In this paper we describe the notion of an annular end of a Riemann surface being of finite type with respect to some harmonic function and prove some theoretical results relating the conformal structure of such an annular end to the level sets of the harmonic function. We then apply these results to understand and characterize properly immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of finite total curvature, in terms of their intersections with two nonparallel planes.
In this article, we study the modified defect relations of the Gauss map of complete minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ and $ \mathbb R^4$ on annular ends. We obtain results which are similar to the ones obtained by Fujimoto~[J. Differential Geometry \textbf{29} (1989), 245-262] for (the whole) complete minimal surfaces. We thus give some improvements of the previous results for the Gauss maps of complete minimal surfaces restricted on annular ends.
In this article, we study the ramification of the Gauss map of complete minimal surfaces in R^m on annular ends. This work is a continuation of previous work of Dethloff-Ha. We thus give an improvement of the results on annular ends of complete minimal surfaces of Jin-Ru.
In this article, we study the ramification of the Gauss map of complete minimal surfaces in R^3 and R^4 on annular ends. We obtain results which are similar to the ones obtained by Fujimoto and Ru for (the whole) complete minimal surfaces, thus we show that the restriction of the Gauss map to an annular end of such a complete minimal surface cannot have more branching (and in particular not avoid more values) than on the whole complete minimal surface. We thus give an improvement of the results on annular ends of complete minimal surfaces of Kao.
We study graphs with nonnegative Bakry-Émery curvature or Ollivier curvature outside a finite subset. For such a graph, via introducing the discrete Gromov-Hausdorff convergence we prove that the space of bounded harmonic functions is finite dimensional, and as a corollary the number of non-parabolic ends is finite.
A salami is a connected, locally finite, weighted graph with non-negative Ollivier Ricci curvature and at least two ends of infinite volume. We show that every salami has exactly two ends and no vertices with positive curvature. We moreover show that every salami is recurrent and admits harmonic functions with constant gradient. The proofs are based on extremal Lipschitz extensions, a variational principle and the study of harmonic functions. Assuming a lower bound on the edge weight, we prove that salamis are quasi-isometric to the line, that the space of all harmonic functions has finite dim…
Embedded minimal surfaces of finite total curvature in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are reasonably well understood: From far away, they look like intersecting catenoids and planes, suitably desingularized. We consider the larger class of harmonic embeddings in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ of compact Riemann surfaces with finitely many punctures where the harmonic coordinate functions are given as real parts of meromorphic functions. This paper is motivated by two outstanding features of such surfaces: They can have highly complicated ends, and they still have total Gauss curvature being a multiple of $2π$. This poses t…
The Weierstrass representation for minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ provides a flexible method for constructing minimal surfaces of arbitrary genus. The topological limitations of minimal surfaces interfere with this providing a more general geometric modeling tool. Minimal surfaces lie in the larger class of harmonic surfaces, which in general don't have the same topological limitations of minimal surfaces and can have complicated embedded ends. In this paper we demonstrate the flexibility of using the Weierstrass representation for harmonic surfaces to combine embedded harmonic ends togeth…
We prove the existence of harmonic spinor fields in axisymmetric Riemannian 3-manifolds having nonnegative scalar curvature and asymptotic to the usual constant time hypersurface of Melvin's magnetic universe. Such a spinor can be used in the proof of the uniqueness of the magnetized Schwarzschild solution.
In this paper, we study the behavior of a sequence of harmonic maps from surfaces with uniformly bounded energy on the generalized neck domain. The generalized neck domain is a union of ghost bubbles and annular neck domains, which connects non-trivial bubbles. An upper bound of the energy density is proved and we use it to study the limit of the nullity and index of the sequence.
We construct the first examples of complete, properly embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ with finite total curvature and positive genus. These are constructed by gluing copies of horizontal catenoids or other nondegenerate summands. We also establish that every horizontal catenoid is nondegenerate. Finally, using the same techniques, we are able to produce properly embedded minimal surfaces with infinitely many ends. Each annular end has finite total curvature and is asymptotic to a vertical totally geodesic plane.
We consider harmonic immersions in $\R^{\N}$ of compact Riemann surfaces with finitely many punctures where the harmonic coordinate functions are given as real parts of meromorphic functions. We prove that such surfaces have finite total Gauss curvature. The contribution of each end is a multiple of $2π$, determined by the maximal pole order of the meromorphic functions. This generalizes the well known Gackstatter-Jorge-Meeks formula for minimal surfaces. The situation is complicated as the ends are generally not conformally equivalent to punctured disks, nor does the surface have limit tangen…
We give a topological interpretation of the space of $L^2$-harmonic forms on Manifold with flat ends. It is an answer to an old question of J. Dodziuk. We also give a Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula for the $L^2$-Euler characteristic of some of these Manifolds. These results are applications of general theorems on complete Riemannian Manifold whose Gauss-Bonnet operator is non-parabolic at infinity.
We provide the details for Gromov's proof of Stallings' theorem on groups with infinitely many ends using harmonic functions. The main technical result of the paper is a compactness theorem for a certain family of harmonic functions.
We show that a noncompact manifold with bounded sectional curvature, whose ends are sufficiently Gromov-Hausdorff close to rays, has a finite dimensional space of square-integrable harmonic forms. In the special case of a finite-volume manifold with pinched negative sectional curvature, we show that the essential spectrum of the p-form Laplacian is the union of the essential spectra of a collection of ordinary differential operators associated to the ends. We give examples of such manifolds with curvature pinched arbitrarily close to -1 and with an infinite number of gaps in the spectrum of th…
In this talk, I will discuss the use of harmonic functions to study the geometry and topology of complete manifolds. In my previous joint work with Luen-fai Tam, we discovered that the number of infinities of a complete manifold can be estimated by the dimension of a certain space of harmonic functions. Applying this to a complete manifold whose Ricci curvature is almost non-negative, we showed that the manifold must have finitely many ends. In my recent joint works with Jiaping Wang, we successfully applied this general method to two other classes of complete manifolds. The first class are ma…
In this thesis we prove analytic results about a cohomotopical Seiberg-Witten theory for a Riemannian, Spin$^c$(4), 4-manifold with periodic ends, $(X, g, τ)$ . Our results show that, under certain technical assumptions on $(X, g, τ)$, this new version is coherent and leads to Seiberg-Witten type invariants for this new class of 4-manifolds. In the first part, using Taubes criteria for end-periodic operators, we show that for a Riemannian 4-manifold with periodic ends, $(X, g)$, verifying certain topological conditions, the Laplacian, $Δ_+ : L^2_2({Λ^2}_+) \rightarrow L^2({Λ^2}_+)$, is a Fredh…
The limit of energies of a sequence of harmonic maps as their annular domains approach the boundary of moduli space depends upon the boundary point approached. The infinite energy case is associated with limits of images containing ruled surfaces. The finite energy case yields a limit of images, under a suitable topology, with a union of discs and straight line segments. Generalization to higher numbers of boundary components shows that minimal surfaces union straight line segments can still be achieved, and that the configuration of straight line segments depends on the direction of approach …
We use meromorphic quadratic differentials with higher order poles to parametrize the Teichmüller space of crowned hyperbolic surfaces. Such a surface is obtained on uniformizing a compact Riemann surface with marked points on its boundary components, and has non-compact ends with boundary cusps. This extends Wolf's parametrization of the Teichmüller space of a closed surface using holomorphic quadratic differentials. Our proof involves showing the existence of a harmonic map from a punctured Riemann surface to a crowned hyperbolic surface, with prescribed principal parts of its Hopf different…
This paper develops new tools for understanding surfaces with more than one end (and usually, of infinite topology) which properly minimally embed into Euclidean three-space. On such a surface, the set of ends forms a compact Hausdorff space, naturally ordered by the relative heights of the ends in space. One of our main results is that the middle ends of the surface have quadratic area growth, and are thus not limit ends. This implies, for instance, that the surface can have at most two limit ends (at the top and bottom of the ordering), which is a strong topological restriction. There are al…
We prove that a constrained Willmore immersion of a 2-torus into the conformal 4-sphere is either of "finite type", that is, has a spectral curve of finite genus, or is of "holomorphic type" which means that it is super conformal or Euclidean minimal with planar ends. This implies that all constrained Willmore tori in the 4-sphere can be constructed rather explicitly by methods of complex algebraic geometry. The proof uses quaternionic holomorphic geometry in combination with integrable systems methods similar to those of Hitchin's approach to the study of harmonic tori in the 3-sphere.
Let $M$ be a complete non-compact manifold satisfying the volume doubling condition, with doubling index $N$ and reverse doubling index $n$, $n\le N$, both for large balls. Assume a Gaussian upper bound for the heat kernel, and an $L^2$-Poincaré inequality outside a compact set. If $2<n$, then we show that for $p\in (2,n)$, $(R_p)$: $L^p$-boundedness of the Riesz transform, $(G_p)$: $L^p$-boundedness of the gradient of the heat semigroup, and $(RH_p)$: reverse $L^p$-Hölder inequality for the gradient of harmonic functions, are equivalent to each other. Our characterization implies that for $p\…
We study the space of L^2 harmonic forms on complete manifolds with metrics of fibred boundary or fibred cusp type. These metrics generalize the geometric structures at infinity of several different well-known classes of metrics, including asymptotically locally Euclidean manifolds, the (known types of) gravitational instantons, and also Poincaré metrics on Q-rank 1 ends of locally symmetric spaces and on the complements of smooth divisors in Kähler manifolds. The answer in all cases is given in terms of intersection cohomology of a stratified compactification of the manifold. The L^2 signatur…
