In this work we improve on the bounds presented by Li&Li for network coding gain in the undirected case. A tightened bound for the undirected multicast problem with three terminals is derived. An interesting result shows that with fractional routing, routing throughput can achieve at least 75% of the coding throughput. A tighter bound for the general multicast problem with any number of terminals shows that coding gain is strictly less than 2. Our derived bound depends on the number of terminals in the multicast network and approaches 2 for arbitrarily large number of terminals.
The edge-removal problem asks whether the removal of a $λ$-capacity edge from a given network can decrease the communication rate between source-terminal pairs by more than $λ$. In this short manuscript, we prove that for undirected networks, removing a $λ$-capacity edge decreases the rate by $O(λ)$. Through previously known reductive arguments, here newly applied to undirected networks, our result implies that the zero-error capacity region of an undirected network equals its vanishing-error capacity region. Whether it is possible to prove similar results for directed networks remains an open…
In this paper, we present a new technique to obtain upper bounds on undirected unicast network information capacity. Using this technique, we characterize an upper bound, called partition bound, on the symmetric rate of information flow in undirected unicast networks and give an algorithm to compute it. Two classes of networks are presented for which the bound is tight and the capacity is achievable by routing thus confirming the undirected unicast conjecture for these classes of networks. We also show that the bound can be loose in general and present an approach to tighten it.
We consider a directed acyclic network with multiple sources and multiple terminals where each terminal is interested in decoding the sum of independent sources generated at the source nodes. We describe a procedure whereby a simple undirected graph can be used to construct such a sum-network and demonstrate an upper bound on its computation rate. Furthermore, we show sufficient conditions for the construction of a linear network code that achieves this upper bound. Our procedure allows us to construct sum-networks that have any arbitrary computation rate $\frac{p}{q}$ (where $p,q$ are non-neg…
One of the important unsolved problems in information theory is the conjecture that network coding has no rate benefit over routing in undirected unicast networks. Three known bounds on the symmetric rate in undirected unicast information networks are the sparsest cut, the LP bound and the partition bound. In this paper, we present three results on the partition bound. We show that the decision version problem of computing the partition bound is NP-complete. We give complete proofs of optimal routing schemes for two classes of networks that attain the partition bound. Recently, the conjecture …
The routing capacity region of networks with multiple unicast sessions can be characterized using Farkas' lemma as an infinite set of linear inequalities. In this paper this result is sharpened by exploiting properties of the solution satisfied by each rate-tuple on the boundary of the capacity region, and a finite description of the routing capacity region which depends on network parameters is offered. For the special case of undirected ring networks additional results on the complexity of the description are provided.
A classical result in undirected wireline networks is the near optimality of routing (flow) for multiple-unicast traffic (multiple sources communicating independent messages to multiple destinations): the min cut upper bound is within a logarithmic factor of the number of sources of the max flow. In this paper we "extend" the wireline result to the wireless context. Our main result is the approximate optimality of a simple layering principle: {\em local physical-layer schemes combined with global routing}. We use the {\em reciprocity} of the wireless channel critically in this result. Our form…
We consider network coding rates for directed and undirected $k$-pairs networks. For directed networks, meagerness is known to be an upper bound on network coding rates. We show that network coding rate can be $Θ(|V|)$ multiplicative factor smaller than meagerness. For the undirected case, we show some progress in the direction of the $k$-pairs conjecture.
While it is known that using network coding can significantly improve the throughput of directed networks, it is a notorious open problem whether coding yields any advantage over the multicommodity flow (MCF) rate in undirected networks. It was conjectured by Li and Li (2004) that the answer is "no". In this paper we show that even a small advantage over MCF can be amplified to yield a near-maximum possible gap. We prove that any undirected network with $k$ source-sink pairs that exhibits a $(1+\varepsilon)$ gap between its MCF rate and its network coding rate can be used to construct a family…
We consider the problem of information aggregation in sensor networks, where one is interested in computing a function of the sensor measurements. We allow for block processing and study in-network function computation in directed graphs and undirected graphs. We study how the structure of the function affects the encoding strategies, and the effect of interactive information exchange. We begin by considering a directed graph G = (V, E) on the sensor nodes, where the goal is to determine the optimal encoders on each edge which achieve function computation at the collector node. Our goal is to …
In this paper, the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, affected by time-varying Wiener phase noise is investigated. Tight upper and lower bounds on the capacity of this channel are developed. The upper bound is obtained by using the duality approach, and considering a specific distribution over the output of the channel. In order to lower-bound the capacity, first a family of capacity-achieving input distributions is found by solving a functional optimization of the channel mutual information. Then, lower bounds on the capacity are obtained by drawing samples from the…
Channel symmetry properties that imply the tightness of Shannon's random coding inner bound have recently been used to determine the capacity region of discrete-memoryless two-way channels (DM-TWCs). For channels without such symmetry properties, outer bounds are often needed to estimate the capacity region. However, validating symmetry conditions and/or evaluating non-trivial outer bounds are computationally demanding, especially for channels with large input and output alphabets. In this paper, three easy-to-check conditions that identify DM-TWCs with no such symmetry properties as well as a…
This paper provides new inner and outer bounds on the capacity region of optical intensity multiple access channel (OIMAC) with per-user average or peak power constraint. For the average power constrained OIMAC, our bounds at high power are asymptotically tight, thereby characterizing the asymptotic capacity region. The bounds are extended to K-user OIMAC with average power constraint without loss of asymptotic optimality. For the peak power constrained OIMAC, at high power, we bound the asymptotic capacity region to within 0.09 bits, and determine the asymptotic capacity region in the symmetr…
The capacity-achieving input distribution of the discrete-time, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with an amplitude constraint is discrete and seems difficult to characterize explicitly. A dual capacity expression is used to derive analytic capacity upper bounds for scalar and vector AWGN channels. The scalar bound improves on McKellips' bound and is within 0.1 bits of capacity for all signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The two-dimensional bound is within 0.15 bits of capacity provably up to 4.5 dB, and numerical evidence suggests a similar gap for all SNRs.
This paper slightly improves the upper bound in Thangaraj et al. for the capacity of the amplitude-constrained scalar AWGN channel. This improvement makes the upper bound within 0.002 bits of the capacity for $\frac{E_b}{N_0}\leq 2.5$ dB.
In this paper, we study upper bounds on the sum capacity of the downlink multicell processing model with finite backhaul capacity for the simple case of 2 base stations and 2 mobile users. It is modelled as a two-user multiple access diamond channel. It consists of a first hop from the central processor to the base stations via orthogonal links of finite capacity, and the second hop from the base stations to the mobile users via a Gaussian interference channel. The converse is derived using the converse tools of the multiple access diamond channel and that of the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channe…
Channel capacity bounds are derived for a point-to-point indoor visible light communications (VLC) system with signal-dependent Gaussian noise. Considering both illumination and communication, the non-negative input of VLC is constrained by peak and average optical intensity constraints. Two scenarios are taken into account: one scenario has both average and peak optical intensity constraints, and the other scenario has only average optical intensity constraint. For both two scenarios, we derive closed-from expressions of capacity lower and upper bounds. Specifically, the capacity lower bound …
Establishing the capacity region of a Gaussian interference network is an open problem in information theory. Recent progress on this problem has led to the characterization of the capacity region of a general two user Gaussian interference channel within one bit. In this paper, we develop new, improved outer bounds on the capacity region. Using these bounds, we show that treating interference as noise achieves the sum capacity of the two user Gaussian interference channel in a low interference regime, where the interference parameters are below certain thresholds. We then generalize our techn…
For the class of the memoryless binary-input channels which are not necessarily symmetric, we derive tight bounds on the capacity in terms of the Bhattacharyya parameter. As it turns out, the bounds derived under the symmetric channel assumption in [1] are valid for the general case as well.
We revisit Shannon's problem of bounding the capacity of bandlimited Gaussian channel (BLGC) with peak power constraint, and extend the problem to the peak-to-average-power-ratio (PAPR) constrained case. By lower bounding the achievable information rate of pulse amplitude modulation with independent and identically distributed input under a PAPR constraint, we obtain a general capacity lower bound with respect to the shaping pulse. We then evaluate and optimize the lower bound by employing some parametric pulses, thereby improving the best existing result. Following Shannon's approach, capacit…
Recent outer bounds on the capacity region of Gaussian interference channels are generalized to $m$-user channels with $m>2$ and asymmetric powers and crosstalk coefficients. The bounds are again shown to give the sum-rate capacity for Gaussian interference channels with low powers and crosstalk coefficients. The capacity is achieved by using single-user detection at each receiver, i.e., treating the interference as noise incurs no loss in performance.
An outer bound to the capacity region of the two-receiver discrete memoryless broadcast channel is given. The outer bound is tight for all cases where the capacity region is known. When specialized to the case of no common information, this outer bound is contained in the Korner-Marton outer bound. This containment is shown to be strict for the binary skew-symmetric broadcast channel. Thus, this outer bound is in general tighter than all other known outer bounds on the discrete memoryless broadcast channel.
We derive an upper bound on the capacity of non-binary deletion channels. Although binary deletion channels have received significant attention over the years, and many upper and lower bounds on their capacity have been derived, such studies for the non-binary case are largely missing. The state of the art is the following: as a trivial upper bound, capacity of an erasure channel with the same input alphabet as the deletion channel can be used, and as a lower bound the results by Diggavi and Grossglauser are available. In this paper, we derive the first non-trivial non-binary deletion channel …
A class of diamond networks is studied where the broadcast component is orthogonal and modeled by two independent bit-pipes. New upper and lower bounds on the capacity are derived. The proof technique for the upper bound generalizes bounding techniques of Ozarow for the Gaussian multiple description problem (1981) and Kang and Liu for the Gaussian diamond network (2011). The lower bound is based on Marton's coding technique and superposition coding. The bounds are evaluated for Gaussian and binary adder multiple access channels (MACs). For Gaussian MACs, both the lower and upper bounds strengt…
The downlink of symmetric Cloud Radio Access Networks (C-RANs) with multiple relays and a single receiver is studied. Lower and upper bounds are derived on the capacity. The lower bound is achieved by Marton's coding which facilitates dependence among the multiple-access channel inputs. The upper bound uses Ozarow's technique to augment the system with an auxiliary random variable. The bounds are studied over scalar Gaussian C-RANs and are shown to meet and characterize the capacity for interesting regimes of operation.
Binary-input memoryless channels with a runlength constrained input are considered. Upper bounds to the capacity of such noisy runlength constrained channels are derived using the dual capacity method with Markov test distributions satisfying the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions for the capacity-achieving output distribution. Simplified algebraic characterizations of the bounds are presented for the binary erasure channel (BEC) and the binary symmetric channel (BSC). These upper bounds are very close to achievable rates, and improve upon previously known feedback-based bounds for a large ra…
The fact that the results for 2-receiver broadcast channels (BCs) are not generalized to the 3-receiver ones is of information theoretical importance. In this paper we study two classes of discrete memoryless BCs with non-causal side information (SI), i.e. multilevel BC (MBC) and 3-receiver less noisy BC. First, we obtain an achievable rate region and a capacity outer bound for the MBC. Second, we prove a special capacity region for the 3-receiver less noisy BC. Third, the obtained special capacity region for the 3-receiver less noisy BC is extended to continuous alphabet fading Gaussian versi…
Capacity bounds for waveform channels under square-law detection of time-limited complex-valued signals are derived. The upper bound is the capacity of the channel under (complex-valued) coherent detection. The lower bound is one bit less, per dimension, than the upper bound.
We consider an additive Gaussian channel with additive Gaussian noise feedback. We derive an upper bound on the n-block capacity (defined by Cover [1]). It is shown that this upper bound can be obtained by solving a convex optimization problem. With stationarity assumptions on Gaussian noise processes, we characterize the limit of the n-block upper bound and prove that this limit is the upper bound of the noisy feedback (shannon) capacity.
In physical-layer security, one of the most fundamental issues is the secrecy capacity. The objective of this paper is to determine the secrecy capacity for an indoor visible light communication system consisting of a transmitter, a legitimate receiver and an eavesdropping receiver. In such a system, both signal-independent and signal-dependent Gaussian noises are considered. Under non-negativity and average optical intensity constraints, lower and upper secrecy capacity bounds are first derived by the variational method, the dual expression of the secrecy capacity, and the concept of "the opt…
We study a nonlinear fiber optical channel impaired by cross-phase modulation and dispersion from the viewpoint of an interference channel. We characterize an outer bound on the capacity region of simultaneously achievable rate pairs, assuming a two-user perturbative channel model.
A continuous-time Wiener phase noise channel with an integrate-and-dump multi-sample receiver is studied. A lower bound to the capacity with an average input power constraint is derived, and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis is performed. The capacity pre-log depends on the oversampling factor, and amplitude and phase modulation do not equally contribute to capacity at high SNR.
In this paper, we introduce a model of a distributed storage system that is locally recoverable from any single server failure. Unlike the usual local recovery model of codes for distributed storage, this model accounts for the fact that each server or storage node in a network is connectible to only some, and not all other, nodes. This may happen for reasons such as physical separation, inhomogeneity in storage platforms etc. We estimate the storage capacity of both undirected and directed networks under this model and propose some constructive schemes. From a coding theory point of view, we …
A method for achieving the continuous-space electromagnetic channel capacity bound using loaded N-port structures is described. It is relevant for the design of compact multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas that can achieve channel capacity bounds when constrained by size. The method is not restricted to a specific antenna configuration and a closed-form expression for the channel capacity limits are provided with various constraints. Furthermore, using loaded N-port structures to represent arbitrary antenna geometries, an efficient optimization approach is proposed for finding the op…
In this paper, we propose an upper bound on the minimum Bhattacharyya distance of codes for channels with a zero-error capacity. The bound is obtained by combining an extension of the Elias bound introduced by Blahut, with an extension of a bound previously introduced by the author, which builds upon ideas of Gallager, Lovász and Marton.
We prove an upper bound on the Shannon capacity of a graph via a linear programming variation. We show that our bound can outperform both the Lovász theta number and the Haemers minimum rank bound. As a by-product, we also obtain a new upper bound on the broadcast rate of Index Coding.
A novel technique to optimize the input distribution and compute a lower bound for the capacity of the nonlinear optical fiber channel is proposed. The technique improves previous bounds obtained with the additive white Gaussian noise decoding metric.
In this note we study Shannon capacity of channels in the context of classical Ramsey numbers. We overview some of the results on capacity of noisy channels modelled by graphs, and how some constructions may contribute to our knowledge of this capacity. We present an improvement to the constructions by Abbott and Song and thus establish new lower bounds for a special type of multicolor Ramsey numbers. We prove that our construction implies that the supremum of the Shannon capacity over all graphs with independence number 2 cannot be achieved by any finite graph power. This can be generalized t…
Previous studies of connectivity in wireless networks have focused on undirected geometric graphs. More sophisticated models such as Signal-to-Interference-and-Noise-Ratio (SINR) model, however, usually leads to directed graphs. In this paper, we study percolation processes in wireless networks modelled by directed SINR graphs. We first investigate interference-free networks, where we define four types of phase transitions and show that they take place at the same time. By coupling the directed SINR graph with two other undirected SINR graphs, we further obtain analytical upper and lower bound…
