We consider multiple access communication on a binary input additive white Gaussian noise channel using randomly spread code division. For a general class of symmetric distributions for spreading coefficients, in the limit of a large number of users, we prove an upper bound on the capacity, which matches a formula that Tanaka obtained by using the replica method. We also show concentration of various relevant quantities including mutual information, capacity and free energy. The mathematical methods are quite general and allow us to discuss extensions to other multiuser scenarios.
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is the most promising candidate for wideband data access. This is due to the advantage of soft limit on the number of active mobile devices. Many wireless mesh systems impose an upper bound on the BER performance which restricts the increase in number of mobile users. Capacity is further reduced in Multipath Fading Environment (MFE). This paper presents an effective method of improving the capacity of a CDMA based mesh network by managing the transmitted powers of the mobile devices and using MMSE based Multiuser Detection (MUD). The proposed scheme improve…
In Fixed Wireless Applications (FWA), the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is the most promising candidate for wideband data access. The reason is the soft limit on the number of active mobile devices. Many Fixed Wireless Applications impose an upper bound on the BER performance which restricts the increase in number of mobile users. The number of active mobile users or Capacity is further reduced in Multipath Fading Environment (MFE). This paper presents an effective method of improving the capacity of CDMA based Fixed Wireless Networks by using a hybrid power control algorithm. The propo…
In this paper we are going to estimate the sum capacity of a binary CDMA system in presence of the near-far effect. We model the near-far effect as a random variable that is multiplied by the users binary data before entering the noisy channel. We will find a lower bound and a conjectured upper bound for the sum capacity in this situation. All the derivations are in the asymptotic case. Simulations show that especially the lower bound is very tight for typical values Eb/N0 and near-far effect. Also, we exploit our idea in conjunction with the Tanaka's formula [6] which also estimates the sum c…
An interference-limited noise-free CDMA downlink channel operating under a complexity constraint on the receiver is introduced. According to this paradigm, detected bits, obtained by performing hard decisions directly on the channel's matched filter output, must be the same as the transmitted binary inputs. This channel setting, allowing the use of the simplest receiver scheme, seems to be worthless, making reliable communication at any rate impossible. We prove, by adopting statistical mechanics notion, that in the large-system limit such a complexity-constrained CDMA channel gives rise to a …
This paper deals with fading and/or near-far effects with or without power control on the evaluation of the sum capacity of finite dimensional Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems for binary and finite nonbinary inputs and signature matrices. Important results of this paper are that the knowledge of the received power variations due to input power differences, fading and/or near-far effects can significantly improve the sum capacity. Also traditional power controls can not improve the sum capacity; for the asymptotic case, any type of power control on the near-far effects is equivalent…
This paper examines the effect of soft handoff on the uplink user capacity of a CDMA system consisting of a single macrocell in which a single hotspot microcell is embedded. The users of these two base stations operate over the same frequency band. In the soft handoff scenario studied here, both macrocell and microcell base stations serve each system user and the two received copies of a desired user's signal are summed using maximal ratio combining. Exact and approximate analytical methods are developed to compute uplink user capacity. Simulation results demonstrate a 20% increase in user cap…
This paper examines the uplink user capacity in a two-tier code division multiple access (CDMA) system with hotspot microcells when user terminal power is limited and the wireless channel is finitely-dispersive. A finitely-dispersive channel causes variable fading of the signal power at the output of the RAKE receiver. First, a two-cell system composed of one macrocell and one embedded microcell is studied and analytical methods are developed to estimate the user capacity as a function of a dimensionless parameter that depends on the transmit power constraint and cell radius. Next, novel analy…
Recently, new spreading sequences have been proposed to increase the capacity of users. In particular, the Weyl spreading sequences have the larger capacity of users than the Gold codes. This paper shows that the Weyl spreading sequences appear in a bit recovering model and they are orthogonal basis vectors. This result shows the reason why they have the large capacity and that any spreading sequence is expressed as the sum of the Weyl spreading sequences.
We consider the problem of adaptive modulation for wideband DS-CDMA Rayleigh fading channels with imperfect channel state information (CSI). We assume a multidimensional signal subspace spanned by a collection of random spreading codes (multicoding) and study the effects of both the subspace dimension and the probability distribution of the transmitted symbols on the mutual information between the channel input and output in the presence of uncertainty regarding the true state of the channel. We develop approximations for the mutual information as well as both upper and lower bounds on the mut…
In this paper, we obtain a family of lower bounds for the sum capacity of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) channels assuming binary inputs and binary signature codes in the presence of additive noise with an arbitrary distribution. The envelope of this family gives a relatively tight lower bound in terms of the number of users, spreading gain and the noise distribution. The derivation methods for the noiseless and the noisy channels are different but when the noise variance goes to zero, the noisy channel bound approaches the noiseless case. The behavior of the lower bound shows that for s…
In this paper, we explore the mystery of synchronous CDMA as applied to wireless and optical communication systems under very general settings for the user symbols and the signature matrix entries. The channel is modeled with real/complex additive noise of arbitrary distribution. Two problems are addressed. The first problem concerns whether overloaded error free codes exist in the absence of additive noise under these general settings, and if so whether there are any practical optimum decoding algorithms. The second one is about the bounds for the sum channel capacity when user data and signa…
The everlasting bandwidth limitations in wireless communication networks has directed the researchers' thrust toward analyzing the prospect of overloaded Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). In this paper, we have proposed a Genetic Algorithm in search of optimum signature matrices for binary-input synchronous CDMA. The main measure of optimality considered in this paper, is the per-user channel capacity of the overall multiple access system. Our resulting matrices differ from the renowned Welch Bound Equality (WBE) codes, regarding the fact that our attention is specifically aimed at binary,…
The objective of this paper is to design optimal signature matrices for binary inputs. For the determination of such optimal codes, we need certain measures as objective functions. The sum-channel capacity and Bit Error Rate (BER) measures are typical methods for the evaluation of signature matrices. In this paper, in addition to these measures, we use distance criteria to evaluate the optimality of signature matrices. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are used to search the optimum signature matrices based on these three measures (Sum channel capacity, BER and D…
The main objective of this paper is to compare block transmission system performance analytically for Code Divisional Multiple Access (CDMA) modulations in Generalized Multicarrier environment against linear modulation techniques for both single user and multiuser. The effectivity of GMC-CDMA for multiuser will also be judged for different Direct Sequence CDMA (DS-CDMA) such as MC-CDMA, MC-DS-CDMA, MC-SS-CDMA. The analytical comparison will be in terms of computing probability of bit error for frequency selective and slow flat fading channels for different modulation techniques. The Bit Error …
In this paper, new upper and lower bounds are proposed for the capacity of discrete-time Laguerre channel. Laguerre behavior is used to model various types of optical systems and networks such as optical amplifiers, short distance visible light communication systems with direct detection and coherent code division multiple access (CDMA) networks. Bounds are derived for short distance visible light communication systems and coherent CDMA networks. These bounds are separated in three main cases: when both average and peak power constraints are imposed, when peak power constraint is inactive and …
We study the problem of transmission of binary input non-linear functions over a network of mobiles based on CDMA. Motivation for this study comes from the application of using cheap measurement devices installed on personal cell-phones to monitor environmental parameters such as air pollution, temperature and noise level. Our model resembles the MAC model of Nazer and Gastpar except that the encoders are restricted to be CDMA encoders. Unlike the work of Nazer and Gastpar whose main attention is transmission of linear functions, we deal with non-linear functions with binary inputs. A main con…
Communications in dispersive direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) channels suffer from intersymbol and multiple-access interference, which can significantly impair performance. Joint maximum \textit{a posteriori} probability (MAP) equalization and multiuser detection with error control decoding can be used to mitigate this interference and to achieve the optimal bit error rate. Unfortunately, such optimal detection typically requires prohibitive computational complexity. This problem is addressed in this paper through the development of a reduced state trellis search detecti…
The direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) cellular downlink is modeled by a constrained random spatial model involving a fixed number of base stations placed over a finite area with a minimum separation. The analysis is driven by a new closed-form expression for the conditional outage probability at each mobile, where the conditioning is with respect to the network realization. The analysis features a flexible channel model, accounting for path loss, Nakagami fading, and shadowing. By generating many random networks and applying a given resource allocation policy, the distrib…
We consider the CDMA (code-division multiple-access) multi-user detection problem for binary signals and additive white gaussian noise. We propose a spreading sequences scheme based on random sparse signatures, and a detection algorithm based on belief propagation (BP) with linear time complexity. In the new scheme, each user conveys its power onto a finite number of chips l, in the large system limit. We analyze the performances of BP detection and prove that they coincide with the ones of optimal (symbol MAP) detection in the l->\infty limit. In the same limit, we prove that the information …
Two-tier femtocell networks-- comprising a conventional macrocellular network plus embedded femtocell hotspots-- offer an economically viable solution to achieving high cellular user capacity and improved coverage. With universal frequency reuse and DS-CDMA transmission however, the ensuing cross-tier cochannel interference (CCI) causes unacceptable outage probability. This paper develops an uplink capacity analysis and interference avoidance strategy in such a two-tier CDMA network. We evaluate a network-wide area spectral efficiency metric called the \emph{operating contour (OC)} defined as …
In this paper we introduce a new class of codes for over-loaded synchronous wireless and optical CDMA systems which increases the number of users for fixed number of chips without introducing any errors. Equivalently, the chip rate can be reduced for a given number of users, which implies bandwidth reduction for downlink wireless systems. An upper bound for the maximum number of users for a given number of chips is derived. Also, lower and upper bounds for the sum channel capacity of a binary over-loaded CDMA are derived that can predict the existence of such over-loaded codes. We also propose…
The central issue in direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) ad hoc networks is the prevention of a near-far problem. This paper considers two types of guard zones that may be used to control the near-far problem: a fundamental exclusion zone and an additional CSMA guard zone that may be established by the carrier-sense multiple-access (CSMA) protocol. In the exclusion zone, no mobiles are physically present, modeling the minimum physical separation among mobiles that is always present in actual networks. Potentially interfering mobiles beyond a transmitting mobile's exclusion …
Reliable estimation of users' channels and data in rapidly time varying fading environments is a very challenging task of multiuser detection (MUD) techniques that promise impressive capacity gains for interference limited systems such as non-orthogonal CDMA and spatial multiplexing MIMO based LTE. This paper analyzes relative channel estimation error performances of conventional single user and multiuser receivers for an uplink of DS-CDMA and shows their impact on output signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) performances. Mean squared error (MSE) of channel estimation and achievable s…
New sufficient conditions for determining in closed form the capacity region of point-to-point memoryless two-way channels (TWCs) are derived. The proposed conditions not only relax Shannon's condition which can identify only TWCs with a certain symmetry property but also generalize other existing results. Examples are given to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed conditions.
Channel capacity bounds are derived for a point-to-point indoor visible light communications (VLC) system with signal-dependent Gaussian noise. Considering both illumination and communication, the non-negative input of VLC is constrained by peak and average optical intensity constraints. Two scenarios are taken into account: one scenario has both average and peak optical intensity constraints, and the other scenario has only average optical intensity constraint. For both two scenarios, we derive closed-from expressions of capacity lower and upper bounds. Specifically, the capacity lower bound …
An outer bound to the capacity region of the two-receiver discrete memoryless broadcast channel is given. The outer bound is tight for all cases where the capacity region is known. When specialized to the case of no common information, this outer bound is contained in the Korner-Marton outer bound. This containment is shown to be strict for the binary skew-symmetric broadcast channel. Thus, this outer bound is in general tighter than all other known outer bounds on the discrete memoryless broadcast channel.
This paper shows that the logarithm of the epsilon-error capacity (average error probability) for n uses of a discrete memoryless channel is upper bounded by the normal approximation plus a third-order term that does not exceed 1/2 log n + O(1) if the epsilon-dispersion of the channel is positive. This matches a lower bound by Y. Polyanskiy (2010) for discrete memoryless channels with positive reverse dispersion. If the epsilon-dispersion vanishes, the logarithm of the epsilon-error capacity is upper bounded by the n times the capacity plus a constant term except for a small class of DMCs and …
In this paper, the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, affected by time-varying Wiener phase noise is investigated. Tight upper and lower bounds on the capacity of this channel are developed. The upper bound is obtained by using the duality approach, and considering a specific distribution over the output of the channel. In order to lower-bound the capacity, first a family of capacity-achieving input distributions is found by solving a functional optimization of the channel mutual information. Then, lower bounds on the capacity are obtained by drawing samples from the…
We develop a new upper bound on the capacity of the relay channel that is tighter than previously known upper bounds. This upper bound is proved using traditional weak converse techniques involving mutual information inequalities and Gallager-type explicit identification of auxiliary random variables. We show that the new upper bound is strictly tighter than all previous bounds for the Gaussian relay channel with non-zero channel gains. When specialized to the relay channel with orthogonal receiver components, the bound resolves a conjecture by Kim on a class of deterministic relay channels. W…
For the class of the memoryless binary-input channels which are not necessarily symmetric, we derive tight bounds on the capacity in terms of the Bhattacharyya parameter. As it turns out, the bounds derived under the symmetric channel assumption in [1] are valid for the general case as well.
In this paper, we propose a new method to bound the capacity of checkerboard codes on the hexagonal lattice. This produces rigorous bounds that are tighter than those commonly known.
We consider the communication capacity of wireline networks for a two-unicast traffic pattern. The network has two sources and two destinations with each source communicating a message to its own destination, subject to the capacity constraints on the directed edges of the network. We propose a simple outer bound for the problem that we call the Generalized Network Sharing (GNS) bound. We show this bound is the tightest edge-cut bound for two-unicast networks and is tight in several bottleneck cases, though it is not tight in general. We also show that the problem of computing the GNS bound is…
In physical-layer security, one of the most fundamental issues is the secrecy capacity. The objective of this paper is to determine the secrecy capacity for an indoor visible light communication system consisting of a transmitter, a legitimate receiver and an eavesdropping receiver. In such a system, both signal-independent and signal-dependent Gaussian noises are considered. Under non-negativity and average optical intensity constraints, lower and upper secrecy capacity bounds are first derived by the variational method, the dual expression of the secrecy capacity, and the concept of "the opt…
In this work we improve on the bounds presented by Li&Li for network coding gain in the undirected case. A tightened bound for the undirected multicast problem with three terminals is derived. An interesting result shows that with fractional routing, routing throughput can achieve at least 75% of the coding throughput. A tighter bound for the general multicast problem with any number of terminals shows that coding gain is strictly less than 2. Our derived bound depends on the number of terminals in the multicast network and approaches 2 for arbitrarily large number of terminals.
This paper studies the capacity of the two-user intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) interference channel (IC), which is relevant in the context of multi-user optical wireless communications. Despite some known single-letter capacity characterizations for general discrete-memoryless ICs, a computable capacity expression for the IM/DD IC is missing. In this paper, we provide tight and easily computable inner and outer bounds for a general two-user IM/DD IC under peak and average optical intensity constraints. The bounds enable characterizing the asymptotic sum-rate capacity in the stro…
In this paper, we present a new technique to obtain upper bounds on undirected unicast network information capacity. Using this technique, we characterize an upper bound, called partition bound, on the symmetric rate of information flow in undirected unicast networks and give an algorithm to compute it. Two classes of networks are presented for which the bound is tight and the capacity is achievable by routing thus confirming the undirected unicast conjecture for these classes of networks. We also show that the bound can be loose in general and present an approach to tighten it.
This article studies the zero-error feedback capacity of {\em causal} discrete channels with memory. First, by extending the classical zero-error feedback capacity concept, a new notion of {\em uniform zero-error feedback capacity} $ C_{0f} $ for such channels is introduced. Using this notion a tight condition for {bounded} stabilization of unstable {noisy} linear systems via causal channels is obtained, assuming no {channel} state information at either end of the channel.
We define capacity for group testing problems and deduce bounds for the capacity of a variety of noisy models, based on the capacity of equivalent noisy communication channels. For noiseless adaptive group testing we prove an information-theoretic lower bound which tightens a bound of Chan et al. This can be combined with a performance analysis of a version of Hwang's adaptive group testing algorithm, in order to deduce the capacity of noiseless and erasure group testing models.
In this paper, we first present an outer bound for a general interference channel with a cognitive relay, i.e., a relay that has non-causal knowledge of both independent messages transmitted in the interference channel. This outer bound reduces to the capacity region of the deterministic broadcast channel and of the deterministic cognitive interference channel through nulling of certain channel inputs. It does not, however, reduce to that of certain deterministic interference channels for which capacity is known. As such, we subsequently tighten the bound for channels whose outputs satisfy an …
We consider the secure transmission in ergodic fast-Rayleigh fading multiple-input single-output single-antennaeavesdropper (MISOSE) wiretap channels. We assume that the statistics of both the legitimate and eavesdropper channels is the only available channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). By introducing a new secrecy capacity upper bound, we prove that the secrecy capacity is achieved by Gaussian input without prefixing. To attain this, we form another MISOSE channel for upper-bounding, and tighten the bound by finding the worst correlations between the legitimate and eavesdropp…
Csiszar and Narayan[3] defined the notion of secret key capacity for multiple terminals, characterized it as a linear program with Slepian-Wolf constraints of the related source coding problem of communication for omniscience, and upper bounded it by some information divergence expression from the joint to the product distribution of the private observations. This paper proves that the bound is tight for the important case when all users are active, using the polymatroidal structure[6] underlying the source coding problem. When some users are not active, the bound may not be tight. This paper …
We consider the capacity of memoryless finite-state multiple access channel (FS-MAC) with causal asymmetric noisy state information available at both transmitters and complete state information available at the receiver. Single letter inner and outer bounds are provided for the capacity of such channels when the state process is independent and identically distributed. The outer bound is attained by observing that the proposed inner bound is tight for the sum-rate capacity.
Most diffusion based molecular channels suffer from low information capacity due to the structure of the diffusion environment. To address this issue, this paper studies the capacity of the diffusion based molecular communication by exploiting both time and concentration level of the released molecules for information transfer. The transmitter releases molecules in one of the sub-intervals with a level of concentration both determined by input data, hereby applying joint time and concentration (JTAC) modulation. The observation time, at the receiver, which is equal to symbol period, is divided…
We derive inner and outer bounds on the capacity region for a class of three-user partially connected interference channels. We focus on the impact of topology, interference alignment, and interplay between interference and noise. The representative channels we consider are the ones that have clear interference alignment gain. For these channels, Z-channel type outer bounds are tight to within a constant gap from capacity. We present near-optimal achievable schemes based on rate-splitting and lattice alignment.
This work considers the corner points of the capacity region of a two-user Gaussian interference channel (GIC). In a two-user GIC, the rate pairs where one user transmits its data at the single-user capacity (without interference), and the other at the largest rate for which reliable communication is still possible are called corner points. This paper relies on existing outer bounds on the capacity region of a two-user GIC that are used to derive informative bounds on the corner points of the capacity region. The new bounds refer to a weak two-user GIC (i.e., when both cross-link gains in stan…
This paper investigates the capacity region of the three-receiver AWGN broadcast channel where the receivers (i) have private-message requests and (ii) may know some of the messages requested by other receivers as side information. We first classify all 64 possible side information configurations into eight groups, each consisting of eight members. We next construct transmission schemes, and derive new inner and outer bounds for the groups. This establishes the capacity region for 52 out of 64 possible side information configurations. For six groups (i.e., groups 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 in our te…
In the multiterminal source model of Csisz$\text{á}$r and Narayan, the communication complexity, $R_{\text{SK}}$, for secret key (SK) generation is the minimum rate of communication required to achieve SK capacity. An obvious upper bound to $R_{\text{SK}}$ is given by $R_{\text{CO}}$, which is the minimum rate of communication required for \emph{omniscience}. In this paper we derive a better upper bound to $R_{\text{SK}}$ for the hypergraphical source model, which is a special instance of the multiterminal source model. The upper bound is based on the idea of fractional removal of hyperedges. …
We consider the discrete memoryless symmetric primitive relay channel, where, a source $X$ wants to send information to a destination $Y$ with the help of a relay $Z$ and the relay can communicate to the destination via an error-free digital link of rate $R_0$, while $Y$ and $Z$ are conditionally independent and identically distributed given $X$. We develop two new upper bounds on the capacity of this channel that are tighter than existing bounds, including the celebrated cut-set bound. Our approach significantly deviates from the standard information-theoretic approach for proving upper bound…
We consider a public multi-user information embedding (watermarking) system in which two messages (watermarks) are independently embedded into two correlated covertexts and are transmitted through a multiple-access attack channel. The tradeoff between the achievable embedding rates and the average distortions for the two embedders is studied. For given distortion levels, inner and outer bounds for the embedding capacity region are obtained in single-letter form. Tighter bounds are also given for independent covertexts.
A random access scheme for the collision channel without feedback is proposed. The scheme is based on erasure correcting codes for the recovery of packet segments that are lost in collisions, and on successive interference cancellation for resolving collisions. The proposed protocol achieves reliable communication in the asymptotic setting and attains capacities close to 1 [packets/slot]. A capacity bound as a function of the overall rate of the scheme is derived, and code distributions tightly approaching the bound developed.
This paper provides a numerical framework for computing the achievable rate region of memoryless multiple access channel (MAC) with a continuous alphabet from data. In particular, we use recent results on variational lower bounds on mutual information and KL-divergence to compute the boundaries of the rate region of MAC using a set of functions parameterized by neural networks. Our method relies on a variational lower bound on KL-divergence and an upper bound on KL-divergence based on the f-divergence inequalities. Unlike previous work, which computes an estimate on mutual information, which i…
A multiple access channel and a point-to-point channel sharing the same medium for communications are considered. We obtain an outer bound for the capacity region of this setup, and we show that this outer bound is achievable in some cases. These cases are mainly when interference is strong or very strong. A sum capacity upper bound is also obtained, which is nearly tight if the interference power at the receivers is low. In this case, using Gaussian codes and treating interference as noise achieves a sum rate close to the upper bound.
In this paper, we would like to study the common randomness (CR) capacity of intertwined two-way channels, namely those whose marginal channel transition probabilities depends also on the signal they transmit. We bring a few special settings and provide constructive schemes with which the two nodes can agree upon a common randomness. We then provide an outer bound on the CR capacity of intertwined receiver-decomposable (RD) two-way channel and will provide a bound on the cardinality of the available auxiliary variables. We will also show this outer bound is bounded above by Venkatesan-Ananthar…
This paper provides new inner and outer bounds on the capacity region of optical intensity multiple access channel (OIMAC) with per-user average or peak power constraint. For the average power constrained OIMAC, our bounds at high power are asymptotically tight, thereby characterizing the asymptotic capacity region. The bounds are extended to K-user OIMAC with average power constraint without loss of asymptotic optimality. For the peak power constrained OIMAC, at high power, we bound the asymptotic capacity region to within 0.09 bits, and determine the asymptotic capacity region in the symmetr…
In this paper, we study the coding delay and the average coding delay of random linear network codes (dense codes) over line networks with deterministic regular and Poisson transmission schedules. We consider both lossless networks and networks with Bernoulli losses. The upper bounds derived in this paper, which are in some cases more general, and in some other cases tighter, than the existing bounds, provide a more clear picture of the speed of convergence of dense codes to the min-cut capacity of line networks.
