Let $Ω$ be an open, simply connected, and bounded region in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d\geq2$, and assume its boundary $\partialΩ$ is smooth. Consider solving the eigenvalue problem $Lu=λu$ for an elliptic partial differential operator $L$ over $Ω$ with zero values for either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We propose, analyze, and illustrate a 'spectral method' for solving numerically such an eigenvalue problem. This is an extension of the methods presented earlier in [5],[6].
We present a perturbed subspace iteration algorithm to approximate the lowermost eigenvalue cluster of an elliptic eigenvalue problem. As a prototype, we consider the Laplace eigenvalue problem posed in a polygonal domain. The algorithm is motivated by the analysis of inexact (perturbed) inverse iteration algorithms in numerical linear algebra. We couple the perturbed inverse iteration approach with mesh refinement strategy based on residual estimators. We demonstrate our approach on model problems in two and three dimensions.

In this paper we present benchmark problems for non-selfadjoint elliptic eigenvalue problems with large defect and ascent. We describe the derivation of the benchmark problem with a discontinuous coefficient and mixed boundary conditions. Numerical experiments are performed to investigate the convergence of a Galerkin finite element method with respect to the discretization parameters, the regularity of the problem, and the ascent of the eigenvalue. This allows us to verify the sharpness of the theoretical estimates from the literature with respect to these parameters. We provide numerical evi…
We propose an a posteriori error estimator for high-order $p$- or $hp$-finite element discretizations of selfadjoint linear elliptic eigenvalue problems that is appropriate for estimating the error in the approximation of an eigenvalue cluster and the corresponding invariant subspace. The estimator is based on the computation of approximate error functions in a space that complements the one in which the approximate eigenvectors were computed. These error functions are used to construct estimates of collective measures of error, such as the Hausdorff distance between the true and approximate c…
In this paper, we consider the Newton-Schur method in Hilbert space and obtain quadratic convergence. For the symmetric elliptic eigenvalue problem discretized by the standard finite element method and non-overlapping domain decomposition method, we use the Steklov-Poincaré operator to reduce the eigenvalue problem on the domain $Ω$ into the nonlinear eigenvalue subproblem on $Γ$, which is the union of subdomain boundaries. We prove that the convergence rate for the Newton-Schur method is $ε_{N}\leq CH^{2}(1+\ln(H/h))^{2}ε^{2}$, where the constant $C$ is independent of the fine mesh size $h$ a…
In this paper we give an estimate on the asymptotic behavior of eigenvalues of discretized elliptic boundary values problems. We first prove a simple min-max principle for selfadjoint operators on a Hilbert space. Then we show two sided bounds on the $k$-th eigenvalue of the discrete Laplacian by the $k$-th eigenvalue of the continuous Laplacian operator under the assumption that the finite element mesh is quasi-uniform. Combining this result with the well-known Weyl's law, we show that the $k$-th eigenvalue of the discretized isotropic elliptic operators, spectrally equivalent to the discreti…

Stochastic PDE eigenvalue problems often arise in the field of uncertainty quantification, whereby one seeks to quantify the uncertainty in an eigenvalue, or its eigenfunction. In this paper we present an efficient multilevel quasi-Monte Carlo (MLQMC) algorithm for computing the expectation of the smallest eigenvalue of an elliptic eigenvalue problem with stochastic coefficients. Each sample evaluation requires the solution of a PDE eigenvalue problem, and so tackling this problem in practice is notoriously computationally difficult. We speed up the approximation of this expectation in four wa…
Stochastic PDE eigenvalue problems are useful models for quantifying the uncertainty in several applications from the physical sciences and engineering, e.g., structural vibration analysis, the criticality of a nuclear reactor or photonic crystal structures. In this paper we present a multilevel quasi-Monte Carlo (MLQMC) method for approximating the expectation of the minimal eigenvalue of an elliptic eigenvalue problem with coefficients that are given as a series expansion of countably-many stochastic parameters. The MLQMC algorithm is based on a hierarchy of discretisations of the spatial do…
In this paper the discrete eigenvalues of elliptic second order differential operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $n \in \mathbb{N}$, with singular $δ$- and $δ'$-interactions are studied. We show the self-adjointness of these operators and derive equivalent formulations for the eigenvalue problems involving boundary integral operators. These formulations are suitable for the numerical computations of the discrete eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions by boundary element methods. We provide convergence results and show numerical examples.
In the present paper, we study the analyticity of the leftmost eigenvalue of the linear elliptic partial differential operator with random coefficient and analyze the convergence rate of the quasi-Monte Carlo method for approximation of the expectation of this quantity. The random coefficient is assumed to be represented by an affine expansion $a_0(\boldsymbol{x})+\sum_{j\in \mathbb{N}}y_ja_j(\boldsymbol{x})$, where elements of the parameter vector $\boldsymbol{y}=(y_j)_{j\in \mathbb{N}}\in U^\infty$ are independent and identically uniformly distributed on $U:=[-\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}]$. In this work, we investigate the spectral problem $Au = λu$ where $A$ is a fractional elliptic operator involving left- and right-sided Riemann-Liouville derivatives. These operators are nonlocal and nonsymmetric, however, share certain classic elliptic properties. The eigenvalues correspond to the roots of a class of certain special functions. Compared with classic Sturm-Liouville problems, the most challenging part is to set up the framework for analyzing these nonlocal operators, which requires developing new tools. We prove the existence of the real eigenvalues, find the range for all poss…

In this paper, we propose a semigroup method for solving high-dimensional elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) and the associated eigenvalue problems based on neural networks. For the PDE problems, we reformulate the original equations as variational problems with the help of semigroup operators and then solve the variational problems with neural network (NN) parameterization. The main advantages are that no mixed second-order derivative computation is needed during the stochastic gradient descent training and that the boundary conditions are taken into account automatically by the s…
