We present the first measurements of identified hadron production, azimuthal anisotropy, and pion interferometry from Au+Au collisions below the nominal injection energy at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. The data were collected using the large acceptance STAR detector at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 9.2 GeV from a test run of the collider in the year 2008. Midrapidity results on multiplicity density (dN/dy) in rapidity (y), average transverse momentum (<pT>), particle ratios, elliptic flow, and HBT radii are consistent with the corresponding results at similar $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ from fixed target experiments. Directed flow measurements are presented for both midrapidity and forward rapidity regions. Furthermore the collision centrality dependence of identified particle dN/dy, <pT>, and particle ratios are discussed. These results also demonstrate the readiness of the STAR detector to undertake the proposed QCD critical point search and the exploration of the QCD phase diagram at RHIC.
The high-statistics data sets collected by the LHC experiments during the heavy-ion runs allow for a detailed study of the azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles. This report presents the selected results of $v_{n}$ measured in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV and Xe+Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.44$ TeV, with emphasis on the higher order Fourier coefficients, $v_{n}$, sensitive to initial state fluctuations of the medium created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions.
In a relativistic heavy ion collision, heavy flavor (charm and bottom) quarks are mostly created via hard processes at the early stage of the collisions. We present the latest results of the azimuthal anisotropy coefficients $v_{\text{n}}$ for prompt and nonprompt $\text{D}^{0}$ mesons in PbPb, pPb, and pp collisions from the CMS experiment. The studies are about collectivity phenomena in smaller systems (pp and pPb collisions), searches for the effects of very strong electromagnetic fields created in the initial stages of ultrarelativistic PbPb collisions, and charm quark energy loss in the q…
In these proceedings, we present the second order ($v_{2}$) and the third order ($v_{3}$) azimuthal anisotropy measurements of strange and multi-strange hadrons such as $K^{0}_{S}$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$, $ϕ$, $Ξ^{-}$, $\barΞ^{+}$, $Ω^{-}$, $\barΩ^{+}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 27 and 54.4 GeV at STAR. The centrality dependence of $v_{2}$ and $v_{3}$ as well as the number of constituent quark scaling (NCQ scaling) for all the particles mentioned above are discussed. The ratio of $v_{2}$ of $ϕ$ mesons to that of $\bar{p}$ is presented at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 54.4 GeV which gives a hint of ma…
We review topics related to the first moment of azimuthal anisotropy ($v_1$), commonly known as directed flow, focusing on both charged particles and identified particles from heavy-ion collisions. Beam energies from the highest available, at the CERN LHC, down to projectile kinetic energies per nucleon of a few GeV per nucleon, as studied in experiments at the Brookhaven AGS, fall within our scope. We focus on experimental measurements and on theoretical work where direct comparisons with experiment have been emphasized. The physics addressed or potentially addressed by this review topic incl…
The measurement of J/{psi} azimuthal anisotropy is presented as a function of transverse momentum for different centralities in Au+Au collisions at {sqrt{s_{NN}}} = 200 GeV. The measured J/{psi} elliptic flow is consistent with zero within errors for transverse momentum between 2 and 10 GeV/c. Our measurement suggests that J/{psi} with relatively large transverse momentum are not dominantly produced by coalescence from thermalized charm quarks, when comparing to model calculations.
Transverse spherocity is an event shape observable having a very unique capability to separate the events based on their geometrical shapes. Recent results from experiments at the LHC suggest that transverse spherocity is an important event classifier in small collision systems. In this work, we use transverse spherocity for the first time in heavy-ion collisions and perform an extensive study on azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles produced in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV using A Multi-Phase Transport Model (AMPT). The azimuthal anisotropy is estimated using the 2-…
In this proceedings, we have presented the invariant yield measurements of strange and multi strange hadrons such as $K^{0}_{S}$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$, $ϕ$, $Ξ^{-}$, $\barΞ^{+}$, $Ω^{-}$, $\barΩ^{+}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 54.4 GeV at midrapidity ($|y|<0.5$). The second and third-order azimuthal anisotropic flow of the above mentioned particles at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 27 and 54.4 GeV are also discussed. Some of the important observables such as nuclear modification factor ($R_{CP}$), baryon to meson ratio ($Ω/ϕ$), transverse momentum dependence of $v_{2}$ and $v_{3}$ are measured. The n…
We trace the development of elliptic anisotropy (v2) via parton-parton collision history in two transport models. The parton v2 is studied as a function of the number of collisions of each parton in Au+Au and d+Au collisions at sNN =200 GeV. It is found that the majority of v2 comes from the anisotropic escape probability of partons, with no fundamental difference at low and high transverse momenta. The contribution to v2 from hydrodynamic-type collective flow is found to be small. Only when the parton-parton cross-section is set unrealistically large does this contribution start to take over.…
The azimuthal anisotropy coefficient $v_2$ of prompt D$^0$, D$^+$, D$^{*+}$ and D$_s^+$ mesons was measured in mid-central (30-50% centrality class) Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV, with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decays at mid-rapidity, $|y|<0.8$, in the transverse momentum interval $1<p_{\rm T}<24$ GeV/$c$. The measured D-meson $v_2$ has similar values as that of charged pions. The D$_s^+$ $v_2$, measured for the first time, is found to be compatible with that of non-strange D m…
The azimuthal anisotropy Fourier coefficients ($v_n$) in 8.16 TeV pPb data are extracted via long-range two-particle correlations as a function of event multiplicity and compared to corresponding results in pp and PbPb collisions. Using a four-particle cumulant technique, $v_n$ correlations are measured for the first time in pp and pPb collisions. The $v_2$ and $v_4$ coefficients are found to be positively correlated in all collision systems. For high multiplicity pPb collisions an anticorrelation of $v_2$ and $v_3$ is observed, with a similar correlation strength as in PbPb data at the same m…
Elliptic flow in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions results from the hydrodynamic response to the spatial anisotropy of the initial density profile. A long-standing problem in the interpretation of flow data is that uncertainties in the initial anisotropy are mingled with uncertainties in the response. We argue that the non-Gaussianity of flow fluctuations in small systems can be used to disentangle the initial state from the response. We apply this method to recent measurements of anisotropic flow in Pb+Pb and p+Pb collisions at the LHC. The response coefficient is found to decrease mildl…
We have studied the average charged particle density ($<$dN$_{ch}$/d$η$$>$), transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) spectra, $<$$p_{\mathrm{T}}$$>$ and azimuthal anisotropies of inclusive charged particles produced in Xe+Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV using A Multiphase Transport Model (AMPT), which includes the deformation of Xe$^{129}$ nucleus. Calculations have been performed with the string melting version of AMPT model and compared with the recent measurements from the ALICE experiment. The model results over predict the measured $<$dN$_{ch}$/d$η$$>$ for central collisions, a…
We trace the development of elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) via parton-parton collision history in two transport models. The parton $v_2$ is studied as a function of the number of collisions of each parton in Au+Au and $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV. It is found that the majority of $v_2$ comes from the anisotropic escape probability of partons, with no fundamental difference at low and high transverse momenta. The contribution to $v_2$ from hydrodynamic-type collective flow is found to be small. Only when the parton-parton cross-section is set unrealistically large does this …
Simple power counting arguments in the dilute-dense framework of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) Effective Field Theory predict that even and odd azimuthal anisotropy harmonics of two-particle correlations in proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC will respectively satisfy v^2_{2n} ~ N_{ch}^0 and v^2_{2n+1} ~ N_{ch}, where N_{ch} denotes the number of charged particles. We show that these expectations are borne out qualitatively, and even quantitatively, within systematic uncertainties, for v_2 and v_4 in comparisons with data from the ATLAS collaboration. We also observe that ATLAS data for th…
The second-order Fourier coefficients ($v_2$) characterizing the azimuthal distribution of $Υ$(1S) and $Υ$(2S) mesons arising from PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV are studied. The $Υ$ mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb$^{-1}$. The scalar product method is used to extract the $v_2$ coefficients of the azimuthal distribution. Results are reported for the rapidity range $|y|$ $\lt$ 2.4, with the transverse momentum 0 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 50 GeV/$c$, and i…
We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as $v_{2}^{\mathrm{ch~jet}}$. Jet finding is performed employing the anti-$k_{\mathrm{T}}$ algorithm with a resolution parameter $R$ = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemb…
One of the event shape observables, the transverse spherocity ($S_0$), has been studied successfully in small collision systems such as proton-proton collisions at the LHC as a tool to separate jetty and isotropic events. It has a unique capability to distinguish events based on their geometrical shapes. In this work, we report the first implementation of transverse spherocity in heavy-ion collisions using a multi-phase transport model (AMPT). We have performed an extensive study of azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles produced in heavy-ion collisions as a function of transverse spherocit…
We provide a method to correct the observed azimuthal anisotropy in heavy-ion collisions for the event plane resolution in a wide centrality bin. This new procedure is especially useful for rare particles, such as Omega baryons and J/psi mesons, which are difficult to measure in small intervals of centrality. Based on a Monte Carlo calculation with simulated v_2 and multiplicity, we show that some of the commonly used methods have a bias of up to 15%.
Azimuthal angle dependence of the pion source radii was measured applying the event shape selection at the PHENIX experiment. The measured final source eccentricity is found to be enhanced when selecting events with higher magnitude of the second-order flow vector, as well as the elliptic flow coefficient $v_{2}$. The spatial twist of the particle-emitting source was also explored using a transport model. Results indicate a possible twisted source in the final state due to the initial longitudinal fluctuations.
Heavy quarks are effective probes of the properties of the QGP created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE Collaboration measured the non-strange D-meson production in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN\,}}=5.02$ TeV. The in-medium energy loss can be studied via the nuclear modification factor measurement. The measurement of the D-meson elliptic flow, $v_2$, allows us to investigate the participation of the heavy quarks in the collective expansion of the system at low momentum and their possible thermalization in the medium. Furthermore, the Event-Shape Engineering techniq…
The CMS experiment at the LHC has measured the differential cross sections of Z bosons decaying to pairs of leptons, as functions of transverse momentum and rapidity, in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The measured Z boson elliptic azimuthal anisotropy coefficient is compatible with zero, showing that Z bosons do not experience significant final-state interactions in the medium produced in the collision. Yields of Z bosons are compared to Glauber model predictions and are found to deviate from these expectations in peripheral collisions, indicating …
The production of the prompt charmed mesons $D^0$, $D^+$ and $D^{*+}$ relative to the reaction plane was measured in Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decays at central rapidity in the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) interval of 2-16 GeV/$c$. The azimuthal anisotropy is quantified in terms of the second coefficient $v_2$ in a Fourier expansion of the D meson azimuthal distribution, and in terms of the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm …
Hadrons containing heavy quarks, i.e. charm or beauty, are unique probes of the properties of the hot and dense QCD medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. Due to their large masses, heavy quarks are produced at the initial stage of the collision, almost exclusively via hard partonic scattering processes. Therefore, they are expected to experience the full collision history propagating through the QCD medium losing energy via elastic and inelastic collisions with the medium constituents. The ALICE collaboration has measured the production of open heavy-flavour hadrons via their hadronic and s…
The PHENIX experiment discovered a large excess of low-$p_{T}$ direct photons in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV compared to reference p+p collisions, which has been attributed to thermal radiation from the medium produced in the collisions. At the same time the excess photons show a large azimuthal anisotropy, expressed as Fourier coefficients $v_{2}$ and $v_{3}$. These surprising results have not yet been fully described by theoretical models. We will present the results obtained from real photons in the electromagnetic calorimeter and photons converted on the outer shell of the Hadron Blind Det…
We report on the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy ($v_2$) of dielectrons ($e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs) at mid-rapidity from $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200$ GeV Au+Au collisions with the STAR detector at RHIC, presented as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) for different invariant-mass regions. In the mass region $M_{ee}\!<1.1$ GeV/$c^2$ the dielectron $v_2$ measurements are found to be consistent with expectations from $π^{0}$, $η$, $ω$ and $ϕ$ decay contributions. In the mass region $1.1\!<M_{ee}\!<2.9$ GeV/$c^2$, the measured dielectron $v_2$ is consistent, within experimental uncertaint…
