New upper bounds on the sum capacity of the two-user Gaussian interference channel are derived. Using these bounds, it is shown that treating interference as noise achieves the sum capacity if the interference levels are below certain thresholds.
Establishing the capacity region of a Gaussian interference network is an open problem in information theory. Recent progress on this problem has led to the characterization of the capacity region of a general two user Gaussian interference channel within one bit. In this paper, we develop new, improved outer bounds on the capacity region. Using these bounds, we show that treating interference as noise achieves the sum capacity of the two user Gaussian interference channel in a low interference regime, where the interference parameters are below certain thresholds. We then generalize our techn…
The sum capacity of a class of discrete memoryless interference channels is determined. This class of channels is defined analogous to the Gaussian Z-interference channel with weak interference; as a result, the sum capacity is achieved by letting the transceiver pair subject to the interference communicates at a rate such that its message can be decoded at the unintended receiver using single user detection. Moreover, this class of discrete memoryless interference channels is equivalent in capacity region to certain discrete degraded interference channels. This allows the construction of a ca…
The capacity regions of multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian Z-interference channels are established for the very strong interference and aligned strong interference cases. The sum-rate capacity of such channels is established under noisy interference. These results generalize known results for scalar Gaussian Z-interference channels.
An interference channel is said to have strong interference if for all input distributions, the receivers can fully decode the interference. This definition of strong interference applies to discrete memoryless, scalar and vector Gaussian interference channels. However, there exist vector Gaussian interference channels that may not satisfy the strong interference condition but for which the capacity can still be achieved by jointly decoding the signal and the interference. This kind of interference is called generally strong interference. Sufficient conditions for a vector Gaussian interferenc…
The capacity region of a multiple-input-multiple-output interference channel (MIMO IC) where the channel matrices are square and invertible is studied. The capacity region for strong interference is established where the definition of strong interference parallels that of scalar channels. Moreover, the sum-rate capacity for Z interference, noisy interference, and mixed interference is established. These results generalize known results for the scalar Gaussian IC.
We consider the 3-user Gaussian interference channel and provide an outer bound on its capacity region. Under some conditions, which we call the mixed strong-very strong interference conditions, this outer bound is achievable. These conditions correspond to the case where at each receiver, one transmitter is causing strong interference and the other is causing very strong interference. Therefore, we characterize the capacity region of the 3-user interference channel with mixed strong-very strong interference.
This paper studies the capacity of a class of discrete memoryless interference channels where interference is defined analogous to that of Gaussian interference channel with one-sided weak interference. The sum-rate capacity of this class of channels is determined. As with the Gaussian case, the sum-rate capacity is achieved by letting the transceiver pair subject to interference communicate at a rate such that its message can be decoded at the unintended receiver using single user detection. It is also established that this class of discrete memoryless interference channels is equivalent in c…
New sufficient conditions for a vector Gaussian interference channel to achieve the sum-rate capacity by treating interference as noise are derived, which generalize the existing results. More concise conditions for multiple-input-single-output, and single-input-multiple-output scenarios are obtained.
A new outer bound on the capacity region of Gaussian interference channels is developed. The bound combines and improves existing genie-aided methods and is shown to give the sum-rate capacity for noisy interference as defined in this paper. Specifically, it is shown that if the channel coefficients and power constraints satisfy a simple condition then single-user detection at each receiver is sum-rate optimal, i.e., treating the interference as noise incurs no loss in performance. This is the first concrete (finite signal-to-noise ratio) capacity result for the Gaussian interference channel w…
The capacity region of the one-sided Gaussian interference channel is established in the weak interference regime. To characterize this region, a new representation of the Han-Kobayashi inner bound for the one-sided Gaussian interference channel is first given. Next, a new outer bound on the capacity region of this channel is introduced which is tight in the weak interference regime. This is the first capacity region for any variant of the interference channel in the weak interference regime.
The capacity regions of vector, or multiple-input multiple-output, Gaussian interference channels are established for very strong interference and aligned strong interference. Furthermore, the sum-rate capacities are established for Z interference, noisy interference, and mixed (aligned weak/intermediate and aligned strong) interference. These results generalize known results for scalar Gaussian interference channels.
The cognitive interference channel models cognitive overlay radio systems, where cognitive radios overhear the transmission of neighboring nodes. Capacity for this channel is not known in general. For the Gaussian case capacity is known in three regimes, usually denoted as the "weak interference", "very strong interference" and "primary decodes cognitive". This paper provides a new capacity result, based on rate-splitting of the primary user's message into a public and private part and that generalizes the capacity results in the "very strong interference" and "primary decodes cognitive" regim…
The interference channel with a cognitive relay consists of a classical interference channel with two sourcedestination pairs and with an additional cognitive relay that has a priori knowledge of the sources' messages and aids in the sources' transmission. We derive a new outer bound for this channel using an argument originally devised for the "more capable" broadcast channel, and show the achievability of the proposed outer bound in the "very strong interference" regime, a class of channels where there is no loss in optimality if both destinations decode both messages. This result is analogo…
The sum-rate capacity of the parallel Gaussian interference channel is shown to be achieved by independent transmission across sub-channels and treating interference as noise in each sub-channel if the channel coefficients and power constraints satisfy a certain condition. The condition requires the interference to be weak, a situation commonly encountered in, e.g., digital subscriber line transmission. The optimal power allocation is characterized by using the concavity of sum-rate capacity as a function of the power constraints.
This paper studies a layered erasure interference channel model, which is a simplification of the Gaussian interference channel with fading using the deterministic model approach. In particular, the capacity region of the layered erasure one-sided interference channel is completely determined, assuming that the channel state information (CSI) is known to the receivers, but there is no CSI at transmitters (CSIT). The result holds for arbitrary fading statistics. Previous results of Aggarwal, Sankar, Calderbank and Poor on the capacity region or sum capacity under several interference configurat…
This paper studies a symmetric K user Gaussian interference channel with K transmitters and K receivers. A "very strong" interference regime is derived for this channel setup. A "very strong" interference regime is one where the capacity region of the interference channel is the same as the capacity region of the channel with no interference. In this regime, the interference can be perfectly canceled by all the receivers without incurring any rate penalties. A "very strong" interference condition for an example symmetric K user deterministic interference channel is also presented.
Recent outer bounds on the capacity region of Gaussian interference channels are generalized to $m$-user channels with $m>2$ and asymmetric powers and crosstalk coefficients. The bounds are again shown to give the sum-rate capacity for Gaussian interference channels with low powers and crosstalk coefficients. The capacity is achieved by using single-user detection at each receiver, i.e., treating the interference as noise incurs no loss in performance.
We establish the capacity region for a class of discrete memoryless cognitive interference channel (DM-CIC) called cognitive-more-capable channel, and we show that superposition coding is the optimal encoding technique. This is the largest capacity region for the DM-CIC to date, as the existing capacity results are explicitly shown to be its subsets.
This paper adds to the understanding of the capacity region of the Gaussian interference channel. To this end, the capacity region of the one-sided Gaussian interference channel is first fully characterized. This is accomplished by introducing a new representation of the Han-Kobayashi region and providing a new outer bound on the capacity region of this channel which is tight both in the weak and strong interference regimes. In light of this capacity result, the capacity region of the degraded Gaussian interference channel is established immediately. Next, by combining the capacity regions of …
The capacity of the multiple-access channel with any distribution of messages among the transmitting nodes was determined by Han in 1979 and the expression of the capacity region contains a number of rate bounds and that grows exponentially with the number of messages. We derive a more compact expression for the capacity region of this channel in which the number of rate bounds depends on the distribution of the messages at the encoders. Using this expression we prove capacity for a class of general cognitive network that we denote as "very strong interference" regime. In this regime there is …
We derive inner and outer bounds on the capacity region for a class of three-user partially connected interference channels. We focus on the impact of topology, interference alignment, and interplay between interference and noise. The representative channels we consider are the ones that have clear interference alignment gain. For these channels, Z-channel type outer bounds are tight to within a constant gap from capacity. We present near-optimal achievable schemes based on rate-splitting and lattice alignment.
The capacity of a network in which a multiple access channel (MAC) generates interference to a single-user channel is studied. An achievable rate region based on superposition coding and joint decoding is established for the discrete case. If the interference is very strong, the capacity region is obtained for both the discrete memoryless channel and the Gaussian channel. For the strong interference case, the capacity region is established for the discrete memoryless channel; for the Gaussian case, we attain a line segment on the boundary of the capacity region. Moreover, the capacity region f…
In this paper, we study the impact of different channel output feedback architectures on the capacity of the two-user interference channel. For a two-user interference channel, a feedback link can exist between receivers and transmitters in 9 canonical architectures (see Fig. 2), ranging from only one feedback link to four feedback links. We derive the exact capacity region for the symmetric deterministic interference channel and the constant-gap capacity region for the symmetric Gaussian interference channel for all of the 9 architectures. We show that for a linear deterministic symmetric int…
The capacity region of the 3-user Gaussian Interference Channel (GIC) with mixed strong-very strong interference was established in \cite{ChS}. The mixed strong-very strong interference conditions considered in \cite{ChS} correspond to the case where, at each receiver, one of the interfering signals is strong and the other is very strong. In this paper, we derive the capacity region of $K$-user $(K\geq 3)$ Discrete Memoryless Interference Channels (DMICs) with a mixed strong-very strong interference. This corresponds to the case where, at each receiver one of the interfering signals is strong …
This study investigates the capacity region of a three-user cognitive radio network with two primary users and one cognitive user. A three-user Cognitive Interference Channel (C-IFC) is proposed by considering a three-user Interference Channel (IFC) where one of the transmitters has cognitive capabilities and knows the messages of the other two transmitters in a non-causal manner. First, two inner bounds on the capacity region of the three-user C-IFC are obtained based on using the schemes which allow all receivers to decode all messages with two different orders. Next, two sets of conditions …
This paper studies a Gaussian Z-interference channel with a rate-limited digital relay link from one receiver to another. Achievable rate regions are derived based on a combination of Han-Kobayashi common-private information splitting technique and several different relay strategies including compress-and-forward and a partial decode-and-forward strategy, in which the interference is partially decoded then binned and forwarded through the digital link for subtraction at the other end. For the Gaussian Z-interference channel with a digital link from the interference-free receiver to the interfe…
We provide a single-letter characterization for the capacity region of a class of discrete degraded interference channels (DDICs). The class of DDICs considered includes the discrete additive degraded interference channel (DADIC) studied by Benzel. We show that for the class of DDICs studied, encoder cooperation does not increase the capacity region, and therefore, the capacity region of the class of DDICs is the same as the capacity region of the corresponding degraded broadcast channel.
This work proposes a novel outer bound for the Gaussian cognitive interference channel in strong interference at the primary receiver based on the capacity of a multi-antenna broadcast channel with degraded message set. It then shows that for the Z-channel, i.e., when the secondary receiver experiences no interference and the primary receiver experiences strong interference, the proposed outer bound not only is the tightest among known bounds but is actually achievable for sufficiently strong interference. The latter is a novel capacity result that from numerical evaluations appears to be gene…
This paper studies the capacity region of a $K$-user cyclic Gaussian interference channel, where the $k$th user interferes with only the $(k-1)$th user (mod $K$) in the network. Inspired by the work of Etkin, Tse and Wang, which derived a capacity region outer bound for the two-user Gaussian interference channel and proved that a simple Han-Kobayashi power splitting scheme can achieve to within one bit of the capacity region for all values of channel parameters, this paper shows that a similar strategy also achieves the capacity region for the $K$-user cyclic interference channel to within a c…
Certain deterministic interference channels have been shown to accurately model Gaussian interference channels in the asymptotic low-noise regime. Motivated by this correspondence, we investigate a K user-pair, cyclically symmetric, deterministic interference channel in which each receiver experiences interference only from its neighboring transmitters (Wyner model). We establish the sum capacity for a large set of channel parameters, thus generalizing previous results for the 2-pair case.
We consider a dense $K$ user Gaussian interference network formed by paired transmitters and receivers placed independently at random in a fixed spatial region. Under natural conditions on the node position distributions and signal attenuation, we prove convergence in probability of the average per-user capacity $\csum/K$ to $\half \ep \log(1 + 2 \SNR)$. The achievability result follows directly from results based on an interference alignment scheme presented in recent work of Nazer et al. Our main contribution comes through an upper bound, motivated by ideas of `bottleneck capacity' developed…
We study the discrete memoryless Z-interference channel (ZIC) where the transmitter of the pair that suffers from interference is cognitive. We first provide upper and lower bounds on the capacity of this channel. We then show that, when the channel of the transmitter-receiver pair that does not face interference is noiseless, the two bounds coincide and therefore yield the capacity region. The obtained results imply that, unlike in the Gaussian cognitive ZIC, in the considered channel superposition encoding at the non-cognitive transmitter as well as Gel'fand-Pinsker encoding at the cognitive…
This paper studies the capacity region of a $K$-user cyclic Gaussian interference channel, where the $k$th user interferes with only the $(k-1)$th user (mod $K$) in the network. Inspired by the work of Etkin, Tse and Wang, who derived a capacity region outer bound for the two-user Gaussian interference channel and proved that a simple Han-Kobayashi power splitting scheme can achieve to within one bit of the capacity region for all values of channel parameters, this paper shows that a similar strategy also achieves the capacity region of the $K$-user cyclic interference channel to within a cons…
We define a class of Z-interference channels for which we obtain a new upper bound on the capacity region. The bound exploits a technique first introduced by Korner and Marton. A channel in this class has the property that, for the transmitter-receiver pair that suffers from interference, the conditional output entropy at the receiver is invariant with respect to the transmitted codewords. We compare the new capacity region upper bound with the Han/Kobayashi achievable rate region for interference channels. This comparison shows that our bound is tight in some cases, thereby yielding specific …
We consider a dense n-user Gaussian interference network formed by paired transmitters and receivers placed independently at random in Euclidean space. Under natural conditions on the node position distributions and signal attenuation, we prove convergence in probability of the average per-user capacity C_Sigma/n to 1/2 E log(1 + 2SNR). The achievability result follows directly from results based on an interference alignment scheme presented in recent work of Nazer et al. Our main contribution comes through the converse result, motivated by ideas of `bottleneck links' developed in recent work …
The K-user cyclic Z-interference channel models a situation in which the kth transmitter causes interference only to the (k-1)th receiver in a cyclic manner, e.g., the first transmitter causes interference only to the Kth receiver. The impact of noiseless feedback on the capacity of this channel is studied by focusing on the Gaussian cyclic Z-interference channel. To this end, the symmetric feedback capacity of the linear shift deterministic cyclic Z-interference channel (LD-CZIC) is completely characterized for all interference regimes. Using insights from the linear deterministic channel mod…
In this paper, we study the effect of feedback on two-user MIMO interference channels. The capacity region of MIMO interference channels with feedback is characterized within a constant number of bits, where this constant is independent of the channel matrices. Further, it is shown that the capacity region of a MIMO interference channel with feedback and its reciprocal interference channel are within a constant number of bits. Finally, the generalized degrees of freedom region for the MIMO interference channel with feedback is characterized.
In this paper, we analyze the Gaussian X channel in the mixed interference regime. In this regime, multiple access transmission to one of the receivers is shown to be close to optimal in terms of sum rate. Three upper bounds are derived for the sum capacity in the mixed interference regime, and the subregions where each of these bounds dominate the others are identified. The genie-aided sum capacity upper bounds derived also show that the gap between sum capacity and the sum rate of the multiple access transmission scheme is small for a significant part of the mixed interference region. For an…
This paper is concerned with general interference channels characterized by a sequence of transition (conditional) probabilities. We present a general formula for the capacity region of the interference channel with two pairs of users. The formula shows that the capacity region is the union of a family of rectangles, where each rectangle is determined by a pair of spectral inf-mutual information rates. Although the presented formula is usually difficult to compute, it provides us useful insights into the interference channels. For example, the formula suggests us that the simplest inner bounds…
The capacity of the two-user Gaussian cognitive interference channel, a variation of the classical interference channel where one of the transmitters has knowledge of both messages, is known in several parameter regimes but remains unknown in general. In this paper, we consider the following achievable scheme: the cognitive transmitter pre-codes its message against the interference created at its intended receiver by the primary user, and the cognitive receiver only decodes its intended message, similar to the optimal scheme for "weak interference"; the primary decoder decodes both messages, s…
We obtain new sum capacity results for the Gaussian many-to-one and one-to-many interference channels in channel parameter regimes where the sum capacity was known only up to a constant gap. Simple Han-Kobayashi (HK) schemes, i.e., HK schemes with Gaussian signaling, no time-sharing, and no common-private power splitting, achieve sum capacity under the channel conditions for which the new results are obtained. To obtain sum capacity results, we show that genie-aided upper bounds match the achievable sum rate of simple HK schemes under certain channel conditions.
Recent results establish the optimality of interference alignment to approach the Shannon capacity of interference networks at high SNR. However, the extent to which interference can be aligned over a finite number of signalling dimensions remains unknown. Another important concern for interference alignment schemes is the requirement of global channel knowledge. In this work we provide examples of iterative algorithms that utilize the reciprocity of wireless networks to achieve interference alignment with only local channel knowledge at each node. These algorithms also provide numerical insig…
Using Gaussian inputs and treating interference as noise at the receivers has recently been shown to be sum capacity achieving for the two-user single-input single-output (SISO) Gaussian interference channel in a low interference regime, where the interference levels are below certain thresholds. In this paper, such a low interference regime is characterized for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channels. Conditions are provided on the direct and cross channel gain matrices under which using Gaussian inputs and treating interference as noise at the receivers is sum ca…
Previous works established the capacity region for some special cases of discrete memoryless degraded cognitive interference channel (CIC) with unidirectional destination cooperation (UDC). In this letter, we characterize the capacity region of the general discrete memoryless degraded CIC-UDC. The obtained results imply that the capacity region is achieved by the Gel'fand-Pinsker coding at the cognitive transmitter, superposition coding at the primary transmitter and decode-and-forward at the relay. Furthermore, using this general result and a novel converse analysis, we establish the capacity…
In this paper, we investigate the capacity of known interference channel, where the receiver knows the interference data but not the channel gain of the interference data. We first derive a tight upper bound for the capacity of this known-interference channel. After that, we obtain an achievable rate of the channel with a blind known interference cancellation (BKIC) scheme in closed form. We prove that the aforementioned upper bound in the high SNR regime can be approached by our achievable rate. Moreover, the achievable rate of our BKIC scheme is much larger than that of the traditional inter…
The Interference Channels (ICs) represent fundamental building blocks of wireless communication networks. Despite considerable progress in network information theory, available capacity results for ICs, specifically those with more than two users, are still very limited. One of the main difficulties in the analysis of these networks is how to establish useful capacity outer bounds for them. In this paper, novel techniques requiring subtle sequential application of Csiszar-Korner identity are developed to establish efficient single-letter outer bounds on the sum-rate capacity of interference ne…
This paper studies a family of genie-MAC (multiple access channel) outer bounds for K-user Gaussian interference channels. This family is inspired by existing genie-aided bounding mechanisms, but differs from current approaches in its optimization problem formulation and application. The fundamental idea behind these bounds is to create a group of genie receivers that form multiple access channels that can decode a subset of the original interference channel's messages. The MAC sum capacity of each of the genie receivers provides an outer bound on the sum of rates for this subset. The genie-MA…
A $K$-user cascade Gaussian Z-interference channel is a subclass of the general $K$-user Gaussian interference channel, where each user, except the first one, experiences interference only from the previous user. Under simple Han-Kobayashi schemes assuming Gaussian inputs and no time sharing, it is shown that the maximum sum rate is achieved by each user transmitting either common or private signals. For K=3, channel conditions under which the achieved sum rate is either equal to or within 0.5 bits to the sum capacity are identified.
In this paper the study of the cognitive interference channel with a common message, a variation of the classical cognitive interference channel in which the cognitive message is decoded at both receivers. We derive the capacity for the semideterministic channel in which the output at the cognitive decoder is a deterministic function of the channel inputs. We also show capacity to within a constant gap and a constant factor for the Gaussian channel in which the outputs are linear combinations of the channel inputs plus an additive Gaussian noise term. Most of these results are shown using an i…
The N+1 user, 1 x N single input multiple output (SIMO) Gaussian interference channel where each transmitter has a single antenna and each receiver has N antennas is studied. The symmetric capacity within O(1) is characterized for the symmetric case where all direct links have the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and all undesired links have the same interference-to-noise ratio (INR). The gap to the exact capacity is a constant which is independent of SNR and INR. To get this result, we first generalize the deterministic interference channel introduced by El Gamal and Costa to model interferen…
In this paper, we investigate the capacity of the Gaussian two-hop full-duplex (FD) relay channel with residual self-interference. This channel is comprised of a source, an FD relay, and a destination, where a direct source-destination link does not exist and the FD relay is impaired by residual self-interference. We adopt the worst-case linear self-interference model with respect to the channel capacity, and model the residual self-interference as a Gaussian random variable whose variance depends on the amplitude of the transmit symbol of the relay. For this channel, we derive the capacity an…
We study the discrete memoryless Z-interference channel (ZIC) where the transmitter of the pair that suffers from interference is cognitive. We first provide an upper bound on the capacity of this channel. We then show that, when the channel of the transmitter-receiver pair that does not experience interference is deterministic, our proposed upper bound matches the known lower bound provided by Cao and Chen in 2008. The obtained results imply that, unlike in the Gaussian cognitive ZIC, in the considered channel superposition encoding at the non-cognitive transmitter as well as Gel'fand-Pinsker…
In this paper, capacity bounds for the two-user Interference Channel (IC) with cooperative receivers via conferencing links of finite capacities is investigated. The capacity results known for this communication scenario are limited to a very few special cases of the one-sided IC. One of the major challenges in analyzing such cooperative networks is how to establish efficient capacity outer bounds for them. In this paper, by applying new techniques, novel capacity outer bounds are presented for the ICs with conferencing users. Using the outer bounds, several new capacity results are proved for…
The randomized fixe-composition with optimal decoding error exponents are studied \cite{Raul_ISIT,Raul_journal} for the finite alphabet interference channel (IFC) with two transmitter-receiver pairs. In this paper we investigate the capacity region of the randomized fixed-composition coding scheme. A complete characterization of the capacity region of the said coding scheme is given. The inner bound is derived by showing the existence of a positive error exponent within the capacity region. A simple universal decoding rule is given. The tight outer bound is derived by extending a technique fir…
We study the capacity regions of two-user interference channels where transmitters base their transmission schemes on local views of the channel state. Under the local view model, each transmitter knows only a subset of the four channel gains, which may be mismatched from the other transmitter. We consider a set of seven local views, and find that for five out of the seven local views, TDM is sufficient to achieve the qualified notion of capacity region for the linear deterministic interference channel which approximates the Gaussian interference channel. For these five local views, the qualif…
Recently, Etkin, Tse, and Wang found the capacity region of the two-user Gaussian interference channel to within one bit/s/Hz. A natural goal is to apply this approach to the Gaussian interference channel with an arbitrary number of users. We make progress towards this goal by finding the capacity region of the many-to-one and one-to-many Gaussian interference channels to within a constant number of bits. The result makes use of a deterministic model to provide insight into the Gaussian channel. The deterministic model makes explicit the dimension of signal scale. A central theme emerges: the …
We identify the role of equal strength interference links as bottlenecks on the ergodic sum capacity of a $K$ user phase-fading interference network, i.e., an interference network where the fading process is restricted primarily to independent and uniform phase variations while the channel magnitudes are held fixed across time. It is shown that even though there are $K(K-1)$ cross-links, only about $K/2$ disjoint and equal strength interference links suffice to determine the capacity of the network regardless of the strengths of the rest of the cross channels. This scenario is called a \emph{m…
This paper investigates the capacity of a communications channel that, in addition to additive white Gaussian noise, also suffers from interference caused by a co-existing radar transmission. The radar interference (of short duty-cycle and of much wider bandwidth than the intended communication signal) is modeled as an additive term whose amplitude is known and constant, but whose phase is independent and identically uniformly distributed at each channel use. The capacity achieving input distribution, under the standard average power constraint, is shown to have independent modulo and phase. T…
This paper is motivated by a sensor network on a correlated field where nearby sensors share information, and can thus assist rather than interfere with one another. A special class of two-user Gaussian interference channels (IFCs) is considered where one of the two transmitters knows both the messages to be conveyed to the two receivers (called the IFC with degraded message sets). Both achievability and converse arguments are provided for this scenario for a class of discrete memoryless channels with weak interference. For the case of the Gaussian weak interference channel with degraded messa…
