We propose geometrical methods for constructing square 01-matrices with the same number n of units in every row and column, and such that any two rows of the matrix contain at most one unit in common. These matrices are equivalent to n-regular bipartite graphs without 4-cycles, and therefore can be used for the construction of efficient bipartite-graph codes such that both the classes of its vertices are associated with local constraints. We significantly extend the region of parameters m,n for which there exist an n-regular bipartite graph with 2m vertices and without 4-cycles. In that way we essentially increase the region of lengths and rates of the corresponding bipartite-graph codes. Many new matrices are either circulant or consist of circulant submatrices: this provides code parity-check matrices consisting of circulant submatrices, and hence quasi-cyclic bipartite-graph codes with simple implementation.
This work considers new entropy-based proofs of some known, or otherwise refined, combinatorial bounds for bipartite graphs. These include upper bounds on the number of the independent sets, lower bounds on the minimal number of colors in constrained edge coloring, and lower bounds on the number of walks of a given length in bipartite graphs. The proofs of these combinatorial results rely on basic properties of the Shannon entropy.
In this paper, we obtain a combinatorial formula for computing the Betti numbers in the linear strand of edge ideals of bipartite Kneser graphs. We deduce lower and upper bounds for regularity of powers of edge ideals of these graphs in terms of associated combinatorial data and show that the lower bound is attained in some cases. Also, we obtain bounds on the projective dimension of edge ideals of these graphs in terms of combinatorial data.
Using the theory of combinatorial species, we compute the cycle index for bipartite graphs, which we use to count unlabeled bipartite graphs and bipartite blocks.
To a given nonsingular triangular matrix A with entries from a ring, we associate a weighted bipartite graph G(A) and give a combinatorial description of the inverse of A by employing paths in G(A). Under a certain condition, nonsingular triangular matrices A such that A and A^{-1} have the same zero-nonzero pattern are characterized. A combinatorial construction is given to construct outer inverses of the adjacency matrix of a weighted tree.
In a breakthrough work, Marcus-Spielman-Srivastava recently showed that every $d$-regular bipartite Ramanujan graph has a 2-lift that is also $d$-regular bipartite Ramanujan. As a consequence, a straightforward iterative brute-force search algorithm leads to the construction of a $d$-regular bipartite Ramanujan graph on $N$ vertices in time $2^{O(dN)}$. Shift $k$-lifts studied by Agarwal-Kolla-Madan lead to a natural approach for constructing Ramanujan graphs more efficiently. The number of possible shift $k$-lifts of a $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph is $k^{nd/2}$. Suppose the following holds fo…
We introduce a functorial construction which, from a monoid, produces a set-operad. We obtain new (symmetric or not) operads as suboperads or quotients of the operad obtained from the additive monoid. These involve various familiar combinatorial objects: parking functions, packed words, planar rooted trees, generalized Dyck paths, Schröder trees, Motzkin paths, integer compositions, directed animals, etc. We also retrieve some known operads: the magmatic operad, the commutative associative operad, and the diassociative operad.
In this work, we propose an optimization approach for constructing various classes of circulant combinatorial designs that can be defined in terms of autocorrelations. The problem is formulated as a so-called feasibility problem having three sets, to which the Douglas-Rachford projection algorithm is applied. The approach is illustrated on three different classes of circulant combinatorial designs: circulant weighing matrices, D-optimal matrices, and Hadamard matrices with two circulant cores. Furthermore, we explicitly construct two new circulant weighing matrices, a $CW(126,64)$ and a $CW(19…
The game INFLUENCE is a scoring combinatorial game that has been introduced in 2020 by Duchene et al. It is a good representative of Milnor's universe of scoring games, i.e. games where it is never interesting for a player to miss his turn. New general results are first given for this universe, by transposing the notions of mean and temperature derived from non-scoring combinatorial games. Such results are then applied to INFLUENCE to refine the case of unions of segments. The computational complexity of the score of the game is also solved and proved to be PSPACE-complete. We finally focus on…
We focus in this paper on edge ideals associated to bipartite graphs and give a combinatorial characterization of those having regularity 3. When the regularity is strictly bigger than 3, we determine the first step $i$ in the minimal graded free resolution where there exists a minimal generator of degree $>i+3$, show that at this step the highest degree of a minimal generator is $i+4$, and determine the value of the corresponding graded Betti number $β_{i,i+4}$ in terms of the combinatorics of the associated bipartite graph. The results can then be easily extended to the non-squarefree case t…
In this paper we introduce the circuit diameter of polyhedra, which is always bounded from above by the combinatorial diameter. We consider dual transportation polyhedra defined on general bipartite graphs. For complete $M{\times}N$ bipartite graphs the Hirsch bound $(M{-}1)(N{-}1)$ on the combinatorial diameter is a known tight bound (Balinski, 1984). For the circuit diameter we show the much stronger bound $M{+}N{-}2$ for all dual transportation polyhedra defined on arbitrary bipartite graphs with $M{+}N$ nodes.

We prove a sharp upper bound for the number of high degree differences in bipartite graphs: let $ (U, V, E)$ be a bipartite graph with $U=\{u_1, u_2, \dots, u_n\}$ and $V=\{v_1, v_2, \dots, v_n\}$; for $n\ge k>\frac{n}{2}$ we show that $\sum_{1\le i,j \le n} 1 {\Big\{|\text{deg}(u_i)-\text{deg}(v_j)|\ge k}\Big\} \le 2k(n-k).$ As a direct application we show a slightly stronger, probabilistic version of this theorem and thus confirm the Burdzy-Pitman conjecture about the maximal spread of coherent and independent distributions.
Combinatorial transfer: a new method for constructing infinite families of nonabelian difference sets, partial difference sets, and relative difference sets
The regular embeddings of complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$ in orientable surfaces are classified and enumerated, and their automorphism groups and combinatorial properties are determined. The method depends on earlier classifications in the cases where $n$ is a prime power, obtained in collaboration with Du, Kwak, Nedela and Škoviera, together with results of Itô, Hall, Huppert and Wielandt on factorisable groups and on finite solvable groups.
We study the class of functions on the set of (generalized) Young diagrams arising as the number of embeddings of bipartite graphs. We give a criterion for checking when such a function is a polynomial function on Young diagrams (in the sense of Kerov and Olshanski) in terms of combinatorial properties of the corresponding bipartite graphs. Our method involves development of a differential calculus of functions on the set of generalized Young diagrams.
Given a finite simple graph one can associate the edge ideal. In this paper we prove that a graded Betti number of the edge ideal does not vanish if the original graph contains a set of complete bipartite subgraphs with some conditions. Also we give a combinatorial description for the projective dimension of the edge ideals of unmixed bipartite graphs.
One can associate to a bipartite graph a so-called edge ring whose spectrum is an affine normal toric variety. We characterize the faces of the (edge) cone associated to this toric variety in terms of some independent sets of the bipartite graph. By applying to this characterization the combinatorial study of deformations of toric varieties by Altmann, we present certain criteria for their rigidity purely in terms of graphs.
A number of recent works have used a variety of combinatorial constructions to derive Tanner graphs for LDPC codes and some of these have been shown to perform well in terms of their probability of error curves and error floors. Such graphs are bipartite and many of these constructions yield biregular graphs where the degree of left vertices is a constant $c+1$ and that of the right vertices is a constant $d+1$. Such graphs are termed $(c+1,d+1)$ biregular bipartite graphs here. One property of interest in such work is the girth of the graph and the number of short cycles in the graph, cycles …
We classify the bipartite graphs $G$ whose binomial edge ideal $J_G$ is Cohen-Macaulay. The connected components of such graphs can be obtained by gluing a finite number of basic blocks with two operations. In this context we prove the converse of a well-known result due to Hartshorne, showing that the Cohen-Macaulayness of these ideals is equivalent to the connectedness of their dual graphs. We study interesting properties also for non-bipartite graphs and in the unmixed case, constructing classes of bipartite graphs with $J_G$ unmixed and not Cohen-Macaulay.
In this paper we consider the separability problem for bipartite quantum states arising from graphs. Earlier it was proved that the degree criterion is the graph-theoretic counterpart of the familiar positive partial transpose criterion for separability, although there are entangled states with positive partial transpose for which the degree criterion fails. Here we introduce the concept of partially symmetric graphs and degree symmetric graphs by using the well-known concept of partial transposition of a graph and degree criteria, respectively. Thus, we provide classes of bipartite separable …
We give a review of modern approaches to constructing formal solutions to integrable hierarchies of mathematical physics, whose coefficients are answers to various enumerative problems. The relationship between these approaches and combinatorics of symmetric groups and their representations is explained. Applications of the results to constructing efficient computations in problems related to models of quantum field theories are given.
We present bipartiteSUSY, a Mathematica package designed to perform calculations for physical theories based on bipartite graphs. In particular, the package can employ the recently developed arsenal of techniques surrounding on-shell diagrams in N=4 SYM scattering amplitudes, including those for non-planar diagrams, with particular attention to computational speed. It also contains a host of tools for computations in N=1 Bipartite Field Theories, which utilize the same bipartite graphs. Through the use of an interactive graphical tool, it is possible to draw the desired diagrams on the screen …
In this paper, we introduce a corresponding between bipartite graphs with a perfect matching and digraphs, which implicates an equivalent relation between the extendibility of bipartite graphs and the strongly connectivity of digraphs. Such an equivalent relation explains the similar results on $k$-extendable bipartite graphs and $k$-strong digraphs. We also study the relation among $k$-extendable bipartite graphs, $k$-strong digraphs and combinatorial matrices. For bipartite graphs that are not 1-extendable and digraphs that are not strong, we prove that the elementary components and strong c…
In enumerative combinatorics, it is often a goal to enumerate both labeled and unlabeled structures of a given type. The theory of combinatorial species is a novel toolset which provides a rigorous foundation for dealing with the distinction between labeled and unlabeled structures. The cycle index series of a species encodes the labeled and unlabeled enumerative data of that species. Moreover, by using species operations, we are able to solve for the cycle index series of one species in terms of other, known cycle indices of other species. Section 3 is an exposition of species theory and Sect…
We consider signed graphs, i.e, graphs with positive or negative signs on their edges. We construct some families of bipartite signed graphs with only two distinct eigenvalues. This leads to constructing infinite families of regular bipartite Ramanujan graphs.

In the random geometric graph $G(n,r_n)$, $n$ vertices are placed randomly in Euclidean $d$-space and edges are added between any pair of vertices distant at most $r_n$ from each other. We establish strong laws of large numbers (LLNs) for a large class of graph parameters, evaluated for $G(n,r_n)$ in the thermodynamic limit with $nr_n^d =$ const., and also in the dense limit with $n r_n^d \to \infty$, $r_n \to 0$. Examples include domination number, independence number, clique-covering number, eternal domination number and triangle packing number. The general theory is based on certain subaddi…
We prove that there exist infinite families of regular bipartite Ramanujan graphs of every degree bigger than 2. We do this by proving a variant of a conjecture of Bilu and Linial about the existence of good 2-lifts of every graph. We also establish the existence of infinite families of `irregular Ramanujan' graphs, whose eigenvalues are bounded by the spectral radius of their universal cover. Such families were conjectured to exist by Linial and others. In particular, we prove the existence of infinite families of (c,d)-biregular bipartite graphs with all non-trivial eigenvalues bounded by sq…
Let $I(G)$ be the edge ideal of a simple graph $G$. In this paper, we will give sufficient and necessary combinatorial conditions of $G$ in which the second symbolic and ordinary power of its edge ideal are Cohen-Macaulay (resp. Buchsbaum, generalized Cohen-Macaulay). As an application of our results, we will classify all bipartite graphs in which the second (symbolic) powers are Cohen-Macaulay (resp. Buchsbaum, generalized Cohen-Macaulay).
The paper consider an equivalence relation in the set of vertices of a bipartite graph. Some numerical characteristics showing the cardinality of equivalence classes are introduced. A combinatorial identity that is in relationship to these characteristics of the set of all bipartite graphs of the type $g=\langle R_g \cup C_g, E_g \rangle$ is formulated and proved, where $V=R_g \cup C_g$ is the set of vertices, $E_g$ is the set of edges of the graph $g$, $ |R_g |=m\ge 1$, $|C_g |= n\ge 1$, $|E_g |=k\ge 0$, $m,n$ and $k$ are integers.
With the current burst of network theory (especially in connection with social and biological networks) there is a renewed interest on realizations of given degree sequences. In this paper we propose an essentially new degree sequence problem: we want to find graphical realizations of a given degree sequence on labeled vertices, where certain would-be edges are {\em forbidden}. Then we want to sample uniformly and efficiently all these possible realizations. (This problem can be considered as a special case of Tutte's $f$-factor problem, however it has a favorable sampling speed.) We solve thi…
Bipartite field theories (BFTs) are a new class of 4d N=1 quantum field theories defined by bipartite graphs on bordered Riemann surfaces. In this paper we derive, purely in terms of the gauge theory, the cluster transformations of face weights under square moves in the graph. In this context, we obtain them by connecting regular parametrizations of the master space of the associated BFTs. For BFTs on a disk, these transformations follow from the properties of coordinates in the Grassmannian. This represents a new addition to the list of combinatorial objects for the Grassmannian, such as matc…
Kim defined a very general combinatorial abstraction of the diameter of polytopes called subset partition graphs to study how certain combinatorial properties of such graphs may be achieved in lower bound constructions. Using Lovász' Local Lemma, we give a general randomized construction for subset partition graphs satisfying strong adjacency and end-point count properties. This can be used as a building block to conceptually simplify the constructions given in [Kim11]. We also use our method to construct abstract spindles, an analogy to the spindles used by Santos to disprove the Hirsch conje…
We initiate the study of applying the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz to the DP-coloring of graphs even though, as is well-known, the Alon-Tarsi theorem does not apply to DP-coloring. We define the notion of good covers of prime order which allows us to apply the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz to DP-coloring. We apply these tools to DP-coloring of the cones of certain bipartite graphs and uniquely 3-colorable graphs. We also extend a result of Akbari, Mirrokni, and Sadjad (2006) on unique list colorability to the context of DP-coloring. We establish a sufficient algebraic condition for a graph $G…
We examine the family of nestohedra resulting from the complete bipartite graph through the medium of a generating function and demonstrate some of their combinatorial invariants.
An edge-coloring of a graph $G$ with colors $1,...,t$ is called an interval $t$-coloring if all colors are used, and the colors of edges incident to any vertex of $G$ are distinct and form an interval of integers. In 1991 Erdős constructed a bipartite graph with 27 vertices and maximum degree 13 which has no interval coloring. Erdős's counterexample is the smallest (in a sense of maximum degree) known bipartite graph which is not interval colorable. On the other hand, in 1992 Hansen showed that all bipartite graphs with maximum degree at most 3 have an interval coloring. In this paper we give …
We show that if $\gS=(V,E)$ is a regular bipartite graph for which the expansion of subsets of a single parity of $V$ is reasonably good and which satisfies a certain local condition (that the union of the neighbourhoods of adjacent vertices does not contain too many pairwise non-adjacent vertices), and if $\cM$ is a Markov chain on the set of proper 3-colourings of $\gS$ which updates the colour of at most $ρ|V|$ vertices at each step and whose stationary distribution is uniform, then for $ρ\approx .22$ and $d$ sufficiently large the convergence to stationarity of $\cM$ is (essentially) expon…
Let $G$ be a finite connected simple graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. We show that, when $G$ is not bipartite, the number of $4$-cycles contained in $G$ is at most $\binom{m-n+1}{2}$. We further provide a short combinatorial proof of the bound $\binom{m-n+2}{2}$ which holds for bipartite graphs.
Binary classification problems can be naturally modeled as bipartite graphs, where we attempt to classify right nodes based on their left adjacencies. We consider the case of labeled bipartite graphs in which some labels and edges are not trustworthy. Our goal is to reduce noise by identifying and fixing these labels and edges. We first propose a geometric technique for generating random graph instances with untrustworthy labels and analyze the resulting graph properties. We focus on generating graphs which reflect real-world data, where degree and label frequencies follow power law distributi…
