With the help of a unified description of the nuclear structure and of the direct reaction mechanism we show that a recent 1H(11Li,9Li)3H experiment provides, for the first time in nuclear physics, direct evidence of phonon mediated pairing.
The yrast line of the N=Z nucleus 48Cr is studied up to high spins by means of the cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method including the T=0 and T=1 isospin pairing channels. A Skyrme force is used in the mean-field channel together with a zero-range density-dependent interaction in the pairing channels. The extensions of the method needed to incorporate the neutron-proton pairing are summarized. The T=0 pairing correlations are found to play a decisive role for deformation properties and excitation energies above 16hbar which is the maximum spin that can be obtained in the f7/2 subshell.
Finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory using Skyrme interactions and Relativistic Hartree-Fock effective Lagrangians, predicts $^{48}$Ni as being a possible candidate for the finite temperature pairing re-entrance phenomenon. For this proton-drip-line nucleus, proton resonant states are expected to contribute substantially to pairing correlations and the two predicted critical temperatures are $T_{c1}\sim 0.08-0.2$~MeV and $T_{c2}\sim 0.7-0.9$~MeV. It is also shown that pairing re-entrance modifies the proton single particle energies around the Fermi level, as well as occupation num…
Partonic matter produced in the early stage of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is assumed to be composed mainly of gluons, and quarks and antiquarks are produced at later times. To study the implications of such a scenario, the dynamical evolution of a chemically nonequilibrated system is described by the ideal (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics with a time dependent (anti)quark fugacity. The equation of state interpolates linearly between the lattice data for the pure gluonic matter and the lattice data for the chemically equilibrated quark-gluon plasma. The spectra and elliptic flo…
In order to study the nucleon-nucleon pairing effects in clustering nuclei, we formulate a superposed Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Roepke (THSR) wave function, which includes both molecular-orbit and pairing configurations explicitly. With this new wave function, we investigate the abnormal deuteron-like pn-pairing effect in 10B with T=0 and S=1 (isoscalar) by comparing with isovector NN pairs (T=1, S=1) in 10Be and 10C. Energies are calculated for the ground states of 10Be, 10B and 10C nuclei, and the 1+ excited state of 10B. These energies are essentially improved comparing with studies using pre…
If neutrons are progressively added to a normal nucleus, the Pauli principle forces them into states of higher momentum. When the core becomes neutron-saturated, the nucleus expels most of the wavefunction of the last neutrons outside to form a halo, which because of its large size can have lower momentum. It is an open question how nature stabilizes such a fragile system and provides the glue needed to bind the halo neutrons to the core. Here we show that this problem is similar to that of the instability of the normal state of an electron system at zero temperature solved by Cooper, solution…
The hot nucleus $^{162}\mathrm{Dy}$ is investigated using covariant density functional theory, where the shell-model-like approach treats the pairing correlation. Lee-Yang's theorem is applied to classify the pairing phase transition by analyzing the distribution of zeros of the partition function in the complex temperature plane. The distribution of zeros of the partition function converges with increasing particle numbers and illustrates the characteristics of the phase transition. In our calculations, we determine the first order of the phase transition near the critical temperature. Differ…
Pairing reentrance phenomenon in the warm rotating $^{104}$Pd nucleus is studied within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-based approach (the FTBCS1). The theory takes into account the effect of quasiparticle number fluctuations on the pairing field at finite temperature and angular momentum within the pairing model plus noncollective rotation along the symmetry axis. The numerical calculations for the pairing gaps and nuclear level densities (NLD), of which an anomalous enhancement has been experimentally observed at low excitation energy $E^*$ and high angular momentum $J$, show that the p…
The nuclear pairing condensate is expected to change character from spin-singlet to spin-triplet when the nucleus is very large and the neutron and proton numbers $Z,N$ are equal. We investigate the transition between these two phases within the framework of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations, using a zero-range interaction to generate the pairing. We confirm that extremely large nucleus would indeed favor triplet pairing condensates, with the Hamiltonian parameters taken from known systematics. The favored phase is found to depend on the specific orbitals at the Fermi energy. The smallest …
The ground state and low-lying continuum states of 6He are found within a shell model scheme, in a basis of two-particle states built out of continuum p-states of the unbound 5He nucleus, using a simple pairing contact-delta interaction. This accounts for the Borromean character of the bound ground state, revealing its composition. We investigate the quadrupole response of the system and we put our calculations into perspective with the latest experimental results. The calculated quadrupole strength distribution reproduces the narrow 2+ resonance, while a second wider peak is found at about 3.…
The Yang Mills equations provide a classical mean field description of gauge fields. In view of developing a coherent description of the formation of the quark gluon plasma in high energetic nucleus-nucleus collisions we study pure gauge field dynamics in 3+1 dimensions. In collisions of wave packets, numerically simulated on a SU(2) gauge lattice, we study transverse and longitudinal energy currents. For wave packets with different polarizations in color space, we observe a time delayed fragmentation after the collision resulting in a rapid expansion into transverse directions. We call this p…
The influence of pairing correlations on the neutron root mean square (rms) radius of nuclei is investigated in the framework of self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations. The continuum is treated appropriately by the Green's function techniques. As an example the nucleus $^{124}$Zr is treated for a varying strength of pairing correlations. We find that, as the pairing strength increases, the neutron rms radius first shrinks, reaches a minimum and beyond this point it expands again. The shrinkage is due to the the so-called `pairing anti-halo effect', i. e. due to the decreas…
We propose a self-consistent quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) plus quasi-particle-vibration coupling (QPVC) model with Skyrme interactions to describe the width and the line shape of giant resonances in open-shell nuclei, in which the effect of superfluidity should be taken into account in both the ground state and the excited states. We apply the new model to the Gamow-Teller resonance in the superfluid nucleus $^{120}$Sn, including both the isoscalar spin-triplet and the isovector spin-singlet pairing interactions. The strength distribution in $^{120}$Sn is well reproduced an…
We introduce a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean-field approach to treat the problem of proton emission from a deformed nucleus. By substituting a rigid rotor in a particle-rotor-model with a mean-field we obtain a better description of experimental data in $^{141}$Ho. The approach also elucidates the softening of kinematic coupling between particle and collective rotation, the Coriolis attenuation problem.
Partonic matter produced in the early stage of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is assumed to be composed mainly of gluons, and quarks and antiquarks are produced at later times. The comparable hydrodynamic simulations of heavy-ion collisions for (2+1)-flavor and Yang-Mills equations of state performed by using three different hydrodynamic codes are presented. Assuming slow chemical equilibration of quarks, the spectra and elliptic flows of thermal dileptons and photons are calculated for central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 2.76$ TeV. It is shown t…
We assess the accuracy of finite-temperature mean-field theory using as a standard the Hamiltonian and model space of the shell model Monte Carlo calculations. Two examples are considered: the nucleus $^{162}$Dy, representing a heavy deformed nucleus, and $^{148}$Sm, representing a nearby heavy spherical nucleus with strong pairing correlations. The errors inherent in the finite-temperature Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximations are analyzed by comparing the entropies of the grand canonical and canonical ensembles, as well as the level density at the neutron resonance threshol…
We systematically analyse the coherence length in even-even nuclei. The pairing coherence length in the spin-singlet channel for the effective density dependent delta (DDD) and Gaussian interaction is estimated. We consider in our calculations bound states as well as narrow resonances. It turns out that the pairing gaps given by the DDD interaction are similar to those of the Gaussian potential if one renormalizes the radial width to the nuclear radius. The correlations induced by the pairing interaction have in all considered cases a long range character inside the nucleus and decrease toward…
The influence of large amplitude pairing fluctuations is investigated in the framework of beyond mean field symmetry conserving configuration mixing calculations. In the numerical application the finite range density dependent Gogny force is used. We investigate the nucleus $^{54}$Cr with particle number and angular momentum projected wave functions considering the axial quadrupole deformation and the pairing gap degree of freedom as generator coordinates. We find that the effects of the pairing fluctuations increase with the excitation energy and the angular momentum. The self-consistency in …
As a model for a deformed nucleus the many level pairing model (picket fence model with ~100 levels) is considered in four approximations and compared to the exact solution given by Richardson long time ago. It is found that, as usual, the number projected BCS method improves over standard BCS but that it is much less accurate than the more sophisticated many-body-approaches which are Coupled Cluster Theory (CCT) in its SUB2 version or Self-Consistent Random Phase Approximation (SCRPA).
We formulate the Jost function formalism based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory which has been used to represent the nature of the superfluidity of nucleus. The Jost function based on the HFB can give the analytic representation of the S-matrix for the nucleon elastic scattering targeting on the open-shell nucleus taking into account the pairing effect. By adopting the Woods-Saxon potential, we show the numerical results of S-matrix poles and their trajectories with varying the pairing strength in two cases of Fermi energies. The total cross sections in each cases for neutron elasti…
On the basis of time-dependent mean-field picture, we discuss the nature of the low-frequency quadrupole vibrations from small-amplitude to large-amplitude regimes as representatives of surface shape vibrations of a superfluid droplet (nucleus). We consider full five-dimensional quadrupole dynamics including three-dimensional rotations restoring the broken symmetries as well as axially symmetric and asymmetric shape fluctuations. We show that the intimate connections between the BCS pairing and collective vibrations reveal through the inertial masses governing their collective kinetic energies…
We explore the evolution of the structure of the ground state of a nucleus with two valence nucleons as the system approaches the two particle threshold. We use a three-body model of $core+n+n$ where the core is deformed and allowed to excite. We find that both NN correlations and correlations due to deformation/excitation of the core inhibit the formation of halos. Our results suggest that it is unlikely to find halo nuclei on the dripline of deformed nuclei.
The collective yrast band of the nucleus $^{48}$Cr is studied using the spherical shell model and the HFB method. Both approaches produce basically the same axially symmetric intrinsic state up to the - accurately reproduced - observed backbending. Agreement between both calculations extends to most observables. The only significant discrepancy comes from the static moments of inertia and can be attributed to the need of a more refined treatment of pairing correlations in the HFB calculation.
The role of superfluidity in the incompressibility and in the symmetry energy is studied in nuclear matter and finite nuclei. Several pairing interactions are used: surface, mixed and isovector dependent. Pairing has a small effect on the nuclear matter incompressibility at saturation density, but the effects are significant at lower densities. The pairing effect on the centroid energy of the isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (GMR) is also evaluated for Pb and Sn isotopes by using a microscopic constrained-HFB approach, and found to change at most by 10% the nucleus incompressibility $K_A$. I…
The role of different continuum components in the weakly-bound nucleus $^6$He is studied by coupling unbound spd-waves of $^5$He by means of simple pairing contact-delta interaction. The results of our previous investigations in a model space containing only p-waves, showed the collective nature of the ground state and allowed the calculation of the electric quadrupole transitions. We extend this simple model by including also sd-continuum neutron states and we investigate the electric monopole, dipole and octupole response of the system for transitions to the continuum, discussing the contrib…
We study the exotic deformed nucleus $^{31}$Ne using an approach that combines self-consistent structure and reaction theory. We utilize the fully-relativistic, microscopic deformed Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) to demonstrate that deformation and pairing correlations give rise to a halo structure with large-amplitude $p$-wave configuration in $^{31}$Ne. We then use the valence nucleon wave functions and angle-averaged density distributions of $^{30}$Ne from this model as input for a Glauber reaction model to study the observables of neutron-rich Neon isotopes and search for h…
With the help of the static and dynamic mean field spectroscopic amplitudes, taking into account successive and simultaneous transfer channels properly corrected because of non-orthogonality effects, as well as describing the associated elastic channels in terms of experimentally determined optical potentials, one obtains absolute, two-particle transfer differential cross sections which provide an overall account of the data within experimental errors. One of the first results connected with such quantitative studies of pairing correlations in nuclei is the observation of phonon mediated pairi…
We propose a description of pairing properties in finite systems within the canonical and microcanonical ensembles. The approach is derived by solving the BCS and self-consistent quasiparticle random-phase approximation with the Lipkin-Nogami particle-number projection at zero temperature. The obtained eigenvalues are embedded into the canonical and microcanonical ensembles. The results obtained are found in quite good agreement with the exact solutions of the doubly-folded equidistant multilevel pairing model as well as the experimental data for $^{56}$Fe nucleus. The merit of the present app…
In order to extract informations on pairing correlations in nuclei from experimental mass differences, the different contributions to odd-even mass differences are investigated within the Skyrme HFB method. In this first paper, the description of odd nuclei within HFB is discussed since it is the key point for the understanding of the above mentioned contributions. To go from an even nucleus to an odd one, the advantage of a two steps process is demonstrated and its physical content is discussed. New results concerning time-reversal symmetry breaking in odd-nuclei are also reported. PACS: 21.1…
Role of different continuum components in the weakly bound nucleus 6He is studied by coupling unbound spd-waves of 5He by using simple pairing contact-delta interaction. The results show that 6He ground state $0^+$ displays collective nature by taking contribution from five different oscillating continuum states that sum up to give an exponentially decaying bound wavefunction emerging from five different possible configurations i.e. $(s_{1/2})^2$, $(p_{1/2})^2$, $(p_{3/2})^2$, $(d_{3/2})^2$ and $(d_{5/2})^2$. The ground state properties of 6He has been calculated.
Based on the relativistic Hartree-Fock formalism and one of the most advanced Lagrangian PKA1, we investigate the properties of the exotic nucleus 48Si. We found that 48Si may be an atypical nucleus characterized by i) the onset of doubly magicity, ii) its location at the drip line, iii) the presence of a doubly semibubble (central depletion of the neutron and proton density profiles) in the ground state, and iv) the occurrence of pairing reentrance at finite temperature. These phenomenons are not independent from each others. We illustrate for instance that the doubly semibubble reduces the s…
The influence of the isoscalar and isovector L=0 pairing components of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction is evaluated for several isobaric chains, in the framework of full pf shell model calculations. We show that the combined effect of both isospin channels of the pairing force is responsible for the appearance of T=1 ground states in N=Z odd-odd nuclei. However, no evidence is found relating them to the Wigner energy. We study the dependence of their contributions to the total energy on the rotational frecuency in the deformed nucleus 48Cr. Both decrease with increasing angular momen…
We propose a semi-microscopic model for the simultaneous emission of two protons. This model has the advantage of avoiding certain technical aspects of a fully microscopic 3-body framework, while also allowing the investigation of the influence of proton pairing on the total lifetime of the decaying nucleus. Thus, we use the standard singlet two-proton wave function on the nuclear surface, provided by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approach, as a boundary condition for the propagator operator. Our model allows for the estimation of all quantities related to the $2p$ emission process, sinc…
We discuss the pairing gap, a measure for nuclear pairing correlations, in chains of spherical, semi-magic nuclei in the framework of self-consistent nuclear mean-field models. The equations for the conventional BCS model and the approximate projection-before-variation Lipkin-Nogami method are formulated in terms of local density functionals for the effective interaction. We calculate the Lipkin-Nogami corrections of both the mean-field energy and the pairing energy. Various definitions of the pairing gap are discussed as three-point, four-point and five-point mass-difference formulae, average…
Based on a microscopic description of superfluidity in overflowing nuclear systems, it is shown that continuum coupling plays an important role in the suppression, the persistence and the reentrance of pairing. In such systems, the structure of the drip-line nucleus determines the suppression and the persistence of superfluidity. The reentrance of pairing with increasing temperature leads to additional critical temperatures between the normal and superfluid phases.
Making use of the fact that the collective modes associated with the spontaneous (static and dynamic) violation of gauge invariance in atomic nuclei (pairing rotations and pairing vibrations) are amenable to a simple, quite accurate nuclear structure description (BCS and QRPA respectively), it is possible to quantitatively test the reaction mechanism which is at the basis of two-nucleon transfer reactions, specific probe of pairing in nuclei. With the help of the static and dynamic mean field spectroscopic amplitudes, taking into account successive and simultaneous transfer channels properly c…
Exclusive and inclusive $(ν_μ, μ^-), (ν_e, e^-)$ cross-sections and $μ^-$-capture rates are calculated for ^{12}C and ^{16}O using the consistent random phase approximation (RPA) and pairing model. After a pairing correction is introduced to the RPA results the flux-averaged theoretical $(ν_μ, μ^-), (ν_e, e^-)$ cross-sections and $μ^-$-capture rates in $^{12}$C are in good agreement with experiment. In particular when one takes into account the experimental error bars, the recently measured range of values for the $(ν_μ, μ^-)$ cross-section is in agreement with the present theoretical results.…
The evolution of structure property along the fission path in the superheavy nucleus $^{256}$Sg is predicted through the multi-dimensional potential-energy(or Routhian)-surface calculations,in which the phenomenological deformed Woods-Saxon potential is adopted. Calculated nuclear deformations and fission barriers for $^{256}_{106}$Sg$_{150}$ and its neighbors, e.g., $^{258,260}$Sg, $^{254}$Rf and $^{252}$No are presented and compared with other theoretical results. A series of energy maps and curves are provided and used to evaluate the corresponding shape-instability properties, especially i…
The non-relativistic Skyrme energy density functional (EDF) based collective Hamiltonian, that takes into account dynamical correlations related to the restoration of broken symmetries and fluctuations of quadrupole collective variables, is applied to quantitatively study the impurity effect of $Λ$ hyperon on the collectivity of $^{44}$S. Several Skyrme forces for both the nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) and $Λ$-nucleon ($ΛN$) interactions are used. The influence of pairing strengths on the polarization effect of $Λ$ hyperon is also examined. It is found that although these Skyrme forces with different…
For studying the collective pairing excitations of nuclei, the two-nucleon transfer reactions in superfluid nuclei (the pairing gap of the ground state is not zero), in particular, the (p,t) reaction, are of the greatest interest. A simple model of monopole pairing excitations in superfluid nuclei on the basis of the semiclassical time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov theory in the limit of small amplitudes is considered. Using the anomalous density response function, the monopole pairing mode in the energy region of double pairing gap and the variation of the pairing gap associated with this…
Matter radii of the $^{34-40}$Mg nuclei are investigated by self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations assuming the axial symmetry. With the semi-realistic M3Y-P6 interaction, the $N$-dependence of the matter radii observed in the experiments is reproduced excellently. Both the pairing and the deformation play significant roles in an intertwined manner. The $^{35}$Mg nucleus has a smaller radius than the neighboring even-$N$ nuclei, which is attributed to its smaller deformation. In contrast, a neutron halo is obtained in $^{37}$Mg. We point out that, in contrast to the pairing anti-…
An essentially "complete" description of the low-energy nuclear structure of the superfluid nucleus $^{120}$Sn and of its odd-$A$ neighbors is provided by the observations carried out with the help of Coulomb excitation and of one-- and of two-- particle transfer reactions, specific probes of vibrations, quasiparticle and pairing degrees of freedom respectively, and of their mutual couplings. These experimental findings are used to stringently test the predictions of a similarly "complete" description of $^{119,120,121}$Sn carried out in terms of elementary modes of excitation which, through t…
The newly observed isomer and ground-state band in the odd-Z neutron-rich rare-earth nucleus $^{163}$Eu are investigated by using the cranked shell model (CSM) with pairing treated by the particle-number conserving (PNC) method. This is the first time detailed theoretical investigations are performed of the observed $964(1)$ keV isomer and ground-state rotational band in $^{163}$Eu. The experimental data are reproduced very well by the theoretical results. The configuration of the $964(1)$ keV isomer is assigned as the three-particle state $\frac{13}{2}^{-}(ν\frac{7}{2}^{+}[633]\otimesν\frac{1…
Recent results are reported showing the effects of thermal pairing in highly excited nuclei. It is demonstrated that thermal pairing included in the phonon damping model (PDM) is responsible for the nearly constant width of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) at low temperature $T <$ 1 MeV. It is also shown that the enhancement observed in the recent experimentally extracted nuclear level densities in $^{104}$Pd at low excitation energy and various angular momenta is the first experimental evidence of the pairing reentrance in finite (hot rotating) nuclei. In the study of GDR in highly excited nu…
Sensitivity of two-proton emitting decay to nuclear pairing correlation is discussed within a time-dependent three-body model. We focus on the $^6$Be nucleus assuming $α+ p + p$ configuration, and its decay process is described as a time-evolution of the three-body resonance state. For a proton-proton subsystem, a schematic density-dependent contact (SDDC) pairing model is employed. From the time-dependent calculation, we observed the exponential decay rule of a two-proton emission. It is shown that the density dependence does not play a major role in determining the decay width, which can be …
Paring correlations in weakly bound nuclei on the edge of neutron drip line is studied by using a three-body model. A density-dependent contact interaction is employed to calculate the ground state of halo nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li, as well as a skin nucleus $^{24}$O. Dipole excitations in these nuclei are also studied within the same model. We point out that the di-neutron type correlation plays a dominant role in the halo nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li having the coupled spin of the two neutrons $S$=0, while the correlation similar to the BCS type is important in $^{24}$O. Contributions o…
The isoscalar $η$ and $η'$ mesons are special in QCD, being linked both to chiral symmetry and to non-perturbative glue associated with the axial anomaly. The properties of these mesons in medium are sensitive to how these dynamics work in the nuclear environment. In contrast to pionic and kaonic atoms which are mainly bound by the Coulomb interaction with some corrections due to the strong force (Coulomb assisted binding), the $η$ and $η'$ as neutral mesons can only be bound by the strong interaction. Is this interaction strong enough? This topic has inspired a vigorous program of experiments…
A linear correlation is found between the magnitude of nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations and the nuclear binding energy per nucleon with pairing energy removed. By using this relation, the strengths of nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations of some unmeasured nuclei are predicted. Discussions on nucleon-nucleon pairing energy and nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations are made. The found nuclear dependence of nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations may shed some lights on the short-range structure of nucleus.
