The massless supermultiplet of eleven-dimensional supergravity can be generated from the decomposition of certain representation of the exceptional Lie group F4 into those of its maximal compact subgroup Spin(9). In an earlier paper, a dynamical Kaluza-Klein origin of this observation is proposed with internal space the Cayley plane, OP2, and topological aspects are explored. In this paper we consider the geometric aspects and characterize the corresponding forms which contribute to the action as well as cohomology classes, including torsion, which contribute to the partition function. This involves constructions with bilinear forms. The compatibility with various string theories are discussed, including reduction to loop bundles in ten dimensions.
We present aspects of the component description of linearized Nordstr\" om Supergravity in eleven and ten dimensions. The presentation includes low order component fields in the supermultiplet, the supersymmetry variations of the scalar graviton and gravitino trace, their supercovariantized field strengths, and the supersymmetry commutator algebra of these theories.
We review the relation between 4n-dimensional quaternion-Kahler metrics with n+1 abelian isometries and superconformal theories of n+1 tensor supermultiplets. As an application we construct the class of eight-dimensional quaternion-Kahler metrics with three abelian isometries in terms of a single function obeying a set of linear second-order partial differential equations.
We examine non-gravitational minimal supermultiplets which are based on the tensor gauge fields appearing as matter fields in exceptional generalised geometry. When possible, off-shell multiplets are given. The fields in the multiplets describe non-gravitational parts of the internal dynamics of compactifications of M-theory. In flat backgrounds, they enjoy a global U-duality symmetry, but also provide multiplets with a possibility of coupling to a generalised exceptional geometry.
We construct the general action for $N=4, d=1$ nonlinear supermultiplet including the most general interaction terms which depend on the arbitrary function $h$ obeying the Laplace equation on $S^3$. We find the bosonic field $B$ which depends on the components of nonlinear supermultiplet and transforms as a full time derivative under N=4 supersymmetry. The most general interaction is generated just by a Fayet-Iliopoulos term built from this auxiliary component. Being transformed through a full time derivative under $N=4, d=1$ supersymmetry, this auxiliary component $B$ may be dualized into a f…
Introduction of supersymmetry into the noncommutative geometry is investigated. We propose a new Dirac operator which plays the role of the metric over the extended algebra of chiral and antichiral supermultiplets and is invariant under the supersymmetry transformations. Inner automorphisms for the algebra generate vector supermultiplets as an internal fluctuation of the metric. We show that the supersymmetric QCD action for these supermultiplets is correctly given by the spectral action principle.
Some massless supermultiplets appear as the trivial solution of Kostant's equation, a Dirac-like equation over special cosets. We study two examples; one over the coset SU(3)/SU(2) times U(1) contains the N=2 hypermultiplet in (3+1) dimensions with U(1) as helicity; the other over the coset F_4/SO(9) describes the N=1 supermultiplet in eleven dimensions, where SO(9) is the light-cone little group. We present the general solutions to Kostant's equation for both cases; they describe massless physical states of arbitrary spins which display the same relations as the fields in the supermultiplets.…
Starting from quaternionic N=8 supersymmetric mechanics we perform a reduction over a bosonic radial variable, ending up with a nonlinear off-shell supermultiplet with three bosonic end eight fermionic physical degrees of freedom. The geometry of the bosonic sector of the most general sigma-model type action is described by an arbitrary function obeying the three dimensional Laplace equation on the sphere S^3. Among the bosonic components of this new supermultiplet there is a constant which gives rise to potential terms. After dualization of this constant one may come back to the supermultiple…
The worldvolume theory of a D0-brane contains a multiplet of fermions which can couple to background spacetime fields. This coupling implies that a D0-brane may possess multipole moments with respect to the various type IIA supergravity fields. Different such polarization states of the D0-brane will thus generate different long-range supergravity fields, and the corresponding semi-classical supergravity solutions will have different geometries. In this paper, we reconsider such solutions from an eleven-dimensional perspective. We thus begin by deriving the ``superpartners'' of the eleven-dimen…
Pure backgrounds are a natural generalization of supersymmetric Calabi-Yau compactifications in the presence of flux. They are described in the language of generalized SU(d) x SU(d) structures and generalized complex geometry, and they exhibit some interesting general patterns: the internal manifold is generalized Calabi-Yau, while the Ramond-Ramond flux is exact in a precise sense discussed in this paper. We have shown that although these two characteristics do persist in the case of generic ten-dimensional Euclidean type II pure backgrounds, they do not capture the full content of supersymme…
We construct the non-linear realisation of E11 and its first fundamental representation in eleven dimensions at low levels. The fields depend on the usual coordinates of space-time as well as two form and five form coordinates. We derive the terms in the dynamics that contain the three form and six form fields and show that when we restricted their field dependence to be only on the usual space-time we recover the correct self-duality relation. Should this result generalise to the gravity fields then the non-linear realisation is an extension of the maximal supergravity theory, as previously c…
We show that the space of gravitational spinors in eleven dimensions, defined by equations $Γ_{αβ}^iλ^αλ^β=0$ admits a desingularization with nice geometric properties. In particular the desingularization fibers over the isotropic Grassmannian OGr(2,11). This enables us to recast equations of linearized eleven-dimensional supergravity adapted to 3-form potential into Cauchy-Riemann equations on a super extension of isotropic Grassmannian OGr(2,11).
In this paper we study eleven-dimensional supergravity in its most general form. This is done by implementing manifest supersymmetry (and Lorentz invariance) through the use of the geometric (torsion and curvature) superspace Bianchi identities. These identities are solved to linear order in a deformation parameter introduced via the dimension zero supertorsion given in its most general form. The theory so obtained is referred to as the deformed theory (to avoid the previously used term "off-shell"). An important by-product of this result is that any higher derivative correction to ordinary su…
Two years ago, we found the supersymmetric counterpart of the spectral triple which specified noncommutative geometry. Based on the triple, we derived gauge vector supermultiplets, Higgs supermultiplets of the minimum supersymmetric standard model and its action. However, unlike the famous theories of Connes and his co-workers, the action does not couple to gravity. In this paper, we obtain the supersymmetric Dirac operator $\mathcal{D}_M^{(SG)}$ on the Riemann-Cartan curved space replacing derivatives which appear in that of the triple with the covariant derivatives of general coordinate tran…
We extend naturally the spectral triple which define noncommutative geometry (NCG) in order to incorporate supersymmetry and obtain supersymmetric Dirac operator D_M which acts on Minkowskian manifold. Inversely, we can consider the projection which reducts D_M to $\not{D}$, the Dirac operator of the original spectral triple. We investigate properties of the Dirac operator, some of which are inherited from the original Dirac operator. Z/2 grading and real structure are also supersymmetrically extended. Using supersymmetric invariant product, the kinematic terms of chiral and antichiral supermu…
We have obtained the supersymmetric extension of spectral triple which specify a noncommutative geometry(NCG). We assume that the functional space H constitutes of wave functions of matter fields and their superpartners included in the minimum supersymmetric standard model(MSSM). We introduce the internal fluctuations to the Dirac operator on the manifold as well as on the finite space by elements of the algebra A in the triple. So, we obtain not only the vector supermultiplets which meditate SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)_Y gauge degrees of freedom but also Higgs supermultiplets which appear in MSSM on the…
Off-shell higher spin N=2 supermultiplets in three spacetime dimensions (3D) are presented in this paper. We propose gauge prepotentials for higher spin superconformal gravity and construct the corresponding gauge-invariant field strengths, which are proved to be conformal primary superfields. These field strengths are higher spin generalisations of the (linearised) N=2 super-Cotton tensor, which controls the superspace geometry of conformal supergravity. We also construct the higher spin extensions of the linearised N=2 conformal supergravity action. We provide two dually equivalent off-shell…
We derive the couplings of the 3-form supermultiplet to the general supergravity-matter-Yang-Mills system. Based on the methods of superspace geometry, we identify component fields, establish their supergravity transformations and construct invariant component field actions. Two specific applications are adressed: the appearance of fundamental 3-forms in the context of strong-weak duality and the use of the 3-form supermultiplets to describe effective degrees of freedom relevant to the mechanism of gaugino condensation.
We discuss the reduction of the eleven-dimensional M-theory effective Lagrangian, considering first compactification from eleven to five dimensions on a Calabi-Yau manifold, followed by reduction to four dimensions on an S_1/Z_2 line segment at a larger distance scale. The Calabi-Yau geometry leads to a structure of the five-dimensional Lagrangian that has more freedom than the eleven-dimensional theory. In five dimensions one obtains a non-linear sigma-model coupled to gravity, which implies non-trivial dynamics for the scalar moduli fields in the bulk of the Z_2 orbifold. We discuss solution…
We construct IIA GS superstring action on the ten-dimensional pp-wave background, which arises as the compactification of eleven-dimensional pp-wave geometry along the isometry direction. The background geometry has 24 Killing spinors and among them, 16 components correspond to the non-linearly realized kinematical supersymmetry in the string action. The remaining eight components are linearly realized and shown to be independent of x^+ coordinate, which is identified with the world-sheet time coordinate of the string action in the light-cone gauge. The resultant dynamical N=(4,4) supersymmetr…
The classical probe dynamics of the eleven-dimensional massless superparticles in the background geometry produced by N source M-momenta is investigated in the framework of N-sector DLCQ supergravity. We expand the probe action up to the two fermion terms and find that the fermionic contributions are the spin-orbit couplings, which precisely agree with the matrix theory calculations. We comment on the lack of non-perturbative corrections in the one-loop matrix quantum mechanics effective action and its compatibility with the supergravity analysis.
By following Seiberg's prescriptions on DLCQ of $M$ theory, we give the background geometries of DLCQ supergravity associated with $N$ sector of DLCQ of $M$ theory on $T^p$ with vanishingly small radii. Most of these are the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes and spheres, which have been found as the spontaneous compactifications of eleven dimensional supergravity long time ago and also are revisited recently by Maldacena by considering the near horizon geometry of various D-branes in appropriate limit. Those geometries are maximally symmetric and have full 32 supersymmetries of eleven dimen…
We reformulate the Hamiltonian form of bosonic eleven dimensional supergravity in terms of an object that unifies the three-form and the metric. For the case of four spatial dimensions, the duality group is manifest and the metric and C-field are on an equal footing even though no dimensional reduction is required for our results to hold. One may also describe our results using the generalized geometry that emerges from membrane duality. The relationship between the twisted Courant algebra and the gauge symmetries of eleven dimensional supergravity are described in detail.
Recently, we found the supersymmetric counterpart of the spectral triple. When we restrict the representation space to the fermionic functions of matter fields, the counterpart which we name "the triple" reduces to the original spectral triple which defines noncommutative geometry. We see that the fluctuation to the supersymmetric Dirac operator induced by algebra in the triple generates vector supermultiplet which mediates gauge interaction. Following the supersymmetric version of spectral action principle, we calculate the heat kernel expansion of the square of fluctuated Dirac operator and …
Extending previous work on generalised geometry, we explicitly construct an E7-valued vielbein in eleven dimensions that encompasses the scalar bosonic degrees of freedom of D=11 supergravity, by identifying new "generalised vielbeine" in eleven dimensions associated with the dual 6-form potential and the dual graviton. By maintaining full on-shell equivalence with the original theory at every step, our construction altogether avoids the constraints usually encountered in other approaches to generalised geometry and, as a side product, also furnishes the non-linear ansatz for the dual (magneti…
For supersymmetric spacetimes in eleven dimensions admitting a null Killing spinor, a set of explicit necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of any number of arbitrary additional Killing spinors is derived. The necessary and sufficient conditions are comprised of algebraic relationships, linear in the spinorial components, between the spinorial components and their first derivatives, and the components of the spin connection and four-form. The integrability conditions for the Killing spinor equation are also analysed in detail, to determine which components of the field equation…
We attempt to reformulate eleven dimensional supergravity in terms of an object that unifies the three-form and the metric and makes the M-theory duality group manifest. This short note deals with the case of where the U-duality group SO(5,5) acts in five spatial dimensions.
The equations of motion and the Bianchi identity of the C-field in M-theory are encoded in terms of the signature operator. We then reformulate the topological part of the action in M-theory using the signature, which leads to connections to the geometry of the underlying manifold, including positive scalar curvature. This results in a variation on the miraculous cancellation formula of Alvarez-Gaumé and Witten in twelve dimensions and leads naturally to the Kreck-Stolz s-invariant in eleven dimensions. Hence M-theory detects diffeomorphism type of eleven-dimensional (and seven-dimensional) ma…
We study various aspects of N=(4,4) type IIA GS superstring theory in the pp-wave background, which arises as the compactification of maximally supersymmetric eleven-dimensional pp-wave geometry along the spacelike isometry direction. We show the supersymmetry algebra of N=(4,4) worldsheet supersymmetry as well as non-linearly realized supersymmetry. We also give quantization of closed string and open string incorporating various boundary conditions. From the open string boundary conditions, we find configurations of D-branes which preserve half the supersymmetries. Among these we identify D4 …
In this review we discuss hidden symmetries of toroidal compactifications of eleven-dimensional supergravity. We recall alternative versions of this theory which exhibit traces of the hidden symmetries when still retaining the massive Kaluza-Klein states. We reconsider them in the broader perspective of M-theory which incorporates a more extended variety of BPS states. We also argue for a new geometry that may underly these theories. All our arguments point towards an extension of the number of space-time coordinates beyond eleven.
We discuss the structure of "exceptional generalised geometry" (EGG), an extension of Hitchin's generalised geometry that provides a unified geometrical description of backgrounds in eleven-dimensional supergravity. On a d-dimensional background, as first described by Hull, the action of the generalised geometrical O(d,d) symmetry group is replaced in EGG by the exceptional U-duality group E_d(d). The metric and form-field degrees of freedom combine into a single geometrical object, so that EGG naturally describes generic backgrounds with flux, and there is an EGG analogue of the Courant brack…
We review some aspects of the spinorial geometry approach to the classification of supersymmetric solutions of supergravity theories. In particular, we explain how spinorial geometry can be used to express the Killing spinor equations in terms of a linear system for the fluxes and the geometry of spacetime. The solutions of this linear system express some of the fluxes in terms of the spacetime geometry and determine the conditions on the spacetime geometry imposed by supersymmetry. We also present some of the recent applications like the classification of maximally supersymmetric G-background…
In three dimensions, a `master theory' for all Thurston geometries requires imaginary flux. However, these geometries can be obtained from physical three-dimensional theories with various additional scalar fields, which can be interpreted as moduli in various compactifications of a higher-dimensional `master theory'. Three Thurston geometries are of the form N_2 x S^1, where N_2 denotes a two-dimensional Riemannian space of constant curvature. This enables us to twist these spaces, via T-duality, into other Thurston geometries as a U(1) bundle over N_2. In this way, Hopf T-duality relates all …

Some aspects of the geometry of superembeddings and its application to supersymmetric extended objects are discussed. In particular, the embeddings of (3|16) and (6|16) dimensional superspaces into (11|32) dimensional superspace, corresponding to supermembranes and superfivebranes in eleven dimensions, are treated in some detail.
We derive the gravitational dynamics of the tensorial geometry which underlies the most general linear theory of electrodynamics that features weak birefringence in vacuo. This derivation is performed by way of gravitational closure, which is a mechanism that employs the causal structure of any canonically quantizable matter dynamics on some tensorial spacetime geometry in order to derive canonical dynamics for the latter. The resulting eleven-parameter family of weak gravitational field equations allows to predict where vacuum birefringence will occur, if there is any.
We have studied free higher spin gauge fields through an investigation of their Hamiltonian dynamics. Over a flat space-time, their Hamiltonian constraints were identified and solved through the introduction of prepotentials, enjoying both linearized generalized diffeomorphism and linearized generalized Weyl rescaling gauge invariance, motivating our study of conformal invariants for higher spins. We built these with the Cotton tensor, whose properties (tracelessness, symmetry, divergencelessness; completeness, invariance) we established. With these geometric tools, a first order action was wr…
We propose a new method to solve the Killing spinor equations of eleven-dimensional supergravity based on a description of spinors in terms of forms and on the Spin(1,10) gauge symmetry of the supercovariant derivative. We give the canonical form of Killing spinors for N=2 backgrounds provided that one of the spinors represents the orbit of Spin(1,10) with stability subgroup SU(5). We directly solve the Killing spinor equations of N=1 and some N=2, N=3 and N=4 backgrounds. In the N=2 case, we investigate backgrounds with SU(5) and SU(4) invariant Killing spinors and compute the associated spac…
