Recently, Horava proposed a power counting renormalizable theory for (3+1)-dimensional quantum gravity, which reduces to Einstein gravity with a non-vanishing cosmological constant in IR, but possesses improved UV behaviors. In this work, we analyze the stability of the Einstein static universe by considering linear homogeneous perturbations in the context of an IR modification of Horava gravity, which implies a `soft' breaking of the `detailed balance' condition. The stability regions of the Einstein static universe are parameterized by the linear equation of state parameter w=p/ρand the parameters appearing in the Horava theory, and it is shown that a large class of stable solutions exists in the respective parameter space.
We briefly describe the modified Friedmann equations for Einstein-Aether gravity theory and we find the effective density and pressure. The purpose of our present work is to reconstruction of Einstein-Aether Gravity from other modified gravities like $f(T)$, $f(R)$, $f(G)$, $f(R,T)$ and $f(R,G)$ and check its viability. The scale factor is chosen in power law form. The free function $F(K)$ for Einstein-Aether gravity (where $K$ is proportional to $H^{2}$) have been found in terms for $K$ by the correspondence between Einstein-Aether gravity and other modified gravities and the nature of $F(K)$…
We present a brief overview of the stability analysis of the Einstein static universe in various modified theories of gravity, like f(R) gravity, Gauss-Bonnet or f(G) gravity, and Horava-Lifshitz gravity.
Standard general relativity fails to take into account the changes in coordinates induced by the variation of metric in the Hilbert action principle. We propose to include such changes by introducing a fundamental compensating tensor field and modifying the usual variational procedure.
We show that the Kidder-Scheel-Teukolsky family of hyperbolic formulations of the 3+1 evolution equations of general relativity remains hyperbolic when coupled to a recently proposed modified version of the Bona-Masso slicing condition.
The purpose of the classical Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz pseudotensors is for determining the gravitational energy. Neither of them can guarantee a positive energy in holonomic frames. In the small sphere approximation, it has been required that the quasilocal expression for the gravitational energy-momentum density should be proportional to the Bel-Robinson tensor $B_{αβμν}$. However, we propose a new tensor $V_{αβμν}$ which is the sum of certain tensors $S_{αβμν}$ and $K_{αβμν}$, it has certain properties so that it gives the same gravitational "energy-momentum" content as $B_{αβμν}$ does. …
In this paper we continue earlier investigations of evolutionary formulations of the Einstein vacuum constraint equations originally introduced by Rácz. Motivated by the strong evidence from these works that the resulting vacuum initial data sets are generically not asymptotically flat we analyse the asymptotics of the solutions of a modified formulation by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We conclude that the vacuum initial data sets generated with this new formulation are generically asymptotically flat.
In this work, we focus on the collapse of a spherically symmetric perturbation, with a classical top-hat profile, to study the nonlinear evolution of only viscous modified Chaplygin gas (VMCG) perturbations in Einstein's gravity as well as in loop quantum Cosmology (LQC). In the perturbed region, we have investigated the natures of equation of state parameter, square speed of sound and another perturbed quantities. The results have been analyzed by numerical and graphical investigations.
In this paper, we present a theoretical and numerical analysis of the free expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate, where we assume that the single particle energy spectrum is deformed due to a possible quantum structure of spacetime. Also, we consider the presence of interparticle interactions in order to study more realistic and specific scenarios. The modified free velocity expansion of the condensate leads in a natural way to a modification of the uncertainty principle, which allows us to investigate some possible features of the Planck scale regime in low-energy earth-based experiments.
The lensing and Einstein ring at the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 3827 are reproduced in the modified gravity theory MOG. The estimated effective lensing mass $M_L=(1+α)M_b=5.2\times 10^{12} M_\odot$ within $R=18.3$~kpc for a baryon mass $M_b=1.0\times 10^{12} M_\odot$ within the same radius produces the observed Einstein ring angular radius $θ_E=10''$. A detailed derivation of the total lensing mass is based on modeling of the cluster configuration of galaxies, intracluster light and X-ray emission. The MOG can fit the lensing and Einstein ring in Abell 3827 without dark matter as well as…
We propose further conformal parametrizations for initial data in some modified Einstein gravity theories. Some of them give rise to conformally covariant systems.
We study capability of $f(R)$ gravity models to allow crossing the phantom boundary in both Jordan and Einstein conformal frames. In Einstein frame, these models are equivalent to Einstein gravity together with a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity. This scalar degree of freedom appears as a quintessence field with a coupling with the matter sector. We investigate evolution of the equation of sate parameter for some cosmologically viable $f(R)$ gravity models in both conformal frames. This investigation (beyond mere theoretical arguments) acts as an operational tool to distinguish physic…
In this paper, we derive the Einstein's field equation (EFE) by considering an non-commuting two dimensional quantized space, which can be excited by absorbing energy. Any variation of the energy level of space quantas, will result in a change in the quanta's area state. This means, that the geometry of space depends on the energy which exists in it. Using Holographic principle and Unruh effect, without any further assumptions like equipartition theorem, our model leads to Newton's law of gravity in the limit $\hbar \to 0$.
It is well known that only the axial piece of the torsion couples minimally to fermions in a Riemann-Cartan geometry, while the other ones decouple. In this paper, we consider the Dirac field minimally coupled to a dynamical background with torsion and compute its contribution to the fermionic one-loop effective action. Such a contribution owns topological nature since it can be linked with topological invariants from Riemann-Cartan spaces, like Nieh-Yan and Chern-Simons terms. Furthermore, we propose a novel modified theory of gravity constructed by adding the aforementioned one-loop contribu…
A reformulation of the Schwarzschild solution of the linearised Einstein field equations in post-Riemannian Finsler spacetime is derived. The solution is constructed in three stages: the exterior solution, the event-horizon solution and the interior solution. It is shown that the exterior solution is asymptotically similar to Newtonian gravity at large distances implying that Newtonian gravity is a low energy approximation of the solution. Application of Eddington-Finklestein coordinates is shown to reproduce the results obtained from standard general relativity at the event horizon. Further a…
We describe a general framework for analyzing orbits of systems containing compact objects (neutron stars or black holes) in a class of Lagrangian-based alternative theories of gravity that also admit a global preferred reference frame. The framework is based on a modified Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann (EIH) formalism developed by Eardley and by Will, generalized to include the possibility of Lorentz-violating, preferred-frame effects. It uses a post-Newtonian $N$-body Lagrangian with arbitrary parameters that depend on the theory of gravity and on "sensitivities" that encode the effects of the bod…
The actions for bosonic fields typically contain terms quadratic in the derivatives of the fields. This is not the case in the Palatini approach to general relativity. The action does not contain any derivatives of the metric and it only contains terms linear in the derivatives of the connection. In general relativity the covariant derivative of the metric vanishes, so it is not possible to include such terms in the action. However, in more general theories this is not the case. In this paper I consider an action which is quadratic in the derivatives of the metric and connection and show that …
A modified Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimensions where the quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term is coupled to a scalar field is considered. The field equations of the model are obtained by variational methods by making use of the constrained-first order formalism covering both pseudo-Riemannian and non-Riemannian cases. In the pseudo-Riemannian case, the Lagrange multiplier forms, which impose the vanishing torsion constraint, are eliminated in favor of the remaining fields and the resulting metric field equations are expressed in terms of the double-dual curvature 2-form. In the non-Riemann…
We modify the method to generate the exact solutions of the Einstein equations basing on the laws of thermodynamics. Firstly, the Komar mass is used to take the place of the Misner-Sharp energy which is used in the original methods, and then several exact solutions of Einstein equations are obtained, including the black hole solution which surrounded by quintessence. Moreover, the geometry surface gravity defined by Komar mass is obtained. Secondly, we use both the Komar mass and the ADM mass to modify such method, and the similar results are obtained. Moreover, with some generalize added to t…
A model of Einstein-Hilbert action subject to the scale transformation is studied. By introducing a dilaton field as a means of scale transformation a new action is obtained whose Einstein field equations are consistent with traceless matter with non-vanishing modified terms together with dynamical cosmological and gravitational coupling terms. The obtained modified Einstein equations are neither those in $f(R)$ metric formalism nor the ones in $f({\cal R})$ Palatini formalism, whereas the modified source terms are {\it formally} equivalent to those of $f({\cal R})=\frac{1}{2}{\cal R}^2$ gravi…
We analyze the stability of the Einstein static universe by considering homogeneous perturbations in the context of f(G) modified Gauss-Bonnet theories of gravity. By considering a generic form of f(G), the stability region of the Einstein static universe is parameterized by the linear equation of state parameter w=p/rho and the second derivative f"(G) of the Gauss-Bonnet term.
A modified gravitational action is considered which involves the quantity $F_{μν}=\partial_μΓ_ν-\partial_νΓ_μ$, where $Γ_μ=Γ^α_{μα}$. Since $Γ_μ$ transforms like a U(1) gauge field under coordinate transformations terms such as $F^{μν}F_{μν}$ are invariant under coordinate transformations. If such a term is added to the usual gravitational action the resulting field equations, obtained from a Palatini variation, are the Einstein-Proca equations. The vector field can be coupled to point charges or to a complex scalar density of weight $ie$, where $e$ is the charge of the field. If this scalar d…
The estimation of parameters of generalized cosmic Chaplygin gas and viscous modified Chaplygin gas and Accretions around Black Hole in the background of Einstein-Aether gravity
In this paper, by studying the Einstein-Bohr's photon box for weighting a photon, we find that the effective Newton constant can be proposed by the extended uncertainty principle and extended generalized uncertainty principle. We obtain the modified Hawking temperature, mass, specific heat, and entropy by using the modified Schwarzschild metric.
We have assumed FRW model of the universe in Einstein-Aether gravity filled with dark matter and Modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) type dark energy. We present the Hubble parameter in terms of some unknown parameters and observational parameters with the redshift z. From observed Hubble data (OHD) set (12 points), we have obtained the bounds of the arbitrary parameters (A,B) of MCG by minimizing the χ^{2} test. Next due to joint analysis of BAO and CMB observations, we have also obtained the best fit values and the bounds of the parameters (A,B) by fixing some other parameters. We have also taken t…
We consider the well-posedness of the initial value problem for Einstein-Maxwell theory modified by higher derivative effective field theory corrections. Field redefinitions can be used to bring the leading parity-symmetric 4-derivative corrections to a form which gives second order equations of motion. We show that a recently introduced "modified harmonic" gauge condition can be used to obtain a formulation of these theories which admits a well-posed initial value problem when the higher derivative corrections to the equations of motion are small.
We explore the cosmological consequences of Modified Gravity (MOG), and find that it provides, using a minimal number of parameters, good fits to data, including CMB temperature anisotropy, galaxy power spectrum, and supernova luminosity-distance observations without exotic dark matter. MOG predicts a bouncing cosmology with a vacuum energy term that yields accelerating expansion and an age of ~13 billion years.
We analyze the features of the Minkowskian limit of a particular non-analytical f(R) model, whose Taylor expansion in the weak field limit does not hold, as far as gravitational waves (GWs) are concerned. We solve the corresponding Einstein equations and we find an explicit expression of the modified GWs as the sum of two terms, i.e. the standard one and a modified part. As a result, GWs in this model are not transverse, and their polarization is different from that of General Relativity. The velocity of the GW modified part depends crucially on the parameters characterizing the model, and it …
This thesis investigates a toy model for inflation in a class of modified theories of gravity in the metric formalism. Instead of the standard procedure -- assuming a non-linear Lagrangian $f(R)$ in the Jordan frame -- we start from a simple ϕ^2 potential in the Einstein frame and investigate the corresponding $f(R)$ in the former picture. Such approach yields plenty of new pieces of information, namely a self-terminating inflationary solution with a linear Lagrangian, a robust criterion for stability of such theories, a dynamical effective potential for the Ricci scalar $R$, the addition of a…
We propose a modification of Einstein-Cartan gravity equations. The modified cosmology departs from the standard model of cosmology for small Hubble parameter. A characteristic Hubble scale h0, which is intrinsically related to cosmological constant, marks the boundary between the validity domains of the standard model of cosmology and modified cosmology. For large Hubble parameter, the standard model of cosmology is restored. In the opposite limit of small Hubble parameter, which is the case for present epoch, Lorentz-violating effects would manifest themselves. One of the implications is tha…
The Einstein-Schrodinger theory is modified to include a large cosmological constant caused by zero-point fluctuations. This ``extrinsic'' cosmological constant which multiplies the symmetric metric is assumed to be nearly cancelled by Schrodinger's ``bare'' cosmological constant which multiplies the nonsymmetric fundamental tensor, such that the total cosmological constant is consistent with measurement. This modified Einstein-Schrodinger theory is expressed in Newman-Penrose form, and tetrad methods are used to confirm that it closely approximates ordinary general relativity and electromagne…
In the usual derivation of Einstein's equation from action, the surface terms are neglected. Hawking \cite{hw} gave a derivation of the gravitational Hamiltonian keeping all surface terms. Using such surface terms Easson et.al.\cite{ea} showed that Friedmann equation could get modified and using the modified Friedmann equation they could explain the cosmic acceleration. We study the effect of surface terms on a galactic scale and find that the classical limit of the modified Friedmann equation will lead to a MOND like acceleration term.
Model-independent parametrisations of modified gravity have attracted a lot of attention over the past few years; numerous combinations of experiments and observables have been suggested to constrain these parameterisations, and future surveys look very promising. Galaxy Clusters have been mentioned, but not looked at as extensively in the literature as some other probes. Here we look at adding Galaxy Clusters into the mix of observables and examine whether they could improve the constraints on the modified gravity parameters. In particular, we forecast the constraints from combining the Planc…
The recent birth of gravitational wave astronomy invites a new generation of precision tests of general relativity. Signatures of black hole (BH) mergers must be systematically explored in a wide spectrum of modified gravity theories. Here, we turn to one such theory in which the initial value problem for BH mergers is well posed, the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system. We present conservative estimates for the merger parameters (final spins, quasinormal modes) based on techniques that have worked well for ordinary gravity mergers and utilize information extracted from test particle motion in the…
We extend a recently developed numerical code to obtain stationary, axisymmetric solutions that describe rotating black hole spacetimes in a wide class of modified theories of gravity. The code utilizes a relaxed Newton-Raphson method to solve the full nonlinear modified Einstein's Equations on a two-dimensional grid with a Newton polynomial finite difference scheme. We validate this code by considering static and axisymmetric black holes in General Relativity. We obtain rotating black hole solutions in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a linear (linear scalar-Gauss-Bonnet) and an exponential (…
We establish the importance of modified Einstein's gravity (MG) in white dwarfs (WDs) for the first time in the literature. We show that MG leads to significantly sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting mass WDs, depending on a single model parameter. However, conventional WDs on approaching Chandrasekhar's limit are expected to trigger type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), a key to unravel the evolutionary history of the universe. Nevertheless, observations of several peculiar, under- and over-luminous SNeIa argue for the limiting mass widely different from Chandrasekhar's limit. Explosions of MG induced…
We investigate the modification to Einstein's vacuum field equations which is imposed by string theory when the dilaton field is ignored. Including the cosmological constant in all calculations, we prove that such a theory of gravity admits no static isotropic solution. We then show that any isotropic solution of the equations in question must necessarily be static, therefore proving that no isotropic solution exists for this stringy modification to gravity.
A continual model of non-singular screw dislocation lying along a straight infinitely long circular cylinder is investigated in the framework of translational gauge approach with the Hilbert--Einstein gauge Lagrangian. The stress--strain constitutive law implies the elastic energy of isotropic continuum which includes the terms of second and third orders in the strain components. The Einstein-type gauge equation with the elastic stress tensor as a driving source is investigated perturbatively, and second order contribution to the stress potential of the modified screw dislocation is obtained. …
We investigate Einstein theories of gravity, coupled to a scalar field \vphi and point-like matter, which are characterized by a scalar field-dependent matter coupling function e^{H(\vphi)}. We show that under mild constraints on the form of the potential for the scalar field, there are a broad class of Einstein-like gravity models -characterized by the asymptotic behavior of H- which allow for a non-Newtonian weak-field limit with the gravitational potential behaving for large distances as ln r. The Newtonian term GM/r appears only as sub-leading. We point out that this behavior is also share…
We consider Brans-Dicke theory with a self-interacting potential in Einstein conformal frame. We introduce a class of solutions in which an accelerating expansion is possible in a spatially flat universe for positive and large values of the Brans-Dicke parameter consistent with local gravity experiments. In this Einstein frame formulation, the theory appears as an interacting quintessence model in which the interaction term is given by the conformal transformation. In such an interacting model, we shall show that the solutions lead simultaneously to a constant ratio of energy densities of matt…
We summarize some our recent results on encoding exact solutions of field equations in Einstein and modified gravity theories into solitonic hierarchies derived for nonholonomic curve flows with associated bi-Hamilton structure. We argue that there is a canonical distinguished connection for which the fundamental geometric/ physical equations decouple in general form. This allows us to construct very general classes of generic off-diagonal solutions determined by corresponding types of generating and integration functions depending on all (spacetime) coordinates. If the integral varieties are …
If one assumes a particular form of non-minimal coupling, called the conformal coupling, of a perfect fluid with gravity in the fluid-gravity Lagrangian then one gets modified Einstein field equation. In the modified Einstein equation, the effect of the non-minimal coupling does not vanish if one works with spacetimes for which the Ricci scalar vanishes. In the present work we use the Schwarzschild metric in the modified Einstein equation, in presence of non-minimal coupling with a fluid, and find out the energy-density and pressure of the fluid. In the present case the perfect fluid is part o…
We discuss the generalization of the NUT spacetime in General Relativity (GR) within the framework of the (dynamical) Einstein--Chern-Simons (ECS) theory with a massless scalar field. These configurations approach asymptotically the NUT spacetime and are characterized by the `electric' and `magnetic' mass parameters and a scalar `charge'. The solutions are found both analytically and numerically. The analytical approach is perturbative around the Einstein gravity background. Our results indicate that the ECS configurations share all basic properties of the NUT spacetime in GR. However, when co…
Certain off-diagonal vacuum and nonvacuum configurations in Einstein gravity can mimic physical effects of modified gravitational theories of $ f(R,T,R_{μν}T^{μν})$ type. We prove this statement by constructing exact and approximate solutions which encode certain models of covariant Ho\v rava type gravity with dynamical Lorentz symmetry breaking. Off-diagonal generalizations of de Sitter and nonolonomic $Λ$CDM universes are constructed which are generated through nonlinear gravitational polarization of fundamental physical constants and which model interactions with non-constant exotic fluids …
It is shown that if a metric in quantum gravity can be decomposed as a sum of classical and quantum parts then Einstein quantum gravity looks approximately like modified gravity with a nonminimal interaction between gravity and matter.
In this work we investigate the background dynamics when dark energy is coupled to dark matter with a suitable interaction in the universe described by Einstein-Aether gravity. Dark energy in the form of Modified Chaplygin gas is considered. A suitable interaction between dark energy and dark matter is considered in order to at least alleviate (if not solve) the cosmic coincidence problem. The dynamical system of equations is solved numerically and a stable scaling solution is obtained. A significant attempt towards the solution of the cosmic coincidence problem is taken. The statefinder param…
We explore the effect of modification to Einstein's gravity in white dwarfs for the first time in the literature, to the best of our knowledge. This leads to significantly sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting masses of white dwarfs, determined by a single model parameter. On the other hand, type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), a key to unravel the evolutionary history of the universe, are believed to be triggered in white dwarfs having mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit. However, observations of several peculiar, under- and over-luminous SNeIa argue for exploding masses widely different from this l…
Considering the general quantum corrections to the area law of black hole entropy and adopting the viewpoint that gravity interprets as an entropic force, we derive the modified forms of MOND theory of gravitation and Einstein field equations. As two special cases we study the logarithmic and power-law corrections to entropy and find the explicit form of the obtained modified equations.
This paper analyzes the stability of the closed Einstein static universe by using linear homogeneous perturbations in the framework of energy-momentum squared gravity. This newly developed proposal resolves the primordial singularity and yields feasible cosmological results in the early times. For this purpose, we consider the closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with isotropic matter configuration and adopt small perturbations on the matter parameters and scale factor. Further, we establish equations of motion for static as well as perturbed systems and analyze the stable regions for pa…
A number of recent observations have suggested that the Einstein's theory of general relativity may not be the ultimate theory of gravity. The f(R) gravity model with R being the scalar curvature turns out to be one of the best bet to surpass the general relativity which explains a number of phenomena where Einstein's theory of gravity fails. In the f(R) gravity, behaviour of the spacetime is modified as compared to that of given by the Einstein's theory of general relativity. This theory has already been explored for understanding various compact objects such as neutron stars, white dwarfs et…
[Remark: Much more natural and important models are studied in arXiv:1405.2083. Furthermore, the physical picture given there is much more complete.] The quantum N-portrait -- black holes pictured as Bose-Einstein condensates -- is studied for a special class of models in arbitrary dimensions. In the presence of extra dimensions, the depletion rate is shown to be significantly enhanced in these models as compared to standard semi-classical results. Consequences for large as well as micro condensates are discussed. Speculations are made on a possible connection of higher-dimensional graviton co…
