For every p in (0,1/2), we give an explicit construction of binary codes of rate approaching "capacity" 1-H(p) that enable reliable communication in the presence of worst-case additive errors}, caused by a channel oblivious to the codeword (but not necessarily the message). Formally, we give an efficient "stochastic" encoding E(\cdot,\cdot) of messages combined with a small number of auxiliary random bits, such that for every message m and every error vector e (that could depend on m) that contains at most a fraction p of ones, w.h.p over the random bits r chosen by the encoder, m can be efficiently recovered from the corrupted codeword E(m,r) + e by a decoder without knowledge of the encoder's randomness r.
Our construction for additive errors also yields explicit deterministic codes of rate approaching 1-H(p) for the "average error" criterion: for every error vector e of at most p fraction 1's, most messages m can be efficiently (uniquely) decoded from the corrupted codeword C(m)+e. Note that such codes cannot be linear, as the bad error patterns for all messages are the same in a linear code. We also give a new proof of the existence of such codes based on list decoding and certain algebraic manipulation detection codes. Our proof is simpler than the previous proofs from the literature on arbitrarily varying channels.
We consider the additive white Gaussian noise channels. We prove that the error probability of decoding tends to one exponentially for rates above the capacity and derive the optimal exponent function. We shall demonstrate that the information spectrum approach is quite useful for investigating this problem.
The capacity-achieving input distribution of the discrete-time, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with an amplitude constraint is discrete and seems difficult to characterize explicitly. A dual capacity expression is used to derive analytic capacity upper bounds for scalar and vector AWGN channels. The scalar bound improves on McKellips' bound and is within 0.1 bits of capacity for all signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The two-dimensional bound is within 0.15 bits of capacity provably up to 4.5 dB, and numerical evidence suggests a similar gap for all SNRs.
This article studies the zero-error feedback capacity of {\em causal} discrete channels with memory. First, by extending the classical zero-error feedback capacity concept, a new notion of {\em uniform zero-error feedback capacity} $ C_{0f} $ for such channels is introduced. Using this notion a tight condition for {bounded} stabilization of unstable {noisy} linear systems via causal channels is obtained, assuming no {channel} state information at either end of the channel.
It is known that for a discrete channel with correlated additive noise, the ordinary capacity with or without feedback both equal $ \log q-\mathcal{H} (Z) $, where $ \mathcal{H}(Z) $ is the entropy rate of the noise process $ Z $ and $ q $ is the alphabet size. In this paper, a class of finite-state additive noise channels is introduced. It is shown that the zero-error feedback capacity of such channels is either zero or $C_{0f} =\log q -h (Z) $, where $ h (Z) $ is the {\em topological entropy} of the noise process. A topological condition is given when the zero-error capacity is zero, with or…
This paper investigates the capacity of a communications channel that, in addition to additive white Gaussian noise, also suffers from interference caused by a co-existing radar transmission. The radar interference (of short duty-cycle and of much wider bandwidth than the intended communication signal) is modeled as an additive term whose amplitude is known and constant, but whose phase is independent and identically uniformly distributed at each channel use. The capacity achieving input distribution, under the standard average power constraint, is shown to have independent modulo and phase. T…
In some applications, the variance of additive measurement noise depends on the signal that we aim to measure. For instance, additive Gaussian signal-dependent noise (AGSDN) channel models are used in molecular and optical communication. Herein we provide lower and upper bounds on the capacity of additive signal-dependent noise (ASDN) channels. The idea of the first lower bound is the extension of the majorization inequality, and for the second one, it uses some calculations based on the fact that $h(Y) > h (Y|Z)$. Both of them are valid for all additive signal-dependent noise (ASDN) channels …
Strong secrecy capacity of compound wiretap channels is studied. The known lower bounds for the secrecy capacity of compound finite-state memoryless channels under discrete alphabets are extended to arbitrary uncertainty sets and continuous alphabets under the strong secrecy criterion. The conditions under which these bounds are tight are given. Under the saddle-point condition, the compound secrecy capacity is shown to be equal to that of the worst-case channel. Based on this, the compound Gaussian MIMO wiretap channel is studied under the spectral norm constraint and without the degradedness…
A discrete compound channel with memory is considered, where no stationarity, ergodicity or information stability is required, and where the uncertainty set can be arbitrary. When the discrete noise is additive but otherwise arbitrary and there is no cost constraint on the input, it is shown that the causal feedback does not increase the capacity. This extends the earlier result obtained for general single-state channels with full transmitter (Tx) channel state information (CSI) to the compound setting. It is further shown that, for this compound setting and under a mild technical condition on…

We introduce a new algorithm for realizing Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding in discrete channels with or without memory. In it, the receiver rank orders noise sequences from most likely to least likely. Subtracting noise from the received signal in that order, the first instance that results in a member of the code-book is the ML decoding. We name this algorithm GRAND for Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding. We establish that GRAND is capacity-achieving when used with random code-books. For rates below capacity we identify error exponents, and for rates beyond capacity we identify success …
We study non-asymptotic fundamental limits for transmitting classical information over memoryless quantum channels, i.e. we investigate the amount of classical information that can be transmitted when a quantum channel is used a finite number of times and a fixed, non-vanishing average error is permissible. We consider the classical capacity of quantum channels that are image-additive, including all classical to quantum channels, as well as the product state capacity of arbitrary quantum channels. In both cases we show that the non-asymptotic fundamental limit admits a second-order approximati…
In the theory of wireless communications, average performance measures (APMs) are widely utilized to quantify the performance gains/impairments in various fading environments under various scenarios, and to comprehend how the factors arising from design/implementation affect system performance. To the best of our knowledge, it has not been yet discovered in the literature how these APMs relate to each other. In this article, having been inspired by the work of Verdu et al. [1], we propose that one APM can be calculated using the other APMs instead of using the end-to-end SNR distribution. Part…
We consider a setting where a stream of qubits is processed sequentially. We derive fundamental limits on the rate at which classical information can be transmitted using qubits that decohere as they wait to be processed. Specifically, we model the sequential processing of qubits using a single server queue, and derive expressions for the classical capacity of such a quantum `queue-channel.' Focusing on two important noise models, namely the erasure channel and the depolarizing channel, we obtain explicit single-letter capacity formulas in terms of the stationary waiting time of qubits in the …
Finding the optimal encoding strategies can be challenging for communication using quantum channels, as classical and quantum capacities may be superadditive. Entanglement assistance can often simplify this task, as the entanglement-assisted classical capacity for any channel is additive, making entanglement across channel uses unnecessary. If the entanglement assistance is limited, the picture is much more unclear. Suppose the classical capacity is superadditive, then the classical capacity with limited entanglement assistance could retain superadditivity by continuity arguments. If the class…
We analyze deterministic message identification via channels with non-discrete additive white noise and with a noiseless feedback link under both average power and peak power constraints. The identification task is part of Post Shannon Theory. The consideration of communication systems beyond Shannon's approach is useful in order to increase the efficiency of information transmission for certain applications. We propose a coding scheme that first generates infinite common randomness between the sender and the receiver. If the channel has a positive message transmission feedback capacity, for g…
This paper studies an $n$-dimensional additive Gaussian noise channel with a peak-power-constrained input. It is well known that, in this case, when $n=1$ the capacity-achieving input distribution is discrete with finitely many mass points, and when $n>1$ the capacity-achieving input distribution is supported on finitely many concentric shells. However, due to the previous proof technique, neither the exact number of mass points/shells of the optimal input distribution nor a bound on it was available. This paper provides an alternative proof of the finiteness of the number mass points/shells o…

A correlated phase-and-additive-noise (CPAN) mismatched model is developed for wavelength division multiplexing over optical fiber channels governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Both the phase and additive noise processes of the CPAN model are Gauss-Markov whereas previous work uses Wiener phase noise and white additive noise. Second order statistics are derived and lower bounds on the capacity are computed by simulations. The CPAN model characterizes nonlinearities better than existing models in the sense that it achieves better information rates. For example, the model gains 0.35 d…
We study the classical problem of characterizing the channel capacity and its achieving distribution in a generic fashion. We derive a simple relation between three parameters: the input-output function, the input cost function and the noise probability density function, one which dictates the type of the optimal input. In Layman terms we prove that the support of the optimal input is bounded whenever the cost grows faster than a cut-off rate equal to the logarithm of the noise PDF evaluated at the input-output function. Furthermore, we prove a converse statement that says whenever the cost gr…
We show that the uniform distribution minimizes entropy among all one-dimensional symmetric log-concave distributions with fixed variance, as well as various generalizations of this fact to Rényi entropies of orders less than 1 and with moment constraints involving $p$-th absolute moments with $p\leq 2$. As consequences, we give new capacity bounds for additive noise channels with symmetric log-concave noises, as well as for timing channels involving positive signal and noise where the noise has a decreasing log-concave density. In particular, we show that the capacity of an additive noise cha…
This paper investigates the simplification problem in Gaussian Half-Duplex (HD) diamond networks. The goal is to answer the following question: what is the minimum (worst-case) fraction of the total HD capacity that one can always achieve by smartly selecting a subset of $k$ relays, out of the $N$ possible ones? We make progress on this problem for $k=1$ and $k=2$ and show that for $N=k+1, \ k \in \{1,2\}$ at least $\frac{k}{k+1}$ of the total HD capacity is always {approximately (i.e., up to a constant gap)} achieved. Interestingly, and differently from the Full-Duplex (FD) case, the ratio in…
Regular perturbation is applied to the Manakov equation and motivates a generalized correlated phase-and-additive noise model for wavelength-division multiplexing over dual-polarization optical fiber channels. The model includes three hidden Gauss-Markov processes: phase noise, polarization rotation, and additive noise. Particle filtering is used to compute lower bounds on the capacity of multi-carrier communication with frequency-dependent powers and delays. A gain of 0.17 bits/s/Hz/pol in spectral efficiency or 0.8 dB in power efficiency is achieved with respect to existing models at their p…
The capacity of the discrete-time channel affected by both additive Gaussian noise and Wiener phase noise is studied. Novel inner and outer bounds are presented, which differ of at most $6.65$ bits per channel use for all channel parameters. The capacity of this model can be subdivided in three regimes: (i) for large values of the frequency noise variance, the channel behaves similarly to a channel with circularly uniform iid phase noise; (ii) when the frequency noise variance is small, the effects of the additive noise dominate over those of the phase noise, while (iii) for intermediate value…
In two-way channels, each user transmits and receives at the same time. This allows each encoder to interactively adapt the current input to its own message and all previously received signals. Such coding approach can introduce correlation between inputs of different users, since all the users' outputs are correlated by the nature of the channel. However, for some channels, such adaptation in the coding scheme and its induced correlation among users are useless in the sense that they do not help enlarge the capacity region with respect to the standard coding method (where each user encodes on…
The capacity of multiple-input multiple-output additive white Gaussian noise channels is investigated under peak amplitude constraints on the norm of the input vector. New insights on the capacity-achieving input distribution are presented. Furthermore, it is provided an iterative algorithm to numerically evaluate both the information capacity and the optimal input distribution of such channel.
Compound MIMO wiretap channel with double sided uncertainty is considered under channel mean information model. In mean information model, channel variations are centered around its mean value which is fed back to the transmitter. We show that the worst case main channel is anti-parallel to the channel mean information resulting in an overall unit rank channel. Further, the worst eavesdropper channel is shown to be isotropic around its mean information. Accordingly, we provide the capacity achieving beamforming direction. We show that the saddle point property holds under mean information mode…
In this paper, we relate the feedback capacity of parallel additive colored Gaussian noise (ACGN) channels to a variant of the Kalman filter. By doing so, we obtain lower bounds on the feedback capacity of such channels, as well as the corresponding feedback (recursive) coding schemes, which are essentially power allocation policies with feedback, to achieve the bounds. The results are seen to reduce to existing lower bounds in the case of a single ACGN feedback channel, whereas when it comes to parallel additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with feedback, the recursive coding scheme r…
Over-the-air computation (AirComp) enables fast wireless data aggregation at the receiver through concurrent transmission by sensors in the application of Internet-of-Things (IoT). To further improve the performance of AirComp under unfavorable propagation channel conditions, we consider the problem of computation distortion minimization in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided AirComp system. In particular, we take into account an additive bounded uncertainty of the channel state information (CSI) and the total power constraint, and jointly optimize the transceiver (Tx-Rx) and the …
In this paper we introduce a novel performance analysis of the $η$-$μ$ generalized radio fading channels with integer value of the $μ$ fading parameter, i.e. with even number of multipath clusters. This fading model includes other fading models as special cases such as the Nakagami-m, the Hoyt, and the Rayleigh. We obtain novel unified and generic simple closed-form expressions for the average bit error rates and ergodic channel capacity in the additive white generalized Gaussian noise (AWGGN), which includes the additive Gaussian, the gamma, the Laplacian, and the impulsive noise as special c…
Consider a wireless Gaussian network where a source wishes to communicate with a destination with the help of N full-duplex relay nodes. Most practical systems today route information from the source to the destination using the best path that connects them. In this paper, we show that routing can in the worst case result in an unbounded gap from the network capacity - or reversely, physical layer cooperation can offer unbounded gains over routing. More specifically, we show that for $N$-relay Gaussian networks with an arbitrary topology, routing can in the worst case guarantee an approximate …
Unreliable fading wireless channels are the main challenge for strict performance guarantees in mobile communications. Diversity schemes including massive number of antennas, huge spectrum bands and multi-connectivity links are applied to improve the outage performance. The success of these approaches relies heavily on the joint distribution of the underlying fading channels. In this work, we consider the $\varepsilon$-outage capacity of slowly fading wireless diversity channels and provide lower and upper bounds for fixed marginal distributions of the individual channels. This answers the que…
The problem of characterising the zero-error capacity region for multiple access channels even in the noiseless case has remained an open problem for over three decades. Motivated by this challenging question, a recently developed theory of nonstochastic information is applied to characterise the zero-error capacity region for the case of two correlated transmitters. Unlike previous contributions, this analysis does not assume that the blocklength is asymptotically large. Finally, a new notion of nonstochastic information is proposed for a noncooperative problem involving three agents. These r…
