It has been suggested that the volume dependence of the spectral weight could be utilized to distinguish single and multi-particle states in Monte Carlo simulations. In a recent study using a solvable model, the Lee model, we found that this criteria is applicable only for stable particles and narrow resonances, not for the broad resonances. In this paper, the same question is addressed within the finite size formalism outlined by Lüscher. Using a quantum mechanical scattering model, the conclusion that was found in previous Lee model study is recovered. Then, following similar arguments as in Lüscher's, it is argued that the result is valid for a general massive quantum field theory under the same conditions as the Lüscher's formulae. Using the spectral weight function, a possibility of extracting resonance parameters is also pointed out.
The aim of the GRAL project is to simulate full QCD with standard Wilson fermions at light quark masses on small to medium-sized lattices and to obtain infinite-volume results by extrapolation. In order to establish the functional form of the volume dependence we study systematically the finite-size effects in the light hadron spectrum. We give an update on the status of the GRAL project and show that our simulation data for the light hadron masses depend exponentially on the lattice size.
Volume dependence of the spectral weight is usually used as a simple criteria to distinguish single-particle states from multi-particle states in lattice QCD calculations. Within a solvable model, the Lee model, we show that this criteria is in principle only valid for a stable particle or a narrow resonance. If the resonance being studied is broad, then the volume dependence of the corresponding spectral weight resembles that of a multi-particle state instead of a single-particle one. For an unstable $V$-particle in the Lee model, the transition from single-particle to multi-particle volume d…
The interplay between the finite volume and finite lattice spacing is investigated using lattice QCD simulations to compute the Landau gauge gluon propagator. Comparing several ensembles with different lattice spacings and physical volumes, we conclude that the dominant effects, in the infrared region, are associated with the use of a finite lattice spacing. The simulations show that decreasing the lattice spacing, while keeping the same physical volume, leads to an enhancement of the infrared gluon propagator. In this sense, the data from $β=5.7$ simulations, which uses an $a \approx 0.18$ fm…
The volume dependence of the octet baryon masses and relations among them are explored with Lattice QCD. Calculations are performed with n_f=2+1 clover fermion discretization in four lattice volumes, with spatial extent L ~ 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.9 fm, with an anisotropic lattice spacing of b_s ~ 0.123 fm in the spatial direction, and b_t = b_s/3.5 in the time direction, and at a pion mass of m_pi ~ 390 MeV. The typical precision of the ground-state baryon mass determination is ~0.2%, enabling a precise exploration of the volume dependence of the masses, the Gell-Mann--Okubo mass relation, and of…
We study the dependence on $T$ of the static potential $V(T;{\vec R})$ defined from Wilson loops and from Polyakov loop correlators on a finite lattice. For this study we employ a simple model with confinement, and compare with MC results.
A general formula is derived for the finite volume dependence of vacuum expectation values analogous to Luscher's formula for the masses. The result involves no integrals over kinematic quantities and depends only on the matrix element between pions at zero momentum transfer thus presenting a new way to calculate the latter, i.e. pion sigma terms. The full order $p^6$ correction to the vacuum condensate $<\bar q q>$ is evaluated and compared with the result from the Luscher formula. Due to the size of the $p^6$ result no conclusion about the accuracy of the Luscher formula can be drawn.
We report on a preliminary study of the volume dependence of the gluon propagator. The propagator is computed using different lattice volumes, its extrapolation to infinite volume is investigated with particular attention to the its IR behaviour. Our data shows a mild but measurable dependence with the volume. Unfortunately, we are not able yet to clarify its behaviour close to zero momentum.
We study the location of the partition function zeros in the complex beta plane (Fisher's Zeros) for SU(2) lattice gauge theory on L^4 lattices. We discuss recent attempts to locate complex zeros for L=4 and 6. We compare results obtained using various polynomial approximations of the logarithm of the density of states and a straightforward MC reweighting. We conclude that the method based on a combination of discrete Chebyshev orthogonality and patching plaquette distributions at different beta provides the more reliable estimates.
The number of configurations of the dynamical triangulation model of 4D euclidean quantum gravity appears to grow faster than exponentially with the volume, with the implication that the system would end up in the crumpled phase for any fixed $κ_2$ (inverse bare Newton constant). However, a scaling region is not excluded if we allow $κ_2$ to go to infinity together with the volume.
The physics of pions within a finite volume is explored using lattice regularized chiral perturbation theory. This regularization scheme permits a straightforward computational approach to be used in place of analytical continuum techniques. Using the pion mass, decay constant, form factor and charge radius as examples, it is shown how numerical results for volume dependences are obtained at the one-loop level from simple summations.
We study the color-dependent confining forces between two quarks by the quenched lattice simulations of Coulomb gauge QCD. The color-singlet and color-antitriplet instantaneous potentials yield attractive forces. The ratio of the string tensions obtained from them is approximately 2 and have little volume dependence. Meanwhile, the color-octet and color-sextet channels give a minor contribution for two-quark system. We finally find that the infrared self-energy of the color-nonsinglet channels diverges in the infinite volume limit; however, the degree of the divergence on the finite lattice ca…
It is shown that the strong volume-dependence of the axial charge of the nucleon seen in lattice QCD calculations can be understood quantitatively in terms of the pion-induced interactions between neighbouring nucleons. The associated wave function renormalization leads to an increased suppression of the axial charge as the strength of the interaction increases, either because of a decrease in lattice size or in pion mass.
We calculate the scalar semileptonic kaon decay in finite volume at the momentum transfer $t_{m} = (m_{K} - m_π)^2$, using chiral perturbation theory. At first we obtain the hadronic matrix element to be calculated in finite volume. We then evaluate the finite size effects for two volumes with $L = 1.83 fm$ and $L= 2.73 fm$ and find that the difference between the finite volume corrections of the two volumes are larger than the difference as quoted in \cite{Boyle2007a}. It appears then that the pion masses used for the scalar form factor in ChPT are large which result in large finite volume co…
Spectral weight functions are easily obtained from two-point correlation functions and they might be used to distinguish single-particle from multi-particle states in a finite-volume lattice calculation, a problem crucial for many lattice QCD simulations. In previous studies, it is shown that the spectral weight function for a broad resonance shares the typical volume dependence of a two-particle scattering state i.e. proportional to $1/L^3$ in a large cubic box of size $L$ while the narrow resonance case requires further investigation. In this paper, a generalized formula is found for the spe…
We study the two-point Topological Charge Density Correlator (TCDC) in lattice QCD with two degenerate flavours of naive Wilson fermions and unimproved Wilson gauge action at two values of lattice spacings and different volumes, for a range of quark masses. Configurations are generated with DDHMC algorithm and smoothed with HYP smearing. In order to shed light on the mechanisms leading to the observed suppression of topological susceptibility with respect to the decreasing quark mass and decreasing volume, in this work, we carry out a detailed study of the two-point TCDC. We have shown that, (…
Because the time needed for a simulation in lattice QCD varies at a rate exceeding the fourth power of the lattice size, it is important to understand how small one can make a lattice without altering the physics beyond recognition. It is common to use a rule of thumb that the pion mass times the lattice size should be greater than (ideally much greater than) four (i.e., $m_πL \gg 4$). By considering a relatively simple chiral quark model we are led to suggest that a more realistic constraint would be $m_π(L - 2R) \gg 4$, where $R$ is the radius of the confinement region, which for these purpo…
Before studying the pentaquark system we examine the spectral weights of the two lowest scattering states in the two-pion system in the isospin I=2 channel on lattices of size $16^3\times 32$, $24^3 \times 32$ and $32^3 \times 64$ at $β=6.0$ in the quenched theory. We find that the spectral weights scale with the volume for large time separations. Therefore very accurate data are necessary in order that the spectral weights determined on different volumes yield a ratio that is precise enough to distinguish a scattering state from a single particle state. The pentaquark system is studied on the…
We derive the finite-volume correction to the binding energy of an N-particle quantum bound state in a cubic periodic volume. Our results are applicable to bound states with arbitrary composition and total angular momentum, and in any number of spatial dimensions. The only assumptions are that the interactions have finite range. The finite-volume correction is a sum of contributions from all possible breakup channels. In the case where the separation is into two bound clusters, our result gives the leading volume dependence up to exponentially small corrections. If the separation is into three…
We derive general results for the mass shift of bound states with angular momentum l >= 1 in a finite periodic volume. Our results have direct applications to lattice simulations of hadronic molecules as well as atomic nuclei. While the binding of S-wave bound states increases at finite volume, we show that the binding of P-wave bound states decreases. The mass shift for D-wave bound states as well as higher partial waves depends on the representation of the cubic rotation group. Nevertheless, the multiplet-averaged mass shift for any angular momentum l can be expressed in a simple form, and t…
We investigate bottomonia splittings by solving a Schrodinger-Pauli-type equation with parametrisations of QCD potentials around those that have been determined previously in lattice simulations. This is done both, in the continuum and on finite lattices with resolutions ranging from a=0.2 fm down to a=0.025 fm and extent of up to 12 fm or 144^3 lattice points. We find a strong dependence of some splittings, in particular the 2S-1S and 1P-1S splittings, on both the quark mass and the short range form of the static potential in the neighbourhood of the bottom quark mass, while splittings such a…
For resonances decaying in a finite volume, the simple identification of state and eigenvalue is lost. The extraction of the scattering amplitude is a major challenge as we demonstrate by extrapolating the physical S_{11} amplitude of pion-nucleon scattering to the finite volume and unphysical quark masses, using a unitarized chiral framework including all next-to-leading order contact terms. We show that the pole movement of the resonances N(1535)1/2^- and N(1650)1/2^- with varying quark masses is non-trivial. In addition, there are several strongly coupled S-wave thresholds that induce a sim…
We study the 2+1 dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on a finite two-torus with twisted boundary conditions. Our goal is to study the interplay between the rank of the group N, the length of the torus L and the Z_N magnetic flux. After presenting the classical and quantum formalism, we analyze the spectrum of the theory using perturbation theory to one-loop and using Monte Carlo techniques on the lattice. In perturbation theory, results to all orders depend on the combination x=λNL and an angle defined in terms of the magnetic flux (λ is 't Hooft coupling). Thus, fixing the angle, the system e…
The quark mass dependence of hadrons is an important input for lattice calculations. We investigate the light quark mass dependence of the binding energy of the X(3872) in a finite box to next-to-leading order in an effective field theory for the X(3872) with perturbative pions (XEFT). At this order, the quark mass dependence is determined by a quark mass-dependent contact interaction in addition to the one-pion exchange. While there is only a moderate sensitivity to the light quark masses in the region up to twice their physical value, the finite volume effects are significant already at box …
The hyperon vector form factors at zero momentum transfer, $f_1(0)$, play an important role in a precise determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{us}$. Recent studies based on lattice chromodynamics (LQCD) simulations and covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory yield contradicting results. In this work, we study chiral extrapolation of and finite-volume corrections to the latest $n_f=2+1$ LQCD simulations. Our results show that finite-volume corrections are relatively small and can be safely ignored at the present LQCD setup of $m_πL=4.6$ but chiral extrapolation n…
In this paper we present our results concerning the dependence of Wilson loop expectation values on the size of the lattice and the rank of the SU(N) gauge group. This allows to test the claims about volume independence in the large N limit, and the crucial dependence on boundary conditions. Our highly precise results provide strong support for the validity of the twisted reduction mechanism and the TEK model, provided the fluxes are chosen within the appropriate domain.
The dependence of the Landau gauge two point gluon and ghost correlation functions on the lattice spacing and on the physical volume are investigated for pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions using lattice simulations. We present data from very large lattices up to $128^4$ and for two lattice spacings $0.10$ fm and $0.06$ fm corresponding to volumes of $\sim$ (13 fm)$^4$ and $\sim$ (8 fm)$^4$, respectively. Our results show that, for sufficiently large physical volumes, both propagators have a mild dependence on the lattice volume. On the other hand, the gluon and ghost propagators c…
We present the results of an analysis of a 2+1 dimensional pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory formulated on a 2-dimensional spatial torus with non-trivial magnetic flux. We focus on investigating the dependence of the electric-flux spectrum, extracted from Polyakov loop correlators, with the spatial size l, the number of colours N, and the magnetic flux m. The size of the torus acts a parameter that allows to control the onset of non-perturbative effects. In the small volume regime, where perturbation theory holds, we derive the one-loop self-energy correction to the single-gluon spectrum, for arbit…
Lattice simulations of light nuclei necessarily take place in finite volumes, thus affecting their infrared properties. These effects can be addressed in a model-independent manner using Effective Field Theories. We study the model case of three identical bosons (mass m) with resonant two-body interactions in a cubic box with periodic boundary conditions, which can also be generalized to the three-nucleon system in a straightforward manner. Our results allow for the removal of finite volume effects from lattice results as well as the determination of infinite volume scattering parameters from …
The interplay between between gauge-field winding numbers, theta-vacua, and the Dirac operator spectrum in finite-volume gauge theories is reconsidered. To assess the weight of each topological sector, we compare the mass-dependent chiral condensate in gauge field sectors of fixed topological index with the answer obtained by summing over the topological charge. Also the microscopic Dirac operator spectrum in the full finite-volume Yang-Mills theory is obtained in this way, by summing over all topological sectors with the appropriate weight.
Volume modifications to the binding of two-body systems in large cubic volumes of extent L depend upon the total momentum and exponentially upon the ratio of L to the size of the boosted system. Recent work by Bour et al determined the momentum dependence of the leading volume modifications to nonrelativistic systems with periodic boundary conditions imposed on the single-particle wavefunctions, enabling them to numerically determine the scattering of such bound states using a low-energy effective field theory and Luscher's finite-volume method. The calculation of bound nuclear systems directl…
Three bosons with large scattering length show universal properties that do not depend on the details of the interaction at short distances. In the three-boson system, these properties include a geometric spectrum of shallow three-body states called "Efimov states" and log-periodic dependence of scattering observables on the scattering length. We investigate the modification of the Efimov states in a finite cubic box and calculate the dependence of their energies on the box size using effective field theory. We explicitly verify the renormalization of the effective field theory in the finite v…
Understanding the volume dependence of the triton binding energy is an important step towards lattice simulations of light nuclei. We calculate the triton binding energy in a finite cubic box with periodic boundary conditions to leading order in the pionless effective field theory. Higher order corrections are estimated and the proper renormalization of our results is verified explicitly. We present results for the physical triton as well as for the pion-mass dependence of the triton spectrum near the ``critical'' pion mass, Mpi_c ~ 197 MeV, where chiral effective field theory suggests that th…
We take a first step towards the solution of QCD in 1+1 dimensions at nonzero density. We regularize the theory in the UV by using a lattice and in the IR by putting the theory in a box of spatial size L. After fixing to axial gauge we use the coherent states approach to obtain the large-N classical Hamiltonian H that describes color neutral quark-antiquark pairs interacting with spatial Polyakov loops in the background of baryons. Minimizing H we get a regularized form of the `t Hooft equation that depends on the expectation values of the Polyakov loops. Analyzing the L-dependence of this equ…
The Cucchieri-Mendes bounds for the gluon propagator are discussed for the four dimensional pure gauge SU(3) theory. Assuming a pure power law dependence on the inverse of the lattice volume, the lattice data gives a vanishing zero momentum gluon propagator in the infinite volume limit. Our investigation shows that this result is robust against variations of the lattice volumes and corrections to the power law. Moreover, it is consistent with the Gribov-Zwanziger horizon condition and contradicts the SU(2) analysis, which assumed the same type of dependence on the inverse of the volume. Our an…
The volume dependence of the ground-state energy of n identical bosons with short-range interactions in a periodic spatial volume with sides of length L is calculated at order L^{-7} in the large volume expansion. This result will enable a refined determination of the pi^+ pi^+ pi^+ interaction from lattice QCD calculations.
