Border bases arise as a canonical generalization of Gröbner bases. We provide a polyhedral characterization of all order ideals (and hence border bases) that are supported by a zero-dimensional ideal: order ideals that support a border basis correspond one-to-one to integral points of the order ideal polytope. In particular, we establish a crucial connection between the ideal and its combinatorial structure. Based on this characterization we adapt the classical border basis algorithm to allow for computing border bases for arbitrary order ideals, which are independent of term orderings. We also show that finding a maximum weight order ideal that supports a border basis is NP-hard, and that the convex hull of admissible order ideals has no polynomial polyhedral description.
The main ingredient to construct an O-border basis of an ideal I $\subseteq$ K[x1,. .., xn] is the order ideal O, which is a basis of the K-vector space K[x1,. .., xn]/I. In this paper we give a procedure to find all the possible order ideals associated with a lattice ideal IM (where M is a lattice of Z n). The construction can be applied to ideals of any dimension (not only zero-dimensional) and shows that the possible order ideals are always in a finite number. For lattice ideals of positive dimension we also show that, although a border basis is infinite, it can be defined in finite terms. …
In this paper we consider the problem of computing all possible order ideals and also sets connected to 1, and the corresponding border bases, for the vanishing ideal of a given finite set of points. In this context two different approaches are discussed: based on the Buchberger-Möller Algorithm, we first propose a new algorithm to compute all possible order ideals and the corresponding border bases for an ideal of points. The second approach involves adapting the Farr-Gao Algorithm for finding all sets connected to 1, as well as the corresponding border bases, for an ideal of points. It shoul…
Given a finite order ideal $\mathcal O$ in the polynomial ring $K[x_1,\dots, x_n]$ over a field $K$, let $\partial \mathcal O$ be the border of $\mathcal O$ and $\mathcal P_{\mathcal O}$ the Pommaret basis of the ideal generated by the terms outside $\mathcal O$. In the framework of reduction structures introduced by Ceria, Mora, Roggero in 2019, we investigate relations among $\partial\mathcal O$-marked sets (resp. bases) and $\mathcal P_{\mathcal O}$-marked sets (resp. bases). We prove that a $\partial\mathcal O$-marked set $B$ is a marked basis if and only if the $\mathcal P_{\mathcal O}$-m…
Every tropical ideal in the sense of Maclagan-Rincón has an associated tropical variety, a finite polyhedral complex equipped with positive integral weights on its maximal cells. This leads to the realisability question, ubiquitous in tropical geometry, of which weighted polyhedral complexes arise in this manner. Using work of Las Vergnas on the non-existence of tensor products of matroids, we prove that there is no tropical ideal whose variety is the Bergman fan of the direct sum of the Vámos matroid and the uniform matroid of rank two on three elements, and in which all maximal cones have we…
The theory of border bases for zero-dimensional ideals has attracted several researchers in symbolic computation due to their numerical stability and mathematical elegance. As shown in (Francis & Dukkipati, J. Symb. Comp., 2014), one can extend the concept of border bases over Noetherian rings whenever the corresponding residue class ring is finitely generated and free. In this paper we address the following problem: Can the concept of border basis over Noetherian rings exists for ideals when the corresponding residue class rings are finitely generated but need not necessarily be free modules?…
A good way of parametrizing 0-dimensional schemes in an affine space $\mathbb{A}_K^n$ has been developed in the last 20 years using border basis schemes. Given a multiplicity $μ$, they provide an open covering of the Hilbert scheme ${\rm Hilb}^μ(\mathbb{A}^n_K)$ and can be described by easily computable quadratic equations. A natural question arises on how to determine loci which are contained in border basis schemes and whose rational points represent 0-dimensional $K$-algebras sharing a given property. The main focus of this paper is on giving effective answers to this general problem. The p…

Normalization of polynomials plays a vital role in the approximate basis computation of vanishing ideals. Coefficient normalization, which normalizes a polynomial with its coefficient norm, is the most common method in computer algebra. This study proposes the gradient-weighted normalization method for the approximate border basis computation of vanishing ideals, inspired by recent developments in machine learning. The data-dependent nature of gradient-weighted normalization leads to better stability against perturbation and consistency in the scaling of input points, which cannot be attained …
We give a notion of "combinatorial proximity" among strongly stable ideals in a given polynomial ring with a fixed Hilbert polynomial. We show that this notion guarantees "geometric proximity" of the corresponding points in the Hilbert scheme. We define a graph whose vertices correspond to strongly stable ideals and whose edges correspond to pairs of adjacent ideals. Every term order induces an orientation of the edges of the graph. This directed graph describes the behavior of the points of the Hilbert scheme under Gröbner degenerations with respect to the given term order. Then, we introduce…

Function classes are collections of Boolean functions on a finite set, which are fundamental objects of study in theoretical computer science. We study algebraic properties of ideals associated to function classes previously defined by the third author. We consider the broad family of intersection-closed function classes, and describe cellular free resolutions of their ideals by order complexes of the associated posets. For function classes arising from matroids, polyhedral cell complexes, and more generally interval Cohen-Macaulay posets, we show that the multigraded Betti numbers are pure, a…
In this paper, we extend the characterization of $\mathbb{Z}[x]/\ < f \ >$, where $f \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ to be a free $\mathbb{Z}$-module to multivariate polynomial rings over any commutative Noetherian ring, $A$. The characterization allows us to extend the Gröbner basis method of computing a $\Bbbk$-vector space basis of residue class polynomial rings over a field $\Bbbk$ (Macaulay-Buchberger Basis Theorem) to rings, i.e. $A[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/\mathfrak{a}$, where $\mathfrak{a} \subseteq A[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ is an ideal. We give some insights into the characterization for two special cases, when $…
