Recent results establish the optimality of interference alignment to approach the Shannon capacity of interference networks at high SNR. However, the extent to which interference can be aligned over a finite number of signalling dimensions remains unknown. Another important concern for interference alignment schemes is the requirement of global channel knowledge. In this work we provide examples of iterative algorithms that utilize the reciprocity of wireless networks to achieve interference alignment with only local channel knowledge at each node. These algorithms also provide numerical insights into the feasibility of interference alignment that are not yet available in theory.
The single most important factor behind the data rate increases experienced by users of wireless networks over the past few decades has been densification, namely adding more base stations and access points and thus getting more spatial reuse of the spectrum. This trend is set to continue into 5G and presumably beyond. However, at some point further densification will no longer be able to provide exponentially increasing data rates. Like the end of Moore's Law, this would have massive implications on the entire technology landscape, which depends ever more heavily on wireless connectivity. Whe…
Block-fading (BF) channel, also known as slow-fading channel, is a type of simple and practical channel model that can characterize the primary feature of a number of wireless-communication applications with low to moderate mobility. Although the BF channel has received significant research attention in the past twenty years, designing low-complexity outage-limit-approaching error-correction codes (ECCs) is still a challenging issue. For this reason, a novel family of protograph low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, called root-protograph (RP) LDPC codes, has been conceived recently. The RP c…
We explore degrees of freedom (DoF) characterizations of partially connected wireless networks, especially cellular networks, with no channel state information at the transmitters. Specifically, we introduce three fundamental elements --- aligned frequency reuse, wireless index coding and interference diversity --- through a series of examples, focusing first on infinite regular arrays, then on finite clusters with arbitrary connectivity and message sets, and finally on heterogeneous settings with asymmetric multiple antenna configurations. Aligned frequency reuse refers to the optimality of o…
In contrast to its wired counterpart, wireless communication is highly susceptible to eavesdropping due to the broadcast nature of the wireless propagation medium. Recent works have proposed the use of interference to reduce eavesdropping capabilities in wireless wiretap networks. However, the concurrent effect of interference on both eavesdropping receivers (ERs) and legitimate receivers (LRs) has not been thoroughly investigated, and carefully engineering the network interference is required to harness the full potential of interference for wireless secrecy. This two part paper addresses thi…
This article re-examines the fundamental notion of interference in wireless networks by contrasting traditional approaches to new concepts that handle interference in a creative way. Specifically, we discuss the fundamental limits of the interference channel and present the interference alignment technique and its extension of signal alignment techniques. Contrary to this traditional view, which treats interference as a detrimental phenomenon, we introduce three concepts that handle interference as a useful resource. The first concept exploits interference at the modulation level and leads to …
Spatial interference alignment among a finite number of users is proposed as a technique to increase the probability of successful transmission in an interference limited clustered wireless ad hoc network. Using techniques from stochastic geometry, we build on the work of Ganti and Haenggi dealing with Poisson cluster processes with a fixed number of cluster points and provide a numerically integrable expression for the outage probability using an intra-cluster interference alignment strategy with multiplexing gain one. For a special network setting we derive a closed-form upper bound. We demo…
Stochastic orders are binary relations defined on probability distributions which capture intuitive notions like being larger or being more variable. This paper introduces stochastic ordering of interference distributions in large-scale networks modeled as point process. Interference is the main performance-limiting factor in most wireless networks, thus it is important to understand its statistics. Since closed-form results for the distribution of interference for such networks are only available in limited cases, interference of networks are compared using stochastic orders, even when closed…
Doppler effect is a fundamental phenomenon that appears in wave propagation, where a moving observer experiences dilation or contraction of wavelength of a wave. It also appears in radio frequency (RF) wireless communication when there exists a relative movement between the transmitter and the receiver, and is widely considered as a major impairment for reliable wireless communication. The current paper proposes Doppler Assisted Wireless Communication that exploits Doppler effect for co-channel interference mitigation. The proposed system also exploits the propagation environment and the netwo…
In this paper we propose a power-efficient transfer of information and energy, where we exploit the constructive part of wireless interference as a source of green useful signal power. Rather than suppressing interference as in conventional schemes, we take advantage of constructive interference among users, inherent in the downlink, as a source of both useful information and wireless energy. Specifically, we propose a new precoding design that minimizes the transmit power while guaranteeing the quality of service (QoS) and energy harvesting constraints for generic phase shift keying modulated…
We consider arbitrary dense wireless networks, in which $n$ nodes are placed in an arbitrary (deterministic) manner on a square region of unit area and communicate with each other over Gaussian fading channels. We provide inner and outer bounds for the $n\times n$-dimensional unicast and the $n\times 2^n$-dimensional multicast capacity regions of such a wireless network. These inner and outer bounds differ only by a factor $O(\log(n))$, yielding a fairly tight scaling characterization of the entire regions. The communication schemes achieving the inner bounds use interference alignment as a ce…
We consider a single hop wireless X network with $K$ transmitters and $J$ receivers, all with single antenna. Each transmitter conveys for each receiver an independent message. The channel is assumed to have constant coefficients. We develop interference alignment scheme for this setup and derived several achievable degrees of freedom regions. We show that in some cases, the derived region meets a previous outer bound and are hence the DoF region. For our achievability schemes, we divide each message into streams and use real interference alignment on the streams. Several previous results on t…
This chapter presents joint interference suppression and power allocation algorithms for DS-CDMA and MIMO networks with multiple hops and amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward (DF) protocols. A scheme for joint allocation of power levels across the relays and linear interference suppression is proposed. We also consider another strategy for joint interference suppression and relay selection that maximizes the diversity available in the system. Simulations show that the proposed cross-layer optimization algorithms obtain significant gains in capacity and performance over existing schemes.
Radio-frequency (RF) signals enabled wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) is a cost-effective technique to achieve two-way communications and at the same time provide energy supplies for low-power wireless devices. However, the information transmission in WIPT is vulnerable to the eavesdropping by the energy receivers (ERs). To achieve secrecy communications with information nodes (INs) while satisfying the energy transfer requirement of ERs, an efficient solution is to exploit a dual use of the energy signals also as useful interference or artificial noise (AN) to interfere with the…
This paper proposes interference mitigation techniques for provisioning ultrareliable low-latency wireless communication in an industrial automation setting, where multiple transmissions from controllers to actuators interfere with each other. Channel fading and interference are key impairments in wireless communication. This paper leverages the recently proposed ``Occupy CoW'' protocol that efficiently exploits the broadcast opportunity and spatial diversity through a two-hop cooperative communication strategy among distributed receivers to combat deep fading, but points out that because this…
This paper investigates the throughput for wireless network with full-duplex radios using stochastic geometry. Full-duplex (FD) radios can exchange data simultaneously with each other. On the other hand, the downside of FD transmission is that it will inevitably cause extra interference to the network compared to half-duplex (HD) transmission. Moreover, the residual self-interference has negative effects on the network throughput. In this paper, we focus on a wireless network of nodes with both HD and FD capabilities and derive and optimize the throughput in such a network. Our analytical resu…
Most work on wireless network throughput ignores the temporal correlation inherent to wireless channels because it degrades tractability. To better model and quantify the temporal variations of wireless network throughput, this paper introduces a metric termed ergodic transmission capacity (ETC), which includes spatial and temporal ergodicity. All transmitters in the network form a homogeneous Poisson point process and all channels are modeled by a finite state Markov chain. The bounds on outage probability and ETC are characterized, and their scaling behaviors for a sparse and dense network a…
In this letter, we consider single-cell, single-user systems wherein uplink and downlink user equipment communicate with a full-duplex relay. Due to the near-far problem, the self-interference (SI) can be 100-1000x the received signal power. In this context, we consider the adaptive Least Mean Squares (LMS) algorithm to estimate the SI channel and then subtract the SI from the desired received signal before the analog-to-digital converter (ADC). We measure the robustness of this technique in terms of bit error rate (BER) and spectral efficiency.
In-band full duplex wireless is of utmost interest to future wireless communication and networking due to great potentials of spectrum efficiency. IBFD wireless, however, is throttled by its key challenge, namely self-interference. Therefore, effective self-interference cancellation is the key to enable IBFD wireless. This paper proposes a real-time non-linear self-interference cancellation solution based on deep learning. In this solution, a self-interference channel is modeled by a deep neural network (DNN). Synchronized self-interference channel data is first collected to train the DNN of t…
In this paper, a two-hop decode-and-forward cognitive radio system with deployed interference alignment is considered. The relay node is energy-constrained and scavenges the energy from the interference signals. In the literature, there are two main energy harvesting protocols, namely, time-switching relaying and power-splitting relaying. We first demonstrate how to design the beamforming matrices for the considered primary and secondary networks. Then, the system capacity under perfect and imperfect channel state information scenarios, considering different portions of time-switching and powe…
We investigate the secrecy performance of a multiuser diversity scheme for an interference-limited wireless network with a base-station (BS), $N$ legitimate users and an eavesdropper, in the presence of a single dominant interferer. Assuming interference dominates noise power at the eavesdropper and at each legitimate user's receiver, the BS transmits information to the legitimate user with the $k$-th best (highest) signal-to-interference ratio. We derive a closed-form expression for the secrecy outage probability for an arbitrary $N$ and an asymptotic expression for a fixed $k$ and large $N$.…
In this paper, we propose to exploit the limited cache packets as side information to cancel incoming interference at the receiver side. We consider a stochastic network where the random locations of base stations and users are modeled using Poisson point processes. Caching schemes to reap both the local caching gain and the interference cancellation gain for the users are developed based on two factors: the density of different user subsets and the packets cached in the corresponding subsets. The packet loss rate (PLR) is analyzed, which depends on both the cached packets and the channel stat…
In this paper, we study network coding capacity for random wireless networks. Previous work on network coding capacity for wired and wireless networks have focused on the case where the capacities of links in the network are independent. In this paper, we consider a more realistic model, where wireless networks are modeled by random geometric graphs with interference and noise. In this model, the capacities of links are not independent. We consider two scenarios, single source multiple destinations and multiple sources multiple destinations. In the first scenario, employing coupling and martin…
This work explores how degrees of freedom (DoF) results from wireless networks can be translated into capacity results for their finite field counterparts that arise in network coding applications. The main insight is that scalar (SISO) finite field channels over $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ are analogous to n x n vector (MIMO) channels in the wireless setting, but with an important distinction -- there is additional structure due to finite field arithmetic which enforces commutativity of matrix multiplication and limits the channel diversity to n, making these channels similar to diagonal channels in t…
Consider the communication of a single-user aided by a nearby relay involved in a large wireless network where the nodes form an homogeneous Poisson point process. Since this network is interference-limited the asymptotic error probability is bounded from above by the outage probability experienced by the user. We investigate the outage behavior for the well-known cooperative schemes, namely, decode-and-forward (DF) and compress-and-forward (CF). In this setting, the outage events are induced by both fading and the spatial proximity of neighbor nodes who generate the strongest interference and…
This paper studies a two-hop decode-and-forward underlay cognitive radio system with interference alignment technique. An energy-constrained relay node harvests the energy from the interference signals through a power-splitting (PS) relaying protocol. Firstly, the beamforming matrices design for the primary and secondary networks is demonstrated. Then, a bit error rate (BER) performance of the system under perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) scenarios for PS protocol is calculated. Finally, the impact of the CSI mismatch parameters on the BER performance is simulated.
We develop a new framework for measuring and comparing the accuracy of any wireless interference models used in the analysis and design of wireless networks. Our approach is based on a new index that assesses the ability of the interference model to correctly predict harmful interference events, i.e., link outages. We use this new index to quantify the accuracy of various interference models used in the literature, under various scenarios such as Rayleigh fading wireless channels, directional antennas, and blockage (impenetrable obstacles) in the network. Our analysis reveals that in highly di…
Two-way is a dominant mode of communication in wireless systems. Departing from the tradition to optimize each transmission direction separately, recent work has demonstrated that, for time-division duplex (TDD) systems, optimizing the schedule of the two transmission directions depending on traffic load and interference condition leads to performance gains. In this letter, a general network of multiple interfering two-way links is studied under the assumption of a balanced load in the two directions for each link. Using the notion of interference spin, we introduce an algebraic framework for …
A key challenge in wireless networking is the management of interference between transmissions. Identifying which transmitters interfere with each other is a crucial first step. In this paper we cast the task of estimating the a wireless interference environment as a graph learning problem. Nodes represent transmitters and edges represent the presence of interference between pairs of transmitters. We passively observe network traffic transmission patterns and collect information on transmission successes and failures. We establish bounds on the number of observations (each a snapshot of a netw…
In-band full-duplex (IBFD) operation has emerged as an attractive solution for increasing the throughput of wireless communication systems and networks. With IBFD, a wireless terminal is allowed to transmit and receive simultaneously in the same frequency band. This tutorial paper reviews the main concepts of IBFD wireless. Because one the biggest practical impediments to IBFD operation is the presence of self-interference, i.e., the interference caused by an IBFD node's own transmissions to its desired receptions, this tutorial surveys a wide range of IBFD self-interference mitigation techniq…
It is shown that the performance of the maximal scheduling algorithm in wireless ad hoc networks under the hypergraph interference model can be further away from optimal than previously known. The exact worst-case performance of this distributed, greedy scheduling algorithm is analyzed.
We show that the problem of analyzing the outage probability in cellular systems affected by co-channel interference and background noise is mathematically equivalent to the problem of analyzing the wireless information-theoretic security in terms of the maximum secrecy rate in fading channels. Hence, these both apparently unrelated problems can be addressed by using a common approach. We illustrate the applicability of the connection unveiled herein to provide new results for the secrecy outage probability in different scenarios.
Content delivery success in wireless caching helper networks depends mainly on cache-based channel selection diversity and network interference. For given channel fading and network geometry, both channel selection diversity and network interference dynamically vary according to what and how the caching helpers cache at their finite storage space. We study probabilistic content placement (or caching placement) to desirably control cache-based channel selection diversity and network interference in a stochastic wireless caching helper network, with sophisticated considerations of wireless fadin…
Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is an appealing solution to balance the energy distribution in wireless networks and improve the energy-efficiency of the entire network. In this paper, we study the optimal policies for SWIPT over the flat-fading channel subject to the co-channel interference. The SWIPT receiver using dynamic power splitting (DPS) is expected to achieve the maximum information rate given an average harvested energy constraint. In the case that channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is not available, the optimal power splitting is derive…
In this paper we study the relay-interference wireless network, in which relay (helper) nodes are to facilitate competing information flows over a wireless network. We examine this in the context of a deterministic wireless interaction model, which eliminates the channel noise and focuses on the signal interactions. Using this model, we show that almost all the known schemes such as interference suppression, interference alignment and interference separation are necessary for relay-interference networks. In addition, we discover a new interference management technique, which we call interferen…
In this paper, we study the Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) in a Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) two-user Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) Interference Channel (IFC). We assume that the transmitters are non-cooperative and have perfect knowledge of the local Channel State Information (CSI). We show that the necessary condition for the optimal transmission strategy at high SNR is for the energy transmitter to transmit its signal by allocating its transmit power on a single subcarrier. Accordingly, we propose a one-subcarrier selection method for t…
We present an experiment-based characterization of passive suppression and active self-interference cancellation mechanisms in full-duplex wireless communication systems. In particular, we consider passive suppression due to antenna separation at the same node, and active cancellation in analog and/or digital domain. First, we show that the average amount of cancellation increases for active cancellation techniques as the received self-interference power increases. Our characterization of the average cancellation as a function of the self-interference power allows us to show that for a constan…
This letter is concerned with the secrecy performance of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-aided wireless networks in the existence of multiple interferers towards the destination. To be more precise, we analyze three critical issues in the design of secure RIS-assisted networks: 1) How do interferers affect the performance of secure wireless networks? 2) Which of the two groups of eavesdroppers (i.e., colluding and non-colluding) is more severe? 3) How can RIS improve network confidentiality? To do so, we develop the analytical expression of secrecy outage probability in closed-form, …
Radio resource sharing mechanisms are key to ensuring good performance in wireless networks. In their seminal paper \cite{tassiulas1}, Tassiulas and Ephremides introduced the Maximum Weighted Scheduling algorithm, and proved its throughput-optimality. Since then, there have been extensive research efforts to devise distributed implementations of this algorithm. Recently, distributed adaptive CSMA scheduling schemes \cite{jiang08} have been proposed and shown to be optimal, without the need of message passing among transmitters. However their analysis relies on the assumption that interference …
In this paper, we consider a wireless powered multi-relay network in which a multi-antenna hybrid access point underlaying a cellular system transmits information to distant receivers. Multiple relays capable of energy harvesting are deployed in the network to assist the information transmission. The hybrid access point can wirelessly supply energy to the relays, achieving multi-user gains from signal and energy cooperation. We propose a joint optimization for signal beamforming of the hybrid access point as well as wireless energy harvesting and collaborative beamforming strategies of the rel…
We analyze the achievable rate in interference-free wireless networks with physical layer fading channels and orthogonal multiple access. As a starting point, the point-to-point channel is considered. We find the optimal physical and network layer rate trade-off which maximizes the achievable overall rate for both a fixed rate transmission scheme and an improved scheme based on multiple virtual users and superposition coding. These initial results are extended to the network setting, where, based on a cut-set formulation, the achievable rate at each node and its upper bound are derived. We pro…
The challenge to in-band full-duplex wireless communication is managing self-interference. Many designs have employed spatial isolation mechanisms, such as shielding or multi-antenna beamforming, to isolate the self-interference wave from the receiver. Such spatial isolation methods are effective, but by confining the transmit and receive signals to a subset of the available space, the full spatial resources of the channel be under-utilized, expending a cost that may nullify the net benefit of operating in full-duplex mode. In this paper we leverage an antenna-theory-based channel model to ana…
A fundamental problem arising in dense wireless networks is the high co-channel interference. Interference alignment (IA) was recently proposed as an effective way to combat interference in wireless networks. The concept of IA, though, is originated by the capacity study of interference channels and as such, its performance is mainly gauged under ideal assumptions, such as instantaneous and perfect channel state information (CSI) at all nodes, and homogeneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) users, i.e., each user has the same average SNR. Consequently, the performance of IA under realistic conditi…

Data traffic over wireless communication networks has experienced a tremendous growth in the last decade, and it is predicted to exponentially increase in the next decades. Enabling future wireless networks to fulfill this expectation is a challenging task both due to the scarcity of radio resources (e.g. spectrum and energy), and also the inherent characteristics of the wireless transmission medium. Wireless transmission is in general subject to two phenomena: fading and interference. The elegant interference alignment concept reveals that with proper transmission signalling design, different…
Inter-cell interference (ICI) is one of the major performance-limiting factors in the context of modern cellular systems. To tackle ICI, coordinated multi-point (CoMP) schemes have been proposed as a key technology for next-generation mobile communication systems. Although CoMP schemes offer promising theoretical gains, their performance could degrade significantly because of practical issues such as limited backhaul. To address this issue, we explore a novel uplink interference management scheme called anywhere decoding, which requires exchanging just a few bits of information per coding inte…
Interference minimization problem in wireless sensor and ad-hoc networks is considered. That is to assign a transmission power to each node of a network such that the network is connected and at the same time the maximum of accumulated signal straight on network nodes is minimum. Previous works on interference minimization in wireless networks mainly consider the disk graph model of network. For disk graph model two approximation algorithms with $O(\sqrt{n})$ and $O((opt\ln{n})^{2})$ upper bounds of maximum interference are known, where $n$ is the number of nodes and $opt$ is the minimal inter…
Considering a multi-user interference network with an eavesdropper, this paper aims at the power allocation to optimize the worst secrecy throughput among the network links or the secure energy efficiency in terms of achieved secrecy throughput per Joule under link security requirements. Three scenarios for the access of channel state information are considered: the perfect channel state information, partial channel state information with channels from the transmitters to the eavesdropper exponentially distributed, and not perfectly known channels between the transmitters and the users with ex…
This invited paper presents some novel ideas on how to enhance the performance of consensus algorithms in distributed wireless sensor networks, when communication costs are considered. Of particular interest are consensus algorithms that exploit the broadcast property of the wireless channel to boost the performance in terms of convergence speeds. To this end, we propose a novel clustering based consensus algorithm that exploits interference for computation, while reducing the energy consumption in the network. The resulting optimization problem is a semidefinite program, which can be solved o…
A wireless communication network is considered where any two nodes are connected if the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) between them is greater than a threshold. We consider the the path-loss plus fading model of wireless signal propagation. Assuming that the nodes of the wireless network are distributed as a Poisson point process (PPP), percolation (formation of an unbounded connected cluster) on the resulting SIR graph is studied as a function of the density of the PPP. We study the super critical regime of percolation and show that for a small enough threshold, there exists a closed inte…
This paper studies an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled two-user interference channel for wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs), in which two UAVs wirelessly charge two low-power Internet-of-things (IoT)-devices on the ground and collect information from them. We consider two scenarios when both UAVs cooperate in energy transmission and/or information reception via interference coordination and coordinated multi-point (CoMP), respectively. For both scenarios, the UAVs' controllable mobility is exploited via trajectory design to not only enhance the wireless power transfer (WPT) e…
Massive multiple-inputmultiple-output (MIMO) systems, dense small-cells (SCs), and full duplex are three candidate techniques for next-generation communication systems. The cooperation of next-generation techniques could offer more benefits, e.g., SC in-band wireless backhaul in massive MIMO systems. In this paper, three strategies of SC in-band wireless backhaul in massive MIMO systems are introduced and compared, i.e., complete time-division duplex (CTDD), zero-division duplex (ZDD), and ZDD with interference rejection (ZDD-IR). Simulation results demonstrate that SC in-band wireless backhau…
In this paper, we investigate the capacity of a point-to-point, full-duplex (FD), wirelessly powered communication system impaired by self-interference. This system is comprised of an energy transmitter (ET) and an energy harvesting user (EHU), both operating in a FD mode. The ET transmits energy towards the EHU. The EHU harvests this energy and uses it to transmit information back to the ET. As a result of the FD mode, both nodes are affected by self-interference. The self-interference has a different effect at the two nodes: it impairs the decoding of the received signal at the ET, however, …
This paper investigates the problem of Gaussian approximation for the wireless multi-access interference distribution in large spatial wireless networks. First, a principled methodology is presented to establish rates of convergence of the multi-access interference distribution to a Gaussian distribution for general bounded and power-law decaying path-loss functions. The model is general enough to also include various random wireless channel dynamics such as fading and shadowing arising from multipath propagation and obstacles existing in the communication environment. It is shown that the wir…
In the analysis of large random wireless networks, the underlying node distribution is almost ubiquitously assumed to be the homogeneous Poisson point process. In this paper, the node locations are assumed to form a Poisson clustered process on the plane. We derive the distributional properties of the interference and provide upper and lower bounds for its CCDF. We consider the probability of successful transmission in an interference limited channel when fading is modeled as Rayleigh. We provide a numerically integrable expression for the outage probability and closed-form upper and lower bou…
In this paper, we present and study a digital-controlled method, called SoftNull, to enable full-duplex in many-antenna systems. Unlike most designs that rely on analog cancelers to suppress self-interference, SoftNull relies on digital transmit beamforming to reduce self-interference. SoftNull does not attempt to perfectly null self-interference, but instead seeks to reduce self-interference sufficiently to prevent swamping the receiver's dynamic range. Residual self-interference is then cancelled digitally by the receiver. We evaluate the performance of SoftNull using measurements from a 72-…
Ultra-dense networks (UDNs) provide a promising paradigm to cope with exponentially increasing mobile traffic. However, little work has to date considered unsaturated traffic with quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. This paper presents a new cross-layer analytical model to capture the unsaturated traffic of a UDN in the presence of QoS requirements. The effective capacity (EC) of the UDN is derived, taking into account small-scale channel fading and possible interference. Key properties of the EC are revealed. The amount of traffic impacts effective capacity of the UDN due to the sophistica…
Degrees of freedom (DoF) is studied in the downlink of a heterogenous wireless network modeled as a two-layered interference network. The first layer of the interference network is the backhaul layer between macro base stations (MB) and small cell base stations (SB), which is modeled as a Wyner type linear network. The second layer is the transmission layer between SBs and mobile terminals (MTs), which is modeled as a linear Wyner $L_T$ network, i.e., each MT is connected to $L_T+1$ SBs. The SBs are assumed to be half-duplex, thus restricting the per user degrees of freedom (puDoF) in the syst…
A central problem in the operation of large wireless networks is how to deal with interference -- the unwanted signals being sent by transmitters that a receiver is not interested in. This thesis looks at ways of combating such interference. In Chapters 1 and 2, we outline the necessary information and communication theory background, including the concept of capacity. We also include an overview of a new set of schemes for dealing with interference known as interference alignment, paying special attention to a channel-state-based strategy called ergodic interference alignment. In Chapter 3, w…
