Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let $G$ be a finite group. Suppose $B$ is a block of $kG$ with dihedral defect groups such that there are precisely two isomorphism classes of simple $B$-modules. The description by Erdmann of the quiver and relations of the basic algebra of $B$ is usually only given up to a certain parameter $c$ which is either 0 or 1. In this article, we show that $c=0$ if there exists a central extension $\hat{G}$ of $G$ by a group of order 2 together with a block $\hat{B}$ of $k\hat{G}$ with generalized quaternion defect groups such that $B$ is contained in the image of $\hat{B}$ under the natural surjection from $k\hat{G}$ onto $kG$. As a special case, we obtain that $c=0$ if $G=\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ for some odd prime power $q$ and $B$ is the principal block of $k \mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$.
We finish off the classification of the endo-trivial modules of finite groups with Sylow $2$-subgroups isomorphic to a semi-dihedral $2$-group started by Carlson, Mazza and Thévenaz in their article "Endotrivial modules over groups with quaternion or semi-dihedral Sylow $2$-subgroup" published in 2013.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We compute the vertices of all indecomposable $kD_8$-modules for the dihedral group $D_8$ of order 8. We also give a conjectural formula of the induced module of a string module from $kT_0$ to $kG$ where $G$ is a dihedral group of order $\geq 8$ and where $T_0$ is a dihedral subgroup of index 2 of $G$. Some cases where we verified this formula are given.
While the finite-dimensional modules of the dihedral 2-groups over fields of characteristic 2 were classified over 30 years ago, very little is known about the tensor products of such modules. In this article, we compute the Loewy length of the tensor product of two modules of a dihedral two-group in characteristic 2. As an immediate consequence, we determine when such a tensor product has a projective direct summand.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let W be the ring of infinite Witt vectors over k. Suppose G is a finite group and B is a block of kG with a dihedral defect group D such that there are precisely two isomorphism classes of simple B-modules. We determine the universal deformation ring R(G,V) for every finitely generated kG-module V which belongs to B and whose stable endomorphism ring is isomorphic to k. The description by Erdmann of the quiver and relations of the basic algebra of B is usually only determined up to a certain parameter c which is either 0 or 1. We…
In by now classical work, K. Erdmann classified blocks of finite groups with dihedral defect groups (and more generally algebras of dihedral type) up to Morita equivalence. In the explicit description by quivers and relations of such algebras with two simple modules, several subtle problems about scalars occurring in relations remained unresolved. In particular, for the dihedral case it is a longstanding open question whether blocks of finite groups can occur for both possible scalars 0 and 1. In this article, using Kuelshammer ideals (a.k.a. generalized Reynolds ideals), we provide the first …
Given a dihedral $2$-group $P$ of order at least~8, we classify the splendid Morita equivalence classes of principal $2$-blocks with defect groups isomorphic to $P$. To this end we construct explicit stable equivalences of Morita type induced by specific Scott modules using Brauer indecomposability and gluing methods; we then determine when these stable equivalences are actually Morita equivalences, and hence automatically splendid Morita equivalences. Finally, we compute the generalised decomposition numbers in each case.
Let $K = \mathbb R$ or $\mathbb C$ and $\mathcal R_n$ be the dihedral quandle of order $n$: In this article, we give decomposition of the quandle ring $K[\mathcal R_n]$ into indecomposable right $K[\mathcal R_n]$-modules for all even $n \in \mathbb N$. It follows that the decomposition of $K[\mathcal R_n]$ given in [EFT19, Prop. 4.18(2)] is valid only in the case when $n$ is not divisible by $4.$
Let D_n be the dihedral group of order 2n where n \ge 2, 1 \to R \to F \to D_n \to 1 be a free presentation of D_n. R^{ab}:=R/[R,R] becomes a \bm{Z}[D_n]-lattice. We will study the module structure and the rationality problem of R^{ab}.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and $G$ a finite group. We provide a description of the torsion subgroup $TT(G)$ of the finitely generated abelian group $T(G)$ of endo-trivial $kG$-modules when $p=2$ and $G$ has a dihedral Sylow $2$-subgroup $P$. We prove that, in the case $|P|\geq 8$, $TT(G)\cong X(G)$ the group of one-dimensional $kG$-modules, except possibly when $G/O_{2'}(G)\cong \mathfrak{A}_6$, the alternating group of degree $6$; in which case $G$ may have $9$-dimensional simple torsion endo-trivial modules. We also prove a similar result in the case $|P…
We show that several Morita equivalence classes of tame algebras do not occur as blocks of finite groups. This refines classifications by Erdmann of classes of blocks with dihedral, semidihedral, and generalised quaternion defect groups. In particular we now have a complete classification of the Morita equivalence classes of blocks of finite groups with dihedral defect groups.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let $W$ be the ring of infinite Witt vectors over $k$. Suppose $D$ is a dihedral 2-group. We prove that the universal deformation ring $R(D,V)$ of an endo-trivial $kD$-module $V$ is always isomorphic to $W[\mathbb{Z}/2\times\mathbb{Z}/2]$. As a consequence we obtain a similar result for modules $V$ with stable endomorphism ring $k$ belonging to an arbitrary nilpotent block with defect group $D$. This confirms for such $V$ conjectures on the ring structure of the universal deformation ring of $V$ which had previously been shown f…
Motivated by recent problems regarding the symmetry of Hecke algebras, we investigate the symmetry of the endomorphism algebra $E_P(M)$ for $P$ a $p$-group and $M$ a $kP$-module with $k$ a field of characteristic $p$. We provide a complete analysis for cyclic $p$-groups and the dihedral 2-groups. For the dihedral 2-groups, this requires the classification of the indecomposable modules in terms of string modules and band modules. We generalize our techniques to consider $E_Λ(M)$ for $Λ$ a Nakayama algebra, a local algebra, or even an arbitrary algebra.
This paper is a major step in the classification of endotrivial modules over p-groups. Let G be a finite p-group and k be a field of characteristic p. A kG-module M is an endo-trivial module if {\End_k(M)\cong k\oplus F} as kG-modules, where F is a free module. The classification of endo-trivial modules is the crucial step for understanding the more general class of endo-permutation modules. The endo-permutation modules play an important role in module theory, in particular as source modules, and in block theory where they appear in the description of source algebras. Endo-trivial modules are …
We prove that splendid Morita equivalences between principal blocks of finite groups with dihedral Sylow $2$-subgroups realised by Scott modules can be lifted to splendid Morita equivalences between principal blocks of finite groups with generalised quaternion Sylow $2$-subgroups realised by Scott modules.
Motivated by an observation in "Vertices, sources and Green correspondents of the simple modules for the large Mathieu groups", J. of Algebra 322, we determine the source algebra, and therefore all the structure, of the blocks without essential Brauer pairs where the simple modules of all the Brauer corespondents have trivial sources.
In this article, we prove that induced modules of support $τ$-tilting modules over blocks of finite groups satisfying inertial-invariant condition are also support $τ$-tilting modules.
In this article we study support $τ$-tilting modules, semibricks and more over blocks of group algebras. Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, $\tilde{G}$ a finite group and $G$ a normal subgroup of $\tilde{G}$. Moreover, let $\tilde{B}$ be a block of $k\tilde{G}$ and $B$ a block of $kG$ covered by $\tilde{B}$. We show that, under certain conditions for the factor group $\tilde{G}/G$ and $B$, induced modules and extending modules of support $τ$-tilting modules and semibricks over $B$ are also the ones over $\tilde{B}$, respectively.
Relying on the classification of the indecomposable liftable modules in arbitrary blocks with non-trivial cyclic defect groups we give a complete classification of the trivial source modules lying in such blocks, describing in particular their associated path on the Brauer tree of the block in the sense of Janusz (1969). The appendix contains a description of the minimal distance from an arbitrary non-projective indecomposable liftable module to the boundary of the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver of the block.
We investigate the source algebra class of a p-block with cyclic defect groups of the group algebra of a finite group. By the work of Linckelmann this class is parametrized by the Brauer tree of the block together with a sign function on its vertices and an endo-permutation module of a defect group. We prove that this endo-permutation module can be read off from the character table of the group. We also prove that this module is trivial for all cyclic p-blocks of quasisimple groups with a simple quotient which is a sporadic group, an alternating group, a group of Lie type in defining character…
In this paper, we investigate the block that has an abelian defect group of rank $2$ and its Brauer correspondent has only one simple module. We will get an isotypy between the block and its Brauer correspondent. It will generalize the result of Kessar and Linckelmann (\cite{KL}).
We show that two blocks of generalized quaternion defect with three simple modules over a sufficiently large $2$-adic ring $\mathcal O$ are Morita-equivalent if and only if the corresponding blocks over the residue field of $\mathcal O$ are Morita-equivalent. As a corollary we show that any two blocks defined over $\mathcal O$ with three simple modules and the same generalized quaternion defect group are derived equivalent.
Let $G$ be a simple, simply connected linear algebraic group of exceptional type defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with Frobenius endomorphism $F: G \to G$. In this work we give upper bounds on the number of simple modules in the quasi-isolated $\ell$-blocks of $G^F$ and $G^F/Z(G^F)$ when $\ell$ is bad for $G$.
Let B be a p-block of the finite group G. We observe that the p-fusion of G constrains the module structure of B: Any basis of B that is invariant under the left and right multiplications of a chosen Sylow p-subgroup S of G must in fact form a semicharacteristic biset for the fusion system on S induced by G. The parameterization of such semicharacteristic bisets can then be applied to relate the module structure and defect theory of B.
We prove that if $B$ is a $p$-block with non-trivial defect group $D$ of a finite $p$-solvable group $G$, then $\ell(B) < p^r$, where $r$ is the sectional rank of $D$. We remark that there are infinitely many $p$-blocks $B$ with non-Abelian defect groups and $\ell(B) = p^r - 1$. We conjecture that the inequality $\ell(B) \leq p^r$ holds for an arbitrary $p$-block with defect group of sectional rank $r$. We show this to hold for a large class of $p$-blocks of various families of quasi-simple and nearly simple groups.
We compare lower defect groups associated with $p$-regular classes and vertices of simple modules for a block of a finite group algebra. We show that lower defect groups are contained in vertices of simple modules after suitable reordering. Moreover, for a block of principal type, we show that a $p$-regular lower defect group which contains a vertex of simple module is a defect group of the block.
Let $k$ be a field of odd prime characteristic $p$. We calculate the Lie algebra structure of the first Hochschild cohomology of a class of quantum complete intersections over $k$. As a consequence, we prove that if $B$ is a defect $2$-block of a finite group algebra $kG$ whose Brauer correspondent $C$ has a unique isomorphism class of simple modules, then a basic algebra of $B$ is a local algebra which can be generated by at most $2\sqrt I$ elements, where $I$ is the inertial index of $B$, and where we assume that $k$ is a splitting field for $B$ and $C$.

Let G be a finite group, and let Omega:={t\in G\mid t^2=1}. Then Omega is a G-set under conjugation. Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. It is shown that each projective indecomposable summand of the G-permutation module kOmega is irreducible and self-dual, whence it belongs to a real 2-block of defect zero. This, together with the fact that each irreducible kG-module that belongs to a real 2-block of defect zero occurs with multiplicity 1 as a direct summand of kOmega, establishes a bijection between the projective components of kOmega and the real 2-blocks of G of def…
We study the finitely generated abelian group $T(G)$ of endo-trivial $kG$-modules where $kG$ is the group algebra of a finite group $G$ over a field of characteristic $p>0$. When the representation type of the group algebra is not wild, the group structure of $T(G)$ is known for the cases where a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ of $G$ is cyclic, semi-dihedral and generalized quaternion. We investigate $T(G)$, and more accurately, its torsion subgroup $TT(G)$ for the case where $P$ is a Klein-four group. More precisely, we give a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of the centralizers of involut…
This paper deals with the Cayley graph $\mathrm{Cay}(\mathrm{Sym}_n,T_n),$ where the generating set consists of all block transpositions. A motivation for the study of these particular Cayley graphs comes from current research in Bioinformatics. As the main result, we prove that Aut$(\mathrm{Cay}(\mathrm{Sym}_n,T_n))$ is the product of the left translation group by a dihedral group $\mathsf{D}_{n+1}$ of order $2(n+1)$. The proof uses several properties of the subgraph $Γ$ of $\mathrm{Cay}(\mathrm{Sym}_n,T_n)$ induced by the set $T_n$. In particular, $Γ$ is a $2(n-2)$-regular graph whose automo…
For an arbitrary infinite field k of characteristic p > 0, we describe the structure of a block of the algebraic monoid M_n(k) (all n x n matrices over k), or, equivalently, a block of the Schur algebra S(n,p), whose simple modules are indexed by p-hook partitions. The result is known; we give an elementary and self-contained proof, based only on a result of Peel and Donkin's description of the blocks of Schur algebras. The result leads to a character formula for certain simple GL_n(k)-modules, valid for all n and all p. This character formula is a special case of one found by Brundan, Kleshch…
