Establishing the capacity region of a Gaussian interference network is an open problem in information theory. Recent progress on this problem has led to the characterization of the capacity region of a general two user Gaussian interference channel within one bit. In this paper, we develop new, improved outer bounds on the capacity region. Using these bounds, we show that treating interference as noise achieves the sum capacity of the two user Gaussian interference channel in a low interference regime, where the interference parameters are below certain thresholds. We then generalize our techniques and results to Gaussian interference networks with more than two users. In particular, we demonstrate that the total interference threshold, below which treating interference as noise achieves the sum capacity, increases with the number of users.
Channel symmetry properties that imply the tightness of Shannon's random coding inner bound have recently been used to determine the capacity region of discrete-memoryless two-way channels (DM-TWCs). For channels without such symmetry properties, outer bounds are often needed to estimate the capacity region. However, validating symmetry conditions and/or evaluating non-trivial outer bounds are computationally demanding, especially for channels with large input and output alphabets. In this paper, three easy-to-check conditions that identify DM-TWCs with no such symmetry properties as well as a…
We study a nonlinear fiber optical channel impaired by cross-phase modulation and dispersion from the viewpoint of an interference channel. We characterize an outer bound on the capacity region of simultaneously achievable rate pairs, assuming a two-user perturbative channel model.
In this paper, capacity bounds for the two-user Interference Channel (IC) with cooperative receivers via conferencing links of finite capacities is investigated. The capacity results known for this communication scenario are limited to a very few special cases of the one-sided IC. One of the major challenges in analyzing such cooperative networks is how to establish efficient capacity outer bounds for them. In this paper, by applying new techniques, novel capacity outer bounds are presented for the ICs with conferencing users. Using the outer bounds, several new capacity results are proved for…
We study the capacity region of the two-user Binary Fading (or Erasure) Interference Channel where the transmitters have no knowledge of the channel state information. We develop new inner-bounds and outer-bounds for this problem. We identify three regimes based on the channel parameters: weak, moderate, and strong interference regimes. Interestingly, this is similar to the generalized degrees of freedom of the two-user Gaussian interference channel where transmitters have perfect channel knowledge. We show that for the weak interference regime, treating interference as erasure is optimal whil…
This paper studies a layered erasure model for two-user interference channels, which can be viewed as a simplified version of Gaussian fading interference channel. It is assumed that channel state information~(CSI) is only available at receivers but not at transmitters. Under such assumption, an outer bound is derived for the capacity region of such interference channel. The new outer bound is tight in many circumstances. For the remaining open cases, the outer bound extends previous results.
We derive inner and outer bounds on the capacity region for a class of three-user partially connected interference channels. We focus on the impact of topology, interference alignment, and interplay between interference and noise. The representative channels we consider are the ones that have clear interference alignment gain. For these channels, Z-channel type outer bounds are tight to within a constant gap from capacity. We present near-optimal achievable schemes based on rate-splitting and lattice alignment.
The discrete-time Wiener phase noise channel with an integrate-and-dump multi-sample receiver is studied. A novel outer bound on the capacity with an average input power constraint is derived as a function of the oversampling factor. This outer bound yields the degrees of freedom for the scenario in which the oversampling factor grows with the transmit power $P$ as $P^α$. The result shows, perhaps surprisingly, that the largest pre-log that can be attained with phase modulation at high signal-to-noise ratio is at most $1/4$.
This paper derives outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region of the 2-user Z interference channel (Z-IC) with rate-limited unidirectional cooperation between the transmitters. First, the model is studied under the linear deterministic setting. The derivation of the outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region involves careful selection of the side information to be provided to the receivers and using the secrecy constraints at the receivers in a judicious manner. To this end, a novel partitioning of the encoded messages and outputs is proposed for the deterministic model based on the strength…

This paper studies a two-user state-dependent Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) with state noncausally known at one encoder. Two scenarios are considered: i) each user wishes to communicate an independent message to the common receiver, and ii) the two encoders send a common message to the receiver and the non-cognitive encoder (i.e., the encoder that does not know the state) sends an independent individual message (this model is also known as the MAC with degraded message sets). For both scenarios, new outer bounds on the capacity region are derived, which improve uniformly over the best…
