for constructing noncoherent initial ideals in exterior algebras using certain noncoherent term orders.
We study ideals which are generated by monomials of degree $d$ in the polynomial ring in $n$ variables and which satisfy certain numerical side conditions regarding their exponents. Typical examples of such ideals are the ideals of Veronese type, squarefree Veronese ideals or $t$-spread Veronese ideals. In this paper we focus on $c$-bounded $t$-spread Veronese ideals and on Veronese ideals of bounded support. Their powers as well as their fiber cone is also be considered.
This paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition for Gorensteinness in Rees algebras of the $d$-th power of parameter ideals in certain Noetherian local rings of dimension $d\ge 2$. The main result of this paper produces many Gorenstein Rees algebras over non-Cohen-Macaulay local rings. For example, the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{q}^d)=\oplus_{i\ge 0}\mathfrak{q}^{di}$ is Gorenstein for every parameter ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ that is a reduction of the maximal ideal in a $d$-dimensional Buchsbaum local ring of depth 1 and multiplicity 2.
In this article, we introduce a relation including ideals of an evolution algebra and hereditary subsets of vertices of its associated graph and establish some properties among them. This relation allows us to determine maximal ideals and ideals having the absorption property of an evolution algebra in terms of its associated graph. We also define a couple of order-preserving maps, one from the sets of ideals of an evolution algebra to that of hereditary subsets of the corresponding graph, and the other in the reverse direction. Conveniently restricted to the set of absorption ideals and to th…
Let $m,n\geq 3$, $(m-1)(n-1)+2\leq p\leq mn$, and $u=mn-p$. The set $\mathbb{R}^{u\times n\times m}$ of all real tensors with size $u\times n\times m$ is one to one corresponding to the set of bilinear maps $\mathbb{R}^m\times \mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}^u$. We show that $\mathbb{R}^{m\times n\times p}$ has plural typical ranks $p$ and $p+1$ if and only if there exists a nonsingular bilinear map $\mathbb{R}^m\times\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^{u}$. We show that there is a dense open subset $\mathscr{O}$ of $\mathbb{R}^{u\times n\times m}$ such that for any $Y\in\mathscr{O}$, the ideal of maximal m…
Let G be a perfect graph and let J be its ideal of vertex covers. We show that the Rees algebra of J is normal and that this algebra is Gorenstein if G is unmixed. Then we give a description--in terms of cliques--of the symbolic Rees algebra and the Simis cone of the edge ideal of G.
We introduce and study vertex cover algebras of weighted simplicial complexes. These algebras are special classes of symbolic Rees algebras. We show that symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals are finitely generated and that such an algebra is normal and Cohen-Macaulay if the monomial ideal is squarefree. For a simple graph, the vertex cover algebra is generated by elements of degree 2, and it is standard graded if and only if the graph is bipartite. We also give a general upper bound for the maximal degree of the generators of vertex cover algebras.
