It is well-known that a paracompact space X is of covering dimension n if and only if any map f from X to a simplicial complex K can be pushed into its n-skeleton. We use the same idea to define dimension in the coarse category. It turns out the analog of maps f from X to K is related to asymptotically Lipschitz maps, the analog of paracompact spaces are spaces related to Yu's Property A, and the dimension coincides with Gromov's asymptotic dimension.
Lipschitz and horizontal maps from an $n$-dimensional space into the $(2n+1)$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\H^n$ are abundant, while maps from higher-dimensional spaces are much more restricted. DeJarnette-Hajłasz-Lukyanenko-Tyson constructed horizontal maps from $S^k$ to $\H^n$ which factor through $n$-spheres and showed that these maps have no smooth horizontal fillings. In this paper, however, we build on an example of Kaufman to show that these maps sometimes have Lipschitz fillings. This shows that the Lipschitz and the smooth horizontal homotopy groups of a space may differ. Conversely,…
Let $\H^n$ be the Heisenberg group of topological dimension $2n+1$. We prove that if $n$ is odd, the pair of metric spaces $(\H^n, \H^n)$ does not have the Lipschitz extension property.
This paper deals with the problem of finding bi-Lipschitz behavior in non-degenerate Lipschitz maps between metric measure spaces. Specifically, we study maps from (subsets of) Ahlfors regular PI spaces into sub-Riemannian Carnot groups. We prove that such maps have many bi-Lipschitz tangents, verifying a conjecture of Semmes. As a stronger conclusion, one would like to know whether such maps decompose into countably many bi-Lipschitz pieces. We show that this is true when the Carnot group is Euclidean. For general Carnot targets, we show that the existence of a bi-Lipschitz decomposition is e…
In this paper, we prove an exponential and Ganssian concentration inequality for 1-Lipschitz maps from mm-spaces to Hadamard manifolds. In particular, we give a complete answer to a question by M. Gromov.
Suppose A is an open subset of a Carnot group G, where G has a discrete analogue, and H is another Carnot group. We show that a Lipschitz function from A to H whose image has positive Hausdorff measure in the appropriate dimension is biLipschitz on a subset of A of positive Hausdorff measure. We then construct Lipschitz maps from open sets in Carnot groups to Euclidean space that do not decrease dimension. Finally, we discuss two counterexamples to explain why Carnot group structure is necessary for these results.
We show that there are 105 isometric classes of fractal cubes of order 3 with 7 copies possessing one-point intersection property which are subdivided to 5 bi-Lipschitz classes of dendrites and 7 bi-Lipschitz classes of non-dendrites
In this paper, we study the Lévy-Milman concentration phenomenon of 1-Lipschitz maps from mm-spaces to $\mathbb{R}$-trees. Our main theorems assert that the concentration to $\mathbb{R}$-trees is equivalent to the concentration to the real line.
We establish the sharp rate of continuity of extensions of $\mathbb{R}^m$-valued $1$-Lipschitz maps from a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ to a $1$-Lipschitz maps on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We consider several cases when there exists a $1$-Lipschitz extension with preserved uniform distance to a given $1$-Lipschitz map. We prove that if $m>1$ then a given map is $1$-Lipschitz and affine if and only if such distance preserving extension exists for any $1$-Lipschitz map defined on any subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$. This shows a striking difference from the case $m=1$, where any $1$-Lipschitz function has such p…
In this paper, the Lipschitz clustering property of a metric space refers to the existence of Lipschitz retractions between its finite subset spaces. Obstructions to this property can be either topological or geometric features of the space. We prove that uniformly disconnected spaces have the Lipschitz clustering property, while for some connected spaces, the lack of sufficiently short connecting curves turns out to be an obstruction. This property is shown to be invariant under quasihomogeneous maps, but not under quasisymmetric ones.
In this paper, we study the Lévy-Milman concentration phenomenon of 1-Lipschitz maps into infinite dimensional metric spaces. Our main theorem asserts that the concentration to an infinite dimensional $\ell^p$-ball with the $\ell^q$-distance function for $1\leq p<q\leq +\infty$ is equivalent to the concentration to the real line.
A metric space has the universal Lipschitz extension property if for each subspace S embedded quasi-isometrically into an arbitrary metric space M there exists a continuous linear extension of Banach-valued Lipschitz functions on S to those on all of M. We show that the finite direct sum of Gromov hyperbolic spaces of bounded geometry is universal in the sense of this definition.
A $1$-Lipschitz map $f$ from a convex compact set to itself has fixed points. This consequence of Brouwer's or Schauder's fixed point theorem has more elementary proofs by approximating $f$ by $λ$-contractions, $f_λ$. We study the convergence of the fixed points of those contractions as they converge to $f$.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Lipschitz map, or more generally a uniformly Lipschitz family of maps, to factor the Hamming cubes. This is an extension to Lipschitz maps of a particular spatial result of Bourgain, Milman, and Wolfson.
We consider the category of all locally Lipschitz contractible metric spaces and all locally Lipschitz maps, which is a wide class of metric spaces, including all finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces and all CAT spaces. We also consider the chain complex of normal currents with compact support in a metric space in the sense of Ambrosio and Kirchheim. In the present paper, its homology is proved to be a homotopy invariant on the category. To prove this result, we define a new topology on a space of Lipschitz maps between arbitrary metric spaces. This topology is proved to coincide with the usua…
We focus our attention on the notion of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs, inside a subclass of Carnot groups of step 2 which includes a corank 1 Carnot groups (and so the Heisenberg groups), Free groups of step 2 and the complexified Heisenberg group. More precisely, we prove the equivalence between intrinsic Lipschitz map and a weak solution to a suitable non linear first order PDE system, which generalizes Lagrangian solution in the context of Heisenberg groups.
We prove a quantitative bi-Lipschitz nonembedding theorem for the Heisenberg group with its Carnot-Carathéodory metric and apply it to give a lower bound on the integrality gap of the Goemans-Linial semidefinite relaxation of the Sparsest Cut problem.
We prove the differentiability of Lipschitz maps X-->V, where X is a complete metric measure space satisfying a doubling condition and a Poincaré inequality, and V is a Banach space with the Radon Nikodym Property (RNP). The proof depends on a new characterization of the differentiable structure on such metric measure spaces, in terms of directional derivatives in the direction of tangent vectors to suitable rectifiable curves.
Let $f$ be a Lipschitz map from a subset $A$ of a stratified group to a Banach homogeneous group. We show that directional derivatives of $f$ act as homogeneous homomorphisms at density points of $A$ outside a $σ$-porous set. At density points of $A$ we establish a pointwise characterization of differentiability in terms of directional derivatives. We use these new results to obtain an alternate proof of almost everywhere differentiability of Lipschitz maps from subsets of stratified groups to Banach homogeneous groups satisfying a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. As a consequence we …
We prove that the Lipschitz free space over a certain type of discrete metric space has the Radon-Nikodým property. We also show that the Lipschitz free space over a complete, locally compact metric space has the Schur or approximation property whenever the Lipschitz free space over each compact subset also has this property.
We prove local Lipschitz property of the map which puts in correspondence to each $N$--net different from $(N-1)$--net its Chebyshev center. If dimension of Eucledean or Lobachevskii space is greater than 1 and net consists of more than 2 points we show that this map is not Lipschits in a neighbourhood of the space of 2--nets embedded into the space of all $N$--nets endowed by Hausdorff metric.
We find maximal representatives within equivalence classes of metric spheres. For Ahlfors regular spheres these are uniquely characterized by satisfying the seemingly unrelated notions of Sobolev-to-Lipschitz property, or volume rigidity. We also apply our construction to solutions of the Plateau problem in metric spaces and obtain a variant of the associated intrinsic disc studied by Lytchak--Wenger, which satisfies a related maximality condition.
Let $f : G \to H$ be a Lipschitz map between two Carnot groups. We show that if $B$ is ball of $G$, then there exists a subset $Z \subset B$, whose image in $H$ under $f$ has small Hausdorff content, such that $B \backslash Z$ can be decomposed into a controlled number of pieces, the restriction of $f$ on each of which is quantitatively biLipschitz. This extends a result of \cite{meyerson}, which proved the same result, but with the restriction that $G$ has an appropriate discretization. We provide an example of a Carnot group not admitting such a discretization.
We construct a catalog, of snowflake type metric circles, that describes all metric quasicircles up to \bl\ equivalence. This is a metric space analog of a result due to Rohde. Our construction also works for all bounded turning metric circles; these need not be doubling. As a byproduct, we show that a metric quasicircle with Assouad dimension strictly less than two is bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a planar quasicircle.
Le Donne and the author introduced the so-called intrinsically Lipschitz sections of a fixed quotient map $π$ in the context of metric spaces. Moreover, the author introduced the concept of intrinsic Cheeger energy when the quotient map is also linear. In this note we investigate about the non linearity of $π$. In particular, we find a Leibniz formula for the intrinsic slope when $π$ satisfies a weaker condition. After that, we focus our attention on Carnot groups and using the properties of intrinsic dilations we show that the dilation of a Lipschitz section is so too. Finally, in Carnot grou…
In 1997, J. Jost [27] and F. H. Lin [39], independently proved that every energy minimizing harmonic map from an Alexandrov space with curvature bounded from below to an Alexandrov space with non-positive curvature is locally Hölder continuous. In [39], F. H. Lin proposed a challenge problem: Can the Hölder continuity be improved to Lipschitz continuity? J. Jost also asked a similar problem about Lipschitz regularity of harmonic maps between singular spaces (see Page 38 in [28]). The main theorem of this paper gives a complete resolution to it.
We prove the Sobolev-to-Lipschitz property for metric measure spaces satisfying the quasi curvature dimension condition recently introduced in E. Milman, The Quasi Curvature-Dimension Condition with applications to sub-Riemannian manifolds, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (to appear, arXiv:1908.01513v5). We provide several applications to properties of the corresponding heat semigroup. In particular, under the additional assumption of infinitesimal Hilbertianity, we show the Varadhan short-time asymptotics for the heat semigroup with respect to the distance, and prove the irreducibility of the heat sem…
A relative Schottky set in a planar domain D is a subset of D obtained by removing from D open geometric discs whose closures are in D and are pairwise disjoint. In this paper we study quasisymmetric and related maps between relative Schottky sets of measure zero. We prove, in particular, that quasisymmetric maps between such sets in Jordan domains are conformal, locally bi-Lipschitz, and that their first derivatives are locally Lipschitz. We also provide a locally bi-Lipschitz uniformization result for relative Schottky sets in Jordan domains and establish rigidity with respect to local quasi…
We consider Lipschitz maps with values in quasi-metric spaces and extend such maps to finitely many points. We prove that in this context every 1-Lipschitz map admits an extension such that its Lipschitz constant is bounded from above by the number of added points plus one. Moreover, we prove that if the source space is a Hilbert space and the target space is a Banach space, then there exists an extension such that its Lipschitz constant is bounded from above by the square root of the total of added points plus one. We discuss applications to metric transforms.
In the metric spaces, we give some equivalent condition of intrinsically Lipschitz maps introduce by Franchi, Serapioni and Serra Cassano in subRiemannian Carnot groups. Unlike what happens in the Carnot groups, in our context intrinsic dilation do not exist but we can prove the same results using the Lipschitz property of the projection maps.
The main result: for every sequence $\{ω_m\}_{m=1}^\infty$ of positive numbers ($ω_m>0)$ there exists an isometric embedding $F:[0,1]\to L_1[0,1]$ which is nowhere differentiable, but for each $t\in [0,1]$ the image $F_t$ is infinitely differentiable on $[0,1]$ with bounds $\max_{x\in[0,1]}|F_t^{(m)}(x)|\leω_m$ and has an analytic extension to the complex plane which is an entire function.
Every integral current in a locally compact metric space $X$ can be approximated by a Lipschitz chain with respect to the normal mass, provided that Lipschitz maps into $X$ can be extended slightly.
Let $X$ and $Y$ be length metric spaces. Let $\mathcal H^n$ denote the $n$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. The Lipschitz-Volume Rigidity is a property that if there exists a 1-Lipschitz map $f\colon X\to Y$ and $0<\mathcal H^n(X)=\mathcal H^n(f(X))<\infty$, then $f$ preserves the length of path. This property holds for smooth manifolds but doesn't hold for all singular spaces. We survey the Lipschitz-Volume Rigidity Theorems on singular spaces with lower curvature bounds and discuss some related open problems.
We define the isoperimetric constant for any locally finite metric space and we study the property of having isoperimetric constant equal to zero. This property, called Small Neighborhood property, clearly extends amenability to any locally finite space. Therefore, we start making a comparison between this property and other notions of amenability for locally finite metric spaces that have been proposed by Gromov, Lafontaine and Pansu, by Ceccherini-Silberstein, Grigorchuk and de la Harpe and by Block and Weinberger. We discuss possible applications of the property SN in the study of embedding…
Large-scale sublinearly Lipschitz maps have been introduced by Yves Cornulier in order to precisely state his theorems about asymptotic cones of Lie groups. In particular, Sublinearly biLipschitz Equivalences (SBE) are a weak variant of quasiisometries, with the only requirement of still inducing biLipschitz maps at the level of asymptotic cones. We focus here on hyperbolic metric spaces and study properties of their boundary extensions, reminiscent of quasiM{ö}bius mappings. We give a dimensional invariant on the boundary that allows to distinguish hyperbolic symmetric spaces up to SBE, answe…
We use porosity to study differentiability of Lipschitz maps on Carnot groups. Our first result states that directional derivatives of a Lipschitz function act linearly outside a $σ$-porous set. The second result states that irregular points of a Lipschitz function form a $σ$-porous set. We use these observations to give a new proof of Pansu's theorem for Lipschitz maps from a general Carnot group to a Euclidean space.
In 1994, Jan Pelant proved that a metric property related to the notion of paracompactness called the uniform Stone property characterizes a metric space's uniform embeddability into $c_0(κ)$ for some cardinality $κ$. In this paper it is shown that coarse Lipschitz embeddability of a metric space into $c_0(κ)$ can be characterized in a similar manner. It is also shown that coarse, uniform, and bi-Lipschitz embeddability into $c_0(κ)$ are equivalent notions for normed linear spaces.
Rademacher theorem states that every Lipschitz function on the Euclidean space is differentiable almost everywhere, where "almost everywhere" refers to the Lebesgue measure. In this paper we prove a differentiability result of similar type, where the Lebesgue measure is replaced by an arbitrary measure $μ$. In particular we show that the differentiability properties of Lipschitz functions at $μ$-almost every point are related to the decompositions of $μ$ in terms of rectifiable one-dimensional measures. As a consequence we obtain a differentiability result for Lipschitz functions with respect …
We prove a Rademacher-type theorem for Lipschitz mappings from a subset of a Carnot group to a Banach homogeneous group, equipped with a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. We provide a metric area formula that applies to these mappings and more generally to all almost everywhere metrically differentiable Lipschitz mappings defined on a Carnot group.
This is one of a series of papers examining the interplay between differentiation theory for Lipschitz maps, X-->V, and bi-Lipschitz nonembeddability, where X is a metric measure space and V is a Banach space. Here, we consider the case V=L^1 where differentiability fails. We establish another kind of differentiability for certain X, including R^n and H, the Heisenberg group with its Carnot-Cartheodory metric. It follows that H does not bi-Lipschitz embed into L^1, as conjectured by J. Lee and A. Naor. When combined with their work, this provides a natural counter example to the Goemans-Linial…
